Sing-A-Long!

Thursday, Nov 21

Three year olds at 9:15 a.m. and four year olds at 12:30 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. Please come see St. Bernadette’s little saints sing about being thankful!

When we are confirmed, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There is no radical change in us that makes us seem suddenly different. Over a period of time we come to see that there is a little bit of the Spirit in us. We catch ourselves using the gifts, and often end up wondering where a bit of wisdom came from, or why we were so patient, or we feel an intensity in our prayers. Perhaps we felt drawn to deepen our spiritual life or found courage in witnessing to our faith. That's when we know we have received the Holy Spirit. We take on His image. Yes, we grow in age, grace and wisdom, but we also grow in our awareness and understanding of the working of God in our life. We become more godlike, realizing we're getting more and more like God. Our thoughts, words and actions carry that quality and others see it in us. You might call it holiness. Be confident! There's a little bit of Him in all of us.

Around the Archdiocese

Thanksgiving Day is a secular holiday with strong religious roots. This day implies that there is a God, that God is provident, that we recognize what God has done, that we can address God about our blessings, and that the best thing we can say is “Thanks.”

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops includes this day on the liturgical calendar for the country. Parishes may celebrate whatever weekday Mass would otherwise fall on that day. If anyone knows how to give thanks to God, the church should know how to do it best. The very word eucharist means “thanksgiving.” There is no more fitting way to celebrate this feast than to join in prayer at the table of the Lord. -Paul Turner Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc. 160 E. Catholics often are drawn to saints due to their profession, hobbies, or ethnic background. One’s patron saint serves as an example of how to live a life of holiness and service to God. We hold up the saints of the Church in high regard. However, we can sometimes make the mistake of seeing them as the subject of stories in print and not real living people. We can assume that their level of devotion and

holiness is unattainable. In fact, we are all called to be saints. Our world needs more living saints living out their stewardship in a radical manner. Stories are valuable, but when others get to see disciples of Jesus Christ answering their call in person, consider the impact. There is a reason why lay witnessing is so important in cultivating a stewardship culture in a parish community. The people we can see and hear are alive

right in front of us. Some will say that to truly be humble means to act anonymously,

but we are not speaking here of actions that call out, “Look at me!” We are talking about acting in a way that people see not you and me, but Jesus instead. We are to be models and examples to one another. We are to build up one another and make the Body of Christ strong. Don’t sit back wishing you had the strength to be a saint. You have already been given the gifts needed to be the saint you are called to be. Maybe people will read about you later, but the Church needs you now! — Tracy Earl Welliver

Question: What do Catholics believe about the end of the world? Answer:

We hear the phrase “the end of the world” casually today. Often in film or media, it means the end of civil society or the threat of human annihilation by natural disasters. For the Christian, our perspective is distinctly Christ-centered. Numerous times through the Gospel, Jesus notes that he will come again, even after he has ascended into heaven. The Church typically refers to this as the Second Coming of Jesus or the Latin “Parousia,” meaning “presence” or “arrival.” We believe that Christ will come again, and at his Second Coming, temporal time will end. Human history will end, at least as we know it. However, it doesn’t mean that creation will be destroyed. The book of Revelation speaks of a renewal, indeed a “new heaven and a new earth” (Rev 21:1). Christ will come again in glory. Our souls will be reunited with our bodies. While our lives were judged individually at our deaths, which we call the particular judgment, something new will happen here. Theologians call it the general judgment or the last judgment, in which our deeds and the effects — for good or ill — will be known to all. For the early Christians, this second coming was hoped for! They knew it was the completion of God’s work of redemption for the human race. We, too, should pray with them, “Come Lord Jesus!”

Why Do We Do That?
