ennedy Health and Jefferson entered into a binding Definitive Agreement (DA) on August 9th that lays out the terms of how our two health care organizations will integrate. Jefferson is the combined entity formed by the merger of Abington and Jefferson in May 2015 and further expanded with the addition of Aria Health in July 2016. With the DA now signed, Kennedy and Jefferson will take the next steps toward finalizing the integration by filing for all necessary federal and state regulatory reviews and approvals, a process expected to take up to one year. Following the review process in New Jersey’s Community Health Care Assets Protection Act, the transaction will be complete, bringing this new, innovative health care system to South Jersey. The boards of Kennedy and Jefferson unanimously approved the signing of the DA, which provides for Kennedy to have equal representation on a combined board with Jefferson, Abington and Aria. The proposed Kennedy-Jefferson partnership will create an innovative “hub-and-hub” model, where Kennedy will be the southern New Jersey hub of a fully integrated and expanded Jefferson health care organization. Together, Kennedy and Jefferson will determine the strategic priorities in South Jersey as we move forward and serve the region together. Through the integration process, Kennedy’s workforce will remain the same across all locations, and patients will continue to receive enhanced services by our trusted physicians, nurses and hospital staff. The DA also outlines the following important commitments to the South Jersey community: Completion of a multi-specialty medical office building, an enclosed parking facility and a new hospital patient tower at Kennedy – Cherry Hill; Continued planning for a new hospital patient tower and enclosed parking facility at Kennedy – Washington Township; Maintaining Kennedy’s academic and clinical affiliation with Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine; and Joseph W. Hundreds of Kennedy Health employees and supporters

were on hand Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Kennedy – Stratford

for a ceremony marking the signing of a Definitive

Agreement between Kennedy and Jefferson, which

announced plans to partner earlier this year.

The Definitive Agreement spells out the terms of

how Kennedy will integrate with Jefferson following

unanimous approval by the governing bodies of both

organizations. Kennedy and Jefferson will now take the

next steps toward finalizing the integration by seeking

all necessary federal and state regulatory approvals, a

process expected to take up to one year.

"Kennedy and Jefferson share a common culture

of commitment to our patients, physicians and

employees,” said Kennedy Health President & CEO

Joseph W. Devine, shown here addressing the audience of well-wishers. “ This transaction will benefit

the residents of southern New Jersey by bringing

together enhanced clinical services in the communities

we serve. As we transform health care across the

region, the focus will be on continuing to provide

highly personalized, high-quality services in convenient

settings, close to home.”

For the 2nd year in a row, Kennedy President & CEO Joseph W. Devine has beennamed to South Jersey Bizmagazine’s “Power 50” list of the most influential leaders

in the region.

Joe was praised in the magazine’s July issue for “advancing the South Jersey

medical landscape,” noting that “under his leadership, Kennedy has thrived in areas

of innovation, safety and overall patient care.”

Kennedy Introduces New Patient Fall Protection TechnologyKennedy – Cherry Hill piloted a new patient safety system in September that allows nurses to be “in” a patient’s roomwithout actually being at their bedside.

The innovative AvaSys® TeleSitter® system enables cliniciansto see and hear patients around-the-clock from a central monitoring station, used primarily for those at a high risk offalling. Placed at the head of a patient bed, the system isequipped with a video camera and two-way audio, allowingcare team members to monitor and communicate with patients.

Kennedy will introduce the bedside safety system at its Stratford and Washington Township hospital campusesthis October. Since the AvaSys® TeleSitter® is a “live-feed” device and does not permanently record or savefootage, patient privacy is never compromised.

“The AvaSys® TeleSitter® creates another layer of patient safety at Kennedy,” said Chief Nurse Executive HeleneBurns, MSN, RN. “Our staff is excited to use this cutting-edge technology to help keep patients safe.”

Ensuring Quality and Safety in Kennedy’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

In November 2014, Kennedy Health expanded its

cardiac services in South Jersey by partnering with

Cooper University Health Care, creating a new Cardiac

Catheterization Laboratory at the Kennedy Heart

Center in Washington Township.

The Kennedy Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, also

known as the “Cath Lab,” is home to a team of highly

skilled physicians, nurses and technologists dedicated

to providing high-quality cardiac services.

Kennedy’s Cath Lab offers a wide array of diagnosticcardiovascular services and is a valuable resource fordetecting narrowing and occlusions of the coronaryarteries. However, our Cath Lab offers much more than just the diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

Kennedy’s state-of-the-art lab performs right heartcatheterizations for heart failure diagnosis, catheterizations to detect valvular disease and measures heart pressures – all of which help physicianscreate individualized patient treatment plans.

Kennedy’s Cath Lab is minimally invasive, as most

procedures are performed through the wrist,

lowering recovery time to approximately one hour.

Once patients are referred to Kennedy’s team, they

are thoroughly examined to determine if they meet

diagnostic criteria.

Exclusion criteria is as follows:• Ejection Fraction of the Left Ventricle (LVEF) must not be < 35 percent

• Patients must not have Left Main (LM) Disease• Patients must not have Acute Coronary Syndrome• Patients must not have Severe Aortic Stenosis (AS) Mean Gradient by Echocardiogram > 40 mmHg

To date, Kennedy’s Catheterization Lab has performed

more than 180 heart catheterizations, while maintaining a zero percent complication rate! But, for Kennedy to continue to build on its success,

the Cath Lab must reach the 200 case mark in2016 alone.

Once 200 cases are treated over a four-quarter period,

the Cath Lab can increase its cardiovascular services to

include treatment of Acute ST Elevation MyocardialInfarctions. Given the high volume of Kennedy’sEDs, this would be an invaluable service to our

patients, helping them receive needed care

as quickly as possible.

We looked forward to your continued support of

the Kennedy Heart Center. For more information,

please call 856/582-2555.

Please remain vigilant about all antibiotic prescribingrequirements and the need for infectious diseasesconsultations.

Remember: You must document in a patient’s medicalrecord or during order entry the reason or diagnosisfor all prescribed antibiotics.

An infectious diseases consultation is mandatory forany patient who:

• has sepsis (including severe sepsis or septic shock);

• is currently prescribed more than two antibiotics; or

• has been diagnosed with Clostridium difficile colitis.

he Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment

(DSRIP) is a demonstration project with the N.J.

Department of Health and Centers for Medicare &

Medicaid Services (CMS) designed to result in better

care for individuals, better health for the population,

and lowered costs by transitioning hospital funding to

a model where payment is contingent on achieving

health improvement goals.

Historically, Kennedy’s DSRIP program addressed the

needs of underserved Medicaid, dual-eligible and

charity care patients, specifically those with diabetes.

As of August 2016, Kennedy expanded beyond

diabetes to include patients with hypertension.

DSRIP, now branded at Kennedy as the HealthInnovation Program, aims to:• increase patient access to primary and specialty care;

• improve care coordination between hospital and

outpatient settings;

• address the gap between clinical care and community

services in the health care delivery system;

• improve patient self-care management;

• reduce admissions related to complications of

diabetes and hypertension;

• reduce unnecessary ED visits; and

• implement technology to facilitate patient tracking

and communication of clinical data.

Chronic care management programs, such as Kennedy’s

Health Innovation Program, are becoming essential for

hospital systems, as financial incentives are offered for

better quality outcomes. Kennedy’s DSRIP project

alone has resulted in approximately $3.3 million lesshealth care spending through reduced hospital costs

and reduced governmental payments.

For more information, call Amanda Kimmel, CorporateDirector of Clinical Integration, at (856) 770-8350.
