Behold the Lamb of God When I began to look at the Gospel reading for this Sunday, January 14, I noticed that it fits in well with the Bible Study we’ve just begun here at Notre Dame. This Sunday’s reading from the Gospel of John includes five different names or titles for Our Lord, besides Jesus. First we have “Lamb of God”, “Rabbi”, “Teacher”, “Messiah”, and Christ. Names were very important in the Hebrew life and culture, as was genealogy. As you read the Old Testament, you’ll notice that whenever a man is named, it is almost always in the form of (his name), son of (his father’s name). Genealogy and ancestry were very important to the Israelites because they wanted to emphasize and stress the importance of connection to the Beginning. Before the Fall of Adam, humanity enjoyed an uninterrupted and unimpeded relationship with God the Father, and the ancient Jews wanted to preserve that memory. But why is Jesus named or referred to in the New Testament in so many different ways? The answer to that is because there are so many different aspects about Him and how He is the fulfillment of prophesy. One in particular is “Lamb of God”. The name Lamb of God as applied to Jesus is rooted in ancient Hebrew history. God had sent plagues to Egypt in order to persuade Pharaoh to release the Israelites from bondage, yet Pharaoh resisted. So God sent one final plague to break Pharaoh’s will. Those who belonged to God were to be spared if they took a male lamb, slaughtered it and placed some of its blood on their doorposts. When God visited the land to take the firstborn of each household, including Pharaoh’s, He would pass over those houses that had the blood of the lamb on them. This of course became the Feast of Passover. The Passover and the slaughter of the lamb is a reminder that God is faithful and powerful to rescue His people from bondage and death. Yet, the annual slaughtering of the lamb is just that: annual. It must be continually repeated because although it signifies God’s cleansing and renewal, the sacrifice of an ordinary lamb in and of itself has no power to take away all sin. Jesus is referred to as the Lamb of God in the New Testament because He takes away the sin of the world once and for all. Now that Jesus has come and sacrificed Himself to atone for the sins of all humanity, there is no need to repeat His sacrifice ever. In the Mass, we do not repeat the sacrifice of Jesus. We do not sacrifice Him again. In the Mass, we make His one, unique sacrifice present and in thanksgiving, we receive, sustain and apply its effectiveness in our lives. This is the greatest of all the gifts God gives us, and it is our life, our faith and our hope. Alleluia!

¡Aleluya!

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY January 18-25

The theme for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, “Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power”, is taken from the book of Exodus 15:6. Throughout Biblical history, we hear of the unrelenting determination of the Lord to form a people whom He could call His own. People of Israel were reminded that relationships among its various social groups should be characterized by justice, compassion and mercy. Jesus’ prayer was that those given to Him by the Father would be one, just as He and the Father were one. Today, the Bible continues to inspire Christians to address the conditions that currently undermine the Body of Christ. The Church is called to be a sign and an active agent of reconciliation. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated each year from January 18th to the 25th. Let us work and pray together to bring about Christian Unity in our world today.

Our Lady of the Hills Regional Catholic High School.

Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer.

The lines for the opportunity to see a rock star are indelibly long. The Star of all Stars, Jesus, humbles Himself to share a personal one on one hour, and only a few “wise virgins” fill up their lamps with this wondrous love freely given by Christ. How will He be able to recognize us at the end of our earthly exile if we become as the “foolish virgins’ who are too busy to show love and adoration for this awesome gift that is our Mighty Lord Jesus?

This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.

If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.

sabado 2:00 a.m.—3:00 a.m.

ANNUAL STAND FOR LIFE

The Knights of Columbus invite you to join us at the Kerr County Courthouse on Sunday January 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm for the 14th annual Kerrville Stand for Life. This hour of quiet prayer and witness on Sanctity of Life Sunday is a call to respect all life, especially those still in their mothers' womb. The Stand is sponsored by The Pregnancy Resource Center and will be attended by pro-life groups from many churches in the area. Please join us.

24 Couples from the Notre Dame Parish for our January Date Night. After a sit down meal, we had an inspirational presentation on the sanctity of marriage by Fr. Scott Janysek. After some interesting table discussions, Fr. Scott led the group in a rededication of our marriages. The evening ended with an official wedding cake. Another successful Date Night.

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. From the library of the late Robert Leahy comes Gratefulness: The Heart of Prayer: An Approach to Life

in Fullness, by Brother David Steindl-

Rast. This is an amazing and impressive book, even before taking into account the fact that the author’s first language was German. (He received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Vienna before emigrating to the United States and entering a Benedictine monastery.) But the graceful and evocative text has no hint of German turgidity: “Thanksgiving, blessing, praise, all three belong to gratefulness. … Suddenly everything is simple. We can drop all the big, cumbersome terms. Gratefulness says it all. And gratefulness is something all of us know from experience. Can the spiritual life be that simple? Yes, what we secretly hoped is true: it is all that simple. It is this very simplicity, in fact, that we find most difficult. But why not drop the complications we put in our own way? What brings fulfillment is gratefulness, the simple response of our heart to this given life in all its fullness.” [pp. 82-83] Then, having made his point, he continues for another 140 pages of lively comments on the spiritual life: “The do-gooder is too busy [to risk transformation]. He has no time to bother with flowers. With six tongues the glory of God shouts at us from every lily in bloom, ‘Stop and look!’ Or, as the Psalm puts it, ‘Be still and know’ (Ps 46:10). But the busybody does not understand the language of their silent eloquence. He rushes on: ‘Sorry, I don’t speak Lily.’ His ears are buzzing with the din of his own projects, ideas, and good intentions.” [p. 156] This is an utterly enjoyable book
