  • PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

    33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"But the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried

his master's money." This servant was scared. He didn't want to take any risks and just

wanted to play everything safe. As he confesses to his master, "Out of fear I went off

and buried your talent in the ground." And the master was not pleased. The other

servants who invested the money he gave them were richly rewarded for their efforts

to produce more. But this servant was punished for letting his fear rule the day.

What factors are keeping us from making a return on God's investment in us? He has given us all life, and each

of us also has a special collection of "talents" to make use of. We have certain gifts, skills, experiences, resources,

and abilities that (though we may not often think about it) come from God. He calls us to make the most of

these things, not just to take them for granted or bury them in the ground, so to speak. Our gifts are meant not

just for our own enjoyment, but to help others, to spread truth and goodness and beauty to the world around us.

Sometimes, however, we fail to really capitalize on our potential. Laziness, distraction, or self-pity can get in the

way if we are unwilling to put in the hard work to improve our natural gifts, if we allow ourselves to zone out with

entertainment or frivolous pastimes instead of making good use of the time entrusted to us, or if we wallow in

negativity by focusing on what we don't have instead of embracing what we do.

Each moment is a gift from God. May we seize every opportunity to multiply the investment God has made

in us so that we may be worthy to hear God tell us, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

I believe that everyone, at some

point in life, thinks oneself to be

    totally self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency

    is almost hardwired into our

American DNA. We have seen that

    American independent streak in so

    many of our successful

    entrepreneurs of the past. And

    many of our “self-made” business

men and women seem to have

    accomplished everything all by

    themselves.

    However, upon closer inspection

we see that their success has been

    a collaboration with other people

and entities. We never succeed all

by ourselves. It takes others to be

truly successful. And those who are

    successful ultimately say they have

so many people to thank for their

    success.

We too must look at our gifts and

say thank you. As we gather around

the table at Thanksgiving, let us

thank God, who is the giver of

    all good gifts.

    LET US PRAY…

    Generous and merciful God,

we thank you for your abundant

    gifts to us.

    As we celebrate this Thanksgiving

feast, we ask you to send your Spirit,

to open our hearts to you and our

neighbor, that we may share the

gifts you have given us as your

    Son Jesus taught us to.

    Thank you for the many

    blessings of our lives:

    our family and friends,

our home and the food we eat,

    our health and employment.

    We ask your blessing on

    all gathered here today,

    and all your people

    throughout the world,

    through Christ

    your Son.

    Amen.

    SERIOUS PRAYER

In our journey with discernment one of the biggest obstacles is our own personal sin. This is because sin hinders us from hearing the voice of God. So what is it that usually is a factor in the fight with sin? Well just last week a friend of mine emailed me and said to open a Google document that he wanted to share with me. As soon as I read the email I thought, 'That's strange, he usually writes a little bit more in an email and that doesn't sound like him.' So I concluded that the email was spam and that I wasn't going to open it. In a matter of a minute I was so curious to know what was in that document that I clicked it even though my mind was telling me that it was clearly spam. Later that evening around midnight my credit card information was stolen and people were making purchases. That stolen information was all the result of me choosing to ignore my rational thoughts and follow my curiosity and that's the fight with sin. Our mind tells us it's wrong but then we are so curious to see what's on the other side that we overrule our mind and fall into sin with consequences. Let us not allow curiosity to kill us but let us choose life. Life with Christ. In order to do this we must take on serious prayer, because serious prayer and serious sin cannot exist together. One will drive out the other. So let us take on a life of serious prayer to drive out any level of serious sin and truly hear the voice of God calling us to the life He has created for us!
