Recommendation for Council action, pursuant to Motion (O'Farrell - Buscaino): INSTRUCT the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to install a commemorative sign in front of the Capitol Records Tower located at 1750 Vine Street to acknowledge the company's 75th anniversary and the building's status as a Historic-Cultural Monument. Fiscal Impact Statement: Neither the City Administrative Officer nor the Chief Legislative Analyst has completed a financial analysis of this report. Community Impact Statement: None submitted. SUMMARY On October 26, 2016, Council considered Motion (O'Farrell - Buscaino) relative to installing a commemorative sign in front of the Capitol Records Tower to acknowledge the company's 75th anniversary and the building's status as a Historic-Cultural Monument. Motion states that Capitol Records, the first West Coast-based record company in the United States, was founded in Hollywood in 1942. Capitol Records has been home to many of the world's most acclaimed artists, including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Coldplay, Neil Diamond, Paul McCartney, the Steve Miller Band, Linda Ronstadt, Les Paul, Katy Perry, Pink Floyd, Frank Sinatra, Bonnie Raitt and countless others. Motion movers go on to state that Capitol Records is also renowned for its circular office tower designed by Welton Becket. Completed in 1956, the building is home to recording studios and echo chambers that produce some of the finest acoustics in the entire world. The Capitol Records Tower is recognized by the City of Los Angeles as a Historic-Cultural Monument and is a beloved, iconic feature of the Hollywood skyline. As Capitol Records prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2017, Motion movers believe the City should install a commemorative sign to celebrate the occasion in recognition of the profound impact Capitol Records has had on the economy, culture, and history of Los Angeles. Council referred Motion to the Public Works and Gang Reduction Committee for consideration. At its meeting held November 28, 2016, the Public Works and Gang Reduction Committee recommended that Council approve the installation of the commemorative sign.
