BENEFITS OF GOOD BAG HYGIENE

• Increases the likelihood that bags will make fl ights.

• Less time lost to reset the system and clear jams.

• Enhances the ability to track bags through the system.

• Bags are less likely to roll or tumble through the system.

BAG TAG AWARENESS/MAINTENANCE

• Accurate baggage sortation is based on the system’s ability to read the barcode.

• Printer maintenance and quality tags are a must; tag printers must be cleaned at the beginning of every shift to ensure barcodes are printed properly.

• The image below (left ) is an example of a poorly printed bag tag.

• Airlines must use printed tags for sortation.

• Tags cannot be handwritt en (right) as they will not sort without a barcode.

• Airlines should not print duplicate bag tags for passengers with multiple bags.

5

Page 10: NOTICE OF ADDENDUM ADDENDUM #2 Subject ......NOTICE OF ADDENDUM ADDENDUM #2 02/21/2020 Subject: Solicitation: In-Line Baggage Handling System (BHS) Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and

• Barcodes from dirty or misaligned print heads are oft en unreadable.

• Barcodes must be visible to track and sort the bag.

• Placement of stickers aff ect how the bag is sorted in the baggage handling system.

• The sticker in the picture below (left ) makes the tag unreadable by the barcode.

• Barcodes should be clearly visible when the bag is placed on the belt.

• Customers sometimes place ribbon, yarn, etc. on a handle to help identify their bag; these aff ect the system’s ability to read the barcode.

• If there is another handle on the bag without “decorations,” affi x the tag on it to ensure proper sortation.

• Do not tuck the bag tags under the baggage handles. That will prevent the tag from being read.

• Check all sides of the bag, and remove any old bag tags or barcode stickers before you put the bag into the system.

• The picture below is an example of poor tag alignment.

• Oversized/undersized bags are non-conveyable items that will not fi t into a tub and cannot go through the baggage handling system.

• Oversized/undersized bags and animal cages will be carted to the oversized screening area to be screened by TSA.

• Golf bags less than 54 inches tall are OK in the baggage handling system unless they do not have a stable conveyable surface or are not fully enclosed (like in this photo).

• Always place bag wheels up and handles trailing to prevent the bag from rolling up or down inclines.

• The images on the right show a bag jam. The string from the duffl e bag got caught in the merge, causing the jam. This bag should have been placed in a tub.

BAGGAGE PLACEMENTUSING A TUB:

• Only place one bag/one item into each tub.

• If possible, place odd-shaped items into a tub.

• Car seats are to be double tubbed, and the car seat should be placed with its back facing up.

• Items that weigh 15 pounds and under must be double tubbed.

• Make sure the bag tag is on top and visible; do not place the bag tag on the underside of a bag when placing it in a tub.

• Hard-shell rounded suitcases should always be placed in a tub.

• Soft -sided bags such as duff els and garment bags should be placed into tubs. Make sure that the item is completely in the tub and has as low a profi le as possible.

• Overstuff ed bags will roll. Place them into a tub if they will fi t.

• If you’re not sure whether or not to use a tub, use a tub.
