IntroductIonI am constantly amazed at just how well the body works. It’s

more complicated than we will ever know, yet surprisingly

simple in so many ways. This is why I have dedicated my

research to observe and understand its intricacies. The body

produces a vast array of amazing chemical, hormonal, and

electrical reactions that directly affect health and disease.

The body is resilient. It utilizes the available resources and works with them—surprisingly

well, given the high stress, poor diet, sedentary lifestyles, and the staggering number

of chemicals most people are exposed to daily. It is our responsibility to create the best

possible environment for our body to do its job. From the foods that we eat to our activity

level, we have an ongoing opportunity to take control and nourish ourselves to keep our

body in balance. If your journey has led our paths to cross, it is likely that you’ve already

discovered the benefits of good diet and activity to reverse bone loss and promote general

health through the Save Our Bones Program.

In conjunction with the Save Our Bones Program, I’ve developed OsteoCleanse™: The

7 Day Bone Health Cleanse, a biannual cleanse that will keep your body in balance and

working efficiently. Initially, the cleanse will help your body purge the osteoporosis drugs

you might have taken, but I encourage you to do it once or twice a year—even if you never

filled your prescription. Think of it as routine maintenance. As you detoxify your body, you

will also be fortifying it with foods and supplements that protect liver and kidney function,

are anti-inflammatory, and help maintain the body’s pH balance in an alkaline state.

OsteoCleanse™ is relatively quick in the world of cleanses and detox diets, some of which

can be as long as three weeks and as restrictive as cutting out solid food and sometimes

even liquids. The program consists of six steps performed over a seven day period. Also,

unlike any other kind of cleanse, OsteoCleanse™ is designed to promote bone health in

addition to protecting kidney and liver function and purging your body of stored toxins

and acidifying drugs.

Will you have to give up certain foods and drinks? Of course, otherwise it wouldn’t be

a cleanse. During the program you will have to avoid meat, dairy, and eggs; however,

hundreds of thousands of vegans will agree — it’s not that bad! I encourage you to eat as

chemical-free as possible, so try to buy organic foods during the course of the cleanse.

You will also incorporate natural whole grains, where appropriate. As grains are acid

forming, keep them to no more than 20 percent of a meal. It will also benefit you to

eliminate alcohol and caffeine. Don’t worry, I’ll provide you with plenty of meal ideas in this

report. And remember, it’s only seven days!

Why cleanse?Our bodies are well equipped to combat foreign substances. The liver and kidneys are

hard at work every minute of the day removing toxic chemicals and waste from the body.

Unfortunately, in the modern world, we are bombarded with chemicals that are added

to food, pumped into the air, and put in the water supply. Perhaps in thousands of years,

evolution may catch up with the industrial revolution, and we won’t need to take the time

to do a cleanse. But for the time being, managing all these chemicals unduly stresses the

liver and kidneys. A modern diet does more than add chemicals; it creates an acidic pH,

which the body must constantly neutralize with calcium and other alkalizing minerals

designed to keep your bones strong, no less. Add to this equation drugs that can inhibit

the body’s filtration system further acidifying the pH and you’ve got a recipe for disaster,

or at least a very compelling reason to cleanse your body.

If you are familiar with the Save Our Bones Program, you know that bisphosphonates,

the most commonly prescribed osteoporosis drugs such as Fosamax®, Actonel®, and

Boniva® (to name a few) have a poor risk-to-benefit ratio, especially when you can

promote bone strength and diminish bone loss naturally. Whether administered orally,

intravenously, or by injection, bisphosphonates temporarily inhibit bone loss at the cost

of new bone formation. The result? The old bones become thicker, at least for a few

years, but they are more prone to fractures. Forteo ® (teriparatide) isn’t much better. In

lab conditions, it was shown to cause malignant bone tumors in rats and several other

undesirable side effects in humans. Yet another osteoporosis drug, Evista ® (raloxifene), a

selective estrogen receptor modulator, can increase the risk of blood clots and strokes.

Here’s the kicker: some of these drugs can also compromise kidney and liver function 1. If

you are coming off of osteoporosis drugs, OsteoCleanse™ is especially important. It will

help purge the drug from your body and reduce the inflammation that osteoporosis drugs

cause.

or hippy communes. Let’s move away from that stereotype, because cleansing has

a ton of benefits. OsteoCleanse™ should be used in conjunction with the Save Our

Bones Program to provide you with a natural way to promote bone and general

health for a lifetime. Additionally, there are other, more immediate benefits. If I

told you there was a diet that lasted only a week and would help you feel more

energetic, look younger, and help restore your body’s balance, you would consider

it, right? I probably had you at look younger, but if you need more reasons to do a

cleanse, here they are:

• More energy and vitality: Your body will spend less energy purging itself of

toxins and more energy doing other important cellular functions (not to mention

sIx steps to a cleaner healthIer BodyYou’ll notice that my cleanse is not as limiting as many others. I tried to focus on what

to consume and why, rather than what to eliminate. Many detox diets include fistfuls

of supplements. OsteoCleanse™ has just two —vitamin C and omega-3 fish oil — which

you might have already. This cleanse follows six steps, each clearly outlined on the

following pages:

plannIng Is KeyMore than likely, this cleanse includes a lot more fruits and vegetables than you are

used to consuming. Please don’t make the mistake of trying to survive on a mish-mash

of raw and cooked veggies and fruits. You are doomed to fail.

Instead, I encourage you to plan your meals in advance. This is a great opportunity to

learn how to prepare new and healthy dishes that satisfy your taste buds and expand

your food repertoire. Yes, you can even make a raw meal! This report has an entire

section of meal ideas, but use a search engine and type in “raw food diet” and “vegan

recipes,” which have no meat or dairy, to find even more ideas. You’ll find meals that

center around vegetables and fruits will fit right into the Save Our Bones 80/20 diet

or are very easily modified. Choose meals that appeal to you and fit the cleanse, then

make a shopping list. Cross check it with the shopping lists at the end of each of the

six steps to be sure that you have everything you need for a successful cleanse.

Good luck. It can be a bit tough to stick with it—I know; I’ve done it. But with proper

planning, you will have some creative and tasty meals to look forward to. Thanks to

the cleanse, your body will operate at maximum efficiency, and you will feel better and

more energized as a result.

step 1: cleanse WIth WaterYou have been hearing and reading about the benefits

of staying hydrated. Most health advocates would agree

that water is the beverage of choice. The first step in

OsteoCleanse™ is to drink only distilled water with fresh

lemon juice.

the functIon of WaterYour body is made up of anywhere from 55 to 75 percent water, depending on body

composition. So, it’s a given that you need to stay hydrated. Why? Water acts as a

solvent in the body, allowing cells to transport and combine carbohydrates, chemicals,

fats, salts, and a host of other elements. Water is imperative for the body to maintain

its electrochemical balance. At just one to two percent deficiency, physical and mental

function is impaired, although a body isn’t medically considered dehydrated until

roughly 10 percent deficiency.

Simply put, without water, cells don’t function properly and eventually dry up and die.

health BenefIts of stayIng hydratedWater has so many benefits that I could fill pages sharing them with you. Here are just

some of the benefits you will get from staying fully hydrated:

Oxygenation: Adequate hydration ensures that oxygen is carried throughout the body.

Prevention: Water deficiency can cause kidney stones, constipation, migraines, ulcers, and

more.

Digestion: Fluids are needed for nutrients to pass through the membrane of the intestines.

Sufficient hydration allows nutrients to be efficiently distributed throughout the body.

Back and Joint Pain: Proper hydration helps lubricate the joints. Dehydration, which

doesn’t allow the body to efficiently cleanse toxins, can actually lead to an accumulation

of toxins, which can cause pain and inflammation in joints. Dehydration can also cause

muscle spasms.

Youthful Appearance: Hydration keeps your skin cells plump so your skin appears

smoother.

Weight Loss: Staying hydrated can help weight loss efforts by acting as a natural appetite

suppressant. It also removes the threat of misinterpreting thirst as hunger.

Water’s functIon In the osteocleanse™Who doesn’t like a getaway near the water? It’s both invigorating and relaxing.

Metaphorically, the cleanse will give your body’s filtration system a beach vacation where

the liver and kidneys will be eased of their burdens and bathed in water that will revive

them and help them to perform well.

In OsteoCleanse™, water is important for all the reasons above

and because water cleanses wastes. The kidneys and liver don’t function properly without

enough water.

I recommend sipping distilled water (or as a second choice, water purified through reverse

osmosis) with a few drops of fresh lemon juice throughout the day. Sipping, as opposed to

gulping, helps your body retain water and won’t overload your kidneys.

A general rule of thumb is to try to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day. For

example, if you weigh 160 pounds, drink 80 ounces of water per day. But it is just that, a

general rule. Feel free to vary your water intake 20 percent in either direction, depending

on your activity level. If you are extremely active, drink more.

not all lIquIds are equalDuring OsteoCleanse™, you will help your kidneys and liver purge the body of excess

toxins. Other liquids besides water may hydrate, but most drinks (milk, coffee, tea,

soda, and artificially-sweetened diet drinks) are acid forming in the body, which

translates into unnecessary work for these organs. Let’s also not forget about the bone

loss cascade that occurs in a chronically acidic body environment.

During the cleanse, it’s important to drink distilled water (or reverse osmosis purified

water if you can’t get distilled). Why? Because not all water is created equal. You

see, water has a neutral base; it is neither acidic nor alkaline. Most of us, however,

have access to municipal tap water that has many toxic acidifying chemical additives,

including chlorine and fluoride. This, in turn, leaches calcium from the bones and

overworks the kidneys and liver because the organs must process the additives and

neutralize the acid.

On the other hand, while distilled water has a slightly acid pH, it facilitates an alkaline

blood and tissue pH because it is negatively charged. Since in nature opposites attract,

distilled water acts as a magnet to positively charged toxic acidic waste, flushing it

from the body.

the poWer of lemonLemon is not just a delicious multi-tasking fruit; it’s a great way

to boost your body’s natural cleansing power. Thanks to its

unique anionic or negative charge, it further ionizes distilled

water. Don’t let its tart flavor fool you; lemon juice is an

alkalizing powerhouse.

No less important is its generous organic vitamin C content,

as well as calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and potassium.

Ascorbic acid, another name for Vitamin C, is a potent free

radical scavenger which functions as an antioxidant and an

anti-inflammatory agent in the body. Additionally, it supports and

raises glutathione levels and activity. Glutathione is also an important

antioxidant that, among other functions, helps the liver filter toxins.

How much lemon should you use? Typically just a few drops of fresh lemon juice will

suffice. For added benefit, try a “power” drink twice a day. Add the juice of half a

lemon to 8-12 ounces of distilled water (if you weigh over 150 lbs, you can add the

juice of a whole lemon twice a day). If you are a diabetic, consult with your doctor

before you try the “power” drink, especially if you are taking diabetes drugs. But feel

free to drink the water with a few drops of lemon juice.

You can determine the sweetest, most nutritious lemons at the grocery store by

choosing one that feels heavy for its size. Also, look at the stem side of the lemon.

Small lines radiate out from this end, much like the points of a star. The more points to

the star, the higher the mineral content.

Choose fresh lemons (better yet organic lemons) instead of bottled lemon juice

because the latter is devoid of nutritional value caused by pasteurization. Also,

remember that fresh lemon juice has a very short “shelf life”. Once it is squeezed

out of the lemon, its electrical charge transforms from negative (anionic) to positive

(cationic) in roughly 30 minutes, so squeeze the juice just before drinking it.

cleansIng InsIde and outThe body’s largest organ is the skin. It creates a defense against the environment,

regulates temperature, moderates blood flow, and excretes toxins from within

the body. Therefore, washing the body with special care is an important part of

OsteoCleanse™. Some of the signs that your skin is in distress are clogged pores, acne,

rashes, and flaky skin. As the skin eliminates toxins, it also absorbs them, so you should

consider the chemicals in your skin care regimen and laundry. (More on these toxins in

Step 5.)

You don’t need to spend a ton of money at a spa to get a good skin detox. An

inexpensive body brush will do. During the cleanse, brush your body firmly with a

soft natural-bristle body brush before you shower to get rid of dead skin cells and to

stimulate oil-secreting glands. If you enjoy baths, add a cup of baking soda and a cup

of Epsom salt to the water; both will help detox your skin.

water. Don’t forget to sip the water. Gulping will overload your kidneys and your body

won’t absorb and retain the water as well.

By hydrating throughout the day with distilled water and lemon juice, you are

consistently providing your body with an alkaline forming means of hydration, not

to mention a steady stream of organic vitamin C without burdening the liver or the

kidneys. Adequate hydration will benefit every single cell of your body.

Another important function of water is cleaning your skin - the body’s largest organ.

Brush your body firmly with a natural-bristle body brush before you shower to get rid

of dead skin cells and to stimulate oil-secreting glands.

I recommend you buy 14 lemons if you are under 150 pounds—2 per day (2

halves for power drinks and 1 lemon to use as needed)

Distilled water or water purified by reverse osmosis

Drink half of your weight in ounces daily, plus or minus 20 percent, depending

Note: How much does your drinking glass hold? Most standard sizes will hold 12-

16 ounces. If you are trying to drink “8 glasses” of water a day, you may not have

to drink as many as you think!

step 2: cleanse WIth fruIts and VegetaBlesIn addition to detoxifying the body of potentially harmful

drugs and toxic buildup, OsteoCleanse™ provides much

needed nutrients that the body

can use for general health, and particularly, bone strength

and regeneration.

Fruits and vegetables should be the primary part of any healthful diet, and they play an

important role in the OsteoCleanse™. That is why cleansing with fruits and vegetables is

Step 2.

Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber

that fuel the body and protect it from disease. They are almost all low in calories, and

those that aren’t, are still packed with healthy nutrition. In OsteoCleanse™, I’ve grouped

powerful fruits and vegetables into five categories, each of which provides benefits that

are ideal for overall health,

bone health, and cleansing the body.

Whether you include them as a part of a meal or as a snack, eat at least one food per

day from each of the following groups as part of the cleanse. I have guidelines on what

a serving is, but you can defer to your own good judgment.

hIgh Water contentBecause a fruit or vegetable has a high-water content, doesn’t mean it is low on

nutrients. Quite the contrary. Here are three that are especially good for you. Choose

at least one and incorporate a serving into your diet every day during the cleanse.

Watermelon (1 cup): This fruit is made up of 92 percent alkaline water, so it promotes

proper pH and is great for bone health. Not only is it delicious, it is a good source

of vitamins A and C, potassium, beta-carotene, and has high levels of lycopene, a

powerful antioxidant that has been shown to build bone. Watermelon can help you

stay hydrated while it cleanses the kidneys and bladder and fights off inflammation

and free radicals.

Celery (2 stalks, 1 cup rough chopped): Lots of water and fiber to get your digestive

system moving, reduce inflammation, and fight free radicals. It is a good source of

vitamin C, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, calcium, molybdenum, manganese, as well as

vitamin B, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, magnesium, vitamin A, phosphorus, and iron.

Cucumber (1 cup): Inside, the cucumber offers vitamin C and caffeic acid, which is

a natural anti-inflammatory. Outside, the cucumber’s skin offers fiber and minerals,

so don’t peel this vegetable. One of the minerals, silica, is essential to the health of

connective tissue, including bone!

antI-InflammatoryYou might be surprised to learn that many fruits and vegetables have powerful anti-

inflammatory properties which can help you counteract the inflammation caused by

osteoporosis drugs, pesticides, chemicals, and poor diet. Try to incorporate at least

one per day into your daily menu during the cleanse, but the more, the merrier.

Grapefruit (1): Grapefruit is packed with vitamin C, plus phytonutrients in the fruit

contain limonoid, which promotes the formation of a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme

helps the liver to make toxins more water soluble. Also, pink grapefruit is an excellent

source of bone smart lycopene.

Garlic (3 cloves): In addition to warding off vampires, garlic is an anti-inflammatory,

a good blood cleanser, and a natural antibiotic. It provides good levels of manganese,

a trace mineral that promotes synthesis of connective tissue in cartilage and bone. It

is also involved in protein synthesis and fatty acid metabolism. Additionally, garlic is a

good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and selenium.

Onion (1 cup): Onions contain the flavonoid quercetin, a powerful anti-inflammatory

compound and natural histamine inhibitor. Red onions have more quercetin than

yellow onions.

Broccoli (1 cup): Nutritionally speaking, broccoli is off the charts. One cup

provides excellent levels of vitamin C, vitamin K, and a host of B vitamins, calcium,

fiber, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids. Plentiful phytonutrients in broccoli boost

detoxifying enzymes.

Apple (1): Vitamin C, fiber, flavonoids, including quercetin, and antioxidants make

apples a natural fit in a detox program. Leave the skins on or you’ll be peeling away its

health benefits.

Red grape (1 cup): Red grapes are a good source of quercetin and resveratrol, another

anti-inflammatory flavonoid. Grapes are also a good source of manganese and vitamin

C. The more intense the color, the better.

Sour cherry (½ cup): Another tasty way to add healthy polyphenols to your diet.

Carrot (1 cup): Carrots are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins A, K, and C.

Bell pepper (1 cup): High in vitamins C and A, bell peppers—no matter the color—help

quell inflammation and fight free radicals. Red peppers also contain lycopene.

lIVer protectIng Artichoke (leaves of 1): Artichoke leaves contain the liver-protecting flavonoid

silymarin, which promotes the synthesis of liver hormones and helps prevent

liver damage. 2

KIdney protectIngParsley (fresh, one sprig): Containing potent antioxidant flavonoids and rich in

vitamins A, C, and K1, parsley can help the kidneys expel waste by increasing blood

flow and filtration.

hIgh d-glucarateCruciferous vegetables and some fruits are an excellent source of d-glucarate, a

phytochemical essential to the detoxification process. 3 D-glucarate suppresses

beta- glucuronidase, an enzyme that inhibits the detoxifying glucuronidation process.

This crucial cleansing pathway flushes toxins and protects cells from damage. Not

surprisingly, it is the means by which most drugs, steroids, and many other toxic

endogenous toxins can be excreted into the urine or bile.

The following fruits and veggies are a good source of d-glucarate. I’ve included some

bonus nutritional data as well. Eat at least one a day during the cleanse:

to JuIce or not to JuIceWhether you heard about it on a late-night infomercial or have a juice bar in your town

or at your gym, you are probably aware of the benefits of juicing. Juicing at home

Here’s where I may find some of you scratching your head and wondering, What

difference does it make if healthy organic food is consumed raw or cooked?

There are a lot of benefits to eating raw food, especially if you happen to be doing a

cleanse. Heating food above 116 degrees destroys some of the food’s natural enzymes

which helps your body to digest the food and to absorb the nutrients in the food. It’s

true that your body has its own enzymes, but why not let the food do the work for

you during a detox?

By eating food in--or close to--its whole natural state, we get all the beneficial

vitamins, minerals and fiber. That’s why eating one raw meal a day is Step 3 in

OsteoCleanse™.

I certainly could go on about the benefits of eating food as close to its natural state as

possible, but instead let’s talk meal ideas. My fear is that you will panic and associate

raw with cleaned and cut vegetables and fruit. If your way of eating a raw meal is to

eat crudités for dinner, your destined to fail or at least be miserable for seven days.

The recipes below were chosen because they are easy to prepare with standard

kitchen tools, fit well with the ingredients required of Step 2 and include ingredients

that you are familiar with. Really, how many of you have dried kelp in the pantry?

Please keep in mind, that to find thousands of recipes, simple type “raw food recipes”

into a search engine.

To cleanse properly, you need just one raw meal per day for seven days. I do

encourage you to try to prepare each of the daily meals at least once, whether you

use my samples or find your own, to add variety to your diet and to expand your food

preparation comfort zone.

What Is “raW”Eating raw means a food is uncooked (at least not above 116 degrees), unprocessed

and organic (free of pesticides and additives). Raw food choices consist of uncooked

fruits and vegetables, dehydrated fruits, sundried fruits and vegetables, raw nuts and

seeds, raw beans, raw honey, fresh herbs, and raw and cold-pressed oils.

raW BreaKfastBreakfast is a good meal to test out your raw preparation skill. If you are a cereal

lover, try mixing berries, chopped or sliced walnuts or almonds, shredded coconut

and a small amount of soaked rolled oats with homemade nut milk for a quick and

protein-filled breakfast. Be sure the nut milk, oats and walnuts comprises less than

20 percent of your meal. A banana or an apple topped with raw almond butter is a

delicious way to complete a raw breakfast and a good way to be sure that oats and

walnuts and other acidifying foods stay within the 80/20 ratio.

smoothIes If you are a breakfast-on-the-go type or not really a breakfast person at all,

smoothies are a perfect way to get the energy and nutrition that your body needs in

the morning.

Nut milk, frozen bananas (or ice cubes) make the best raw, non-dairy smoothies.

What you combine is up to you. Berries, mangos, peaches, kiwis, pineapples--truly,

whatever you like. If you love berries, mix together blueberries, a frozen ripe banana,

nut milk and cinnamon. Add some flaxseed for a wallop of omega-3 fatty acids

(alpha linolenic acid, the kind that is especially helpful to prevent bone turnover) and

minerals. Add real cacao (chocolate) powder for flavor. Make your smoothie thicker

(just reduce the liquid) and top with sliced nuts, shredded coconut and raisins for a

sit-down, eat-it-with-a-spoon breakfast.

Basic Nut Milk

Ingredients

• 2 cups raw almonds (soaked for about 6-8 hrs... don’t worry about the skins)

• 4 cups distilled water

Directions

Put everything but the vanilla bean seeds into a blender or food processor and

blend until smooth. Strain with a piece of cheesecloth or a sieve. Add milk back to

blender/processor and blend in vanilla seeds. Store extras in the refrigerator up to

five days. Shake before use. Note: If you want to make a chunkier breakfast, leave in

some or all of the pulp.

Chunky Mock Muesli

Ingredients

• 1 apple

• 1 avocado

• 1/4 cup fresh orange juice

• handful of chopped nuts, raisins and flaxseed

• 1 stalk celery chopped

Directions

Dice or shred the apple and mix with orange juice. Cream the avocado and add in

all the other ingredients. Mix and enjoy. Make larger apple chunks and this is a nice

side for lunch and dinner.

raW lunch or raW dInner? Lunch is a great time to prepare a raw meal without going too far out of your

comfort zone. After all, salads, wraps and soups are standard lunch fare. A raw

dinner can be a little more challenging, but don’t worry, because here you’ll find

delicious raw recipes for dinner, including soups, entrees and desserts, that are also

easy to prepare.

Tomato Sauce

• 1 pound of fresh tomatoes, diced

• 1 package of sun-dried tomatoes

• 1/2 cup of basil leaves

• 1/4 cup cold-pressed olive oil

Filling

Finely chop the remaining 2 cups mushrooms and in a large bowl, mix in the garlic.

• 3 large Portobello mushrooms, sliced 1/3″ thick.

Marinade

• 1/3 cup olive oil

• 1/3 cup lemon juice

Mix marinade ingredients, pour over mushrooms, and marinate in the refrigerator for a

BenefIts of proper BreathIngMany people today are shallow breathers, meaning only the top portion of the

lungs is filled for oxygen exchange. When you take a breath, notice what expands.

Probably just your chest, and maybe a bit of your diaphragm. Next, take a breath and

concentrate on letting the air fill the bottom of the abdomen, then the top. Your sides

and back should expand. The expansion should be comfortable; you don’t need to take

an unnaturally deep breath, though it may seem odd at first.

I encourage you to practice consciously breathing into the diaphragm twice a day for

10 or more minutes during the cleanse. Do this in a quiet spot and get comfortable. If

you can do this outside or near an open window, it would be even better!

While breathing consciously, you automatically become centered in the body and in

the moment. This meditative state has books and books worth of benefits on its own.

What’s more, with continued practice, deep breathing will become second nature.

Throughout the day, try to be mindful of your breathing. If you catch yourself taking

quick shallow breaths, slow down and breathe deep!

One of the first things that you might notice when you breathe deep into the

diaphragm is that your shoulders relax. When you breathe into the top of your

diaphragm only, your shoulders rise to make room for your expanding lungs causing

the entire chest, back, and shoulder area becomes tense. If these muscles are

relaxed, it reduces chest pain, anxiety, and can help long-term respiratory ailments

by opening the chest to make breathing easier. Deeper breathing improves blood

circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients throughout your body and removes

carbon dioxide.

As far as cleansing with the breathing goes, exhaling is one of the ways in which

the body rids itself of toxins, so fully exhaling allows for the most toxins to pass.

Deep breathing stimulates the organs of the digestive system, moves lymph through

the body, and releases endorphins and neuropeptides in the brain, which make you

feel good.

BreathIng tIps1. It’s your breath

I’m not going to tell you how to breathe. Some people inhale through the nose

and out the mouth and some out the nose, and, believe it not, there is much

deliberation about this. Do whatever makes you most comfortable. Should you

inhale for X amount of seconds and hold before you exhale for X amount of

seconds? This, too, is a hot topic of debate among those who study breathing

techniques and meditation. For our purposes, I am going to suggest that, again,

you do what is comfortable. Draw in air to fill your entire abdomen and exhale the

air. Don’t draw in or exhale sharply. If holding your inhaled breath for a moment

makes you feel good, do it! If not, no problem.

2. Visualize

While practicing deep breathing, it helps to visualize a balloon filling in your

abdomen. First, the bottom gets bigger. As you visualize the balloon filling with air

in your abdomen, you will naturally breathe deep into the belly allowing your lungs

to fill and your abdomen, sides, and back to expand with your breath.

3. Focus

Focusing on both your breathing and your body will help you crowd out

mundane thoughts.

4. Relax

As you breathe, consciously relax each part of the body, from the toes to your

crown. It’s amazing the amount of stress we hold in our body. Focusing on both

your breathing and your body will crowd out mundane thoughts.

openIng WIndoWs to oxygenateWhat happens in your home when it’s all sealed with insulation and vapor barriers?

It can’t breathe! When inside air isn’t exchanged for outside air, it becomes stale and

pollutants build up. You need not have an elaborate home ventilation system installed

to enjoy fresh air. You already have one—your windows!

More often than not, homes are full of dust, allergens, mold, bacteria, viruses, volatile

organic compounds, and more. You can avoid these air quality destroyers simply by

exchanging the air in your home. Also, as you continually breathe stale air, the oxygen

content decreases. You may end up breathing in the toxins and carbon dioxide that

you previously exhaled. Carbon dioxide increases bone loss, which is why opening

windows is listed as one of the “Take Action!” steps in the Save Our Bones Program.

So before you begin your cleanse, give your house a cleanse. Be sure that all filters in

the heating and cooling systems have been changed. Also, and especially if you live in

an older home, having your ductwork cleaned periodically ensures that allergens and

molds aren’t accumulating here and being circulated throughout the home. No less

important is adding some plants to your home (see my article at http://saveourbones.

com/houseplants-to-prevent-bone-loss), which will decrease toxins that have a

negative effect on bone and general health. If you can’t do them all, try to at least

change your filters and add some plants.

sleep at least 8 hours a daySleep is also important for renewal of the body and mind. If you don’t get enough, it

reflects in your mood, motor skills, concentration, and even shows on your face, thanks

to dark circles under the eyes. But did you know that a lack of sleep also inhibits your

immune system, nervous system, and disrupts your body’s hormone-release schedule?

While you sleep, your body is still busy at work and has more time to repair cell damage.

According to the Harvard Women’s Health Watch, lack of sleep negatively impacts

learning and memory, metabolism and weight, safety, mood, cardiovascular health, and

immunity. 4

Do you need help sleeping? Create a routine of relaxing activities before bed; no heavy

exercising after dinner, a light snack is good, and no TV or distractions in the bedroom. A

dark, cool, and quiet (white noise and soft music are okay) bedroom is best. This is a great

time to open a window!

breathing in a meditative environment for at least 10 minutes twice a day and try to

step 5: cleanse By aVoIdIngOne of the simplest ways to ensure vibrant health is to avoid

what could harm it. Every day, people make decisions to avoid

things that are dangerous or pose a health hazard, whether

it is a friend who has a cold or leftovers that have been in the

refrigerator too long. Yet, on a daily basis, the same people

unnecessarily expose themselves to hundreds of toxins that

upset the delicate internal balance of the body without a

second thought.

Why? For one thing, most people don’t know that their diet is harming them. Health-

conscious people that follow conventional dietary mantras typically load up on low-

fat dairy, lean meats and whole grains, along with low-calorie processed foods and

artificially sweetened drinks. They mistakenly believe that these foods are essential for

a well-balanced diet. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that it is not balanced.

Quite the opposite, as these foods wreak havoc on the system by creating an acidic

environment that the body must constantly work to neutralize.

Eating is not the only way we bog down our detox system. We also breathe in toxins,

as well as absorb them through the skin. It is just as important to be aware of the toxic

dangers presented to us in the form of health and beauty products and household

cleaners.

During the cleanse, be especially mindful of avoiding harmful chemicals and food

groups that may compromise your natural filtration system, which are your body’s

detox organs.

your natural fIltersThe kidneys and liver are underappreciated organs that do an amazing amount of

work. The liver is responsible for detoxifying whatever enters your body, whether you

eat it, breathe it, or absorb it through the skin. It produces essential body chemicals

and proteins, including albumin, which helps retain calcium in the blood. The more

toxins that the body is exposed to, the harder the liver must work. When your liver no

longer works effectively, the kidneys try to pick up the slack.

As you know from the Save Our Bones Program, one of the kidneys’ primary functions

is to keep the body’s pH in balance. The kidneys play a role in bone health by

producing hormones that stimulate bone marrow and maintain calcium levels. They

also remove waste from the body, regulate blood pressure and composition, and

stimulate the production of red blood cells.

In addition to following so-called “healthy” diets that acidify the body, create

inflammation, contain hundreds of toxins, and prevent the absorption of nutrients,

most osteoporosis “patients” are prescribed drugs. These drugs have been shown

to affect both kidney and liver function. In fact, clinicians are advised to perform an

ongoing risk/benefit assessment because of the renal toxicity of the osteoporosis

drugs, especially the intravenous bisphosphonates.

So if you have been on an osteoporosis drug, the OsteoCleanse™ is especially

important to allow your body to cleanse and to naturally mend itself.

What to aVoId and WhyDuring OsteoCleanse™, it is important to avoid foods and chemicals that place a

burden on the liver and kidneys and are detrimental to bone and general health. Just

as you are engaging in activities and consuming nutrients that support kidney and liver

function during this time, you will be avoiding those that do not.

aVoId daIryIt never ceases to amaze me how conventional wisdom wrongly places so much value

on dairy products. The proteins in dairy lead to inflammation and, like other animal

proteins, cause calcium excretion through the kidneys. As you discovered in the Save

Our Bones Program, the body draws on its calcium stores to neutralize the acidic state

that milk—and most of its derivatives —creates within the body.

Even though unsweetened, fermented dairy is considered pH neutral (plain yogurt,

sour cream, etc.), please avoid it completely for the week. Food derived from animals,

dairy included, is protein rich. When animal protein is consumed in vast quantities, as

is standard in a Western diet, the liver is heavily taxed with breaking those proteins down.

Adding insult to injury, too much animal protein strains the kidneys due to high nitrogen

content. This is why people with kidney disease are told to reduce the amount of protein

in their diet.

Additionally, almost all dairy, unless organic, has measurable quantities of herbicides,

pesticides, antibiotics, and other undesirable impurities. These unwanted elements place

even more burden on your body’s natural detoxification system.

aVoId anImal proteInSome of the problems with animal proteins were addressed above, but there are more

reasons to avoid them during the OsteoCleanse™. Once digested, animal proteins form

uric acid, which attacks the kidneys and breaks down nephrons, the units in the kidneys

responsible for filtering toxins into the urinary system. Instead of being flushed out of the

body, uric acid can collect in the joints and crystallize, a painful condition known as gout.

Since animal proteins are acid forming, not to mention quite inflammatory, the kidneys are

taxed with neutralizing the pH. Another thing to consider, unless it is organic, is that you

are being exposed to toxic chemicals, heavy metals, environmental pollutants, and a range

of hormones and antibiotics in meat which also must be neutralized. No less worrisome is

that in many cases, cattle and other animals raised for food consume genetically modified

grains, such as corn and soybeans, instead of their natural diet.

aVoId alcohol During the cleanse, it is important to avoid alcohol, even a single glass of wine or beer.

Simply put, when you drink alcohol, your liver goes into overdrive. Alcohol is quickly

absorbed into the bloodstream and the liver contains the only cells in the body capable of

oxidizing it. Because the body treats alcohol as a poison, the liver is forced to metabolize

alcohol if it is in your system, no matter how little or how much. Alcohol literally becomes

the liver’s number one priority.

The end product of alcohol metabolism is acetaldehyde, which is more toxic than alcohol

itself. This substance, along with other byproducts and dehydration, causes a hangover.

In addition, the kidneys are also burdened by alcohol consumption. Not only is alcohol

a diuretic, it diminishes the kidney’s ability to regulate the ions of sodium, potassium,

magnesium, chloride, and phosphate. These minerals are essential, as they help the body

maintain its cellular water concentration and a stable pH balance.

aVoId coffee

That cup (or more than one!) of coffee in the morning may seem to lift you up, but

I can assure you that it is doing more harm than good. Caffeine, what many people

crave in coffee, can strain the liver and kidneys. Like alcohol, coffee is acidifying. And

caffeine is a diuretic; it deters water re-absorption by the kidneys’ nephrons, making

them overwork. When metabolized, caffeine forms a byproduct called caffeine

hydrochloride that causes the liver to increase bile so the body can quickly purge the

toxin. This is why some people think that coffee keeps them “regular.” So even if you

love coffee, don’t drink it during the cleanse.

aVoId chemIcalsChemicals are everywhere. Obviously, we can’t avoid them all. Making a few simple

changes at home can drastically reduce exposure to environmental toxins. After all,

the more chemicals and toxins that we avoid in everyday products, the easier it is for

our bodies to eliminate the toxins that we can’t avoid.

Skin Care

Read your shampoo and skin lotion labels. All of those chemicals absorb into your

skin. Especially for the cleanse, I am encouraging you to use fragrance and dye-free

organic shampoo and lotion. These will not contain sulphates, dioxane, ethoxylates,

PEGs, polysorbates, parabens, or other harmful and unnecessary ingredients. Be

careful and read labels. There are beauty products that make it to the organic and

natural beauty aisles that are filled with questionable ingredients.

Cleaning

Ironically, much of our home’s toxins come from the agents we use to clean it!

Ammonia, chlorine, and hundreds of synthetic chemicals are in conventional cleaning

products. Today, there are many safe products available at mass retailers. Look for

the words “nontoxic” and “biodegradable” on the package. Also, making cleaning

products is easy and cheap. For example, club soda is a good all purpose cleaner as

it is an even mixture of white vinegar and water. A simple internet search can provide

you with natural recipes for any cleaning need that you have.

Pesticides

If you use chemical pesticides and compounds in the garden, avoid gardening this

week. Twelve of the 26 most-used pesticides in the U.S. are classified as carcinogenic

by the U.S.A. Environmental Protection Agency. If you are really itching to garden,

it would be a fantastic time to try chemical-free and organic products. Or do some

good old fashion pruning and weeding. If you need to repel mosquitoes or other

biting insects, try a natural repellent, such as oil of citronella, which is available on

the mass market.

First, you will be eating organic fruits and vegetables that are typically higher in

nutrients and minerals than non-organic produce. Organic farmers rotate crops to

maintain soil nutrients. Conventional farming uses chemical fertilizers to encourage

plant growth, but it is done at the expense of soil nutrients.

In fact, after a thorough review of no less than 41 published studies comparing the

nutritional value of organically grown vs. conventionally grown fruits, vegetables, and

grains, the researcher concluded that organic crops were richer in quite a variety of

Vitamin C is a Save Our Bones Foundation Supplement, so you may already be reaping

C has a three-fold benefit that makes it valuable for a detox cleanse and vital to bone

health and general health.

I recommend the ascorbic acid form of vitamin C, since it is identical to the naturally

occurring vitamin in foods and it is efficiently absorbed during meals. However, if

you experience slight digestive discomfort with ascorbic acid, you can replace it

with calcium ascorbate, a buffered formula of this vitamin. All forms, such as powder,

chewable, or non-chewable tablets, are a good bioavailable source of vitamin C.

However, the bioavailability of ascorbic acid from time-release preparations is less

certain. 

Anti-inflammatory: Vitamin C is one of the best antidotes of the inflammation caused

by osteoporosis drugs. The journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine reported

in 2009 that for healthy, non-smoking adults with an elevated level of C-reactive

protein (a biomarker for inflammation), a daily dose of vitamin C lowered levels of the

biomarker after two months compared with those who took a placebo. 6

Bone builder: Vitamin C is crucial for the production of collagen, a protein that helps

build and maintain healthy bones and cartilage. A study in the Journal of Biological

Chemistry concludes that vitamin C promotes bone health by supporting cells that

are involved in bone remodeling. The study authors point out that vitamin C is

involved in osteoclast suppression and osteoblast development. 7 And according to

a 1997 study in the Journal Epidemiology and Community Health, long term use of

vitamin C supplements was associated with higher bone mineral density in the early

postmenopausal years. 8

Toxin destroyer: Vitamin C is absolutely essential to aid your body in the detoxifying

process because it is needed for the conversion of toxic chemicals and pollutants into

a water-soluble byproduct that the body is able to flush away. Supplementing with

vitamin C is also one of the most effective ways to protect your body from free radical

damage.

You may wonder why you need to supplement during a week in which you’ll be eating

so many foods that contain vitamin C. Eating up to nine or 10 servings of fruits and

the excess it can’t use.

Omega-3 Fish Oil, 1000 mg/day

Research supporting the positive role of the essential fatty acid omega-3 is mounting.

Omega-3s have been shown to support bone and joint health, benefit the eyes and

skin, maintain fluidity of cell membranes, improve the body’s ability to respond to

insulin, reduce triglycerides, and increase blood flow. Omega-3s helps sustain a healthy

immune system and cellular structure that supports the elimination of waste. This

super essential fatty acid has also been linked to an increased sense of well-being and

a decrease in moodiness and depression.

For bone health, omega-3 increases calcium absorption, helps reduce bone loss,

and maintains mineral density within bones. According to a 1997 study in the journal

Progress in Lipid Research, essential fatty acids “have now been shown to increase

calcium absorption from the gut, in part by enhancing the effects of vitamin D, to

reduce urinary excretion of calcium, to increase calcium deposition in bone and

improve bone strength and to enhance the synthesis of bone collagen”. 9 Plenty of

reasons to continue supplementing after the cleanse!

Omega-3 is an excellent anti-inflammatory. 10 It works by encouraging and

discouraging biochemical reactions in the body. The long chain omega-3 fatty acids

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic) found in fish oil block the

body’s anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, which turn off pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Another way that DHA and EPA work in this capacity is by blocking the inflammatory

effects of omega-6, an essential fatty acid prevalent in meat (especially corn-fed beef),

dairy, processed foods, and vegetable oils.

Over time, the human diet has transitioned from a healthy balance of omegas to

one that is heavy in omega-6 and deficient in omega-3. This deficiency allows the

inflammation caused by too much omega-6 to go unchecked. It also restricts bone

turnover. Omega-3s have been shown to prevent bone turnover when the consumption

reduces the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. 11 An ideal ratio

between the two is from 1:2 to 1:4 omega-3 to omega-6. The typical Western diet

usually has a ratio of 1:15 or higher!

EPA and DHA can be synthesized in the body from ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), another

omega-3 fatty acid. Unfortunately, synthesis and diet alone do not provide us with

enough. When choosing a supplement, look for natural forms of DHA and EPA-

containing fish oil that has been purified by molecular distillation to remove harmful

toxins.

While flax seed oil is rich in ALA, fish oils are a direct source of DHA and EPA. You

can also take a supplement with all three: ALA, DHA, and EPA. In all cases, take a

supplement with a total of 1000 mg of fish oils. Any amount of ALA under 1000 mg

is acceptable. For the most effective absorption, take the omega-3 supplement with

food. A word of caution: omega-3 fatty acids may increase fasting blood sugar levels,

so if you’re diabetic, check with your doctor. Also, consult with your doctor if you are

currently taking blood thinners, including aspirin, because fish oil is a natural blood

thinner.

conclusIonAt the beginning of my osteoporosis journey, I was afraid. I knew

that osteoporosis was an uncommon condition — it’s what I had

learned as a Nutritionist years before it was neatly packaged

and marketed as a “disease”. I had many questions; how would
