TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Hope and Life

Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope.

Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading.

What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News.

CATECHISTS IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM

Thank you to all teachers: educating is an important mission, which draws young people to what is good, beautiful and true.

- Pope Francis

This past school year, we were blessed by over 100 Catechists who journeyed in faith with 822 children & teens through our Faith Formation/Religious Ed. program. These are loving and dedicated parishioners (some of them teens themselves), who

supported parents and caregivers in the continuing mission of nourishing the faith journey of their children and strengthening their relationship with Christ.

As we prepare for another year of growing in faith, we reach out to you, our parish family, to consider participating as catechists to our children and families. Are you passionate about your Catholic faith? Is God nudging you to help bring His message to our children? Please contact Marilyn at 973-538-1358, ext. 121.

TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Continued from last week… 4 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PRAYER

#2. P C Y ...

One of the most common questions people ask about prayer is whether or not it changes God. “If God is unchangeable, and if he already knows the future, why should I bother praying?” This is a valid question with at least two sound answers. In the first place, prayer does not change the unchangeable God, yet it still does make a difference. God ordains not only the end of all things but the means as well. God ordains what He will do in a certain situation or to accomplish a certain purpose, yet He also ordains that prayer will be the means by which He does it. God acts through prayer, not apart from prayer. This means there are many things God will not do if you will not pray. But there are many things He will do if you will pray. The second answer is that prayer is not meant to change God — to change who He is or to alter His eternal purposes. Prayer is meant to change you. As you seek God in prayer, your faith grows. God enables you to see His goodness, His grace, His glory, and even His purposes. As you seek Him, you will find that you are the one who is transformed.

Stay tuned for 3 & 4! Source: Tim Challies, iBeleive.com

“Joy is prayer; joy is strength: joy is love; joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.” - Mother Teresa
