1924 Stutz Sport Brougham pulled from garage after nearly six decades

For Vancouver-area classic car buffs, it was a chance to see a time capsule in the form of an 87-year-old car that had been stored for most of its life. The Internet was buzzing and telephone information was being exchanged right up until noon on Remembrance Day when the garage doors were finally opened.

The 86-year-old owner had built the house in Coquitlam in 1949 – the same year his father had sold him the car for $1. Even then, the 1924 Stutz Sport Brougham was considered a really old car. People in the neighborhood had heard about the old car but few had seen it. It had remained parked inside the closed garage since the early 1950s.

Earlier in the fall, Coquitlam classic car enthusiast Dave Waters had gone to the house to check out a garage sale. He had known about the car since the mid 1980s when he had attended another garage sale and was invited to see the old Stutz.

This time, it was the owner’s daughter who was holding the garage sale and he inquired if the Stutz would finally be put up for sale. That would lead to the day when more than 100 people crowded into the driveway of the home to see the car finally come out of decades of storage.

The history of the car could be seen on two display boards taped to

the garage door. In its early days, the 1924 Stutz Sport Brougham had been photographed at the family cottage in White Rock and outside the Coquitlam house when it was under construction in 1949.

It was originally light blue and black but somewhere in its life had been painted green. This fully closed sedan was a very luxurious car at a time

Saunders Family Foundation supports community groups

Local community groups were the beneficiaries of the Saunders Family Foundation’s generosity in a special presentation at the Saunders Subaru dealership last Thursday.

The family raised more than $35,000 through its annual charity fundraising golf tournament earlier this year. Last week, dealership owner Bob Saunders and the Saunders family distributed funds to numerous organizations, from minor hockey, baseball and soccer to local arts programs throughout Greater Victoria, Duncan and Salt Spring Island.

The major recipient, the West Shore Parks & Recreation Rotary Picnic Playground, received $5,000 toward a new, inclusive playground that will serve the needs of both able-bodied children and those with physical challenges. Additional grants are also being finalized.

Favourite memory in the van? “Looking in the rear view mirror to see four boys fast asleep! I turned up the music and enjoyed a different type of peaceful drive all by myself.

“I never imagined driving a mini van, however it’s all in how you feel in a vehicle and for me I feel great as the Odyssey provides us the space and comfort a family of six needs to enjoy any ride!”

when most cars were open to the weather with folding tops.

Hector Quagliotti-Romano of 3937 Granville St., a property on the corner of Granville and Laurier Street in Vancouver’s upscale Shaughnessy area, purchased the Indianapolis, Indiana-built Stutz Sport Brougham on April 23, 1924. The BC license number was 42476.

He opened and ran the Colonial Theatre at 605 Granville St. until his death in 1968. The theatre was purchased by the City of Vancouver and demolished to make way for development in 1972.

Mr. Quagliotti-Romano’s new aluminum-bodied Stutz was one of the first cars to have hydraulic brakes and came with optional wire wheels and balloon tires. The luxury car cost nearly $5,000 at a time when eight or nine Model T Ford cars could have been purchased for the same money.

Stutz built its first car as a racer to enter the famous 1911 Indianapolis 500. It finished 12th, stunning the racing world. Stutz cars were built from 1911 to 1934 for a total production of only 35,000. They were nearly all custom-bodied luxury models. Many were considered to be North America’s first two-passenger sports cars.

The famous Bearcat was the smallest and cheapest of them all. It was a street-legal racer with a four cylinder engine priced at less than $2,000. It was the forerunner of the Corvette and Mustang in its day. Because of its catchy name, it has become famous and expensive today

After just three years, the 1924 Stutz was sold to George Paris of 610 Jackson Ave. in Vancouver. Mr. Paris may have run into a little money trouble by 1929 as the world slid into the Depression because the car ended up in the custody of the Peerless Finance Company. The company was owed approximately $500 and they thought they had repossessed a 1925 Stutz; they offered it for sale for just $746.44.

Ludvig ‘Louis’ Ostenstad, a New Westminster millworker purchased the car, keeping it for the next 20 years before selling it for a dollar to his son, John Ostenstad, who worked at Fraser Mills. The Stutz became the family car for newlyweds John and Barbara Ostenstad, who built their new home on

Cottonwood Avenue, then a gravel road running through the woods on Blue Mountain.

“I remember riding in the back seat with my brother Bill when we turned the corner from Cottonwood on to Blue Mountain,” says Jane Ostenstad outside the garage in which that very car was stored. “They called the rear doors suicide doors because they opened backwards. Bill was holding on to the door handle and the door suddenly flew open and he tumbled out. I cried out to my parents that Bill had fallen out into the ditch.”

Her mother in the front seat said: “Oh Janey, be quiet.” Her parents thought it was a joke until John Ostenstad looked behind him to discover his son missing. They retrieved Bill from the ditch where he was none the worse for wear.

John Ostenstad put the old Stutz up on blocks in the garage behind his Coquitlam home when he replaced it with a 1951 Dodge. It would remain in

Christina finally unlocked the garage door to reveal the 1924 Stutz that had belonged to both their grandfather and father. It had been their first family car and is filled with memories.

The two sisters are pleased that the car is going to the oldest daughter of Vintage Car Club of Canada member George Hoffman, who learned about the car from fellow club member Dave Waters. “We told Dad and he was really pleased to know the car is going to a good home,” Jane Ostenstad says.

George Hoffman hopes to get the old Stutz running and driving. His daughter Judy and son-in-law John Green plan to leave the car as original as possible because “it’s only original once.”

So if you go to a car show in the future and see an old green Stutz with lots of patina, you will know how it stayed so well preserved. It didn’t turn a wheel for nearly six decades.

Traffic lights are used to organize the flow of traffic on our roads. Throughout the years, we have been taught that a red light means “stop,” a yellow light means use “caution” and a green light means “go.”

However there can be so much more meaning to each of these “colours.”

Green lights, for example, are often misused and many drivers don’t take the extra time they should at intersections.

Typically, when we see a green light, we think “GO!” But, we really should be

thinking, “Is this light going to change before I am through the intersection?”

There are two types of a solid green light. A fresh green light is a green light that has just turned green. It is not likely to turn yellow soon. As you are approaching a fresh green light, scan – Left, Centre and then Right – before you enter the intersection.

You may enter the intersection on a green light:

1. If it is safe for you to do so;2. If the intersection is clear.The second type of green light would

be a stale light – one that has been green for a long time, and is about to turn yellow. Chances are, if you didn’t see

the light turn green – it’s STALE. Stale green lights can cause problems

when drivers are not prepared. Many drivers don’t know how to recognize a stale green light and are so not prepared for the light to turn yellow. When it does, the worst situation happens: Hesitation!

As drivers approach a stale green light, they need to watch their speed, road conditions and the traffic behind you. Ask, “If this light turns yellow, can I stop?” Do this until the POINT OF NO RETURN. This is the point at the intersection where you can no longer stop safely in time.

If the light turns yellow and you have

passed the point of no return, you would remain at your speed – scanning left, centre and right – and if it’s safe, travel through the intersection. Never accelerate to get through the intersection faster – just keep doing the speed limit.

Enforcement is being stepped up at intersections throughout British Columbia, especially in the Victoria area where there are five of the most dangerous intersections listed. Intersections can be the most dangerous place for drivers so take the time to learn what you can do to stay safe.

Mazda Motor Corporation’s newly developed Skyactiv-G 1.3-litre gasoline engine has won the 2012 Technology of the Year Award.

The award is presented annually by the highly respected Automotive Researchers and Journalists Conference of Japan. The breakthrough Skyactiv-G 1.3-litre engine has been developed to create a lightweight design that produces more from less.

An ultra-high compression ratio is a central feature of the engine’s design and its 14.0:1 ratio (the world’s highest in a mass-production model) has previously only been seen in high-performance racing engines.

Equipped with direct-injection, the Technology award-winning, smaller capacity 1.3-litre engine exhibits outstanding efficiency, especially under high load at low rpm.

LOS ANGELES: While luxury and high-performance vehicles once again took centre stage at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the green movement certainly wasn’t left behind.

More than 70 new green vehicles were on display, showcasing hybrid, full electric, hydrogen, fuel cell and natural gas technologies.

On top of that, many manufacturers also exhibited their clean diesel models, including the Volkswagen Passat TDI that was one of five cars in the running for the 2012 Green Car of the Year.

Across the board, one notable factor in the manufacturers’ offerings this year was the significant increase in fuel efficiency.

Even high-performance vehicles are delivering vast improvements in efficiency over previous generations and the number of vehicles using some form of electrification has grown by more than 25 per cent since just last year’s show.

FORD One of five cars nominated for Green Car of the Year, the Focus

Electric is part of Ford’s “green fleet” that currently includes gas-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles.

This fully electric car is a zero emissions, gasoline-free version of the popular Focus model. It is launching in 19 pilot markets throughout the U.S. late this year.

One neat feature is an advanced active liquid heating and cooling system in its lithium-ion battery packs to help it function better under extreme temperature conditions.

Meanwhile, the Transit Connect Electric small commercial van is already on the market in limited numbers and the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid will join them in North America next year.

HONDA CIVIC NATURAL GASNamed the 2012 Green Car of the

Year, the Honda Civic natural gas vehicle is currently only available in the U.S. at a price of $26,155.

It has a range of 386 km (240 miles) on a tank of compressed natural gas – almost two-and-one-half times the range of the typical all-electric vehicle.

A new Civic hybrid model was also shown, featuring a 1.5-litre engine and a lithium-ion battery system.

HONDA FIT EV Another car not yet available in Canada, the Fit EV battery-powered car will be offered in extremely limited numbers in the U.S. next year. It will have a range of about 197 km (123 miles).

HONDA INSIGHT HYBRID This four-door, five-passenger hybrid hatch has been updated for 2012 with several new exterior treatments and a major interior makeover.

LEXUS GS 450h The all-new GS family made its auto show debut in Los Angeles, including the gas-electric hybrid GS450h.

This new GS model incorporates improvements to the hybrid power train and is equipped with the second-generation Lexus Drive system. With a total power output of 338 hp, the new GS 450h does 0-100km/h in about 5.6 seconds. Meanwhile, Lexus says fuel efficiency should be improved by more than 30 per cent. The car features a

Drive Mode selector, so that in addition to the normal mode, the driver can customize using Eco, Sport, Sport + and EV modes.

JAGUAR C-X16 This concept sports car is expected to reach production within the next few years.

It’s what one Jaguar executive calls “our compelling vision for a 21st century Jaguar sports car. It embodies the established Jaguar strengths of sensual design, animal-like agility and inspirational performance.”

On top of that, it’s a hybrid vehicle, powered by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 gasoline engine, supplemented by an electric motor “push to pass” system that catapults the car from 0-100 km/h in about 4.4 seconds.

MITSUBISHI This all-electric car debuted last year at LA, but this year, a final production version was on display.

The 2012 i-MIEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) will arrive in Canada by year’s end and will be the most affordable mass-produced all-electric vehicle on sale in the Canadian

marketplace. The i-MIEV has a 66 hp electric motor that propels it to a top speed of 130 km/h with a targeted range of 135 km. A five-door, four-passenger zero-emissions car, the basic i-MIEV will start at $32,998, going to $35,998. With government rebates, though, the starting price should be in the $25K range.

BMW brought in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton to

help introduce these two purpose-built electric and electric-hybrid vehicles.

Made primarily of carbon fibre, they will be available in 2013 and 2014 respectively. The i3 Concept is a compact, city vehicle with large glass doors that open coach-style. The i8 Concept is a sleek, low-slung silver and glass sports car with flip-up doors.

AUDI Made of a carbon composite material, the Audi e-tron Spyder is a

study of an open sports car. With a plug-in hybrid drive, the

e-tron two-seat sports car is equipped with a 330 hp twin turbo V6 diesel engine at the rear axle and two electric motors producing 64 kW at the front axle. At just 1,450 kg (3,196 lb), the e-tron Spyder accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and has a governed top speed of 250 km/h.

The Motor Press Guild, the largest automotive media association in North America, has announced the all-new 2012 Audi A7 as the winner of the first-ever Motor Press Guild Vehicle of the Year Award.

The 2012 Audi A7 was one of five finalists chosen over a two-month period by a select panel of MPG journalist members who test and review cars on a regular basis.

The final five vehicles were evaluated and ranked by the entire journalist membership at MPG’s Track Day event on Oct. 11 and 12.

Vehicles were rated in the categories of safety, quality, value, performance/handling, design/style, environmental/green impact and technology/innovation.

In addition, journalists were encouraged to consider models that reflect the unique style of Southern California.

Vehicles were required to be all new or substantially changed from the previous year’s model and available at dealerships on or before Jan. 1, 2012.

Other 2011 VOTY finalists (in alphabetical order) are the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, 2012 Fiat 500, 2012 Ford Focus and the 2011 Hyundai Elantra.
