The current FBT rules also allow employees of not-for-profit, non FBT paying bodies to package up other benefits such as mortgage loan repayments. Herein lies a political sensitivity, because half of salary packaging users are worthy toilers such as teachers, nurses or charity workers. These do not necessarily involve vehicles.

Another option is to cap the commissions generated on novated leasing insurance and finance products.

Lest we forget, resurrected PM Kevin Rudd proposed to change the rules that in effect limited the car FBT concession to actual business usage. But he didn’t win the election and with the Coalition supportive of the status quo, the idea lapsed.
