Maine 2014/2015 Transmission Outages

• Changes to plan typically result in increased construction cost– Costs include overtime, additional contractor resources, expedited

material, additional engineering and outage coordination resources, environmental mitigation, schedule and remobilization costs, permitting, etc.

• Outages that have the potential for significant impact to generators in 2014/2015 will be discussed– Long (greater than one week) duration outages – Significant potential generation constraints

CMP Outage Applications

• Central Maine Power had 1,400 outage applications in 2013

• There have been 517 transmission (>34.5kV) and 185 sub-transmission (34.5kV) outage applications in 2014

• The MPRP Project has submitted 975 outage applications for the project through March 19, 2014

• The outages range in duration from a few hours to eleven months in length

• The MPRP team anticipates that there will be an additional 300 – 400 outages needed to finish the program

• Most difficult outage to coordinate in New England– Historically Requires:

• Many contingencies result in controlled islanding of the Maritimes• Must run specific generators• Do not exceed limits on specific generators• Minimum New Brunswick-New England Interface transfers• Maximum Orrington South Interface transfers• Results in almost all generators inside the Bangor Hydro + Keene Road

Export Interface cannot operate• Interface Limits

determine if it is more reliable, increases transfer capabilities, reduces impacts on generators ability to operate• Eliminates 1st contingency controlled islanding of the Maritimes• Reduces must run of specific generators• Reduces do not exceed limits on specific generators• Generators inside the Bangor Hydro + Keene Road Export Interface able to

compete for limited transfer capability
