A Note from Johnny…
We are celebrating the 125th anniversary of First Baptist Church of Dothan. This is a time to celebrate, but also a time to recommit our mission to the Lord.
Where did it all start? Let me share with you a brief history of this great body of God who is called First Baptist Church of Dothan.
First Baptist Church of Dothan was organized in November of 1887, with Reverend J.C. Skipper serving as pastor of nine charter members. The church constructed their first house of worship in 1888 at 205 South St. Andrews Street – a one-room structure erected at a cost of $420. By the end of his ministry at First Baptist in 1890, the membership had grown to 52, and had joined the Columbia Baptist Association.
First Baptist was incorporated on April 4, 1893, and built a new facility that same year at the southeast corner of Main and Oates Streets. The pastor, W.M. Burr, worked enthusiastically alongside the hired and volunteer laborers. He proved to be a master woodworker, fashioning the pulpit and communion table used by the fellowship for the next 40 years. The cornerstone of the new building read “The love of Christ constraineth us,” and the Hebrew phrase “Jehovah-Jireh,” translated “The Lord will provide,” was carved above the baptistry…most significant and visionary words for the young congregation.
As God gave numerical and spiritual growth, organizations such as the Baptist Young People’s Union (B.Y.P.U.) and the Women’s Mission Society were organized. Around 1910, First Baptist established the first of many mission churches in the Dothan area, and in 1917 ordained its first foreign missionary, Mr. Jesse Rodgers, who served in China. During the 1922–1923 church year, the Sunday School outgrew its space and serious discussion emerged about relocation. In 1925, the Cooperative Program was introduced, which remains in place today as the key financial avenue whereby all Southern Baptist Convention causes are supported. Progress also began in earnest for construction of our current facility. In 1927, the church conducted its first Vacation Bible School and on May 6, 1928, held its first service in the new facility.
The 50’s and 60’s saw dramatic growth in all areas of church life. Under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Maddox, the value of church property doubled, facilities were enlarged, additional staff members were added, more missions were started, and the television ministry began.
From those years to the present, First Baptist has endured some trying times, but the grace of our Lord has shown greatly in our midst. The mission from the start has been to reach a world with the message of Christ starting from downtown Dothan and moving into all parts of the world.
Relationships, missions, and the Word of God have been the standard that has held us together and they, by the grace of our Lord, will lead us into the next generation.
Thank you church, for carrying the torch which has been passed down from the generations before.
Bro. Johnny
