We toured Pearl Harbor and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Some of the pictures are included in this Fly Paper. I would HIGHLY recommend those tours if you ever go to Hawaii. One last thing.... be thinking about where you’d like to have fly-ins for 2015, or if you’d like to host one. I’ll be putting that together again this year, and will try my best to accommodate everyone. So far... no one has spoken up about any... so please don’t be hesitant. 2015 DuES FOR EAA 377

Chapter 377 collects dues on an annual basis, Janu-ary-December. Therefore if you want to join for 2015, please submit your dues to our Treasurer, Jana Jen-kinson. The November/December issue should include an envelope addressed with Jana’s address for your convenience. This is the only issue that will include an envelope.Dues is currently $15/year. It has not increased since 1998; we have been able to maintain this low rate be-cause so many members opt NOT to receive a printed issue of FLY PAPER via snail mail. Instead, they read it monthly on-line, and opt to print it themselves if they want a printed copy. Please submit your payment to

FROM DAVID WATT—It was a real treat to participate in this event. I had just as much fun as the kids did. I fielded not only questions about flying and airplanes, the inquisitive tikes wanted to know all about the pilot that was flying them around. I kind of felt like a Rock Star. At the start, I thought I wouldn’t be able to do the rides after first landing at LBL. The 172 was leaking fuel on the nose wheel. Jennifer Mannel got Bill Lyddon to come take a look with me. We determined it wasn’t the strainer. I called Crotts in Dodge City and talked to my instructor there. I suggested it may be a stuck carburetor valve or float. I said I will start the engine for a minute and shut it off. Should fix either of those situations. It did. The day was saved! I get to fly. Behind any event like this, a lot of work is done in preparation and operation of it. Jennifer was all over the place keeping it going. I had to hunt her down to get my next group of kids at one point. So hats off to everyone who had a hand in putting this together. I had an easy and fun role. Fly around and talk about flying. My thanks are to Crotts Aircraft Services for making N733FR available for me to rent for the day. This is the 172 I learned to fly and passed my checkride in. I am looking forward to the next time we can all get together and do this again.

FROM PAUL FIEBICH— The September issue of Powered Sport Flying magazine carried my article describing some of the activities at the KidVenture area of AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Although KidVenture is open only during the annual week-long EAA convention, the museum and its kid-friendly area are open continually. Both are great places to take children and grandchildren. This link will take you to the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin: http://www.eaa.org/en/eaa-museum This link will take you to my magazine article on my website: http://www.airbikeace.org/ Click on the magazine icon in the upper L/H corner of the home page. For those wishing to stay overnight, the best deal in town during AirVenture week is the YMCA: air conditioned camping indoors, plus all the amenities the “Y” has to offer.

PLEASE NOTE THIS ISSUE OF FLY PAPER COMBINES NOVEMBER & DECEMBER, DUE TO THE HOLIDAYS. A postcard reminder will be mailed a week before the Christmas Party at the SFEC on December 13 at 11am. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

BILL ANTON reports that there was a much small than usual crowd at the October fly-in at Lyddons in Liberal. The ramp was well represented with airplanes, and the food was delicious! Thanks Lyddons for your hospitality!STAN REISS was on hand to invite people to his private strip in November. Bill flew over to check it out after the meeting, and could see the 1.5 million bushel pile of corn as soon as he was off LBL!We hope you will plan to attend Stan’s flyin this Saturday, November 8. Bring a friend!

GCK TOWER would like to say “Happy Veteran’s Day” to all of those that served our nation in the armed forces. The tower has always been filled with veterans that have represented all branches of the military. Currently, in the tower we have Mike who served in the Navy and Air National Guard and was stationed at Lemoore NAS, CA; ADAK NAS, AK; Fallon NAS, NV; Will Rogers ANGB, OK; and Volk Field ANGB, WI. Then there is Rhys (Reece), who also served in the Navy at Oceana NAS, VA. Next is Carnell who served in Afghanistan for the Army and currently is an active member of the Army Reserves. Our newest controller is Zach, that served in the Air Force, performing ATC duties at Altus AFB, OK; Mildenhall, England RAF; Eglin AFB, FL; Iraq and Qatar. Since this issue will be combined with December, the guys in the tower would also like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and the happiest of holidays!

PAUL NIELSEN, Marketing Manager for Grand Island Convention & Visitors Bureau has offered to welcome EAA 377 to Grand Island if we want to come up for a visit. I had SO much fun visiting with FRED SCHRITT this summer, and was waiting to publish these photos until I went back and got a photo of Fred! His artistry and attention to detail is fascinating. Paul sent me this link to a short video of Fred, so please take a look.

Fred Schritt’s cars: http://visitgrandisland.com/enjoy/characters/fredsflyingcircus.html

If you are interested in joining us for a trip to GRI (Grand Island, NE) please let me know so that we can keep you informed as to plans. It most likely will happen on a weekday rather last minute, based on weather and availability of planes. GRI is about 200nm from GCK. There will be seats available in a few airplanes.

FROM MARSHALL WATSON— www.chevycarraffle.com This car came from my shed and has quite a history. My brother in law, to me, to my son, to my friend Bill Green who spent $25,000.00 restoring it and customizing it, to his widow, back to me, to Global Outreach Development International who is using it as a fund raiser and ultimately some of the proceeds back to the widow to pay off the note on their house they morgaged to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This raffle is over soon and tickets are only $10.00 each with some quantity discounts.

FROM MARY SHORTRIDGE—Thumbs up to Grand Island, NE! Trego/Dugan FBO loaned dad and I this Toyota Tundra truck so I could get dad home to Aurora, NE. His airport was closed for upgrades, so we landed at Grand Island, NE. About 25 miles each way, and they acted like it was no big deal to loan me a vehicle to drive that far. It sure helped me out, and saved me a lot of time. My other option was to land at Lincoln, which would have been a 65 minute drive each way. It was game day, so I had no interest in going anywhere NEAR that airport!

September 13 Todd flew the cub to Scott City so Jake Leatherman could see it restored. “Jake Leatherman of Scott City owned my Cub before Harold when it was still yellow. Jake was kind of hard on it and Harold bought the wreck from him. Jake had named the Cub Little Jake. Harold kept the name and so have I.”

Ron & Mary Shortridge stopped by Todd Crist’s hangar on Cook Field, Rose Hill, KS (near Wichita) It was so much fun to take a close-up look at all the details that make the plane’s restoration extra special. The Rolls Royce engine is eye-catching, and it was great fun to hear it was not only rare, but had belonged to 377’s Bob Townsend.

November/December 2014—page 6

September 22 was the start of the All Kansas Air Tour 2014. Thirty-three planes gathered at Wellington, Kansas Airport for introductions, opening ceremonies, and speeches by sponsors. The entire event is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Our first stop was Hutchinson, Kansas where we were treated to lunch at the airport restaurant, then received a tour of the Cosmosphere. About mid-afternoon most planes departed for the next stop in the three day tour. That would be Dodge City, Kansas. I flew only the first half of this leg and returned to my own hangar. I will re-join the group on the last flight leg Wednesday.

This link will take you to a couple of photos and a brief description of the event as reported by the Hutchinson Newspaper.

http://www.hutchnews.com/news/local_state_news/fly-kansas-air-tour/collection_1b550677-df1c-5ae5-97d4-df49fa65235a.html

I departed the Selby Aerodrome at 8:00 AM, note the long shadows. I was a cool 60 degree flight to the starting point in Wellington, KS, about 20 miles from here. Shortly after starting the engine and letting it warm up, I did jumping jacks to generate some heat in my body.

Planes varied in configuration, I was the only single-seat, others were the “heavy iron” up to six seats. A variety of Stearman biplane trainers were evident as a Mooney, an Aztec, and several other fast planes.

Don’t those blue and yellow Stearman planes look cool! There were a couple of Cessna 140’s, a Decathalon, Navion, Cessna Bird Dog, Champ and even one 1940’s Piper Cub flown by two women from Olatha, KS. And for the record, I actually flew faster than the Cub! I climbed to 4000 feet and caught a tailwind which was greater than that at lower altitudes. I clipped along at 80 mph, while they only did 65---whooooo---eeee!

The tandem seat biplanes carried a pilot and navigator, one team was a husband and wife I had seen on previous air tours. Note that my little plane seems a mite out of place among the big ones. But the size of one’s plane is in reverse proportion to the size of the fun they have. Gotta keep telling myself that!

A rare sight, water! We are back in our drought, no rain for the previous four weeks. In addition to the fun of anticipation and planning, we get to meet other pilots seen on previous air tours as well as meet new people. The lady at our table is a writer for AOPA, an aviation magazine. This was lunch at the airport restaurant

The Hutchinson Airport (HUT) is one of the few remaining in Kansas that has a control tower. That requires special communication equipment such as a radio and transponder to enter their airspace. I do not have such equipment. Instead a cell phone call prior to departing lets them know of my arrival time. I then orbit over a designated area and wait for the tower to give me a green light from their signal gun (a-la-1930’s). The green

light is my signal to land. A similar process is used when I take off. The FAA work with us little guys! All for now, man, ain’t retirement fun! Thanks to Vi for tolerating my aviation activity.

FROM ALAN JUDY—This 10 year old boy got quite a TREAT for Halloween today after he got out of school. I took Dayton flying for his very first airplane ride today and he didn't know anything about it till he arrived at the airport and saw my plane. He was grinning from ear to ear and he didn't want to come back down to earth and land! He took quite a few pictures to show all of his buddies while he goes trick or treating this evening. 10-31-14

FROM BRIAN FITZGERALD—I have just uploaded to my YouTube Channel the latest installment of “That They Might Fly Again Part 2”. It is my interview with Bill Koelling with his 1938 Cessna Airmaster. (Bill Koelling is an EAA 377 member!) Bill Koelling’s aeroplane is a beauty and truly exhibits the flowing lines of the Classic Art Deco look. You won’t find a friendlier guy on the Vintage Aircraft scene than Bill. I like him a lot. I think you will find him interesting and informative as we look at his “baby”. In addition to having done such a great job restoring his Airmaster, Bill Koelling should also have the title of Official Historian for Cessna Aircraft Company. He showed me a number of very interesting historical documents and photos about Cessna. I scanned quite a few that you can view in the “Extras” section.

Check Out Bill and his Airmaster here:http://youtu.be/7g1vvWtKrNs

The video collage featuring a minute sampling of Bill’s huge collection of Cessna Artifacts can be seen here:http://youtu.be/29iXtWlyfxw ALSO, you really need to see Bill and his good buddy Crop Duster Tony Martinez play around with Tony’s rare 3 Cylinder Radial LM-3 Lanape Papoose Engine. They had sent me some video they shot while running it up one day so I put it together with some still pix of one of their restoration projects:h t t p : / / f i t z v i d e o . c o m / p a g e s / We b M o v i e s /TonyMartinezLenapePapoose.html

FROM MARY SHORTRIDGE—First time flyer Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards) and MITCH COUNCE at LBL Air Fair. Nevaeh was quite nervous about a Young Eagles ride, and Mitch offered a “one on one” experience. It was Mitch’s first time to fly a Young Eagle. Now they are both hooked! Thanks, Mitch, for making it a BIG day for this girl, and allowing me the opportunity to calm her father down!

FROM NICOLE SCHARTZ—These pictures are of my son, Phoenix, who just turned 3, Skip Stewart, and his plane. Phoenix is over the moon about air planes and all kinds of aviation; he wants to learn it all and is well on his way! He told my mother on the way to the air show, Saturday, “Nonna, this is gonna’ blow my mind!” Indeed, it did. Little did Phoenix know he would get to meet Skip and take a seat in the cock pit. Phoenix is still raving about everything he saw and can’t wait for the next airshow! (More photos on-line)

Aircraft started out as an AT-19 in ’43 then in ’46 converted back to V77 Reliant. The flight manual is of the AT-19. The aircraft was in a museum for 10 years or more and the log books were lost. In ’98 the aircraft was purchased out of the Museum and underwent

restoration until December 2000. The rebuild/refurb list is extensive-beautiful aircraft with a lot of personality. There are not many of these left out here so get it before it’s gone.
