Transcript of November 1, 2019 פ''שת ןושח 'ג | חנ תשרפ - Edl · as much fun for the girls as it was...
As the destructive waters of the mabul inundated the world, the ravages of the
greatest flood in the history of mankind began to take its toll. Noach heeded the
command to construct a teivah, ark, and compassionately accepted humans and
animals alike. The doors of Noach’s teivah were open to all… until Vayisgor Hashem
baado, And Hashem shut it on his behalf (7,16).
Why didn’t Noach close the doors? Chizkuni writes that because Noach was unfamiliar
with some of the species, he was uncertain if all the animals had entered the teivah
and therefore specifically left the doors open. A wind, powered by Divine Providence,
miraculously closed the doors of the teivah only after all the animals had taken shelter.
One cannot help but derive a compelling lesson from Noach’s insistence upon an open
door policy, supporting his philosophy that his teivah represented a haven for all.
Further underscoring the lesson, the doors of the teivah were miraculously closed by
the Ribono Shel Olam only after everyone – humans and animals alike – were
sheltered and safeguarded within the secure confines of the teivah.
The world is unfortunately exceedingly polarized. We live in an era in which society
tends to focus on that which divides us as opposed to that which unites us. Separation
by virtue of diversity and ideology have expanded to include the fabrication of modern
day fences which further increase and exacerbate the polarization. From politics to
climate change, from technology usage to vaccinations, from peripheral externals to
the various expressions of yiddishkeit, there seem to be so many self-imposed and self
-created divisive factors. How relevant is this to our communities? Quite relevant;
because too often the beauty of yiddishkeit and the authenticity of Torah become
clouded by ambiguities and misconceptions.
As Bnei Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, our goals should be more elevated. We should
strive to maintain higher levels of tolerance and acceptance. One never knows when
he might find himself on the opposite side of the acceptance arena. At the same time,
however, society is fraught with challenge and sometimes, unfortunately, the
umbrella cannot be as wide as we would like it to be.
Our Torah determines who and what may be included. To be sure, in a perfectly
utopian world, the doors of our teivos should and would be wide open to all. Sadly, it
is not a utopian world. But, at the very least, we should recognize the goal and value
the aspiration. And in the meantime, we should know what we are missing.
Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Our first full week of school following our Succos break was very productive. Sixth grade
talmidim have begun their Eretz Chemdah program via live video hookup from Eretz Yisrael. In
this interactive program, the boys are able to learn the halachos which apply to Eretz Yisrael in a
creative and engaging manner. In preparation for the beginning of learning Chumash, Mrs.
Burnstein’s first grade boys saw the inside of a Sefer Torah when Rabbi Newman showed it to them this week. Each boy had
a chance to “see” Parshas Bereishis inside the Sefer Torah. The boys are very excited to be receiving their very own
chumashim very soon.
Many boys returned completed Succos charts after the break indicating all of the learning and chesed they did over
Succos. We are very proud of their efforts and prizes will be distributed in the next few weeks.
Nachas News
Dovid Gardin and Zevy Gresak (Grade 1), without being asked, rushed to help another boy pick up his fallen school supplies.
Daniel Goldzweig (Grade 1) cheered for his fellow classmate that won the prize in class. Yossi Baum and Yaakov Boim (Grade
2), on a daily basis, enjoy holding open the doors for the other members of their class. Ezra Weisz (Grade 5) reviewed 830
lines of Gemara over the Succos vacation.
Top attendance for Minyan (Shachris): Grade 5: Tuvia Bennett, Yossi Dessler, Menachem Evenchik, Ahron Fertig, Daniel
Fischer, Yeruchem Frank, Moshe Friedner, Dovid Goldman, Shlomo Goldstein, Yehoshua Grasier, Yosef Gross, Aharon Yosef
Holstein, Boruch Yehuda Joseph, Azi Keller, Dovi Klarfeld, Noach Koyfman, Meir Mann, Meir Miller, Shmarya Modes, Naftali
Roffman, Shlomo Rosner, Shlomo Schwager, Benny Solowitch, Noam Stern, and Ezra Weisz.
Top daveners (Shacharis): Grade 6: Tuvia Borochovitz, Yosef Chaim Cohen, Mordechai Cohn, Zevi Farkas, Yisroel Freedman,

The Junior High was thrilled to welcome Rabbi Shlomo Deutsch, son-in-law of
Rabbi and Mrs. Goldbaum, who was visiting from Eretz Yisrael. He enthralled
our talmidim with a spirited kumzitz last Friday. It was a perfect post yom tov
activity, enabling us to hold on to simchas yom tov that much longer!
The school’s recent Simchas
Beis Hashoeva in conjunction with
the Yeshiva of Cleveland, was a
beautiful and ruach filled
event for men and boys of
all ages. Special thanks to
Rabbis Simcha, Shmuel
Yaakov and Yisroel Nosson Mann for sharing their incredible talent!

In honor of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, Yavne junior high enjoyed a G.O.
assembly. The girls demonstrated great spirit as they sang and danced
to the G.O. song. Our 8th grade G.O. heads broke out the theme by
playing a game of broken telephone. The theme of this month is “Stay
Plugged In” – חיל ילכו מחיל אל (Klal Yisrael goes from strength to
strength, from mitzvah to mitzvah). Elisheva Chafetz explained that
after a month of mitzvos and connection to Hashem, we are still
Hashem’s special nation and very dear and close to Him. We also tied
in that Chodesh Cheshvan is the yahrzeit of Rochel Imeinu, who
personified being an אשת חיל, a woman of strength and valor. The
entire Junior High divided into groups and everyone had a chance to
play broken telephone. The girls received a candy treat as well. Lastly,
the girls were informed that they are finally going on the opening G.O.
trip next week, iyH. They were of course, so excited and can hardly wait to delight in the activities at the
“Main Event”.
8th graders are looking sharp and full of school spirit
in their sweatshirts.
We are excited to be busy learning again after a wonderful Succos
vacation. So many girls returned their Succos charts, which showed
us what we already know: Hebrew Academy girls are busy doing
mitzvos even when on vacation! We got so many Nachas Notes,
including: “Mindy Reichman helped serve, making many trips back
and forth to the Succah,
and always with a smile!”
“Esther Miriam Cohen was
an amazing helper and she took her davening so seriously!” “Chaya Pessi
Kahn said Hallel beautifully every day!” “Fayga Yuspeh set the table, took
care of the baby, decorated the Succah and more!” “Sori Gottesman always
davened even before she was asked!” “Batsheva Boim did the mitzvah of
hachnasas orchim especially well!” “Shayna Schnair was so kind to her
cousins, she always made sure they were comfortable!” “We are so proud of
how Henna Weinschneider davened every day and was a huge help to Mommy and Bubby!”
Over 20 girls have already received prizes for finishing a chelek in our SPARK program. Some girls have even finished 2
chalakim!

What better way to celebrate hard summer work than
some cool ice cream? The students who completed
summer packets were treated to an ice cream party with
all the toppings- and when we say all, we mean all and
more! Smiles were guaranteed as students chose as many
toppings as we could fit in the bowl of ice cream. It was
as much fun for the girls as it was for the professional ice
cream scoopers! A special thanks to Shifra Feldman for
coming out of line to give some more help at the tables.
It’s not so easy to wait longer for the yummy treat, yet
she did so with a smile!
Thank you to Mrs. Koval, Mrs. Zelczer, Mrs. Moskowitz,
Mrs. Pollack, Mrs. Kulefsky, Mrs. Stelzer, Mrs.
Greenberger, and everyone else joining in for some fun
with us!
State Testing in 3rd Grade
If you see a third grader- congratulate them! Our third
graders took their first Ohio State Tests this week. The
students concentrated, worked hard, and used this Fall
testing session to “test the test”. The students were able
to test out what it feels like to
take a high stakes test. They
were able to test out what it
feels like to respond to a
writing prompt using a
keyboard. They were able to
test out what it feels like to
maintain attention and
concentration for 90 minutes! We will look forward to the
score reports in December to help each student set a goal
for progress in the spring.
We are so proud of our incredible students for working
hard and ensuring they do their best. Our teachers have
worked diligently and deliberately to familiarize the
students with computerized testing, test taking skills, and
brushing them up on reading comprehension strategies.
We look forward to spending this 3rd grade year
preparing the students for content knowledge, writing
skills, and testing strategies to progress significantly from
the fall scores. Our goal is growth!
Engaged students, the Elementary way!
It is such a pleasure to walk into classrooms throughout
the division. An
example of what
is seen on a daily
basis within just
one grade level:
Mrs. Starkey’s
2nd grade girls
were reviewing
parts of speech as
they work through
narrative writing
and their introduction to paragraph writing. To get more
interactive, Mrs. Starkey has students come up to use a
real pointer, not virtual, to note nouns in a sentence.
Using technology as a display board but real candidates
and real tools to interact with the learning keeps it
engaging, fun, and educational. The girls are excited to be
‘the real pointer’ and the class anxiously awaits the
ending answers- this beats a worksheet any day! Then,
stepping into another 2nd grade parallel class, Mrs.
McAfee is involved in a heated ‘round the world’ game,
but with a common core standard’s twist! Rather than
racing with basic math facts, the students have to
decompose numbers of 10 based on the card displayed.
Students cheering classmates on, tie rounds, and wheels
turning, it was a fully engaged class of learning and fun!
Our teachers and girls create a learning environment fit
for all, even the observers!

B”H the children all returned to school so eager to share their Succos stories
and adventures. It certainly sounds like everyone had a great Succos.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, the children got treats in
the lunch room, while singing and dancing “A gutten chodesh”. Morah Chumee
and Morah Yitty’s class had their Rosh Chodesh parade, going from class to class
singing “A gutten chodesh” and playing musical instruments. This month, for
Cheshvan, they were wearing colorful umbrella hats.
This week, the children learned about Noach, who was a tzadik, and how Hashem told him to
build a teivah. They learned about the mabul and of the promise that Hashem made while
showing a rainbow in the sky: that He would never bring a mabul again. Many of the classes
made teivos, easel painted rainbows, made rainbow cookies, Mashiv HaRuach umbrellas, talked
about all the different kinds of animals that we have in our world and of their habits, and
brought toy animals from home for Show-and- Tell.
In conjunction with Parshas Noach, Jungle Terry visited our preschool and brought along many
of his animal friends. The children all went to the auditorium and were enthralled by Jungle
Terry’s presentation. He got them all involved, and even let them get up close and touch some of his “animal friends”. Ask
your children what animals he brought. Hopefully, they will remember and be able to share this educational, exciting and
fun experience with you.
All the kinderlach came back to school excited to tell us all about their yom tov! We are
sure you shepped nachas from all our kinderlach over yom tov!
This week, Morah Sara and Morah Blumi’s class learned all about geshem and the
importance of it. The boys and girls got to experiment using water and seeds to see
what happens if too much or too little water is used to plant the seeds.
The class ended off this amazing lesson with a team building activity. Using a table cloth and water, the boys and girls needed
to work together and create “rain”. They all walked away recognizing how incredible is everything Hashem creates!
In General Studies, our kindergarteners have been acclimating beautifully to our FUNdation curriculum. The focus this week
was letter m. A lot of excitement and learning was happening in Morah Devorah and Morah Bina’s class.
The teachers have incorporated lots of hands-on learning centers that students learn and
explore. Each day there are 4 centers that are working simultaneously to reinforce the
necessary skills for phonemic awareness. This gives the children an opportunity to work
in small groups that can be adjusted towards individual needs. The centers include
activities in letter formation, games using letter or number concepts, and letter
recognition. There was a lot of practice to make center time as productive as possible
and transitions as seamless as possible. Making an “m” crown, masks and interacting
with the Fundation magnet board were just a few center highlights this week.

Physical box tops are being phased out of the program. Box Tops is going digital and
requires parents to get the new mobile app so our school can keep earning. To date,
our school has earned over $27,000! The app scans your store receipt, automatically finds participating products and
instantly adds Box Tops to your school's earnings online. No clipping required!
Use the attached collection form to get started. Students can submit the completed form in the main office for a prize!
