stacks San Francisco’s Chinatown from 1895 through the earthquake and fire of 1906. Contains 130 of Genthe's finest Chinatown photos, complemented with Tchen's text outlining the turbulent history of Chinese-Americans in California. Mandeville, Vesta Avis

2002 Survival at Boiler Point Lake Tahoe.

Notes: Two copies, one @. "Survival at Boiler Point is the story of a brave family of seven: father, mother, four boys, and a baby girl, moving to a remote place on the shore of Lake Tahoe in 1914. The only communication with the outside world in the winter was by boat. The mail boat came once a week, if at all, due to high winds and stormy weather. The Mandeville family's survival depended on the good Lord and their own abilities, ingenuity, and good sense. This is a story of perseverance, hard work, and determination, but also much fun, on the shore of one of the world's most beautiful lakes.”

Reno, NV: Western Book/Journal Press Additional notes: Trade paperback, 271 pp., large format, with b&w illustrations throughout. Amazingly, this book also reproduces many pages of Sydney James Mandeville's correspondence and his fish and game logs which detail his work as a fish and game warden.

True, Charles Frederick, edited by Sally Ralston True

1966 Covered Wagon Pioneers stacks Sally Ralston True’s grandfather was one of the courageous Argonauts. As a boy in his teens, he was a covered wagon pioneer who crossed the Great Plains to California. When he was in his seventies, Charles Frederick True wrote this memoir of his 1859 trip over the California Trail at the age of sixteen. It was edited and published by his granddaughter Sally Ralston True in 1966 entitled Covered Wagon Pioneers. Charles True was observant and has a delightful sense of humor.

Truckee Meschery, Joanne 1981 In a High Place This charming novel of life in the small town high in the Sierra is really a novel about a town that is fictional version of Truckee, California, just below Donner Summit and the site of Donner Lake. The story of a developer wanting to turn the area into a major Disneyland-like ski resort and the resistance of the locals in the small timber and railroading town rings true in its depiction.

stacks Donated November 20, 2014 to TDHS by Ron Rettig. The businesses and many of the characters in the novel are actual or very closely modeled on real people inhabiting Truckee in the 1970s. Disney was an investor in Sugar Bowl in the 1940s.

stacks In 1872, Isabella Bird, daughter of a clergyman, set off alone to the Antipodes 'in search of health' and found she had embarked on a life of adventurous travel. In 1873, wearing Hawaiian riding dress, she rode her horse through the American Wild West, a terrain only newly opened to pioneer settlement. The letters that make up this volume were first published in 1879. They tell of magnificent, unspoiled landscapes and abundant wildlife, of encounters with rattlesnakes, wolves, pumas and grizzly bears, and her reactions to the volatile passions of the miners and pioneer settlers. A classic account of a truly astounding journey by a woman who did visit Truckee, CA in September 1873. Republished January 1, US & Western Blaisdell, Albert
