Example #1:Example #1:
“The best known achievements of the ancient Egyptians are the
pyramids they built for their rulers. These gigantic stone structures—
marvels of architectural and engineering skills—have been
preserved by the dry climate for about 4500 years.”

Without taking notes, Without taking notes, I paraphrased like I paraphrased like
this.this.
![Page 17: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

The greatest achievements of the ancient Egyptians are the pyramids
they built for their rulers. These gigantic stone structures are marvels of architectural and
engineering skill and have been preserved by the dry climate for
about 4500 years.
All I did was make All I did was make 3 tiny changes: 3 tiny changes:
![Page 20: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
That’s pretty That’s pretty much the same much the same
thing as changing thing as changing the word the word “the”“the” to to the word the word “a”“a” and and
calling it calling it paraphrasing!paraphrasing!
![Page 21: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
But if I But if I take notestake notes like like this…this…
• Ancient Egyptians→known for pyramids
• P = huge stone tombs for their rulers
• Still standing after 4500 years b/c of Egypt’s dry climate……I can paraphrase like I can paraphrase like
this:this:
![Page 22: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Ancient Egyptians accomplished many amazing things. They
are most well-known for building huge stone tombs
known as pyramids. Pyramids that they built over 4500 years ago are still standing because of their excellent construction and the country’s dry climate.
![Page 23: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
This attempt at paraphrasing
was MUCH BETTERMUCH BETTER because I restated the facts
from the encylopedia in another way.
It sounds more like me and less like an encyclopedia.
![Page 24: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)

“The mighty Nile River was the lifeblood of ancient Egypt. The fertile soil enabled farmers to raise a huge supply of food.

Ancient Egypt’s lifeblood was the mighty Nile River. The
fertile soil allowed farmers to raise a huge supply of food. It
also provided water for irrigation and was Egypt’s main
transportation route.
![Page 28: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

All I did was flip-flop All I did was flip-flop the order of the first the order of the first sentence and use a sentence and use a
couple of simple couple of simple synonyms.synonyms.
That is That is STILLSTILL not not paraphrasing!paraphrasing!
![Page 30: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Ancient Egypt’s lifeblood was the mighty Nile River.
The fertile soil allowed farmers to raise a huge supply of food. It also
provided water for irrigation and was Egypt’s main transportation route.
![Page 31: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
But if I take notes like But if I take notes like this…this…•Nile = Egypt’s “lifeblood”• It provided:
– Fertile soil = lots of food– Water for irrigation/farming– Transportation route
……I can paraphrase like I can paraphrase like this:this:
![Page 32: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Ancient Egypt was able to thrive so well because it is located
near the “mighty Nile River.” This river made the soil very rich, so farmers were able to grow and sell a lot of food. The Nile was also important
because it provided Egyptians with a transportation route and a way to irrigate farms.
![Page 33: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
This attempt at paraphrasing was MUCH BETTER because I did an
even better job of restating the facts
![Page 34: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Here’s one final Here’s one final excerpt of the excerpt of the
article “Ancient article “Ancient Egypt” from Egypt” from World Book World Book
EncyclopediaEncyclopedia……
![Page 35: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
The Egyptians also believed they would experience life after death in
an afterlife and sometimes made elaborate preparations for death
and burial. For example, the Egyptians mummified corpses to prevent the bodies from decaying
and to preserve them for the afterlife.
Example #3:Example #3:
![Page 36: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
And here’s my And here’s my final attempt at final attempt at paraphrasing…paraphrasing…
![Page 37: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
One of the things that was extremely important to Egyptian culture was the idea of an “afterlife.” Because they
believed that they would experience life after death, it was not only very
important to have highly detailed burial ceremonies, but also to preserve the
bodies for the afterlife. They accomplished this through
“mummification.”
![Page 38: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
![Page 39: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
This attempt is my best one yet because I think it’s pretty
obvious that I thought about what I was reading before I
wrote anything down.
It says the same thing as the It says the same thing as the original but in a original but in a VERY different VERY different
wayway!!
![Page 40: Note-taking STEP 1: Read entire section FIRST!](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022032805/56649ef25503460f94c045eb/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
