As educators and parents, it is our duty to create awareness in our young children of these important facts and possible solutions. It is our responsibility to make children think of the consequences of complacency and „non-action‟ regarding energy, water, climate effects and other environmental changes taking place because after all, it will be our children who will either enjoy or suffer one day because of our inaction today.

Seven Golden Rules of Child Discipline

Give Real Choices

Offer the children a choice of positive options. For example, when a child is having trouble sharing, you might offer, "Would you like to share these blocks with Aisha or play with Ahmed over here?" Another example is when getting the bedtime routine started is a problem, try offering a choice of orders ("Should we take a bath first or brush your teeth?"). Notice that the children do not have to option to watch TV or do something other than part of the bedtime routine. The key is that the children feel a sense of control by having a real choice.

One Issue At A Time

Choose only one or two issues to emphasize at a time, typically the particular negative behaviors that are the most frustrating to you or are the most difficult to manage at home and school. Be sure to talk with the child about the appropriate behavior and to spend as much energy praising him or her for doing the right thing as you spend correcting inappropriate behavior in those areas.

B ecause so many parents

have been asking us for advice about

Discipline lately, I thought I'd share some

basic principles with our entire NovaQuest community.

Act as a Role Model

Remember that your child patterns his or her behavior after yours. Be sure to act and speak as you want your child to act and speak. Also take advantage of their interest by verbally emphasizing the behavior you want them to copy (for example, did you see the way I handled this situation…...; that's important to do/say because …....).

Set Real Expectations

Keep your expectations in line with the child's capabilities. As children work on mastering new tasks, they will certainly work slowly, make mistakes, and possibly spill or break something. Reward the children for effort and progress rather than expecting success.

Page 2

Parents’ Section “Have you become like the Incredible Hulk, ineffective until

provoked

Reward with Caution

Use rewards sparingly. Moderate use of small rewards can motivate a child, but excessive use conveys the message that one conforms to expectations in order to acquire something.

Be Consistence

Overall, consistency is the key. Research shows that children all over the world benefit the most from parents who consistently demonstrate their love by setting reasonable boundaries for children's behavior and consistently enforcing them with appropriate praise and consequences.

Remember the Bigger

Picture

Mistakes are the portals of discovery. Your child is a complex human being. Be patient and remember your long-term goal of developing responsible, self-reliant individuals.

Five Things Kids Enjoy more than T.V

STORY TELLING

Kids are always hungry for information. They just love to listen. Personal adventures, motivational events

or an imaginary princess story. An adult talking and sharing means a lot to them. So collect your thoughts, pick up a book or even a newspaper. Just tell them a story.

SOLVING PUZZLES

Kids like reward. Puzzles offer an exciting way to receive one. Give your child a puzzle he/she would like. It can be a crossword, Sudoku or even something trivial like finding your mobile phone. Any activity which gives the young mind a challenge followed by a reward at the end: a sense of accomplishment.

RUNNING

Kids enjoy running. The wind in their face, puffing, gasping for

breath. Give them a chance to run. Take them to a park. Let their limbs do the talking. Challenge them to a race. Its fun.

READING

Yes, kids do love to read. “Pictures that can speak”. Words to a growing mind are amazing. Suddenly the walls, boxes & ordinary paper start to talk. They can read instructions and understand them. You can encourage your child. Ask him/her to read the cereal box, butter label, milk carton. The telephone number from an advertisement in the newspaper. Start with story books they like. Follow up; ask about the story and characters, if they liked them and why? If you are interested in their reading, they will be too.

YOU

You are their world. You have much more to offer than a 21 inch glass screen. Talk to them, listen to them, engage them, ask them questions, answer theirs, take interest in them and they‟ll love you for it. Mohsin .R

L ast year ended productively with much improvement in the quality of education

at NIS. However, nothing can be achieved without team work. Perseverance and com-mitment gleamed flawlessly until the end of the session by all but Ms Saina Sohail, Ms Asma Bashir and Ms Jessica Nathenial went that extra mile by achieving 100% attend-ance. They, including Mr. Mohsin Raza (for

technical support), received „Commendation for Exemplary Performance‟ for their hard work, enthusiasm, helpfulness and an outstanding supportive attitude.

The new academic year started on a high note with the very first NIS O Level result. Haris Ansari (age 14) took his O Levels in June of this year and his results were Eng-lish Language (A), Chemistry (B) and Ur-du (B). Well done Ha-ris! (considering the fact he had only three months to prepare with our teachers).

We would like to con-gratulate Ms Nadia Rohail, Prep Class. on the birth of her daugh-ter. Her students are eagerly waiting for her return.

Continuing on with our Energy Saving Education, NIS students will be travelling on the “Energy Saving Education Truck” to various schools enlightening fellow learners about the program so as to create a thought provoking awareness of the crisis at hand. We had invited some visitors to our school to come to observe and judge our commitment to the noble cause; Linda Blount (Public Affairs Dept) and Muhammad Asif (Director of Library) US Consulate. Ms Uzma Khan (Manager Conserva-tion Program), WWF.

In October, we had fun at the Eid Carnival and a visit to Nan-kana is on the cards for a camp fire instead of Halloween. Much preparation for the Drama in December will be ongoing. The theme for the Drama Festival is „Environmental Issues‟.

Revision for 1st term assessments and examinations will com-mence from 1st November, 2009.

Our focus for year is on Character Building and English Lan-guage: not only in writing and reading but spoken as well. Our teaching methodology has been and will be lead by Ms Yasmeen Jahanzeb, who not only has a passion for teaching the finest but does not compromise on quality at any cost.

In my fourth year at NIS, I would like to wish a gratifying school year to parents, teachers and students.

A Parent’s Life in Famous Words

Administrator’s Message

L aying the foundation of NovaQuest International School eight years back

was a challenge but the passion for teaching and getting a franchise from an International Organization made it possible for me to compete with the best schools.

Personal involvement and coaching, where and when it was required, gave every student in this school a feeling of security. Even the youngest child could turn to me and ask for help. It touched me, and later with the assistance of our Directors and Principal, we expanded the school to offer „O‟ Levels.

Today, NIS provides all the required facilities and quality education due to past efforts. I personally want to thank the parents of the students in this school who have trusted me with their most precious asset—i.e. their child. This trust has made it easy for me to give their children the best.

I can foresee a bright future for the students of this school. Hopefully there will be more branches of NIS in Lahore as well as in other cities and countries.

We promised and today we stand by our commitment to make NovaQuest International School a world-class institution and a school that‟s producing educated and responsible citizen‟s.

T en-year-old Mirzeb comes home from school, eats a snack, and reluctantly starts his homework by 4

P.M. He pulls out his notebook and homework materials and tries to figure out what he is supposed to do. Within the first 15 minutes, Mirzeb is up and down at least half a dozen times searching for a

sharper pencil, getting a drink, checking the cricket match scores in the newspaper, looking for his favorite

CD, finding batteries for his CD player, and so on. His mother, Shazia tries to be encouraging: "Mirzeb, let

me help you get started. Now, what is it that you have to do? Show me where

you need to begin. I know you can do this." As Mirzeb continues to get distracted and stall, Mirzeb's mother becomes increasingly frustrated and

angry. Silently, she complains, "I am so sick and tired of this nonsense!

When is he ever going to learn? Why can't he just focus and do his work?

Why does it take him hours to do 45 minutes worth of homework?"

Exasperated, annoyed, and concerned, Mirzeb's mother begins to nag... and

direct... and yell... and threaten. Three hours later, the homework is finished, Shazia is exhausted and discouraged, and Mirzeb is either

agitated and unruly or sullen and withdrawn. Although Shazia knows

that something is very wrong with their homework routine/ she doesn't

know quite how to change it. She only knows that this vicious cycle will

certainly begin again tomorrow.

Establishing a Positive Emotional Climate and an Effective Homework Routine

In our experience, most parents struggle with their children and

themselves regarding homework issues. Parents and students often are not

well-informed about the homework process. The media, school systems, and teachers communicate conflicting attitudes and information about homework. Popular opinion and expert advice can be quite

different when discussions arise about the value and purpose of homework, the appropriate quality and

quantity of assignments, and the role of parents in helping children complete their schoolwork successfully.

It's no wonder everyone is somewhat bewildered about homework!

Write down assignments correctly.

Bring home necessary papers, books, and so on.

Understand instructions for assignment.

Decide on a time to do the assignment.

Gather needed materials, find space, and so on.

Prioritize assignments in order of importance or ease.

Get started.

Work independently or ask for help as needed.

Persist even when bored, frustrated, or distracted.

Finish the task.

Transport the completed homework to teacher and hand it in.

Does this scenario remind you of your household?

Do you ever find yourself wondering if there is a better way to manage your child's homework?

Do you feel worried, frus-trated, disappointed, discour-aged, or helpless?

Ms Sumaira Omer is the Information Technolo-gy & Arts teacher for Grade 1 to 5.

I believe the new generation is enthusiastic to learn about the latest technology. But they

should also know how to handle it. This de-mands a continuous learning environment.

I can truthfully say that school like NovaQuest is reaching the high standards of educational atmosphere by keeping student interest not only in studies but in physical and mental exer-cise. Through entertainment and games. Simp-ly: NovaQuest is trying to make each student a respected citizen to face life confidently.

Interaction of students with teachers and ad-ministration is like dealing with their dear ones. They can contact administration or teacher, either if it‟s their issue at home regarding stud-ies or in the class. Students are encouraged to speak their mind instead of staying quiet in any issue they face; they are even encouraged to question, often.

NovaQuest is not just filling a child‟s mind with knowledge from the syllabus but also empha-sizing a broad vision for the real life and for the world in which they are living.

What our Teachers Say...

Page 5 Volume 4, 2009

Ms Asma Bashir & Lisa Lee teach Nursery.

I have been teaching Pre-School for more than six years at NovaQuest. As a child‟s first

teacher, I introduce them to the world. Giving them my love and attention. For me, it‟s a pleas-ure to be with them and to teach them. Our young children are tomorrow‟s leaders.

My focus is on strong fundamental skills. Read-ing, writing and arithmetic. It‟s important for chil-dren to develop at an appropriate pace. Every child is different, but all require the same love and attention.

A s a Chinese teacher here, I receive the warmest greeting from the students. The

students are very curious about China and ea-ger to learn Chinese. They are very friendly and clever. I found that teaching at NovaQuest is much rewarding and challenging than teaching in China.

Its been one year since I started at NovaQuest. I found the school organized. NovaQuest strong-ly believes that every child is a genius in their own way and given the right tools and enough encouragement, we can make them reach the stars, or shine like one.

The homework scene can be quite challenging for parents and students alike under normal circumstances,

but it can be an Olympic feat for families with children who have difficulties

with Attention, Organization, and Learning. Although the process of writing down one's assignments, gathering the necessary materials and

information, and completing them may seem relatively uncomplicated to

most adults, children and adolescents may find the homework routine

immensely overwhelming. Just look at the multiple demands that

successful homework completion entails

REACHING HOMEWORK SUCCESS

Looking at the list, you can understand how any step in the homework

process can go wrong when a student has problems with attention,

memory, language, visual-motor coordination, organization, time management, and/or frustration tolerance. Imagine what the homework

process is like for students who find it difficult to pay attention, to plan

ahead, to ward-off distractions, and to persevere when tasks are

uninteresting and mundane. It can be incredibly challenging for a student

to search for his/her notebook in their school backpack (filled with

countless pieces of paper), copy the assignment from the blackboard while other students are buzzing with conversation, and write down all the details

slowly and carefully so that he/she can read their handwriting hours later. And that's just the first step!

While doing homework, it is not uncommon for children to become so frustrated that they can no longer

cope with either the assignment or your help. In response to feeling anxious, inadequate, or helpless,

children often regress and become overly dependent, angry, oppositional, or withdrawn. Even though it is

often disappointing, frustrating, and sometimes enraging to see your child flail, explode, or shut down when

faced with adversity, you as a parent, can be helpful only if you remain calm, provide encouragement and direction, and if all else fails, withdraw from the situation.

“I’m so sick and tired of this nonsense! When is he

ever going to learn?”

Not to Forget

I n a span of just 10 years, 1863-73, Alfred Nobel had made his greatest discoveries (dynamite),

built up an industrial empire, was wealthy and fa-mous, and was making weapons of war. When he died in 1896, he left his wealth for a foundation to reward peace efforts. We call it the Nobel Prize.

While working with a fa-mous chemist T.J Prlouxe, Alfred got inter-ested in nitroglycerine, a highly explosive liquid. Later on he went to in-vent dynamite using this chemical. He began to improve this chemical to make better weap-ons of war. He sold these to many nations and became wealthy.

When he died, he left more than 9 million dollars in his will to a foundation which was to distrib-ute prizes to worthy people from five different fields (physics, chemistry, literature, medicine, world peace). The organization gave its first set of prizes in 1901. It still does, every year.

Einstein said, “Alfred Nobel invented an explosive more powerful than any then known -- an exceeding-ly effective means of destruction. To atone for this 'accomplishment' and to relieve his conscience, he instituted his award for the promotion of peace."

Whether Alfred Nobel really felt that in the same way, neither we nor Einstein could really know for sure. Alfred Nobel in any case never gave outward expression to any such sentiments. If he hid them deep in his heart, we shall never get to know.

"Perhaps my factories will put an end to war soon-

er than your congresses: on the day that two army

corps can mutually annihilate each other in a se-

cond, all civilised nations will surely recoil with

horror and disband their troops." - after his death,

the first World War killed 37 million people

"Prizes to those who shall have conferred the

greatest benefit on mankind. It is my express wish

that in awarding the prizes no consideration be

given to the nationality of the candidates, but that

the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether

he be Scandinavian or not " - Alfred Nobel‟s will
