his  weekend  we  move  from  daylight  savings  time,  to  standard  time.    So  moving,  it  gives  us  the  illusion  that  we  are  somehow  in  control,  even  of  the  sun,  moon  and  stars.

In  actuality  we  have  simply  moved  the  mechanical  hands  or  digital  numbers  of  a  clock  forward  or  backward.    Nothing  in  the  heavens  or  on  earth  has  changed  one  iota.    Yet,  there  have  been  and  are  those  who  can  argue,  at  length,  which  is  better  or  worse  ever  since  Benjamin  Franklin  conceived  the  idea.    If  you  are  looking  for  someone  to  blame  we  can  turn  to  farmers  and  the  railroads.    Farmers  wanted  more  time  to  work  during  good  weather.    The  railroads  needed  common  time  so  trains  wouldn’t  run  into  each  other.    If  you  want  to  see  the  incredible  chaos  this  simple  movement  of  hands  or  numbers  have  caused,  just  Google  “daylight  savings  time.”

In  a  few  weeks,  on  the  first  Sunday  of  Advent,  words  in  the  mass  are  going  to  change.    As  with  daylight  savings  time  there  are  those  who  can  argue  endless  hours  over  what  is  good  or  bad  about  the  new  translation.    The  Gloria  and  the  Creed  have  changed  a  little;  we  will  say  “and  with  your  spirit”  instead  of  “and  also  with  you.”    There  will  be  cards  in  the  pews  to  help  us  through  the  transition.    Again,  like  daylight  savings  time  nothing  in  the  heavens  or  on  earth  have  changed  one  iota.    Our  faith  is  in  Jesus  present  among  us,  and  giving  Himself  to  us  in  Eucharist,  in  thanksgiving  for  all  that  we  are  and  what  we  can  accomplish  in  His  name.    It  is  the  Spirit  of  the  living  God  calling  us  together;  not  the  whims  of  translators  or  fickled  institutions.    The  fact  is  that  our  words  today  can’t  possibly  capture  or  contain  the  action  (gathering  in  Christ  to  be  the  Body  of  Christ  for  others)  we  do  each  Sunday;  and  the  new  words  aren’t  going  to  do  them  any  better  or  worse.

hat  does  matter  is  whether  or  not  we  are  praying  from  our  hearts  or  our  heads.    If  we  are  stuck  praying  in  our  heads,

the  words  become  everything  and  any  little  change  will  annoy  us  endlessly.    If  we  are  praying  from  our  hearts,  from  our  intention  to  be  the  Body  of  Christ  in  a  world  of  broken  promises  and  fragile  peace,  then  the  words  really  don’t  matter  all  that  much.    We  gather  to  pray  for  ourselves,  and  for  the  whole  world,  for  peace,  justice,  harmony  among  people,  nations  and  the  environment;  we  gather  to  unite  heaven  and  earth.    Any  words  we  use  fall  drastically  short  for  what  our  hearts  in  Christ  can  do  each  and  everyday.

Change  is  often  bumpy,  clumsy,  awkward,  and  uncomfortable  but  is  can  be  an  opportunity.    The  opportunity  is  to  discover  why  we  come  each  week  or  each  day  to  Eucharist.    Are  we  here  for  the  words,  or  for  united  hearts  in  the  Spirit  of  the  Risen  Christ  that  can  renew  the  face  of  the  earth?    I  opt  for  united  hearts  praying  above  and  beyond  the  words  we  use.
