Nov/Dec 2017
Eating donuts on a string at the Dboosh Halloween PartyNovember and December have been extremely busy at Dboosh with fun in the park, another visit from our Pen Pals at South Coogee, our Halloween Party, Our Breast Cancer Fundraiser, our student presentation by the Dboosh Student Committee at the AGM and the screening of our I movies. There have been lots of community activities, amazing craft creations and we now have The Awesome Shop-a variation of the Awesome Hotel. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year Kathy and The Team.
Dboosh will be closed from Friday the 22nd of December until the children
return to school on Tuesday the 30th of January 2018. Our new kindy
students will be joining us from Wednesday the 31st of January.
Well, What an action packed year it has been at Dboosh!
I could tell you all about our amazing staff at Dboosh……The variety of different
backgrounds, cultures, ages and life experience they have and what richness
that brings to our program. I could tell you how Emily is the best assistant I have
ever had. I could also tell you that each staff member has one thing in
common….that they love and care for your children every day and that they
think of you and your children and their co-workers as a ONE BIG FAMILY.
I could tell you all about the fun things your children have been doing at Dboosh
this year…..Developing the perfect recipe for slime, creating cubby houses,
exploring the park, climbing trees, making movies, getting wet on hot days in
water fights, making new friends through Pen Pals, challenging each other in
tugger wars, pretending to toast marshmallows on make believe camp fires,
playing Bullrush, celebrating special occasions like BBQ’s and Halloween,
enjoying the Milo hour on Friday afternoons, the oreo biscuit challenge or raising
money to help women with breast cancer and Jeans for Genes.
But what I really want to talk about is……
What we are doing at Dboosh
• Instilling good values
• Building a community
• Providing a unique environment where children are free to create,
experiment and explore the world
• Helping your children develop the skills to get on with other people and
make great friends
How we are doing itWe are simply play facilitators providing a variety of resources, experiences and environments for your children. We plant ideas with the children and watch them grow. We help the children make connections. I wanted to tell you that every time we went to play in the park and climb the tree next to the playground the only equipment the children wanted to take was skipping ropes. I asked Layla why? She said because we need to abseil down the tree trunks and swing between the branches in the jungle.I also wanted to share the story of the Awesome hotel which then became the Dboosh hospital and later The Dboosh supermarket. I bought a piece of furniture to set up a sunscreen station for the children in Summer and left it on the Dboosh verandah. The next thing I noticed is that the children had repositioned the furniture explained, “It’s called the Awesome Hotel. You can do karate, gymnastics, watch TV and order any food you want. There’s free room service. The blue cushion is the swimming pool and you can get a massage if you want too.”
Why are we doing it?Well its pretty simple…..You’ve probably noticed at Dboosh your children get dirty, make a mess, get bumps and bruises, are challenged, take risks and sometimes have their feelings hurt …….but your children also have fun, laugh a lot, explore and create and make long lasting friendships at Dboosh. We nurture the children so they can develop the skills they will need for adult life-to care about others, share, resolve conflicts, respect themselves and others, show kindness to others, tidy up after themselves and look after the environment. We want your children to be happy, kind, curious, confident individuals with a sense of fun and freedom. We hope your children make long lasting friendships and collect lots of fond childhood memories at Dboosh. This is the heart and soul of Dboosh
We have learned what is important to the children are the processes of what they are doing not the end product.
We listen to what the kids want and support them to make those dreams a realityIn the morning the children get together and decide what they want to do. The children type up the program on Emily’s computer complete with pictures and special effects. Each afternoon a staff member is running an activity each week they are skilled or passionate about. Sometimes we run drama or sports programs, but the foundation to our program is to be flexible and take into account every day in real time the weather, the staff, what your children have been doing during the day at school and how they are feeling. It is now a tradition for the children to come to the window near my desk at lunchtime and put in an order for the afternoons activities. It’s a bit like a McDonald’s drive through. Each and every day the staff reflect on what is happening and what they are doing so we can make improvements and add new and exciting things to the program. In 2018 we would love to involve parents more at Dboosh. We will be running a survey to find out
What you like about Dboosh? What you don’t like about Dboosh? How we can best share with you all the fun things your children do every day at Dboosh?Whether you have a skill or passion or you would like to share with the childrenSo join us for the survey so you can have your say about Dboosh too!

DBOOSH community
Here’s what Victor had to say…My favourite part was
the piñata. You had to
whack it with the stick
and then it cracked and
the lollies came out.
On October the 31st, we held an action-packed day celebrating
the spooky holiday, Halloween! All the staff and kids put on
costumes, dressing as witches, devils, ghosts, ghouls, and
alike. We had fairy bread, chips, popcorn, EARTHWORMS,
and a cute Halloween fruit platter.
We played Bobbing For
Apples, and Donuts on
a String, and smashed a
piñata full of lollies!
In the weeks leading up
to the day, the kids
helped make Halloween
decorations and
posters.
Here’s what Mae had to say…Cancer is when your body grows cells where they’re not supposed to grow and your body tries to get rid of them. We can buy some medicine and some places in hospital for people in other countries because we have free health care in Australia. We could also buy food to help people with breast cancer.
We also included
the Breast Cancer
Awareness Day as
part of Halloween.
The kids brought in
$2 that would
contribute towards
The Breast Cancer
Foundation.
The children are learning to show empathy and care for others.
Here’s what Eva B had to say about the Haalloween worms…The worms tasted like jelly.
They tasted really good but
they looked really disgusting!
At Dboosh, we are focused on creating opportunities where
children can build resilience and feel they belong. Through
community games, the children work together and play with
other friends and kids they would not usually play with.
The children
are learning
about
teamwork
and
collaboration

Farewell to AJ and Ty
We are all going to miss you!
I’ve been coaching water polo and rugby at various schools in the eastern suburbs for a while. I’ve just completed a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Cultural Studies at Sydney Uni. Next year I will be a studying a Masters of Teaching in Business and Geography for high school. My family background is Cuban and so I am currently in Columbia and Cuba discovering my family heritage. In Costa Rica, I am doing animal rescue work. My favourite activities with the children are tip, cricket, and basketball.

The children at Dboosh are extremely creative. By
providing all the materials the children need, we
support them to explore their own creative
projects. They develop confidence, curiosity,
cooperation, imagination, and persistence. The
focus is on the process of creating and
experimentation rather than the finished product.
What’s the Buzz?
I started at Dboosh in Kindy. I like making art and playing with My Little Pony. The only thing I don’t like about
Dboosh is that they don’t have hot dogs!
