    A Message from Kandee G

This issue of Nothing But Good NewsMagazine and the theme from many of ourcontributors comes from an old Apple ad campaignurging us all to think differently. One of my favoritequotes:Heres to the crazy ones. The misfits. Therebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.Theyre not fond of rules. And they have no respectfor the status quo. You can quote them, disagreewith them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thingyou cant do is ignore them. Because they changethings. They push the human race forward. Andwhile some may see them as the crazy ones, wesee genius. Because the people who are crazyenough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.In this issue you will find that it is practical to be crazy, how being a rebel can increase your happiness and what to do when you dont fit in. Whistle as you work and just listen to those voices in your head! I am ecstatic to share one of my all time favorite restaurants and a new twist on an old favorite sandwich from a great new chef. Like always, this issue is packed with great ideas, inspiration, hope and ways to help you on your path.My goal with this issue is to give you the inspiration to awaken to your lifes journey, and if you feel you are already have, then to give you the courage to keep going. Make your journey the most amazing ever.A huge thanks to all of our contributors, advertisers and especially YOU, the reader. So theres this guy I know who just LOVES to whistle.

My son shared with me the other day, Dad, if theres one thing I know its that you LOVE to whistle We smiled at each other, recognizing a no-brainer when we hear one, from this 14 year old wunderkind. (By the way, Im proud to say, my son is a pretty talented whistler, too!). The whistle doesnt fall far from the tree, as they say (whos they anyway?). But I digress.

I whistle all the time. Its simply automatic. Its my subconscious joy. What the heck? I whistle in the shower (who doesnt?), I whistle in public places (great acoustics get my whistles flowing). Theres a couple of magic spots that Ill share with you that resonate truly pure whistling magic. The joy of whistling as it twermakes me so happy (and maybe some others in hear shot).

New Yorkers! Seek out Grand Central

Station, upper level, and whistle your brains out there in anonymityI mean the sound is just heavenly (if you can carry a tune, of course). Are you getting this TripAdvisor?

In San Francisco, theres this amazing place called the Palace of Fine Arts, erected in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, the Worlds Fair of its day. It stands out at the base of the Golden Gate bridge on-ramp. Located outside, this monolithic icon, must be, I dont know, 300 feet tall? Its a beautiful rotunda, a tribute to Greek and Roman architecture. Anyhoo, the sound, the echo, the pure vibrations are uncanny. You must get there if for no other reason than to hear the acoustics for yourself!

So why share this tidbit with you at this time? Well, it seems that whistling is getting more mainstream. (Finally!!) Why just last week, Time Magazine referenced whistling amongst Jobs that are (almost) too good to be true. Music to my ears, whistling was one of the five jobs listedso watch out, we whistlers are warbling out of our shells.

Youll come to find, that I have a distinction relating to whistling. You see, I had a vision of becoming a world wide whistler. I did so in the Bay Area, living in Berkeley, CA. More than anything, my passion to melodically whistle led me to the Guinness Book of World Records headquarters in merry ol England. I took my investigation seriously, I mean, this was going to be an inaugural record, for whistling out loud! What whistle records currently existed?, and How can I establish a new world record?, I queried.

Turns out, no records existed for whistling endurance. So I had an idea and a plan of action: Whistle AS my

work, longer than any human being in recorded history! What drives a man, you ask, to even WANT to attempt this amazing feat? Passion plays a part, global domination, perhaps. Whistling a happy tune almost always puts a smile on your face. So, in good fun, and good taste and using a lot of hot air, I went for it. Little known trivia in the world of fringe performancethis author succeeded in his quest. Yup! David Harpo Hall whistled for over 24 hours, non-stop, as documented by the Guinness Book of World Records on April Fools Day,1983. The record, as far as I can tell, still stands to this day. Upon establishing the record, I called my mom in New York, to proclaim, shes now Whistlers Mother, ref: James McNeill Whistlers classic, Oil on Canvas of the same name, 1871. No such title for Whistlers Father!.

Yes, I made my indelible mark on history, with a talent that I am truly proud to say is available to us all. With tongue, teeth and desire, whistling may be the essence of the universal language of music! (It is THAT significant!!). By the

The youngest of four, David was clamoring for attention at an early age.Maturing to class clown in his hometown of Mt. Vernon, NY, David studied tech theatre at SUNY Binghamton, all the while looking to travel abroad. He worked at Empire Airlines at JFK, before moving out west to the hills of Berkeley, CA. It is there where he discovered his love of whistling, hitchhiking, nature walks amongst the redwoods and otherwise finding himself.

Today, David is a proud parent of his Unity School graduate, Jaxson Hall. Single and fun-loving, David divides his time as owner of The Hall Way, a consulting with a conscience marketing firm, with whistling, frisbee, world travel, photography and lots of massage.

The crazy ones, the misfits and the rebels, they break through societies limits. These are the SuperWomen. The women who set boundaries, say No and do more for themselves than for anyone else. The craziest part about them, they have no guilt as they engage in these activities. They change things, like their life fulfillment and overall happiness. And while the Joness see them as crazy, they are managing their families, jobs and selves better than anyone we know. This is a SuperWoman.

As I coach and educate women on work-life balance, I have yet to have a woman put herself on her list of top life roles. Society has had this great way of pushing women into certain roles and into thinking certain things. Initially, when we first play wife and then quickly play mom and professional guru, we are excited and genuinely open to giving to others again and again. But quickly, the game of Giving gets boring. When a woman goes to change up the game by adding some excitement, either society makes her feel guilty or she makes herself feel guilty for doing so.

The patterns of thought about giving become so ingrained in our minds, that doing things for ourselves seem both out of place and downright rude. Should you really be hitting that gym after work when you havent seen the kids in the past 9 hours? Thats guilt talking. But, if you want to make a difference, you have to break the rule, go to the gym anyway.

I have children, I have a husband, I have a job, and the only reason my family is happy is because even on the longest days, I hit the gym. Because I do things for me, I am happier, more fulfilled and more excited about life. This attitude rubs off positively on my family. Indirectly, I am also modeling work-life balance behaviors for my young children and also indirectly letting my husband know it is okay if he needs time to find healthy fulfillment, too.

I guess the million dollar question is, How in the world can I find time

for me when every minute of my day is packed? I am here to tell you that every minute of your day is not packed. I am busy too, I get it. But there is a difference between being busy and being productive. Talking to negative Nancy in the office about how much she hates her job, wastes your valuable time.

How many days have you stayed late at work because you just had so much to do? Think about some of the activities you didnt need to do at work that could have helped you to focus better so you could have gotten out on time.

How many minutes were you on social media today? Was it more than 10? If so, you could have downloaded an app on your phone and done a 10 minute cardio or toning video. How many times did you say yes to taking on an extra role you knew from the start you should have said No to?

All these extra roles take away the potential for time you could use to focus on you. When you say No to taking on roles you dont want, the payoff is in the end. Keep the end result in mind. Think before saying yes to someone about taking on an extra life role. Retreat, Rethink and then React when making decisions.

Also, when you are with the people who mean the most to you in life, give them your attention. If you are playing with the kiddos, understand that 4 hours of time with them while you are multitasking is equivalent to 20-30 minutes with no cell phone or computer near you as you sit on the floor playing princess or trains. You might feel like you are wasting time but this is actually giving them the best of your time because they see it as valuable. Because of this, they will be more accepting of time you give to

    Featureyourself.

Same goes for your spouse. If you finally get that date night, dont spend it talking about the kids and work. If you have no clue what to talk about, reminisce about the good old days, play the what if game or just create something to spark intimacy between you two, because that is ultimately why you wanted date night in the first place.

For the next week, be a misfit and a rebel. Let the Joness think you are crazy.

This week select one of the following:1. Say No to one request that you dont want to take on.

    2. Do, and then check something off the bucket list.

    3. If you dont exercise, this week workout 2 times for 20 minutes.

    4. Dont gossip or listen to gossip all week.

    5. Be productive versus busy (focus on your moment to moment routine for this).

    6. Schedule a date night with your spouse; dont talk about work or family.

Take it down a notch and try to fit in. I cried when I said these words because in my heart I felt like a traitor to his spirit.

Yes, there are round people who place themselves in round holes, abide by the norms, zip it when they are told to and would rather not stir things up. Just the other day, I was having breakfast with an older lady friend. I know she loves rye bread with her poached eggs but when a bagel was served on the plate, rather than ask for what she wanted, she remained silent and ate what was given. This scenario is simple but important.

You see, I have been living like a bull in a china shop; headstrong, running after the Holy Grail, forging my own way and racing forward against time. Yes, I may be motivated by deep inner forces but sometimes, when I leave track marks in the dirt and others may be hurt, I am compelled to pause.

Is there a Continuum of Crazy?By Liz Sterling

just told me I was OK the way I was. I felt the wild, free-spirited, creative hunger that longed for new ideas and dreamed of being liberated from the old trajectory of a dying paradigm being born. I celebrated the possibilities of forging ahead. I embraced being crazy, and added a bonus to the mix by thinking I could do things my way and knew what was right.

I think we all secretly desire to be in the cadre of the crazy ones who throw aside societal norms and allow our souls to become our guide. Unbridled and carefree, yes, yes, yes, thats how I longed to be. But society has a way of conditioning our boldness and structuring our thinking.

I remember the day I was torn in two. I had to tell my son to fit in. Andrew, I said, This is the hardest thing I will ever have to do. Your zest for life is great and I love it but its too much for others. Your energy is disruptive and you will have to conform to society.

Life is an adventure and I tend to make up my own rules; yet Ive noticed that blind faith, shooting from the hip and gut instinct work really well with being peaceful and balanced. Sometimes it feels like there is a big plan of which I am a little part but other times, no plan and I wait inside the proverbial question mark.

Whats it like for you? Do you ever feel that life is a great mystery where the corner pieces of the puzzle, once put in place, morph, and the ideology that was once a cushion becomes an anchor.

Years ago, I was at a Sunday Service and heard a sermon. Dont settle for being NORMAL, the speaker elucidated. Go be one of the crazy ones. Live your passion, break new ground, and dont try to make others happy by surrendering your innovative self. Go forth boldly and be proud of your uniqueness. I was on my feet! Clapping and rejoicing. Someone had

So the question I ask myself today is where on this continuum of crazy do I want to be? How much do I need to be heard, have my way, get what I think I deserve, make might right? Maybe the lesson I taught my son isnt so bad. Maybe there is a middle ground.

Spiritual teacher and mentor, Ram Dass comes to mind and many of my other teachers who suggest we learn to moderate our ego, tame the personality and monitor ones propensity to run the show and be in control. I may have overstepped my boundaries when I was given permission to call myself a crazy one and included making my own rules. Dennis Boulud, chef and restaurateur, said it best, Your ambition drives your obsession and your obsession drives your ambition.

Many people, myself included, tend to associate obsession with craziness, usually in a good way. However, there are others that believe obsession is something negative. Unless obsession is causing harm to others, I believe its a wonderful thing that has the ability to harness our focus and actually lead to amazing things. Obsessions are responsible for so much human greatness and accomplishment throughout history. There are countless men and women who have revolutionized and changed the world for the better.

There were many people in my life that felt that writing my book, Contagious Optimism, for all those years, and consistently trying to build the brand, was crazy. They could not grasp the fact that I would take the risk of not having an income and, instead, spend so much time on something that may never go anywhere. Many referred to me as being an obsessed entrepreneur or a lone nut trying to create a movement. I have always taken extreme risk since I was young and clearly that trait has not subsided. However, when I stumbled on my passion for capturing real stories from real people, and sharing them with others through various outlets, there was no turning back. Time seemed to alter its state and my determination to make this project successful became front and center. Stopping the process almost seemed impossible based on the path I was on. I dont think this is an uncommon feeling based on what I have learned from famous inventors, industrialists, and athletes.

In the process of connecting with people on a global scale and hearing their stories, I learned a great deal about the elements of success. I learned that most people are naturally resilient even when facing extreme obstacles and adversity. I learned that perseverance, when combined with obsession and optimism, will always lead to a favorable outcome as long as you stay the course. And, last, I learned that when people are going through tough times, they tend to think theyre alone. However, when they hear stories of how others have persevered, it gives them hope. The compounding effect of these stories, and the importance of continuing to capture them in order to help others, is my obsession and something I wholeheartedly believe can make the world a better place.

So many people refer to Apple today as revolutionary because of their popular products of the last few years. However, do you recall their highly unique ad campaign back in 1997? It states, Heres To The Crazy Ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes; the ones who see things differently. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world - are the ones who DO!

This campaign was risky but that didnt stop them. They were confident in their mission and were optimistic they would be successful. This campaign isolated the social norm and gave the impression that it only appealed to a small demographic. However, it was actually brilliant in nature because everyone, in essence, wants to impact the world in some way. Even the most

passive person would like to know that their footprint will make an impression somewhere and leave a legacy. Because of that, this ad appealed to more people than one would imagine.

More importantly, the Apple ad was true. It is the crazy ones who launch revolutionary ideas that lead to change in the world. It is their passion and obsession that keeps them on the path of perseverance. They see no obstacles because, in their determination, there are no obstacles!

My story is a unique account of how becoming a parent can positively affect your work life.

Just over a year ago, my life was focused on my career. I was juggling my position as a flight attendant while planning two large events, TEDxBocaRaton and Contagious Optimism LIVE. I was a single woman who had become an expert at multitasking and was able to spend all hours of the day working. It was in the middle of one of my busiest weeks when I got the phone call that changed my life. A five-day old girl needed a foster home. I was recently certified to foster a child and the call came quicker than I had ever expected. All I had was a crib, so to say I was not prepared was an understatement. I had one hour to go to the hospital to pick her up and a full schedule of meetings and a pile of work on my desk. I had become a working, single mother in anhour.

Becoming a mother had an incredible impact on my career. Suddenly, I had a desire to be more successful and a motivation to take my career more seriously. I wanted to be a good role model. It became critical to me to show the baby that I have a career that I love. But how was I going to be a great parent and continue with my busy work schedule?

Caring for a child became my most important job. This new priority taught me how to work smarter. The flexibility in my positions became more important than ever. Now instead of working all day into the late hours of the night, I was forced to create a schedule that worked around the babys schedule. This put structure in my working life. This made me a planner. Working smarter, planning and prioritizing are key habits that helped make me a successful parent and successful in my career.

Looking after the baby taught me to take care of my health. I began feeding the baby organic fruits and vegetables as part of a well-balanced diet. One day, I realized I was eating junk and feeding her a nutritious diet. I had to rethink my own eating habits. Once I changed my diet, I had a healthier mind, body and spirit, which made me a better mother and a better worker.

As a new mother, I received some of the best advice I had ever heard: When youget overloaded and dont know what to do STOP regroup and start fresh the next day. When I feel stressed and overwhelmed in my jobs, I stop for the day. I use the rest of the day to spend with the baby, relax and clear my mind. When I start again the next morning, I am more productive. This advice has made me a more constructive worker and a calmer parent. Being a working mother can be

overwhelming, but your role as a parent can help you be a more successful worker.

    - Be a planner: Create a schedule that works with your childs schedule. Example: I work 5 hours during the day while the baby is at daycare and 3 hours at night after she goes to sleep. I have a rule to stop working when she gets home from daycare and spend time with her. I plan my meetings around my babys schedule and appointments. I plan my weeks because it is essential to me to set aside time everyday to be with my child.

    - Work Smarter: Prioritize your to-do list. Moms only have a certain number of hours each day for work. Start by getting things accomplished that are time-sensitive. Keep in mind you are human, you can only do so much everyday.

    - Be healthy: Having a healthy child is extremely important, but your health is just as valuable. Having a nutritious diet will make you feel better in all parts of your life. You and your child can be healthy, happy and feel good.

    - Do not get overloaded: When you feel overwhelmed, it is important to stop working, unwind and start new the next day. You do not want to burn yourself out. Working too much can have a counterproductive effect on your work. Stepping away will lower your stress, which is good for your child, and will help you be more productive.

Becoming a foster parent has been a rewarding experience in itself. I am hoping to adopt my child and become her forever mother. However, I never expected what a positive effect being a parent would have on my career. I learned so much from my foster child; I hope the few things I have shared will help other mothers in their own lives.

ArticleFeAtureWe Speak Ourselves Into The WorldBy Chalmers Brothers

We speak ourselves into the world. We speak ourselves into transformation, or not. We speak ourselves into new possibilities and new results in our lives, or not. And we are all doing this, whether were aware of it or not.

For the past 20+ years, my life has been devoted to sharing a profoundly powerful understanding: Language is far more than a tool for communication or a way of describing how things are. Instead, language creates and generates.

With our language (internal and external conversations) we are doing a great deal more than communicating or describing. This is so close we often miss it. But noticing this is the necessary first step in any process of meaningful change or

    improvement.

The simple act of saying yes or saying no moves us in the world one way or another some doors opening, some doors closing. Were not describing here at all. If we agree to have lunch tomorrow at noon, we just invented a tomorrow that 5 seconds ago was not going to happen! Were not describing, were making something happen.

How do we go from being not married to being married? Somebody says something, of course! And its meaningfully different being married than not being married. We speak ourselves into the world, and its not trivial.

The United States of America was declared into being. Thats what the Declaration of Independence is all about. Now there was work to do after that, certainly. But without the Declaration, this country does not exist.

Companies of all sizes and shapes are declared into being, as well. Check out the articles of incorporation and virtually all will include the phrase hereby declare and as of a given date, the company exists.

The ability to say (or think) I dont know doesnt describe a state of affairs. It produces something: a context for learning. Not physical, but very real. Regardless of subject matter, saying or thinking I dont know is a powerful pre-requisite for learning. Think about it. How much learning takes place in a teaching situation when the learner thinks they already know it? Zero.

Im not claiming we dont describe with our language. What Im saying is, thats not all that we do. And its this whole other not all that we do thats worth paying attention to.

A second key to this way of understanding is this: We live in language. All of us, no exceptions. Its the little voice inside. One of my favorite quotes is from Mark Twain. He said: Im always in conversation, and sometimes other people are

    Article

nvolved! Its not just Mark Twain, its all of us.

We are all confronted with events at home, events at work, with our kids, our clients, our customers, when were alone, when were in a crowd events, events, events. And then: 1) We make up stories about these events 2) We hold our stories to be The Truth, and 3) We forget that we made them up! And by stories I dont mean fibs or fabrications, purposeful manipulations or self-deceptions. These are interpretations. Theyre explanations.

A crucial distinction for all of us interested in purposefully designing our lives is: Event is not equal to Explanation.

Example: Your child comes home and announces Im stupid because he got an F on a test. Whats the Event?

The F on the test. Whats the explanation? Im stupid. Question: If this child lives in this conversation long enough, is this a descriptive thing or a creative thing? Its a creative thing.

Next question: Is it the Events of your life, or your Explanations about those Events, that are more influential as to the actual actions you end up taking in the world? Its your Explanations. And out of the actual actions you take in the world, you produce Results in a wide variety of areas. And our Explanations are the springboard, not the Events. Out of any given Event, how many possible Explanations are there? Infinite.

Are your Explanations powerful or un-powerful given the Results you say you want? This is the fundamental question to ask.

We are each swimming in an ocean of stories, explanations and beliefs all of which live in language, and most of which we have long since forgotten that we authored. Some of these absolutely do not take us today and will not take us tomorrow where we say we want to go. But because we have forgotten that we are the author, we have also forgotten that we have the authority to change them, update them or let them go.

What are you seeking most to be, do or have in your life? Because however you answer these questions, its my intention to remind you and help you remember that we speak ourselves into the world.

Chalmers Brothers is the author of the best-selling book Language and the Pursuit of Happiness: A New Foundation for Designing Your Life, Your Relationships and Your Results. A veteran seminar leader and certified executive coach, he speaks and provides training internationally to CEOs, leadership teams, employees and individuals.

The simple act of saying yes or saying no moves us in the worldone way or another some doors opening, some doors closing.

Just Because I Hear Voices in My Head Doesnt Mean Im CrazyBy Pascal Depuhl

    ArtiCle

Youre crazy. Youre going to die.Youre out of your mind.

Thats the normal response Im getting from my friends, when I tell them about my plans to go to Afghanistan. Its almost unanimous. Everybody agrees that Im crazy for even considering this idea.

Before you stop reading, because you also think Im nuts - let me back up 6 months and tell you a little bit about myself: Its the summer of 2011. At this point Ive been a professional photographer for almost 20 years, but only started making little video projects for my clients earlier that year, when a little voice pops into my head: You should go to Afghanistan and make a movie for a humanitarian flight service. Where did that come from?

I believe that we are born with natural abilities, God given gifts. Things we can just do, without going to school for them, without buying them, without forcing ourselves to learn. They come naturally to us - we all have them. I also believe that because these are gifts,

we are required to give back and use these abilities to help others. OK. Back to the little voice telling me I should go

It triggers the only rational reaction, that I can think of: I must be crazy - its too and then for the next month and a half I come up with every excuse, why I shouldnt go: too dangerous, too complicated, too inexperienced, too unneeded, but that little voice in my head is not quitting. Its trying to get me to see this vision.

Finally I write an email that reads: I have this crazy idea fully expecting an answer that reads too dangerous, too complicated, too inexperienced, too unneeded, but what I get in return (2 weeks later) is an invitation to come to Kabul and create a short film about their humanitarian work in Afghanistan.

Well, but just an idea and an invitation is a far cry from doing anything. Over the next few months as were planning, preparing and producing all the details that go into filming a documentary film, half way around the world, in some of the worst environments you can image, I feel a passion growing for this project. Im getting really excited and tell my friends about this dream I have to go. Which gets us right back to:

Youre crazy. Youre going to die.Youre out of your mind.

How do you act, when everybody around you says your attempting the impossible? Even if you have a vision and a passion to go after that unreachable goal you need one more ingredient. Action. The Afghans say

Your inspiration is in heaven, but your brains are in your feet. In other words get your head out of the clouds, get off your butt and get going. Do impossible odds inspire you? Do you go after the crazy idea? Are you listening to that still small voice inside your head thats trying to show you a glimpse at an unreal(-ized) vision?

Or is your life so loud, so crazy, so insane that you cant hear the whispers of greatness, that are coming from out of your mind?

Pascal Depuhl is a still photographer and visual story teller. He loves it, when his clients see his films and photographs inspire their own customers to change. Pascal production company, Photography by Depuhl [http://www.depuhl.com], is based in Miami, but his work takes him all over the world. Heres to the crazy ones To my mind, and I suspect the minds of many others, this phrase conjures up images of rapt admiration and congratulations to those who dare to go beyond the standard, to do wild and wonderful things beyond the pale of expectations. It honors the non-conformists, the ones who have the imagination and foresight to see beyond the normal of what is to a totally different arena of what could be. And, make no mistake, these wild and wonderful people are sorely needed in a world of routine and day-to-day systems that value regularity and adherence to norms. They virtually define the term progress.

The crazy ones are often identified as visionaries and transformational leaders, people out in front of, or actually setting, trends and expectations. They are not bound by convention, nor do they have a high regard for the bonds that many of us observe as a normal part of acceptable behavior. As a consequence, they are often viewed as heroes and rewarded accordingly... or they fail miserably and are cast aside to be rapidly scorned and then forgotten.

This difference between unparalleled success and ignominious failure is the bailiwick of the ordinary mortals among us the people who may not be inspired, but who nonetheless get the job done. While the crazy ones may set the distant objective and

even chart a general path as to how to get there, it is up to the managers and administrators to actually make it happen. These roles are not nearly as glamorous, but essential nonetheless. These are the people in the trenches of evolution, the ones who know how the system works, what resources are available, and how to get things done. They are the unsung heroes of the growth, development, and advancement of crazy ideas that we term progress.

Any good leader is implicitly aware of this as very few innovations can be accomplished by oneself. Rather, it takes the proverbial village to bring forth a transformation, a village that works together toward a known objective. This is where the crazy one becomes a transformational leader a leader that inspires a focused change effort by appealing to workers sense of identification and self-esteem to achieve personal goals that are congruent with the overall organizational goal. This focused change effort contains a fundamental point to be recognized. Any good leader requires exceptional skills in the art and science of communication. This is where the complementary aspect of the genius so often associated with the crazy one comes into play. Very simply, the best of ideas will be doomed to failure with a lack of effective communication.

When you strip away the glitter and glamour of a new idea, a crazy thought, you come to the realization that it is easy to be crazy, but it requires a significant amount of planning, coordination, and hard work to be successful in the translation of that idea into a meaningful action or product. Perhaps that is why one of the key definitions of crazy is distracted with desire and excitement. Clearly, to move beyond the synonyms of absurd, bizarre,

fanciful, preposterous to the antonyms of clear, lucid, judicious, normal is a step of major proportions, requiring a great deal of faith and foresight. When you view it that way, you do, in fact, have to be crazy to even attempt it.

Therein lies the essence of a crazy one someone who has the imagination of a visionary and the work ethic to make it a part of our common, daily lives.

Every child has his or her favorite dish growing up, whether it is mac n cheese, pb & j or pizza. Today, many kids grow up eating fast food, prepackaged meals, and frozen dinners. When I was growing up; my mother made every meal from scratch. During the summer, mom would come home for her lunch break and make my favorite meal, a tuna melt. It meant so much to me. I would sit at the bar in our kitchen and ask about her day, then stuff my face before an adventurous afternoon on the town.

The precocious child I was, I often tried to emulate her ability to blend a few simple ingredients into a fantastic sandwich. My little experiments did not always end with great results, but they helped me become the chef I am now. Today, as one of the kitchen managers in a French inspired bistro and patisserie, my cooking has indefinitely become more refined.

Braising meats and creating luscious reductions of wines are but a part of my job now; no longer do I squander away on that simple sandwich in my mothers kitchen. Still, on some hot summer days, I always find my way back to making the only sandwich that mattered to me, that tuna melt. I make it not only for the fond memories, but as a simple meal that will satisfy anyone!

Yield: 2 Total time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:1 5-oz can of tuna in water2 tablespoons Dukes mayonnaise2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce1 egg, boiled, cooled, and roughly chopped 1 tablespoon dill pickle small diced1 tablespoon small-diced onion tsp black pepper tsp Creole spice (I use tony Chacheres)1 pinch of sugar

2 slices sharp cheddar (one per sandwich)4 slices 100 percent whole-grain bread2 tablespoons butter

Procedure: Leaving out the cheese, bread, and butter; mix all other ingredients in a small bowl and chill. Lie out your bread, and divide the tuna salad evenly between two slices. Top with cheese and the other slice of bread. While preparing the sandwiches, bring a skillet or saut pan to medium heat, and drop one tablespoon of butter into the pan per sandwich. Grill on each side for about two minutes or until golden brown. Finally, a nice thick slice of beefsteak tomato and crisp lettuce are a great addition. Cut in half, and enjoy a piece of my childhood!

ArticleAn Excerpt from Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag:A Transformational Guide for Living, Happy, Joyous and Free Inside the Medicine Bag: Tools for Awakening ConsciousnessBy Lee McCormick and Mary Falkner, co-authors of Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag

Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag is a guide for finding the way back to ones personal truth, authenticity and purpose by shedding the stories that we tell ourselves about or own lives. The book draws on Native American and shamanistic traditions, Eastern practices, universal spiritual pathways, and a medicine bag of other heart-opening methodologies developed by two seasoned experts, Lee McCormick and Mary Falkner. Readers are given the tools to step away from addictive, compulsive behaviors that hold them back, so they experience real happiness and joy as their spirit soars-- Living Happy, Joyous and Free!

The following exercises from the book are highly transformational. You will be awakening aspects of yourself that you have possibly been out of touch with for a long time. Work slowly and repeat exercises as needed.

Exercise 1--Exploring Your Hopes and Dreams

Your journey in consciousness begins by exploring your hopes and dreams. This is the first step in claiming your truth. To explore your hopes and dreams, consider these questions:* What do I long for?* What does it feel like?* What about life hooks my

imagination?* What does that feel like?* What would I do if I werent afraid?* What would fearlessness feel like?

Writing down your answers in your journal makes them more powerful. Sharing them with someone else makes them even more powerful. While transformation is personal, it happens best when we work together. Keep your list handy, as you will be referring back to it during these exercises and as you practice them in the future.

    Exercise 2--Dreaming the New Dream

Find a quiet place where you wont be interrupted for an hour or so. Get comfortable, relax, and allow yourself to get in touch with your deep hopes and dreams. You might begin with the question we often ask kids, What do you want to be when you grow up? If you have any trouble finding an answer, give the question more time. Put it on the back burner. There is no need to rush to find your answers. Your brain is wired for curiosity and creativity-it likes wondering, and it will find your answer. You dont have to know before you know.

Next, change the focus from your career goals to the type of person you want to be. What qualities or characteristics do you want to embody? For example, transformation encourages us to live from the heart, cultivate a positive mind, be of service, and live honestly. What values or characteristics would this require-for example, creativity, bravery, humor, cooperation, peace? In your journal, make a list and dont

worry about how you can develop these qualities. They are on the human hard drive; you just have to download them and live them. From the items on your list, pick the top three-the ones you most want to have in your life. Now select one, and imagine how it feels to have this quality.

Experience this quality emotionally, and breathe it in fully. Keep imagining your life with this quality until you can feel it physically. Notice where in your body the feeling resonates. Toxic beliefs that cloud your new vision begin to come to mind, giving you the opportunity to choose to invest in them further or let them go. Some will dissolve on their own. Others may require deeper investigation. This is you transforming into you.

    Exercise 3--Transforming Blocks

Taking the top quality you identified in the second part of Exercise 2, close your eyes, and breathe down into your belly. Speaking to wise mind (the intuitive part of you), ask what gets in the way of fully living the quality you have chosen to embody-for example, if you chose the quality creativity, ask, What is blocking me from experiencing my creativity? Sit quietly with that question while your deep memory searches the files. Did someone tell me I wasnt creative (or beautiful or handsome or wonderful . . . )? Did I believe it? Do I need to believe it now?

There may be more than one message or belief involved, but you dont have to locate every single thing thats part of the block. Often one or two toxic messages will unlock the whole mess.

This process is natural; allow it to happen rather than putting demands on yourself.

There may be more than one message or belief involved, but you dont have to locate every single thing thats part of the block. Often one or two toxic messages will unlock the whole mess. This process is natural; allow it to happen rather than putting demands on yourself.

    Exercise 4--Dreaming the Real You

Anything less than loving yourself indicates you are living a nightmare, not dreaming an awakened dream. This exercise will help you get out of the bad dream and into the one that was written on your heart by your creator.

Talk, write, and/or draw pictures about your transformed life and your ideal self until you feel the feelings of it and it begins to feel like its yours. Notice where in your body you feel these emotions, and breathe into those areas, grounding them in your body-giving them life. Practice consciously breathing into the feelings or the sense of your ideal self for several minutes each night as you are going to sleep and again when you first wake up. At those times and at intervals throughout the day, the brain naturally slows down into what are called alpha brainwaves-a highly creative and healing state of mind. During those intervals, energizing your dream is most effective.

As you imagine your ideal self and your transformed life, notice what blocks you from fully entering this new dream. Notice where your mind wants

to take you-for example, you might find it saying things like Wake up and get real; youre just daydreaming, Life isnt like that, and Yeah, right . . .

Write these blocks down or create a drawing or other piece of art that represents them. Often, there may be additional subconscious beliefs holding you back, such as I dont deserve . . ., I cant do . . ., Im just crazy; its useless . . ., If I change, it will mean I was wrong all these years . . ., and so on.

When you have identified the blocks and are ready to give them up, create a ceremony in which you will symbolize letting them go and allowing them to transform. Fire and water are traditional symbols of transformation.

Letting go of beliefs we have carried throughout life can be challenging, but it is totally possible. Its not unusual to repeat and repeat and repeat your efforts--each time reaching deeper into yourself. You are clearing patterns that have come down through your genetics for generations. Its like peeling the onion--one layer uncovers another and another and another. In cases of childhood trauma, the patterns are stored deep in the limbic system, and, in addition to your sincere intention and steadfast attention, healing them may require therapeutic assistance. The limbic system can be updated. You can heal. Dont give up before the miracle, and get more help if you need it. Lee McCormick and Mary Faulkner are the co-authors Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag; A Transformational Guide for Living, Happy, Joyous

and Free (HCI Books.) an essential and life-changing resource that is half autobiographical journey and half medicine bag filled with spiritual healing practices for those who are struggling with any aspect of life. Offering a way out of lifes maze, Spirit Recovery Medicine Bag is a guide for finding the way back to ones personal truth, authenticity and purpose by shedding the stories that we tell ourselves about or own lives. The book draws on Native American and shamanistic traditions, Eastern practices, universal spiritual pathways, and a medicine bag of other heart-opening methodologies developed by these two seasoned experts. ArticleAn excerpt from Thrown to the Wolves By Author Sissi Jane Symone

The next day it was as if nothing happened. That was in the beginning. I think the age difference had something, to do with her getting her way. She would always tell him you know you want some of this as she ran her fingers through his silky hair. Whatever this was, I never figured it. I never saw anything strange just heard a lot of moaning as if she was in pain.

The strangest thing she would yell, scream, and call him her Daddy. He was our Daddy but I guess she was so juiced up she thought he was hers. She was really confused poor Momma.

In the middle of the night in the other guest room upstairs, we would hear Daddy moaning and panting as if he was out of breath. Oh baby you know you want Daddy and she would in turn tell him to come to Momma. I guess she wanted her Daddy and he was so upset he wanted his Momma. I guess thats how they made up by calling on their Dad and Mom. The next day all was well.

My Daddy was about twenty years older than my Momma was. However after a while it didnt matter my Daddy stopped letting Momma get by with the coming in, and, making a scene.

I can remember one time she was full, as Daddy would say, Momma, and, Daddy got into it.

Damn you Aye I know you are running around on me! You need to get your drunken butt up and get in the bed. Im getting rea-a-l tired of you going off with those sisters of yours. You dont even invite me so whats up with that? You think I dont know what is going on. Shit, Im tired. I go to work and come home to this, he said.

Oh shut up Ray youre not the only one who works. I contribute t-too, with her words slurring. Daddy really didnt know what Momma went through to work
