NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are delighted to have you on the beautiful campus of The University of Alabama in Huntsville and thank you for coming to our musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The cast was assembled in late August and has been working hard to prepare a wonderful evening of musical theatre for you. This is our tenth sea-son to offer public performances in the Chan Auditorium. It has taken a labor of love from countless students, alumni, and community members to establish and grow this unique college theatre program, not to mention the support UAH Theatre has en-joyed from the administration, faculty, and staff here at the university.

It continues to amaze me how much talent there is in Huntsville and what a pleasure it has been to work with this group of artists. This wonderful music by Frank Loess-er has been stuck in our heads for months now, and we will likely carry these great songs away with us. These memorable characters created by Abe Burrows have come to life, one rehearsal at a time, and now seem like part of the family. We hope you will enjoy the show and leave tonight humming and smiling and anxious to join us at UAH for future performances.

David HarwellDirector

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying opened at the 46th Street Theatre on Broadway in October 1961. The show ran for 1,417 performances and won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

This musical follows the meteoric rise of young J. Pierrepont Finch from window washer to Chairman of the Board. The idea for the musical was sparked by Shepherd Mead’s “tongue-in-cheek” manual of the same name. Mead’s book has no plot, so Abe Burrows’ script is actually based on an unproduced play by Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert. The play was sent to producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin, who then enlisted Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows to turn the play into a musical comedy.

How to Succeed has enjoyed two successful Broadway revivals: the 1995 revival with Matthew Broderick as Finch and Megan Mullally as Rosemary, and the 2012 revival with Daniel Radcliffe as Finch and John Larroquette as J.B. Biggley.

In addition, he has taken private voice instruction from Granville Oldham since the spring and is part of the Calhoun Community College Chorale. He would also like to thank his family for all of their support, especially his grandfather Dr. Alton Bynum for being an incredible inspiration in music.

UAH is proud to announce the Theatre Minor, offering interdisciplinary courses and opportunities geared toward students’ interests and talents. It is an exciting complement to any major. Classes vary from theatre history and production elements to acting and design. Any career that requires presentation or performance can benet from theatre training. Acting builds condence and understanding. Theatre technology adds artistry to the engineering process and gives students an edge in the marketplace. From a business and management standpoint, theatre offers the unique challenge of working in a fast-paced situation that demands exibility, creativity, and focus. Marketing students can learn how to promote public events with print material, advertising, and press.

The minor requires twenty-four credit hours; twenty-one of those are available in direct theatre study in the Department of Communication Arts, while the rest are offered in the Departments of Music, Art, English, Philosophy, and Foreign Languages.

Talk to your advisor or call 256-824-6909 and enroll now!

She would like to thank David Harwell, Shannon Graham, and Birdie Jones for corrupting her and bringing her into the UAH Theatre family.
