PARTS OF A PLANT

Just like the human body has different parts, a plant’s body also has different parts.

From the figure above:

The part of plant which grows above the ground is called the shoot.

The shoot has stem, branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits.

The part that grows below the ground is called the root.

There are two types of roots:

1) Tap root

When a main root grows from the end of the stem and many

small roots grow from the main root, it is called tap root.

Example- Plants like bean, mustard have tap roots.

2) Fibrous root

When a number of roots grow from the end of the stem it is

called fibrous roots. Example- Plants like rice, wheat, grass have

fibrous root.

THE STEM

The stem grows above the ground. When the stem is hard, strong and woody it is

called a trunk. Example - Neem tree. Some plants have green, weak and soft stems.

Example- Money plant.

FUNCTIONS OF THE STEM

The main function of the stem is to hold the plant upright and support its branches.

It carries water to the leaves from the roots.

It carries food made by leaves to different parts of the plant.

In some plants the stem grows below the ground and stores food.
