Rev. Alan F. Travers Holy Child Church 4747 Amboy Road Staten Island, NY 10312

Dear Rev. Travers:

On behalf of the Sisters of the Franciscan Handmaids of Mary St. Edward Food Pantry we would like to thank you and your parishioners for the generous donation of food and continued support of the pantry. Your generosity and support is as constant as the morning sun, and we humbly appreciate it especially during the summer months when we need it the most.

Such an expression of kindness and generosity cannot simply be taken for granted or go unacknowledged.

Be assured that the Sisters will keep you and your parishioners in their prayers. Gratefully yours,

Sr. Rosemary , FHM

Sr. Rosemary Onwuemene, FHM

“AND ADORING BEND THE KNEE . . .

As St. Paul told the Romans - 14:11 , “For the Scriptures say, “As surely as I live,” says the LORD, “every knee will bend to me and every tongue will confess and give praise to God.”

We Catholics come together from our varied walks of life to worship God. There are prescribed ritual actions by which we are engaged as one people together before the Lord in his holy place: standing, kneeling, sitting, praying, singing. Thus we do in the celebration of the Sacrament of Unity.

Our relationship with the Lord is at once individual and corporate. There is a time for private personal prayer and devotion and a time for community prayer and worship.

Many though we are, we are one in the Spirit which we profess and celebrate and one in the Sacrament which we receive at Mass.

In the assembly we come together to participate in unison – not unlike the many high school home rooms of yesteryear that used to go to the auditorium for “Assembly” as the Student Body. (I was told of an out of state school where no more assemblies are ever scheduled because of the youngsters’ unchecked boisterous behavior.)

NOVEMBER 19, 2017

In every enterprise there must be a point where all come together in agreement. This convergence makes for community. Otherwise, we have a group of perpetually unrelated individuals with little in common.

While there always must be room to disagree on issues with respectful and hearty debate, we must meet at a point where we all co-operate. Without that vital point, community dissolves into anarchy.

At Mass we all profess The Faith and receive The Sacrament. As the Mass unfolds, we all find ourselves joining in the prayers and singing the songs, engaging in the same postures. (Someone gave me a charming report. They witnessed a service dog at Mass who rose whenever the congregation stood and laid back down when they sat.)

We refrain from statue touching and candle lighting, private devotions, personal conversations, social networking and premature departures while God’s people are engaged as one in Divine Worship, especially when receiving the Sacrament and singing God’s praises.

Unified participation is especially called for at Communion Time. After all, the definition of communion is: common participation in a mental or emotional experience. (“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart . . . with all your mind” - Mark 12:30)

As a people, we lovingly thank God for his love in the Eucharist: listening to him, responding to him, receiving him. This is the spiritual network.

Communion means togetherness, rapport, connection, accord, unity. And after all, or maybe before all, the Mass is the celebration of the Sacrament of UNITY. There are other times and places in our private lives when we may exercise our particular devotions or express our theological opinions - for “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

We all have our preferences but if we all assert them absolutely and simultaneously, we wind up with no essential meeting point. It is then that company, community, society are bound to evaporate.

United we sing and pray. “United we stand” and sit. United we kneel . . .

. . . WHILE WE OWN THE MYSTERY.”*
