Dear Beach Middle School Family, Wow—it's amazing to think we are already a month into the school year. It has been a great start to our school year as we have welcomed the 6th graders to Beach and welcomed back our 7th and 8th graders. I have been impressed by the amount of family support for our students here at BMS. We had a wonderful turnout for all of our Open Houses. Also, our par- ent meetings, athletic and music events have had awesome attendance, for this I thank you. We have several new staff joining us this year. Our important new staff are: Colleen Bertoni—Spanish/ELS Caleb Coon—8B Science Elam Austin—Para Jeff Fitch—TC/8G Karen Paul—Para Corinna Rotondo—Para Nick Schumann—7G Math Korie Searles—Para Zach Snively—8G Math Claire Talarico—Psychologist Sarah Wiseman—Para Welcome to all. We are a stronger team because of them! Our monthly newsletter is hot off the press and I hope that you will find it informative about all aspects of the middle school experience. I wanted to highlight that we have two Parent-Teacher Conferences coming up in October: Wednesday, October 17, from 3:45- 7:00 PM and Thursday, October 25, also from 3:45-7:00 PM. Our conferences are “Round Robin” style-first come, first served. I strongly encourage you to attend. It is a great way to meet our outstanding teachers and support staff here at Beach and to gain a closer understand- ing into your child’s performance in class.. Wednesday, October 3, is our Student Count Day. It is very important for your child to be in school on this day. I appreciate your help on this important day. Remember, you can follow all the “happenings” at Beach Middle School on Twitter and Facebook both available on the BMS website. Finally, I want to emphasize my "open door policy" and encourage you to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns. welcomes you to the 2018-19

school year!

“Counselor’s Corner”

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. The Counseling Depart-ment staff this year are: Mara Good-man, our social worker, Claire Tal-arico, our school psychologist. Her time is shared between Beach and South Elementary. Mr. Strzyzewski is our full-time counselor in the build-ing and Mrs. Lombardo works part-time in the counseling office.

Our aim is to make school a positive experience for all students. We want every child to learn in a com-fortable and safe environment. We are here to help individuals with academic, emotional, and social issues. Please let your child know that they can ap-proach anyone in the counseling de-partment, and they will be fully sup-ported in whatever way possible.

Please call or email us with any questions or concerns.

BMS ATHLETICS

The athletic season at the middle school level is underway! The middle school football, volley-ball, cross country, and field hock-ey teams have all worked very hard in a short amount of time to begin game play. With that being said, we have begun our bi-weekly eligibility checks. Students must be passing 5 out of 6 classes in or-der to participate in game ac-tion. The academic policy is two D's equal one F, so if a student had 4 D's they would be deemed ineli-gible. As we always remind stu-dents...they are STUDENT-athletes (with the student coming first). Please help your child make sure they are taking care of busi-ness in the classroom. We are looking forward to watching all of our fall teams compete!

Parents, we need your help with running events this year. This includes taking tickets, working concessions, running the clock, etc. Please look for emails for sign-up opportunities! Have a great fall everyone!

Ten friendly reminders regarding afterschool

etiquette at the Beach Middle School bus transfer.

-Please remember to be patient and respect traffic flow i.e. not double parking or creating your own parking spot.

-Please do not load in the street-use the designated pick up points.

-Please do not drive around the backside of BMS through the bus staging area.

-Be cautious when entering the parking lot, many students are walking across it to meet their parents. Keep in mind the transfer site is for students K-12 in the Chelsea Schools.

-When picking up your students, please leave your dog(s) at home. We have many students with substantial allergies and this puts them at risk.

-If assistance is needed, please see one of the adults at the transfer. Do not call into the school offices which are very busy at the end of the day.

- Do not arrange for another adult to pick up your student unless it has been clearly communicated to them before-hand.

-Do not pick up your student(s) in the cemetery located behind the building- this should go without saying.

-Use common sense- inclement weather will mean more parents are picking up their student(s) afterschool so plan your time accordingly.

-There is no parking on the south side on Mayer Drive. You can park on the school side but not on the other side of the street.

Thank you for your support!

Beach Middle School will have Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 17, from 3:45-7:00 PM and Thursday, October 25, from 3:45-7:00 PM. No appointment is neces-sary. Our conferences are “Round Robin” style-first come, first served. Parents should enter at the front of the building by the school office. Information will be given to parents arriving for conferences by the office door area. All teachers are conferencing in either the cafeteria or gym. We suggest that a typical Parent/Teacher Conference should last approximately five minutes per teacher. If you need to hold a more in-depth conference, you should set up an appointment to do so other than these conference times. We enjoy joining with you to maximize your child’s education and look forward to meeting you at our conferences.

WORLD LANGUAGE CLUB

If you have a passion for learning about other cultures, you should join World Lan-guages Club. In the past we have experienced food, dancing, art, games, sports, and other cul-tural aspects of French and Spanish-speaking countries. Some highlights include field trips to the Detroit Institute of Art and a French restaurant in Ann Arbor. We meet twice a month, and our activities are driven by the students' cultural interests. Bring a friend and have fun! This is not a language class! Please look for more specific announcements in the next news-letter about the date of our first meeting in November.

LEADERSHIP CLASS

Leadership is an elective class where 8th graders focus on leadership skills and principles, including servant leadership. We do in-class activities, choose school-wide events, hear from guest speakers, participate in community service, and raise money for a worthy cause. We enjoyed coming up with the Spirit Week dress days and en-joyed seeing students show their school spirit. We are up and run-ning and excited for this quar-ter!

Leadership experienced a direction change this year to co-incide with our schedule change at Beach. With Mr. Angel's go ahead, the students brainstormed a list of potential things students would like at Beach itself. They came up with wonderful options and then asked all students to complete a survey of their wish-es. Our Beach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders chose a water bottle-filling drinking fountain! The Leadership students this quarter are excited to work to raise mon-ey for this "legacy" gift for all Beach students. We will be host-ing a school-wide Change Chal-lenge beginning the second week of October, where students bring change to fill their 5th hour teacher's box. The class with the most change wins a doughnut and cider party. We will also hold a bake sale October 17th--19th after school.

planning upcoming SRSLY events. The SRSLY youth meeting occurs every first Monday of the month at this time.

Anti-Drug Media Contest

SRSLY will be visiting classrooms at Beach Middle School during National Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 22-26, to ask Chelsea kids to think about the things in their lives that help them stay drug-free. An “anti-drug” can be anything – something you do for fun, someone you care about, a goal you are working toward, or knowledge of how drugs hurt your body, mind, and life. Using any form of media, students answer the question “What’s Your Anti-Drug?” Students can sub-mit posters, poems, videos, or stories about their anti-drugs to the contest. Winners from each grade will receive a gift card!

WEB

6th Graders introduced to Beach MS with “Where Everyone Belongs” Program

Before the official start of the school year kicked off, Beach's WEB (Where Eve-rybody Belongs) program opened its doors to over 180 6th graders. Over 52 8th grade WEB leaders were there to welcome them and help them get comfortable with their new school. WEB is in its 9th year at Beach and is led by Mike Lott, Brian Boos, Amy Doma and David Slusser. The program trains eighth-graders leaders to work with small groups of sixth-graders with the goal of building relationships among the groups. “When I went into sixth-grade, I was really nervous,” said WEB leader Juniper. “I want to help these sixth-graders.” Mr.

Slusser said that the WEB leaders help the sixth-graders feel more comfortable starting a new grade in a new building, but also fos-ters relationships among grades all year long.

“The orientation day activities focus on learning each other’s names, playing fun team building games, learning strategies to be successful at Beach, and a fun-themed school tour,” said Mr. Boos.

Over 180 6th graders gathered in the gymnasium and formed circles where they learned each others names and took turns an-swering fun 'get to know you' ques-tions. “Coming in before school started helped me feel welcomed and know where to go on the first day,” said sixth-graders Ad-die and Elleri. “We all felt better afterward," added Grace. WEB leaders will be role models for the sixth-graders all year long and check in with their small groups often. The high school of-fers a similar program called Link Crew for freshmen.
