In the rural highlands of the Andes Mountains outside of Cuzco, Peru, a small social work initiative based around the production of Waldorf dolls has transformed a community. Founded in 2002, the project began in the village of Andahuaylillas as a way to give the residents an opportunity to work in supportive conditions for a fair wage; and to use their local knowl-edge, materials and skills to produce beautiful products and fund important changes in the community.

The process of crafting one Waldorf doll takes about five days from begin-ning to end. The Quechua women clean, card, and spin the wool, hand-dye all of the materials, and bring each component together into a beautiful, lovable doll.

All workers are paid according to the guidelines of Fair Trade, whether crafting and assembling the dolls by hand, spinning wool, or herding sheep. Some of the profits are used to improve the quality of life for the villagers by funding the installation of water systems, drainage, electricity, and plumbing in homes.

Along with materially improving living conditions, the Q’ewar Project as-sists in the development of personal growth and self-esteem for the villag-ers, especially the women. Each week, families gather to share their issues and successes. Through openly discussing topics such as health concerns, child-care, and their home and work situations, they are able to develop trust and demonstrate care for each other.

What began in one small room with just a few participants has now de-veloped into several workshops within a flourishing community, all trans-formed by simple dolls and a clear vision. The project has built a Waldorf school called Wawa Munakuy, which means “giving love to the children” in the Quechua language. The Q’ewar Project has received official recognition in Peru, opening it up for funding and training support.

We are proud to support this project by offering these beautiful, hand-made dolls. It is inspiring that these dolls have brought smiles to the faces of the people who make them, and will go on to bring joy and love to the children who care for them.

A NEW ADVENTUREDear Friends,

When our family moved to Vermont from New Jersey nine years ago, we knew that we wanted a different kind of life for ourselves and we believed that we would find it here. We were hoping for a life a bit more connected to nature, to the sources of our sustenance and to community. Our dreams were more than ful-filled as we came to love our adopted home state and its natural wonders, local foods and welcoming native Vermonters.

It has been interesting in the intervening years to observe how many other people across the country have sought to bring these same elements into their own lives. Some folks like us have moved from an urban to a rural locale. Some have learned to make do with less and spend more time in their communities. Still others have taken the time to become connected to farmers or started gardening.

These new choices are not, of course, confined merely to people’s food and community, but also find expres-sion in how they are choosing to raise their children. Surrounding children with fewer, better constructed products (toys and otherwise), babywearing, alternative schooling, greater involvement of both parents in childrearing, these are all ways that this cultural shift is showing itself.

Seeing this happen all around us, this embracing of old traditions merged with a new conception of the fam-ily has led us to a new adventure, our involvement in creating a new print magazine: Taproot.

With Amanda Blake Soule (of the soulemama.com blog) and Jason Miller (designer and photographer at Nova), we and our contributors have created an ad-free, quarterly journal filled with essays, crafts, recipes, photography, original illustrations and more. We’re closing in on our first year of publishing and it has been a terrific experience. We hope that you’ll visit Taproot’s website (taprootmag.com) and learn more, pick up some back issues (also available at novanatural.com) or subscribe.
