Taddabur of the Quran ( القرآن تدبر ) – English Translation – Day 3
*Note this is a compilation of Surah Al Baqarah from the previous classes, the start of today’s
lecture is at the yellow highlight below*
Surah Al Baqarah ( البقرة سورة )
Surah Al Baqarah was revealed in Medina, and taking it is barakah and leaving it is a regret and the
magicians can’t handle someone reciting Surah Al Baqarah. And whoever recites Surah Al Baqarah
then the shaitan turns away for 3 days and night.

Umama said he heard Allah's Messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) say: Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of
Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, al-
Baqara and Surah Al 'Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two
shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqara,
for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot
confront it.) - Sahih Muslim 804
When we connect Surah Al Fatiha to Surah Al Baqarah, you’re asking Allah (swt) to guide you to the
Straight Path and the answer is immediately found in beginning of Surah Al Baqarah 2 ( ب ذٲلك ـ ل ٱلڪت
(This is the Book (the Qur'ân), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who
are Al-Muttaqûn [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of
sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds
which He has ordained)].) – the way to guidance is the Quran. But the condition is the Quran will be
a guidance to the muttaqeen. Allah (swt) teaches the muttaqqeen and accepts from them. It’s
important for knowledge and deeds to be based on taqwa.
The way to knowledge and deeds is only for the muttaqeen and this makes you want to have taqwa.
For this reason you have many ayat in Surah Al Baqarah telling you about taqwa. May Allah (swt)
make us among the muttaqeen. Ameen.
Theme of Surah Al Baqarah
Curriculum for succession in the land (منهج اإلستخالف في األرض): for this reason at the time of the
Companions, whoever had memorized Surah Al Baqarah was chosen a leader. The commands begin
from ayah 172 ( ها أي ـ ت من ڪلوا ءامنوا ٱلذين ي ـ ب كم ما طي ـ وٱشكروا رزقن اه ڪنتم إن لل تعبدون إي ) (O you who believe
(in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you
with, and be grateful to Allâh, if it is indeed He Whom you worship), which is about eating pure and
lawful food. If a person eats pure then he will produce what’s pure. The beginning of Surah Al
Baqarah is all preparation before it begins with the commands.

Preparation (تمهيد): before Allah (swt) tells us about the rulings.
Curriculum (المنهج): the legislation and rulings which is a way of life for us.
Dua’a (الدعاء): Dua’a to Allah (swt) regarding following the curriculum
1. Ayat 1 to 20 – Categories of the People (أصناف الناس): these categories are according to worship,
which goes back to Surah A Fatiha ‘Guide us to the Straight Path’. As if Allah (swt) is asking you,
‘what group do you want to be a part of?’ And notice it’s the muttaqeen mentioned first.
Muttaqeen (المتقين): if you’re not going to be from the muttaqeen then the Quran will not be of
benefit. If you’re following your desires then it will not be a guidance for you. So as if Allah (swt)
is advising you to be of the muttaqeen so the Quran can be a guidance for you. May Allah (swt)
make us among the muttaqeen. Ameen.
Disbelievers (الكفار)
Hypocrites (المنافقين): there’s two parables regarding the hypocrites and it’s the first parables
mentioned in the Quran. This shows it’s something prominent and widespread, may Allah (swt)
protect us from hypocrisy. Ameen.
2. Ayat 21 to 39: Servitude and its importance (العبودية و أهميتها)
Ayat 21 to 29: First Command and First Prohibition
(O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allâh), Who created you
and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqûn) Worship Allah (swt)
alone so you may be of the muttaqeen and don’t commit shirk. So what is the way to taqwa?
Now we’re getting the details. When you’re a slave of Allah (swt) then it will give you taqwa. The
first prohibition is to not commit shirk – ayah 22: ( ا ٱألرض لكم جعل ٱلذى ماء فرش ماء من نزل وأ بناء وٱلس ٱلس
مرٲت من بهۦ فأخرج ماء ا ٱلث تجعلوا فال لكم رزق ا لل تعلمون وأنتم أنداد ) (Who has made the earth a resting place
for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth
therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allâh (in worship) while
you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).). This is the foundation – worship
Allah (swt) alone and don’t commit shirk. You need to prepare your heart before receiving the
rulings.
Ayat 24-25: tell you about the recompense of paradise and hellfire.
Ayah 26: this is a parable about the fly, if you’re a slave of Allah (swt) you’re not going to ask
‘why is there a parable about a fly?’ So this is preparation before rulings are revealed. People
who follow their desires when rulings are given to them then they’ll say, ‘why do we have to do
this?’. So if you’re a true slave then you’ll take the parables and thus rulings.
Ayat 30-39: Beginning of servitude (بداية العبودية). The first story is the story of Adam (as) because
it’s telling you about servitude. What happened when he disobeyed Allah (swt) and repented,
and the role of Iblis. In order for the human to worship Allah (swt) he has to know that Allah
(swt) knows and he doesn’t know. The slave of Allah (swt) does not say ‘why’ to the rulings. He
knows that Allah (swt) knows best and he doesn’t. Allah (swt) taught Adam (as) all that he needs
and he was favored over the angels. It’s Allah (swt) Who teaches and if you don’t know, you say,
‘Allah knows best’. Knowledge is something required in order for you to have taqwa. Iblis is not
a slave because he was arrogant and refused Allah’s command. Allah (swt) will not test you until
you know something. Allah (swt) made it clear to Adam (as) to not come near to the tree. Allah

Page 3
(swt) told him his boundaries in paradise. If he comes close to the tree then he’ll be of the
wrongdoers. So don’t come close to the haram. The shaitan wants to take the human out of
paradise, meaning he wants to take us out of servitude and worship to Allah (swt). Then Adam
(as) repented to Allah (swt).
3. Ayat 40 to 152: State of the people of those who respond to Allah’s guidance
Ayat 40 to 123: Those who didn’t respond to Allah’s guidance (لم يستجيبوا لهداية للا) – this is a failure
example ( سلبي مثال ) – Banu Israel ( اسرائيل بنو ): they were bestowed with many favors from Allah
(swt) but they were ungrateful. The story of the cow shows you how they didn’t respond to
Allah (swt) commands. When Allah (swt) told them to slaughter the cow, they mocked and kept
asking questions until only one cow was left that could be acceptable for slaughter. So Allah
(swt) is telling us to not be like the people of the cow. The command was easy, but from the
many questions the matter became harder and complicated. We need to submit to Allah (swt)
and not ask because it will only make matters harder. After this story, Allah (swt) tells us about
the hardening of the hearts. When a command comes, don’t be the first to turn away and refuse
otherwise the heart turns away too and hardens. May Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen. Allah (swt)
gave them the covenant and rulings but they changed it. Magic is there but don’t come close to
it, similar to the tree, don’t come close to it. Don’t follow people who are following their desires.
Ayat 124 to 152: Those who responded to Allah’s guidance (استجابوا لهداية للا) – this is a successful
example (مثال ايجابي)
o Ayat 124-141: Ibrahim (as) (ابراهيم عليه السالم): Allah Ar Rabb tested Ibrahim (as) with
commands and he fulfilled it. Allah (swt) made him a leader so this is the reason for his
leadership and succession in the land. The one who responds to Allah’s commands then it
becomes a reason for his leadership. Ibrahim (as) was tested in being thrown in the fire, to
kill his son and place his wife and son away in a desert. He fulfilled it and was honored with
raising the foundations of the Bait. Ibrahim (as) showed his servitude by making dua’a to
Allah (swt) though he was doing a great deed. He surrendered to Allah (swt) and advised his
children to do the same.
o Ayat 142 to 152: Changing of the qibla (تحويل القبلة): the believers responded to the changing
of the qibla. When the command for changing thr qibla came it was in the middle of the ‘asr
prayer. When it was changed, who spoke? Those who are ignorant. The birr is not about
outer deeds, but the birr is belief and taqwa – ‘to listen and obey’. Allah (swt) is The Judge
and King and He’s the One Who gives us the way of life. Allah (swt) praised the ummah of
Mohammed (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) which follows the curriculum and way set by Allah (swt). They will be
witnesses on all other nations on the Day of Judgement because they have the Quran and
the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) will bear witness on his ummah. Allah (swt) made this test of changing
the qibla to see who will follow the messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and who will not. This shows you we
need guidance, but in order to benefit from it we need taqwa and not follow our desires.
Following our desires will blind us from the guidance. Your qibla is your direction, what is
your goal? The One Who follows Allah (swt) will be guided. Allah (swt) gave the Prophet
knowledge and those around him are following their desires, if he follows them then

he’ll be among the wrong-doers, so what about us? Subhan Allah. The truth from Allah (swt)
is clear, so don’t have any doubts. If a person follows his desires then he will not race to the
good deeds. But the believer’s attitude is we ‘listen and obey’ thus he races to the good
deeds. Ayah 151: is telling you to follow the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and his qualities is he recites the
ayat to you, he purifies you from bad manners and conducts, and then he teaches you. This
shows you being taught is not immediate, first listening and then manners and then
learning, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) commanded the believers to remember Him and He will
remember them in the heavens above. And this is a great reward itself. Dhikr is the head of
gratitude. You will not be grateful if you don’t remember Allah (swt). For this reason it’s
important to always remember Allah (swt). Fasting is not only abstaining from food and
drink, but abstaining from thoughts besides Allah (swt). When you remember Allah (swt)
then you’ll be grateful but when you remember the one who’s imperfect then it will make
you ungrateful and always complaining.
4. Ayat 153 to 253: Worship is encompassing all parts of life
o Ayat 153 to 158: Calamities (البتالء): seek help with Allah (swt) in all matters of your life. And
what are the means to istian’a? Patience and prayer. The greatest test is to die in the way of
Allah (swt). All of us our tested, this is the way of Allah (swt) but what’s required from us is to be
patient. Ibrahim (as) was tested and passed, his wife Hajar was also tested and she was honored
by making her running through Safa and Marwah as one of the symbols of Allah (swt).
o Ayat 159 to 167: Signs of servitude (عالمات العبودية): the sign of servitude is to respond to Allah’s
command, listen and obey, and then spread the guidance from Allah (swt) and not conceal it.
Otherwise Allah’s curse will be upon him, unless he repents, corrects himself and makes it clear.
Sign of servitude is to repent and return to Allah (swt) when making a mistake. And from the
signs of servitude is your ilah is One, worship One, and this is a mercy from Allah (swt). And sign
of servitude is love of Allah (swt) and it’s the head of worship. The more your faith increases, the
more you love Allah (swt) intensely meaning nothing else can overtake your heart. Those who
worship other than Allah (swt) will free themselves from each other in the hellfire.
o Ayat 168 to 214: Life and worship (الحياة و العبادة):
Food (األكل): Food has an effect on a person’s worship and manners. For this reason Allah
(swt) commanded twice regarding food, once all of the people to eat halal and pure food,
pure meaning it doesn’t harm your body. The second command for food is to the believers
to eat what’s pure and when they eat it’s a worship for them to draw closer to Allah (swt)
and be grateful to Him. The disbeliever eats out of desire. What is the relationship between
food and the shaitan? Recall the story of Adam (as), it was regarding food. When a person
eats haram then it’ll affect him. We ask Allah (swt) to grant us halal rizq because it affects
our worship. The true birr is what’s inside the heart and the ones who are guided to the birr,
to goodness, are the ones who are truthful and have taqwa.
Qisas (القصاص): look at the connection between food and qisas. The first sin of Adam (as)
was regarding food and the first sin committed on the earth was murder which took place
between the sons of Adam (as). On the Day of Judgement, the first matter to be settled
amongst the people is killing amongst the people.

Page 5
Wassiyah (الوصية): before a person dies, he should have a wassiyah, which is besides the
rulings of inheritance, for example if there are debts that need to be paid off, etc. The
wassiyah is a right upon the muttaqeen. Anyone who’s muttaqee will do it.
Fasting (الصيام): fasting is in order for the person to have taqwa. And from the ayat regarding
fasting, it mentions the Quran and dua’a, subhan Allah.
Prohibition to steal other people’s wealth (النهي عن أكل أموال الناس بالباطل): this can happen by
stealing, force, etc. Notice after fasting this is mentioned. Fasting is about not eating what’s
halal for a period of time, so what about ‘eating’ what’s haram, meaning people’s wealth,
subhan Allah. The deen came to protect the human’s body, mind, deen, chastity and society
overall.
To know the timings (األهلة): to know the seasons of worship. Birr is not about making things
complicated, but birr is to have taqwa.
Battle in the cause of Allah (swt) (القتال في سبيل للا): this for the raising Allah’s name and
spreading the deen, and this has many regulations and conditions. It is not fighting anyone
or destroying homes or trees or causing destruction.
Hajj and umrah (الحج و العمرة): there are boundaries in the hajj, and it’s important to have
taqwa in order to not cross the boundaries. Taqwa is the provision for hajj and for a person’s
entire life in order to worship Allah (swt) in truth. Allah (swt) accepts from the muttaqeen.
The rites of hajj are mentioned. We should remember Allah (swt) more than anyone else.
And finally the dua’a is mentioned to ask Allah (swt) for goodness in the duniya and akhira.
After all of these rulings the hypocrites are mentioned, subhan Allah. Recall the hypocrites
are mentioned in the beginning of Surah Al Baqarah and now here. They love to talk,
especially what’s inside their heart and how good it is. And if there’s a dispute, then he’s a
great disputer. Corruption is a result of the sins. And if he’s told to have taqwa, then he
doesn’t accept the command. Whereas the believer sells his self seeking Allah’s pleasure.
He’s doing good deeds as if he’s selling himself for Allah’s pleasure. After all of this, Allah
(swt) gives a general command to the believers to enter all of the rites of Islam, don’t leave
anything from it and don’t follow the footsteps of the shaitan.
o Ayat 215 to 242: Rulings for the household (أحكام األسرة):
Spending (النفقة): it tells you about who to spend on and most importantly for those who are
near and the parents.
Orphans (األيتام)
Marriage (النكاح)
Menses (المحيض)
What the right hands possess (األيمان)
Those who vow not to have a relation with their wife forever or for more than four months
Divorce (الطالق)
Nursing (الرضاع)
‘Iddah (العدة): waiting period after a woman is divorced or widowed

In between all of this, it’s mentioned that perhaps you hate something while it’s good for
you and perhaps you love something while it’s bad for you. This is telling us about the
rulings.
Drinking and gambling ruins the household.
o Ayat 243 to 253: Responding to Allah’s command (الستجابة): here you find two stories:
The first story is about thousands who turned away (األلوف الذين فروا): this is a story of many
people who turned away from their homes in fear of death or a plague. They didn’t respond
to Allah’s command, which was to have fought for His sake or remained in their homes in
the case of the plague. Allah (swt) made them all die at one time as a punishment for not
responding to His command and decree, and then he brought them back to life. Allah (swt)
has a great favor upon the people but most people are ungrateful. What do we learn from
this story? Respond to Allah’s commands and do not turn away from His decrees; rather we
need to be grateful.
The second story is about Talut (Saul) and Jalut (Goliath) (طالوت و جالوت): this happened after
the time of Musa (as). Allah (swt) commanded Banu Israel to fight for His sake, but they said
‘how can we fight if we don’t have a king?’ So Allah (swt) sent a king to them, He sent Talut
to them as their king and they refused him, subhan Allah. This shows when a person puts
conditions then it becomes complicated. They refused because they said we have more
wealth and he does not come from a lineage of kings. But they are the ones who asked for a
king. This is a test and a person should ‘listen and obey’ from the start and not give excuses.
Allah (swt) favored Talut over them for the knowledge and physical strength he has. This
teaches us when a command from Allah (swt) comes, then we should respond. They faced
another test for their patience, they were thirsty and came across a river. Whoever drinks
from it then he’s from the hypocrites, and the one who only drinks a little then he is worthy
to be with the king, and many failed this test and drank from the river. This shows Allah
(swt) tests His people through the commands to see who is truthful and will respond. Allah
(swt) is the One Who chooses His messengers.
5. Ayat 254 to 286: Magnification of Allah (swt) is the foundation to servitude (التعظيم أساس العبودية): a
person needs to love Allah (swt) foremost and magnify Him for all worships.
o Ayat 254 to 260: Story of magnification and tawheed
Foundation of the curriculum Ayat Al Kursi (أساس المنهج): Allah (swt) commands to
spending and you notice there are many ayat in Surah Al Baqarah regarding spending.
Spending for Allah (swt) keeps the person away from hypocrisy and be firm on taqwa. Ayat
Al Kursi is the greatest ayah, it tells you Who is Allah (swt), He doesn’t sleep or slumber, He
has complete power and knowledge, no one can do anything or intercede without His
permission. He protects all. Allah (swt) is telling us there is no compulsion in the deen. There
are two types of guidance: one shows you who is Allah (swt) and the second guidance is to
act on it. People are then two groups who respond: believers and disbelievers. The one’s
who respond then Allah (swt) is their Wali. After being given the way of life and curriculum,
Allah (swt) is telling us Who He is, so will you respond or not? When a person responds and
believes then Allah (swt) removes him from darknesses to light.

Stories (القصص): there are three stories and they came after ayat Al Kursi and there is a
common theme amongst these three stories.
Story of Ibrahim (as) and Namrud (قصة ابراهيم و النمرود): Namrud said he can bring life and
death and Ibrahim (as) knows he is unable to do this. So he told him my Rabb brings the
sun from the east, so bring him it from the west, and Namrud knew he was defeated.
Story of the one whom Allah (swt) resurrected after one hundred years: ( قصة الذي بعثه للا
after the story of Namrud, it is clear only Allah (swt) can bring life to the :(بعد مائة عام
dead, another story is about a man was not sure if Allah (swt) can bring the life to dead,
so Allah (swt) made him die and brought back him back to life after hundred years. So
he knew Allah (swt) is able to do all things.
Story of Ibrahim (as) and the birds (قصة ابراهيم و الطيور): Ibrahim (as) asked Allah (swt) to
see how He brings the dead to life in order for his heart to find rest. Allah (swt) told him
to kill four birds, mix their parts and place them in three mountains and call on them
and they will be brought to life. So you find the common theme between the three
stories that only Allah (swt) can give life and death and bring the dead to life. Allah (swt)
is Al Aziz Al Hakeem.
o Ayat 261 to 283: Spending for Allah (swt) is a proof of servitude
Parables about spending (األمثال): this is to show the importance of spending by giving these
parables.
Parable of spending in general (مثل النفقة): When you spend then it’s like a seed that
grows and becomes multiplied.
Parable of a hypocrite’s spending (مثل نفقة المنافق): And don’t spend out of riya’a, like the
hypocrites, which is like little soil upon a rock, when the rain comes then it just wipes
away the soil, making the rock bare and nothing grows.
Parable of a believer’s spending (مثل نفقة المؤمن): As for those who spending for Allah (swt)
is like a garden high above in the best place, whether lots or little rain comes, it grows.
The one who changes after faith (المنقلب بعد ايمانه): he had a good garden, but he had no
one to take care of it, then it’s struck with a fiery whirlwind and destroyed it. This
person did good deeds, but he did something which nullified his deeds.
Command to spend (األمر بالنفقة)
Warning from the shaitan (الحذر من الشيطان): the shaitan promises you poverty if you spend
and commands to indecency.
Prohibition of taking interest and its parable
Documentation of debt (توثيق الدين)
o Ayat 284 to 286: Worship Allah (swt) alone (العبادة لل وحده): the Companions felt burdened after
the revealing of the ayah of being accounted for their thoughts as well. So Allah (swt) responded
with the two final ayat in Surah Al Baqarah. These two ayat are sufficient for everything, even
your worries. The foundation is believe, and to respond to Allah’s command by ‘listening and
obeying’. So we hope from Allah (swt) to forgive us for our shortcomings and sins. Allah (swt)
does not burden you with more than you can handle. Whoever does good, then he will find
good, and whoever does evil, then he will find evil. Then we ask Allah (swt) to not take us if we

forget or make a mistake in following the curriculum. And do not make us take more like the
previous nations. Pardon us, forgives us for our mistakes, have mercy on us, you’re our Mawla
and Disposer of affairs, grant us victory. The curriculum in Surah Al Baqarah is to have
knowledge, taqwa, and act upon the rulings. This is the response to ‘Guide us to the Straight
Path’.
Homework:
Parables in Surah Al Baqarah: for example parable of the hypocrites with
lightning, parable of the fly, etc.
1. Parable of hypocrites: Ayah 17: ( ا ٱستوقد ٱلذى كمثل مثلهم ا نار ذهب ۥ حوله ما أضاءت فلم ت فى وتركهم بنورهم ٱلل ـ ظلم
يبصرون ل ) (Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around
him, Allâh took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.)
2. Parable of hypocrites: Ayat 19-20:
(Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is
darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning
thunderclap for fear of death. But Allâh ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allâh will gather
them all together). (19) The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them,
they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allâh willed, He could
have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allâh has power over all things. (20))
3. Parable of mosquito: Ayah 26: ( إن ا مثال يضرب أن يستحىۦ ل ٱلل ما فوقها فما بعوضة ٱلحق أنه مون فيعل ءامنوا ٱلذين فأم
هم من ب ا ر أراد ماذا فيقولون ڪفروا ٱلذين وأم ذا ٱلل ـ ا بهۦ يضل مثال به ا بهۦ ويهدى ڪثير سقين إل بهۦ يضل وما كثير ـ ٱلف )
(Verily, Allâh is not ashamed to set forth a parable even of a mosquito or so much more when it is
bigger (or less when it is smaller) than it. And as for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth
from their Lord, but as for those who disbelieve, they say: "What did Allâh intend by this parable?"
By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. And He misleads thereby only those who are
Al-Fâsiqûn (the rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).)
4. Parable of disbeliever: Ayah 171: ( ل فهم عمى بكم صم ونداء دعاء إل يسمع ل ماب ينعق ٱلذى كمثل ڪفروا ٱلذين ومثل
And the example of those who disbelieve, is as that of him who shouts to those (flock of) (يعقلون
sheep) that hears nothing but calls and cries. (They are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they do not
understand.)
5. Parable of spending in general: Ayah 261: ( ثل سبيل فى أموٲلهم ينفقون ٱلذين م ة كمثل ٱلل بتت حب كل فى سنابل سبع أن
بلة ائة سن ة م حب عف وٱلل ـ يشاء لمن يض عليم وٲسع وٱلل ) (The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way
of Allâh, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred
grains. Allâh gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allâh is All-Sufficient for His creatures'

That is because they say: "Trading is only like Ribâ (usury)," whereas Allâh has permitted trading and
forbidden Ribâ (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Ribâ
