SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Second Sunday of Easter (or of Divine Mercy)

Monday: Yom Ha-Shoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day)

Tuesday: St. Mark

Wednesday: Administrative Professionals Day

Friday: St. Peter Chanel; St. Louis Grignion de Montfort; Arbor Day

Saturday: St. Catherine of Siena

The Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday!

How should we prepare for this great Feast of Mercy? Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when “all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened”. (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of His Mercy, now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church.

Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.”(Diary 699) He went on to say “ I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy.” (Diary 1109)

We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy “Divine Mercy Sunday”. We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them too and urge them to return to the practice of their faith!

The Image of The Divine Mercy, which Our Lord requested to be solemnly blessed and venerated on this day, will be on display in our church. Pope John Paul II said that the image portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said “I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish”. (Diary 341, 48) Please take the time to visit with this Image of The Divine Mercy and venerate Jesus.

Jesus said to St. Faustina “I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You”. (Diary 327) “The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the cross. BHappy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him.” (Diary 299)

About the feastday “Divine Mercy Sunday”, Jesus said “Btell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy”. (Diary 699)

Our Lord said “When you go to confession, to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soulB” and “Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy” (1602) Make your confession before Me. The person of the priest isB only a screen. Never analyze what sort of a priest that I am making use of; open your soul in confession to Me, and I will fill it with My light.” (1725)

It is required of all Catholics to confess their sins at least once every year. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet this obligation then take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to receive an outpouring of an ocean of graces that Jesus promises. Those who have already confessed sins for Easter could make room for others. It is allowed for one to go to Confession up to about 20 days, before or after Divine Mercy Sunday.

LOS SANTOS Y OTRAS CELEBRACIONES

Domingo: Segundo Domingo de Pascua (Domingo de la Divina Misericordia)

Lunes: Yom HaShoa (memorial del holocausto)

Martes: San Marcos

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer. The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus? This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from. An adorer is needed for:

Wednesday 3:00 a.m.—4:00 a.m. Wednesday 5:00 p.m.—6:00 p.m.

Thursday 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m. Saturday 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

miercoles 3:00 a.m.—4:00 a.m. miercoles 5:00 p.m.—6:00 p.m.

jueves 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m. sabado 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

THE PASCHAL CANDLE

If you have had the opportunity to take a closer look at our Easter candle, you will notice that the middle is wrapped in what looks like the inner workings of a beehive, the honeycomb. Our candle is called “Apis Mater”, literally translated “Mother Bee. The company describes it in this way: ‘an introspective candle that shines with the joy of community life, the discipline of hard work, and the love concealed in sacrifice.’Vdescription of the colony of bees, but more importantly how we are to live our lives in Christ.

Vand speaking of sacrifice, a huge THANK YOU to ALL who in any way contributed to that which helped our Notre Dame community pray together during Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, the Triduum, and now in this Easter Season. Many, many hours by many, many volunteer workers went into all of it, and we are so grateful! We cannot begin to name each of you individually, from liturgy coordinators, sacristans, ministers of communion, RCIA team, environment and art committee, the choirs, lectors, altar servers, clergy, ushers and greeters, altar care, those who put together the worship aids, baptism coordinators, bread bakers, holy ground keepers, holy sew-n-sews, the Pastoral staffVyes, all those ‘worker bees’ who came together to create that which gives glory to God!!! Together with you in Christ’s service and in grateful appreciation, Dorothy and Marta, Office of Liturgy

Vinnie's on Broadway NOTES FROM THE HEART

The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need.

We have rules to govern our financial assistance to our neighbors in need. Sometimes we break the rules for compassion's, or mercy's, sake. A couple years ago, a disabled Vet waiting for benefits to kick in, came to us with a shut off notice from an electricity provider. The bill was higher than the $60 max we were giving at the time. The two financial aid workers were particularly touched by the situation and went for appeal to the conference president, who is elected to handle problems and say no. Perusing the bill, prez had no problem going to $83 to pay the bill in full. This started the Vet crying, the aid workers getting teary, and prez thinking what's the big deal, its Christmas. At the end of the evening, when looking at the nights report print out, prez saw an electricity payment for $296. That is what the bill was really for. There was not an $83 on the bill at all. God will guide us on the path of Mercy if we let him. In 3 years, the disabled Vet has not been back.

A truck driver passing through had problems that involved the trucking company she worked for having its assets frozen. She had no way to get back to New Orleans. She had not had a paycheck in this new job and had no personal funds to replace the declined company credit card. She came in with a man. We thought they were together. He asked for a bus ticket to New Orleans, also. Later, the woman told a volunteer that she had just met the man after they both were released from jail and did not want to travel with him. She was broke accept for a $16 check from the county jail. Changing a bus ticket required $20 cash. We NEVER give cash. The volunteer grabbed $20 from personal funds and gave it to the woman, who ran off. The volunteer then stalled the other traveler. People sleeping overnight in public places are subject to arrest in Kerrville as a matter of public safety. In this case, county jail called us to help this woman upon her release the next day. She then tried to help someone else, but her own safety needed to come first.

We have 12 families from that suburb of Kerrville, Junction, that regularly come to us for assistance. Junction is NOT in the San Antonio Food Bank district, but in San Angelo. Who ever comes to us for food, we serve. This is why the other sources of food, like Hunters for Hunger and local food drives are so important. Since we can't give SAFB food, we still have food to give. We serve about 500 families food a month. 12 are from Junction.

Last opportunity until fall to help with the Mobile Food Pantry at Schreiner University is Tuesday, May 9. Come and watch us hem and haw when Junction people show up in carpools telling them this is the last time they can come (again) that the maps are developed by the Federal government and San Angelo also does Mobile Food Pantries, in theory. Bring sunscreen and insect repellant. We'll have semi-cool water.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church near the bell tower door. This week’s book feature is Life-Giving Love: Embracing God’s Beautiful Design for Marriage, by Kimberly Hahn. The book starts out with her testimony, touching on her conversion to the Catholic faith, and explaining her and her husband’s (who happens to be Scott Hahn, brilliant theologian and biblical scholar) discussions on how many children they were willing to welcome into their marriage. She writes about their amazement of the “reasonable-ness of the Catholic position” on contraception (before their conversion). Subsequent chapters deal with the culture of life, how to live the design of God in a marriage, natural family planning, and loss of life due to miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility, and sterilization. She draws from scripture and Catholic Church teachings as well as poignant personal experiences from dozens of families who share their stories. From the foreword by Scott Hahn: What the church teaches about love and marriage is true. That should be apparent by now, as nothing else seems to bring about lasting happiness to families. … The Church’s teachings work in the real world because it is based upon our nature. The moral law comes from the God who created the real world, human nature, and our human bodies, so his law does not constrain us so much as perfect us and guide us along right paths. It is no more repressive than a map for a traveler. This is an excellent resource for married couples and couples who are engaged, as well as those of us who seek answers to what our current culture is telling us and our children.
