Help Us Put Faces and Names Together…

Do you recognize any of these members of the 1962 Notre Dame Band pictured with Sister Mary Edwina Butler, RSM? The Advancement Office would love to hear from you.

3A Ministry of the Sisters of Mercy

A MESSAGE from the PresidentMercy comes from the heart when we serve others.

Dear Friends,

I hope this issue of our Reflections enlivens and deepens your relationship with our school. You will see that we have evolved with the times but that our values and traditions as a school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy remain the same. Our teachers are enthusiastic and continue to make every effort to challenge their students; our students are eager to learn and are involved in many activities. Parental support remains strong and many are volunteers in the Advancement and Guidance Offices or (and) contribute their services in the theatre, concession stands and as chaperones. Our days are as full as our weekends and evenings!

Reflections will give you a glimpse of the opportunities offered Notre Dame High School. The FIRST Robotics team emerged in 1st place at the Finger Lakes Regional Competition, earning them an invitation to the world competition in St. Louis, MO. The Quiz League journeyed to Chicago to participate in the Small School Nationals Quiz Bowl as a result of their success in the local competition. Our Concert Choir travelled to NYC to perform at Carnegie Hall on March 26th and the Concert Band & Jazz Band performed at the Heritage Festival in Nashville on March 31st and April 1st. The Drama Department, under the direction of Jeff Mathews, produced two spectacular musicals. Cinderella in the fall and Nunsense in the spring. Both productions were enjoyed by large audiences and our students had an opportunity to showcase their musical, dancing and acting talent. Notre Dame will be recognized as a Program of Excellence by the Chemung County Youth Bureau for our service to the local soup kitchen. Our students are servants and leaders in our school and in the community.

In “We Knew Him Before We Met Him” you can read a story of how two generations connected. Graduates from the Class of 1968 & 1998 have an unusual story. We are always happy to hear your memories or updates and have you stay in touch through Keeping Track or better yet, by coming back to Notre Dame where you will always be welcome.

With Affection,

Sister Mary Walter Hickey, RSMPresident

P.S. We need to applaud the loving efforts of Theresa Rodzai McNamara’66 and Mary Ellen Maloney Coseo’61 who have organized the campaign for the Boiler Fund. Their efforts have resulted in numerous contributions which will help pay for the boiler, as well as, the updated valves and thermostats. We are grateful to our dedicated alumni for spearheading this fundraising effort and to alumni for responding in generosity. Please see the story on page 4.

4 Notre Dame High School Reflections 2017

Mary Ellen Maloney Coseo’61 and Theresa Rodzai McNamara’66 were very instrumental in raising funds for our boiler project. They remarked that the most rewarding part of their endeavor was reaching out to our fabulous alumni to seek a class representative for the classes from 1955 to 2010. They were inspired with the incredible and amazing willingness of the alumni to extend themselves and give the extra effort needed to raise money for this project. It spoke volumes of their loyalty to Notre Dame.

Mary Ellen said that “a friend pointed out that the best way to raise money is to reach out to those who are sympatric to our cause. Reaching out to our alumni proved this beyond our expectation.”

Notre Dame is very grateful for Mary Ellen and Theresa’s dedication to this project. We are appreciative of the many people who have supported this cause. God bless you.

10 Notre Dame High School Reflections 2017

“My affinity for mathematics and science is as much a part of my identity as what’s written on my driver’s license. While this interest manifested itself during my ele-mentary school years primarily through the classes I took and the homework I did, high school, and the greater capacity for op-portunity and growth that accompanied it, allowed me to pour my academic interests into a less formal, more kinesthetic front: Notre Dame’s FIRST Robotics Team.

Team 3799, nicknamed “Electric Fire,” participates annually in the First Robotics Competition (FRC); my final year on the team marks the team’s seventh competi-tion cycle since its genesis. Every year, Electric Fire’s preseason begins with weekly meetings, aimed to initiate new members, reunite old ones, and gain a general sense of intrigue and basic proficiency with top-ics related to engineering, such as drive trains, nuts, bolts, washers, motors, gear-boxes and Java coding. Then, in early January, every FRC team all over the world is presented with the rules to a byzantine, overcomplicated game and tasked to build a robot than can compete against other ro-bots in said game. We have just six weeks to complete this robot until it takes resi-dence in a large plastic bag. In late March, 3799 travels up to the Rochester Institute of Technology, for the Finger Lakes Re-gional, a yearly gathering of approximately 50 teams, all vying for their ticket to the World Championships in St. Louis. After over a day’s worth of qualification rounds, a single elimination tournament deter-mines the three co-champions. In 2017, my final year on the team, one of those three champions was 3799 Electric Fire, to the surprise of our entire ND team.

This year was the team’s first trip to Worlds since 2011, meaning that our 2017 bid

was every student’s first experience in St. Louis. The experience was equal parts overwhelming, exhausting, enlightening, and broadening. For me, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and one which I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.

To most people, the word robotics brings about images of closed-off geniuses work-ing a small, messy room, assembling pieces together in wild configurations indiscern-ible to most human beings. But FIRST Robotics is more than just robots. Being on a robotics team requires teamwork both within the team and among other teams. It requires a business-savvy attitude, neces-sary to accrue the funds to build the robot and send the team to competitions. It re-quires a desire to push one’s mind beyond new frontiers and persevere when an obsta-cle presents itself. But most importantly, it requires a willingness to grow. During my freshman year, I was reticent to offer my input on most occasions, insecure about what little I could offer to the team. But through the years, being surrounded by ex-perienced engineers, mentors, and students has fostered an environment in which I can offer solutions, explore ideas, and interact with others at a level I could not imagine myself doing three years prior.

I will never be able to repay Team 3799 for the self-assurance and confidence it has instilled in me. While robotics has taught me many things, like how to use an Allen wrench, discuss game strategy with a stranger, write computer code, compro-mise, discuss, agree, and disagree, the most important is this, which I believe every ro-botics student can declare wholeheartedly: I have the potential to do things I could never even imagine.” Francisco P. Notre Dame is celebrating the success of both our Quiz League and Scholarship Challenge Teams! Both teams are mentored by Mrs. Charity Spencer from ND Math Department. Mrs. Spencer works with these groups of highly motivated students throughout the school year as they train for academic competitions. Team members practice not only effective group dynamics but also take personal responsibility for ambassadorship of their school which is a formal requirement monitored by event officials and judicial panelists. This year, WATS Broadcasting sponsored the 36th season of intense intellectual competition known to local schools as the Scholarship Challenge. Our students embrace the motto of Scholarship Challenge which is The Power of Thought…The Magic of the Mind. The goal of the invitational competition is to test general knowledge in a quiz show style format. The four member team of seniors, along with alternate team members and advisor traveled to Sayre, PA placing first in the division. The Notre Dame team was awarded the grand prize for their achievement!

Notre Dame goes head to head against schools in the Southern Tier of NY and the Northern Tier of PA during the Quiz League season. Students across various grade levels refine their skills of rapid fire answering of questions ranging from academia to pop culture. The success of our students locally earned them an opportunity to compete at the national level in Chicago. ND Quiz League was amongst the 90 teams in attendance, 30 of which were in the private/charter school division. Our team competed in 9 matches and was just shy of advancing to the final round. Notre Dame placed 3rd amongst the 15 teams in the consolation round. Having traveled to Chicago, Notre Dame students and chaperones were able to take in the sights, sounds and fare of the city as well.Congratulations to our Quiz League and Scholarship Challenge team members on your triumph in the academic arena!

Notre Dame High School boasts the success of our theatre department under the skilled direction of Jeffrey Mathews. This past year our young thespians took on the unusual challenge of two musicals for the 2016-2017 school year and Mr. Mathews directed senior actors who have worked with him since entering the theatre program as freshmen. During the grand production of The Secret Garden, audiences were captivated by the majesty of the set design, the elaborate costuming and the talent of over 30 Notre Dame performers. Additionally, Notre Dame musicians were among the 24 orchestra members providing musical accompaniment. Our theatre students are charged with taking on a persona or characteristics that are often quite different from their own. In order to portray their character in a believable way, they must place themselves in the shoes and mind of someone whose viewpoint may be very different from their own. They must gain an understanding of human behavior and psychology and work in collaboration with other cast members and crew to develop clear, precise and exemplary communication skills. Even the youngest actors demonstrate dedication as they make choices to manage their time, govern their activities, and commit to the success of the entire ensemble. In the spring, Mr. Mathews and the Notre Dame Drama Department presented Nunsense, a musical comedy that relies heavily on audience participation. The small but artistic cast kept the audience in stitches with whimsical dances, beautifully executed songs and comedy delivered with precision. These actors learned how to interpret the audience’s response and confidently take command of the stage; often their dialogue was spontaneous which highlighted their ability to process the moment and react in a cooperative manner toward the ultimate goal of entertaining family and friends in attendance. Both productions were a huge success! For these students, the stage replaces the athletic field, the costumes replace the uniform, and the script dictates the strategy. We are extremely proud of our team in the drama department!

For the past three years, the Notre Dame Concert Choir has joined the bands in travel-ling to the Heritage Festival adjudications. They have visited Philadelphia, Boston, and Wash-ington D.C. where they performed for nation-ally acclaimed adjudicators as well as in public while seeing the sights of each city. The first year the chorus participated they earned a sil-ver rating, going on to earn gold ratings for two years in a row after that. Because they reached this new level of choral excellence, the Notre Dame Concert Choir qualified to be a part of the National Youth Choir and was invited to perform at the Festival at Carnegie Hall this year. At the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, students were given six demanding pieces of choral music to learn in preparation for their Carnegie Hall debut in March. Three of these pieces were in a foreign language, and they all presented new musical challenges that inspired our group to reach new heights. Every student had to have their part memorized, so students diligently practiced, recording their individual voices and receiving feedback from their director on how to tackle the exacting musical requirements for each voice part. At the end of March, our students and parent chaperones boarded the bus to NYC in great anticipation of accepting the prestigious honor of being able to perform on the Carnegie Hall stage. For four days and three nights, our students spent hours in rehearsal at the Roo-sevelt Hotel under the guidance of renowned

Carnegie Hall Debut: Notre Dame Concert Choir choral conductor Lynne Gackle perfecting their

performance skills in the National Youth Choir of over 300 students. Six other gold-rated choirs joined Notre Dame, from California, Colorado, Utah, Virginia, and Florida. In these rehearsal sessions, students gained real-world exposure to the professional world of music. Between rehearsal sessions, they had time to enjoy the sights of the City, including seeing a Broadway Show, visiting the Top of the Rock, hearing the choir at Sunday Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral (and meeting Cardinal Dolan!), and, of course, shopping and sightsee-ing in Times Square and Rockefeller Center. Nothing beat the moment when our students arrived at the world-famous Carnegie Hall stage door, dressed elegantly and breath-lessly taking in the ornate majesty and his-tory of the theater. According to some of our students, the best view of the hall was from the stage, looking out at the rows and mul-tiple balconies of red velvet seats and audience members. The glorious, powerful sound of the combined voices in the National Youth Choir is one that none of us will forget...an experience that can only truly be appreciated live and in the moment, but is preserved on an archival CD recording that will be given to the school. The school could not be more proud of the ac-complishments of the Concert Choir this year, and is excited to see participation in the choral program growing at all grade levels, including the addition of a Select Choir this year. Bravo for this once-in-a-lifetime achievement!

In March, the Notre Dame band students traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to participate in the Heritage Music Festivals once again. These festivals have become an annual tradition for our high school music students, and provide students with the opportunity to travel to another part of the country, absorb the culture, see the sights, and perform for a panel of adjudicators. Both Concert Band and Jazz Band earned silver for their music at the festival. In addition to performing at the festival, students toured Nashville and learned more about country music. At the Country Music Hall of Fame, students saw country music memorabilia from throughout its history. That evening, students attended a show at the Grand Ole Opry and saw leading country and bluegrass music artists perform live. They

NDHS Band Newsalso toured backstage after the show and were even given the opportunity to stand onstage at the famous performing venue. The students had a wonderful time touring the Nashville Zoo, seeing the replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, and spending time together. In addition to the Heritage Festival, students also had the

opportunity to tour the infamous 1960’s recording venue RCA Studio B. The Concert Band and Jazz Bands were able to record in the very studio that Elvis himself recorded.

Once again, Notre Dame Students were strong ambassadors of their school. Thank you to the families and administration for supporting the Music Department!

We Met Him Before We Knew Him! I know this sounds a bit unusual at first but here is our story....My husband, Tim McGill, class of 1968, and I were home one afternoon in Pittsford, NY in the spring of 1997 when the mail arrived with the Notre Dame newsletter. Our middle daughter, Katie, had recently been accepted to a number of colleges and had chosen to attend Cornell University in the fall. "Guess what, Katie?" we heard her Dad say from the next room. "The valedictorian of the Notre Dame Class of 1997 has ALSO decided on Cornell!" He was expecting slightly more than the "Ok nice" kind of ho hum answer so no further discussion on the matter ensued. And it was quickly forgotten...or so we thought... Fast forward to the second semester of 1998. Now Katie is a seasoned freshman at Cornell and spring is in the air. She has met any number of wonderful kids from all over the country and fallen in love with this diverse and energetic university of over 13,000 students as well as the college town of Ithaca, NY. As fate would have it she accepted an invitation to have coffee from a nice young man, a freshman like herself, Ben McClintic, and to put it mildly, they hit it off from the start...one date soon led to another. Walking down the "getting to know each other path" by the second or third date the subject of where they each went to High School came up. Now Ben had already told Katie he was from Gillett, PA, about a half hour from Elmira, NY and that he had a younger brother and sister, that he grew up on a 250 acre gentleman's farm complete with sheep, dogs, horse, pond , barn, etc...pretty ideal...and Katie shared her suburban life experiences from the Rochester, NY area with him along with those of being the middle child of three girls. But during one of their conversations on this particular night something clicked in Katie's head and upon hearing "Notre Dame" mentioned, she quickly exclaimed, "Were YOU the valedictorian of your high school class?" to which Ben humbly, and a bit surprised she should ask, replied, "Well, yes I was.." and it all became clear. Here she was, a gal among 13,000 students, and she happened to be out with THAT person her Dad had mentioned one year ago as he was reading form the Notre Dame newsletter! Extraordinary enough but now to the present. Married (yes, one date DID lead to another) for almost 15 years and Ben and Katie are back where they fell in love, residing on 33 acres of beautiful countryside in Ithaca, NY with their three wonderful children. Ben is a cardiologist at the Guthrie Clinic and Katie is a retired third grade teacher and now stay at home Mom to Nathan, Charlotte and Conor. And one final image...their wedding reception at Oak Hill Country Club in July 2002 drew a number of folks from both Notre Dame HS and Cornell University but the toast from the bride's father brought a rousing cheer from theguests, and it began with, "We met our future son-in-law in the Notre Dame newsletter...before we actually knew him!"

When Mike Hosey’75 accepted the McAuley Award in October he remarked that three generations of his family have attended Elmira Catholic High and Notre Dame. He thanked his parents for sending him to Notre Dame and he shared some of his experiences, remembering he was “an average guy who was not a naturally gifted student or athlete” who was challenged and supported by his many teachers. He remembered many by name, speaking fondly of how they affected him and his future.

He spoke of the dedication of his track coach “Larry Matthews who met with us as a team before each meet to match us up to our competition event by event and person by person. He would prepare and challenge us to improve incrementally each week. He would frequently encourage and praise us individually ensuring that we knew our contribution was important to the teams overall result.”

In 1973 the result was that the Notre Dame Track team went undefeated at a time when we competed against EFA, Southside, Horseheads and Corning. Our miler, Larry Stewart, was undefeated, our hurdler, Leo Rutski, was undefeated, our pole vaulter, Tom Wayne, was undefeated and I witnessed a Lebanese immigrant and giant names Gus Faddoul perform a long jump that landed beyond the pit at a high school record of 23 feet.

He noted that his excellent teachers and coaches got the best out of them that they had to offer and remarked about the fruits of their labor. In his small circle of knucklehead friends we have a PhD and highly published, world renowned atmospheric scientist, a retired career corrections officer, a plant manager for printing company, an engineer at Corning Inc., a retired US Army Colonel/Intelligence Officer who won’t tell us what he does now but he does it for a private contractor, our school stage manager ended up as a hardware and software engineer in California in the television industry, we have an HR Director for Wegmans, a Senior Vice President at Fidelity Investments and a college level English Professor.

One of his most significant life experiences took place at Notre Dame when he met his wife at a school dance. He concluded his remarks by saying, “The overriding lesson learned throughout all that this great institution allowed us to experience whether academic, artistic, athletic or interpersonal was that if we are kind to each other and persistently pursue improvement, we can accomplish our goals.”

Catherine McAuley said, ‘The simplest and most practical lesson we know…is to resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow.’”
