CATHOLICS COME HOME
The End Is Near!
A few years ago, December 21, 2012, the
Mayan calendar was interpreted to predict
“the end of time”. Hollywood capitalized
on this literally by making a movie about
it. Many TV shows and documentaries
also examined what it could mean for us.
The Church each year, as we approach the
Feast of Christ the King (next Sunday),
uses scriptures to remind us that one day
there will be an end of this world. This is
not to scare us, but remind us of the BIG
PICTURE - salvation history
Many theologians, philosophers and
educated people down through the
centuries have predicted the “end times”
based on calendars, the end of the first
and second millenniums, and on
“weapons of mass destruction” at their
relevant times in history, e.g. the long
bow, the crossbow, gun powder,
airplanes, nuclear weapons, missiles,
lasers, etc.
While we may be able to read accurately
the geological record of past cataclysmic
events which have annihilated most of life
on earth, we cannot accurately predict
when the next major catastrophe will
strike the earth, whether natural or
manmade. The bottom line truth of the
end of time for each of us comes when
we, as individuals, die. Time ceases for
us.
If we would spend as much time, energy,
knowledge, research and resources on
dealing with the problems of humanity in
the present, then we would not worry so
much about the inevitable “end time”. If
we developed our relationship with God
and focused our efforts on more
meaningful relationships with family,
friends, fellow workers and humanity,
then there would be no worries about the
inevitable “end time” except for preparing
for it in the present time. We would also
learn to be good stewards of our resources
and our ecosystem which sustains life on
earth.
The past is only a memory or a written
record with no hope to change it. It is a
fact. The future, if we could predict it,
would we change? How many know the
dangers of smoking, drugs or alcohol
abuse and still continue with those habits?
How many are overweight and know that
better eating habits as well as regular
exercise would increase energy, and lead
to good health, yet do not take simple
steps which would bring about the goal
we seek. The same is true for spiritual
health.
God sends us messages each day for the
present to guide us. Our parents gave us
the language of faith and love which most
reject in teenage years as they seek to
discover life on their own terms. The
challenge for each of us is to use the
knowledge we have and take action to
lead better lives for oneself and to make
the world a better place for our having
passed this way. Then we need not worry.
The God who gave us life will bring us to
the fullness of life if by our actions,
sacrifice, forgiveness and love we open
our hearts to his will.
Fr. Ken Fleck

Immaculate Conception Novena
November 29 - December 8
St. George Church
Let’s join with Mary and say
YES to the Lord!
“I say yes, My Lord” - Advent, 2015 Immaculate Conception Novena
“Be it done to me according to your word.” Thus, a young Jewish girl over 2,000 years ago accepted the role she was
assigned in salvation history. We too are called to “say yes, My Lord” every day of our lives, and thus fulfill the role God
has set out for us.
This Advent, as we all ponder our daily call to say “yes” to all God asks of us, you are invited to participate in a Marian
Novena of Masses each evening, starting on November 29 and ending at the Vigil Mass of the feast of the Immaculate
Conception on December 7.
Weekend Masses will coincide with regularly scheduled times (4 pm Saturday and 6 pm Sunday). Weekday Masses will
begin at 6:30 pm each evening. Each night’s homily will explore some facet of Our Blessed Mother and how she can serve
as a role model and helper for us not only in Advent, but every day of our lives. Benediction will follow the Mass each
evening. If you cannot join us every night, a handout of the Novena prayers will be available for you to pray at home on the
evenings you will miss. The final Mass will be followed by fellowship in O’Connell Hall. Finger-food donations will be
appreciated!
We hope all of St. George parish will say “Yes, My Lord” and join us on this Advent journey to “Prepare the Way of the
Lord.”

Catholic Women Sharing Faith
A ministry of prayer, communication and education!
Our season of thankfulness is upon us. In the midst of our gratefulness, we still think of those who are suffering illness and loss, and those who could use some extra loving attention, and perhaps a special hug. A great way to share God's love is by giving the gift of a blessed prayer shawl. Shawls are free - please call Pina Quatrini at (708) 606-0898, or Maureen Cetera at (708) 253-5592. Thanks to the many wonderful donors who make it possible for us to share "hugs from God!" We appreciate you!

Ushers Ministry Have you ever wondered what is involved with being an Usher? Have you thought about joining the ministry, but did not know how or if it was a ministry? The Usher Ministry is expanding and we would like to have you join us.
If you are in seventh or eighth grade, high school, a young adult, or an adult of any age, we ask that you consider helping your parish by volunteering to be an Usher.
We are looking for people who can commit to lending a helping hand each week. The primary duties are:
• Greeting and welcoming parishioners as they enter and leave church.
• Help with seating.
• Asking volunteers to take up the gifts.
• Taking up the collections.
• Attendance counting.
• Handing out bulletins at the end of Mass.
In this day and time, not everyone attends the same Mass time each week. We understand and can make adjustments for floating or stand by Ushers with your help.
Contact Naomi O’Malley the new coordinator of the Usher Ministry at (708) 460-5580, email [email protected] or drop a note at the rectory to inquiry with questions or to sign up.
The holidays are approaching and we would like to have our
Ministry ready to welcome all!

New Book!
The Boys in the Boat:
Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics By Daniel James Brown
The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany.
Books are available at the Rectory for $9. Purchase your book before they are gone and
join the discussion on Friday, January 22, 2016!
"For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story
about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable,
intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the
world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers and
farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the
East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for
Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who
rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on
the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an
unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary
young man’s personal quest." For information call Angie Brady at (708) 532-3644.

Hand-Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land
Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land.
There are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are
completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood.
The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in
Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their
living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land
of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites.
Issam from “Star of Bethlehem Group” came to the United States with a
mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand
crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them
working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from
sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy
Land. Star of Bethlehem has been approved by Archdiocese of Chicago,
many bishops and from diocese of Jerusalem.
Please take a look at these beautiful articles November 28 and 29.
Life-Size Nativity Scene at Daley Center Plaza
Dear Friends of the Holy Family:
As the holy season of Christmas approaches, Christians
anticipate with great joy the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. During
this time, we often imagine Mary, the Blessed Mother, carrying the
infant Jesus in her womb, the first real tabernacle of Christ. As the
season of Christmas approaches, let us all follow Mary’s simple,
yet profound example of saying “yes” to God as she responded to
the angel Gabriel, “May it be done to me according to your
word” (Luke 1:38).
Please join St. George musicians Saturday, November 28, in
Chicago’s Daley Center Plaza at Dearborn and Washington
Streets, for the rededication ceremony of the life-size nativity
scene. You are welcome to watch as the God Squad constructs the
scene – this begins at 9:00 am. The God Squad in action is a sight
to behold! The rededication, with music and a blessing from
Fr. Gerald O’Reilly of Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in
Mundelein, will begin approximately at 10:30 am.
The nativity scene will remain on display until December 26
so make a visit with children and grandchildren part of your
Christmas tradition. If you would like to help the Nativity Scene
Committee cover the considerable expenses of providing this
display to our city, you can leave a donation at the rectory for Ryan
Hagen, Nativity Scene Committee. Let us be generous in support of
this display to help remind fellow citizens that it is the birth of
Christ that is the reason for our joy!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)
continues to advance our mission of eradicating poverty in
economically-distressed communities. Our Holy Father’s most
recent address to Congress on September 24 of this year
instructs us that, “Our efforts must aim at restoring hope,
righting wrongs, maintaining commitments and thus promoting
the well-being of individuals and of peoples. We must move
forward together, as one in a renewed spirit of fraternity and
solidarity, cooperating generously for the common good.”
Pope Francis’ words resonate deeply with the mission of
CCHD. By funding communities through CCHD, we actively
work together towards eliminating systemic oppression.
Organizations supported by CCHD work to build long-term
solutions that will allow future generations to have a dignified
quality of life. For example, Mujures Unidas (Women United)
of St. Eulalia has created a women-owned catering worker
cooperative that has worked for the past three years to provide
healthy food options in the Maywood area.
Mujures Unidas radically changes the way low-income women
can participate in the economy - both as workers and business
owners. They are able to use their talents in cooking and event
planning, while maintaining oversight and direction of their
cooperative. CCHD supports Mujeres Unidas because it
exemplifies shared economic development that builds strong
leaders and strong families.
The CCHD annual collection is the primary source of funding
for CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs in
Cook and Lake Counties. Fifty percent of the collection’s
proceeds stays here in our Archdiocese to fight poverty in our
communities, and the other 50 percent goes to funding
programs nationwide.
The appeal weekend for the CCHD annual collection is
November 14-15 and the collection is November 21-22. Help
us defend human dignity and show Christ’s charity to those in
need. Please encourage the faithful to contribute to the Catholic
Campaign for the Human Development. To learn more about
CCHD in the Archdiocese of Chicago, parish resources, and the
groups if funds, please visit www.ChicagoPeaceAndJustice.org/
CCHD.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich
Archbishop of Chicago

Spend Some Time With a Friend
There was a man who would visit his
friend every Sunday. They would spend a little
time together and share a little food and drink.
But, the man never came to see his friend
during the week. His friend started thinking,
“He only comes because he feels he has to.
Otherwise I never see him.” Then one day the
man stopped in to see his friend in the middle of
the week, just to spend a little time together.
The man felt good seeing his friend and started coming every week as well as their Sunday get
together. The friend told the man, “You come
to see me in the middle of the week, not
because you have to, but just that you want to.
These meetings are very special to me.”
It’s like that with us and Jesus in the
Blessed Sacrament. We come on Sundays for
Mass because we have an obligation to do so
and we partake of Our Lord’s Body and Blood,
which Jesus said is real food and drink. Why
not come to Holy Family Chapel in the middle of the week, and visit with your friend, Jesus,
not because you have to, but because you want
to. Our Lord will appreciate you coming and
give you all kinds of graces to help you along
life’s journey. Even better, call Bill Beckman at
(708) 429-2762 and arrange to spend an hour every week with your friend, Our Lord in the
Blessed Sacrament. Then every week your
friendship with Our Lord will grow and grow.
You know, it’s good to have a Friend in high
places.

Altar Server Appreciation Mass
On Saturday, November 7, ten St. George altar servers and their families attended the
Altar Server Appreciation Mass celebrated by Bishop Andrew Wypych and concelebrated
by six priests, including Fr. Tomy. One of our altar servers was asked to altar serve this Mass, what a great honor. Our other altar servers that attended, processed into the church
waving bright ribbons. In his homily Bishop Wypych spoke of the church being like a
puzzle and that there are many pieces that make up the “big picture”. All of us are pieces
of that puzzle and if some are missing the picture is incomplete. He engaged the children
asking them questions about what a mission/commission are. He explained to the children
that he is sending them forth on a wonderful journey to serve their parishes and our Lord.
The Bishop blessed cross necklaces and gave one to each of the altar servers. After the
Mass, the Bishop met with the children and their families for pictures and joined everyone
for pizza.
