A Note from the Executive Director & CEO D. Todd Clough

Noticias Spring, 2013

Dear DICP Supporters,

Recently a relatively new DICP staff member was asked by a long-time Parish participant, “Why are you here?” The inquirer had spent many years in prison, and was a drug addict for 25+ years. He has now been sober for 18 months and his new found and enthusiastic Christianity has completely changed his life. He eagerly continued to press the new staff member and recent college graduate on her reasons for working with our community. She paused, turned from her computer and calmly stated, “Because of Proverbs 31 verses eight and nine”, and then returned to her work. I could tell the new Christian was trying to dig deep into his brain to fetch up these verses. I was heading back to my office to find a Bible when she recited them. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for them-selves, for the right of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” She continued “And Mathew 25:40 gets to it as well – “Truly I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me,” and she has only served for six months at the Parish -- I came to

realize that this young woman who I had not known as one to do church-speak had nailed it. She has a complete understanding of why the Denver Inner City Parish was formed 53-years ago by thoughtful and caring members of First Plym-outh UCC and Montview Boulevard Presbyterian churches. She also spoke for understanding and respecting the hundreds of staff members and thousands of caring volunteers and supporters over many years who have given a piece of their hearts and souls to making this experiment that we call the Denver Inner City Parish flourish, grow and continue to be relevant and productive in positively effecting people’s lives. DICP exists to speak for, support, serve and make a difference in the lives of the needy.

Thank you for your continued assistance with this adventure,

Hunger Programs One of the most powerful tools in creating self-sufficiency happens to be the one that keeps us alive: FOOD. The hunger programs at the DICP are ample, innovative, and interconnected to every DICP program. Our food bank not only feeds the hungry in our immediate community but also supplies the DICP seniors with fresh produce each Saturday. The Seniors additionally receive lunches 3 days a week from Volunteers of America, and one day a week from donations, with any remaining food designated for community members. The youth in the DICP educational programs receive free breakfast, lunch, and a snack: a key to improving grades and advancing in school. Dinner is provided two times a month to those who attend Worship, and monthly meals are served at the DICP Community Brunch. The most innovative hunger program led by the DICP is FERN, the Food Exchange Resource Network. FERN is the only food bank collaborative in Denver. Seven participating food banks have combined their greatest individual strengths and resources to improve nutri-tion and to reduce food waste in Denver.
