IntroductionIntroduction and section introductions written by Nate Brown

If you're like most drummers, you've probably gravitated toward playing drum beats that feature steady eighth notes on the hi-hat or ride. That's understandable. The first beats most of us learned to play were eighth note grooves. Beginner books feature mainly eighth note beats. In fact, a majority of rock and pop songs rely heavily on eighth note beats. They're everywhere!

This book isn't meant to deny the significance (nor the importance) of eighth note drum beats. We have to be able to play them, and we have to be good at them. However, a problem arises when they're the only types of beats that we can really nail. Being locked into the eighth-note jail isn't a good thing. It's constrictive and limits our potential.

The goal of this book is to make you as comfortable with non-eighth-note beats as you currently are with eighth-note beats. In sections A and B, Patrick introduces you to nine linear patterns. These patterns are placed in different combinations throughout each exercise.

You'll also notice that each exercise is a two-measure repeating beat. The first measure is what I call the break-it-up groove. The second measure is the meat and potatoes. The first measure is there to give you practice with transitioning. When playing songs, there are a lot of transitions, and this is an area that a lot of drummers struggle with. It's one thing to be able to lock into one repeating pattern over and over. It's more realistic if you're presented with an opportunity to transition into the groove, as it mimics what you'll be doing in a song situation.

Lastly, I suggest that you record yourself playing each page (either audio or video) when you first start practicing it. Then, after you've worked on it for several days, record yourself again. You'll be amazed at the improvement you notice. It's harder to notice the improvement if you haven't recorded. Your progress is gradual, so you won't notice it as much if you don't record. Seeing and hearing your improvement will keep you motivated as you continue working through the book.

Section A: The grooves in this section use the 5 patterns below. By playing multiple combinations of these patterns (and becoming comfortable with each pattern), you'll build the coordination to nail these patterns in any situation with ease.

Start slowly, use the correct sticking and be sure to play the correct dynamics. Playing the beats cleanly and accurately is much more important than playing them quickly. As you work through this section, your speed will naturally increase. Just keep at it!
