rare…
This issue of SN/NS covers the news of the
Canadian communities for the months of
December and January, as it did for the last few
issues-whereas it used to be monthly- for the
reason that the news from the houses are rather
scarce… (R.T.)
SHERBROOKE.
grandement besoin. » On les a entendus ! L’objectif

parce qu'on s'aime beaucoup, on va donc fêter Noël
Bosco Show 2017

TORONTO-HAMILTON
From Glory to Glory
During the months of December 2016 and January
2017 the Salesian Family in Toronto and Hamilton
passed from glory to glory becoming enriched by
God in its spiritual, apostolic and social activities.
December 2016
Mrs. Josephine Muscat, President of St. Benedict
Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society presents a plaque to
Mr. Ray Galant, Grand Knight of the St. John Bosco
Knights of Columbus Council in gratitude for the support
the Knights give to the Vincentians.
Andrew and Kristen Calabria and Baby Amaya joyfully
played the Holy Family in St. Benedict’s Live Nativity.

Fr. Jim Berning poses with Norbey and Isbelia Ordoñez
and their sons Kevin and young David. Norbey and
Isbelia are Salesian Cooperators who came to Canada
from a very active Salesian parish in Colombia, South
America.
Later in December the Local ADMA group held its
Advent day of recollection. Then Salesian
Cooperators hold a Christmas party after their
regular meeting. Both the meeting and the party had
to be relocated from Don Bosco Residence to St.
Benedict Hall because the residence furnace broke
down the night before. The furnace, thanks be to
God, was repaired in time to provide a warm
welcome for Fr. Frank Kelly’s sister, Theresa, who
came to spend the Christmas holidays with the
community.
FMA, SDB and DBV gloried in their consecration
by God as they gathered for a Christmas novena
prayer moment and their annual Christmas party in
the warmth of Don Bosco Residence.
After a hiatus of one year, St. Benedict Choir under the
direction of Mrs. Tammie Cancelli perform their highly
appreciated Christmas Concert.
Busy days of school and parish confessions, a Saint Benedict
Choir concert, a Knights of Columbus sing-a-long at Kipling
Acres Long Term Care Centre, a Christmas Novena of Masses,
Christmas baskets for the needy and numerous youth group
celebrations in December helped prepare Salesian young
people and their families for the celebration of Christmas itself.

The final touch of glory before the first of the
Christmas Masses was the heart-warming Live
Nativity at St. Benedict.

with her presence. Pictured are youth leaders, Salesian
Cooperators, FMA and SDB.
During the month, also, the SDB Community
praised God for the gift of life as it celebrated the
birthday of Fr. Jim Berning and of Fr. Mario
Villaraza. The month and year closed finding Fr. Jim
and seven members of the Salesian Youth Office in
Vancouver, BC participating in the annual Rise Up
Conference.
January 2017
The first month of the New Year brought blessings
of its own in the form of five celebrations of
Salesian sanctity (Blessed Luigi Variara, Blessed
Laura Vicuña, Blessed Bronislas Markiewicz, St
.Francis de Sales and St. John Bosco). Fr. Jim
organized a vocation discernment evening that
included Bro. Branden Gordon and Bro. Simon Song
in Toronto during their postnovitiate inter semester
break. The community also had the opportunity to
host Fr Jose Thottukadavil, a Missionary of Saint
Francis de Sales (Fransalian), in town visiting
family. The Fransalians like the SDB, FMA and
Salesian Cooperators of the three provinces of North
America belong to North American Salesian
Network (NASN). Salesian young people kept up
their tradition of coming together for a WinterDaze
camp experience that loudly! echoed their
SummerDaze camp experience.
Fr. Tim Zak poses with the Salesian Community of
Etobicoke and Hamilton.
The two highlights of the first month of the year,
though, came in the form of the Annual Provincial
Visitation, this year conducted by Fr. Timothy Zak,
Vice Provincial, and the celebrations in honour of
St. John Bosco. For the second year in a row SDB,
FMA, Salesian Cooperators, ADMA, DBV, four
SDB and FMA Past Pupil groups and VIDES
participants glorified God in thanksgiving for St.
John Bosco and their Salesian identity both at Mass
and at a joyful reception at St. Benedict Church.

==================

Let us hear the cry of the many children who are
enslaved. No one must remain indifferent to their
sorrow.
7
As Salesians we believe that the
school and the playground are the
right place for the child or
adolescent, not the battlefield
The exploitation of children as soldiers is
unfortunately a common practice in many of the
conflicts that are still active in the twenty-first
century. The International Day against the use of
child soldiers on 12 February should be a warning of
what remains to be done to eradicate this cruel and
inhuman practice. As Salesians, we believe that the
school and the courtyard are the right place for the
child or adolescent, not the battlefield.
The showing of the documentary "Alto el Fuego"
(Ceasefire) in Rome, Brussels and Madrid has
allowed people to see the real faces - those of
Manuel and Catalina - of this terrible reality. Even
though this phenomenon is far removed from the
everyday life of many of us, it makes us renew our
commitment to put an end to this exploitation.
As Salesians, we highlight three key aspects:
The child is a victim and is never to blame for his
or her situation: even in cases where they joined an
armed group “voluntarily”, the decision is actually
enforced by many forms of poverty, or is the only
way out from various forms of abuse. It is essential
to work for the restoration of their rights as citizens,
with a multidisciplinary team of professionals.
Education is the key to success in the long process
of reintegration: an education appropriate to the
situation of each individual is essential for their full
social inclusion. It is imperative that the educational
programme be individualized, adapted to the
circumstances and the situation of each individual.
At the same time, it is necessary to combine the
various professional, cultural and affective aspects
of a person
Prevention as a lasting solution to the
recruitment of children as soldiers: prevention is
in the DNA of every educator. We have to
implement all the strategies available to prevent the
recruitment of minors, given that the personal, social
and financial costs of these strategies are far lower
than the cost of the reintegration processes currently
underway.
One of the key proposals of "Ciudad Don Bosco"
was the preparation of materials to prevent
recruitment. The impact of "Alto el Fuego" is going
far beyond the borders of Colombia and is showing
the real faces of the bloody conflict that Colombia
experienced. ANS 10 Feb. 2017
