Volume 22 4 August NOTRE DAME NEWS FOUNDATIONS FOR LIFE-LONG LEARNING FROM THE PRINCIPAL ` In a %me long past a man was riding his horse along a path when he came across an elderly man si5ng under a tree. He stopped to have a conversa%on with the old man and during the course of this he no%ced that the man was holding a number of stones very close to him. He asked the old man about the stones and the old man told him that they were magical stones. Most people would dismiss this as the ran%ngs of a deranged person, but the traveller, being a person of great empathy, decided to ask the old man just what the magic was. The old man told him that he could see that the traveller was a person of integrity and that he wanted him to put the stones in his saddle bag. If he did so his reward would be great. So the traveller humoured the old man and, whilst the weight of the stones in his saddle bags would slow up his journey considerably, he loaded them onto his horse and con%nued on his journey. Because of the extra weight he had to travel late into the night to reach his des%na%on, but he didn’t mind because he knew that he had made the old man happy. As he removed the saddle bags, with the inten%on of throwing away the stones, one fell out. He couldn’t believe his eyes as it had turned into a diamond. Upon checking he found that all of the stones had turned into diamonds. The old man certainly was true to his word, the traveller’s reward had come. That night the traveller found it very difficult to sleep, thinking about all that had happened. The following morning he woke very early, loaded the diamonds and rushed, as quickly as his poor horse would allow, back to find the old man. He found him si5ng under the same tree and, removing the saddle bags, returned the diamonds to the old man. The old man asked “Why are you returning my stones, are they not the reward that you were looking for?” the traveller replied, “They are truly a great treasure, but the treasure I seek is to find the wisdom that allows you to give them away so freely”

CLASS NEWS

Year4This term, things have been a bit fishy in Year 4. We have learnt about sharing our gifts with others by reading an old favourite, The Rainbow Fish. In the story the rainbow fish is selfish. He keeps his sparkling scales to himself and does not share with others. As a result, he had no friends. In the end he decides to share his scales with the other fish. He makes friends with them and has a much happier life. In Year 4 we make sure we are always kind, caring and share with our friends so that we can all be happy and enjoy our time at Notre Dame Primary School.

We have been focusing on our learning gifts in religion and have discovered that memory, curiosity, thought and imagination help us to learn. This leads us to wonder at the God who created learning gifts and to celebrate what has been revealed about God: that God is the Revealer of Truths. In art we made some of our very own rainbow fish which we think look pretty amazing.

In geography we have commenced our topic on Vietnam. We are very excited about all the different activities we will complete to investigate and learn about this very fascinating country. At the moment we are working on producing a map that identifies Vietnam and the surrounding countries. We are also researching and presenting statistical facts and information. Did you know that 8% of the Vietnamese population are Christian and that in 2015 the population of Ho Chi Minh City (the capital of Vietnam) was 8.224 million…..now that’s a lot of people in one place! We are eager to learn as much as we can and are embracing the use of technology to explore this topic.

Enhancing Self Esteem in Adolescents This is a course for teachers and others who work with adolescents

Course Aims:

Adolescence can be a difficult path for many young people as they attempt to find their own

identity in an ever changing and challenging world. Based on recent research, this course updates

participants’ understanding and provides practical and creative ways that teachers and mentors can

seamlessly integrate assistance to adolescents within their day- to- day roles.

The course focuses on practical application - teachers will learn strategies aimed to help adolescents

improve their mental wellbeing and build healthy self-esteem. Although this course aims to

empower and up-skill the individual teacher, a number of simple and effective strategies and tools

could be adopted by whole of school with a view to healthy self esteem culture.

The course covers:

How to assess what’s going on for the adolescent while establishing an alliance with them.

How we can roll with the student’s resistance to engaging with us.

Ways of working with adolescents who are depressed, angry, disengaged or emotional.

Highlights will include:

Understanding what happens in the adolescent and adult brain that makes changing some of our

patterns difficult but not impossible.

Ways that people enter change via the ‘Change Triangle’.

How to identify 10 Unhelpful Thinking Styles that appear in the language of young people and how

to respond supportively.

Gaining a deeper understanding of anger and learn 4 strategies that young people use to mismanage

their anger that can keep them stuck in feelings of low self worth.

Learning fun psychological strategies that help us defuse from the unhelpful ‘stories’ that our minds

create that cause us stress and unhappiness.

Active listening skills and empathic responding. Experience through activities why these often

neglected aspects of communication are vital to connecting with an adolescent.

Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm

Fee: $ 220 - includes a light lunch
