Last week’s competition was to share a story by writing a review of your favourite
book. I was impressed with all the entries, but there can only be one winner. The
winner created a lovely booklet all about ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl. Congratulations
Ellie Pritchard from 3B.
Now to this week’s competition.
‘British Sandwich Week’ has just finished. Since being discovered and named by
the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762, the Great British Sandwich has become
something of an institution. This week’s competition is to design a healthy, tasty
sandwich which does not contain any meat. Draw and label your sandwich and
give instructions on how to make it.
Pop your review in the Shinewaves postbox with your name and class on the back
by the morning of Tuesday 25th May.

Helpful Hints:
Communication
It is really important to
check your child’s book
bag each night after
school. Newsletters are
sent home on a weekly
basis and we do send
other letters and
communication as well.
Staff are concerned at
the amount of what
appears to be unread
information left in
children’s bookbags each
day!

Children in the Spotlight
Tesco vouchers for Schools
and Clubs
Last year we collected nearly
35,000 vouchers, which we
used to 'buy' sports
equipment, playground
equipment and cooking
utensils.
Lets see if we can beat last
years total! Please can you
send any vouchers into
school. Tesco have now
stopped issuing vouchers in
their stores. The deadline for
sending vouchers into school
is Friday 11th June 2010.
Unfortunately we are only
able to accept vouchers
issued in this year's scheme,
which are green.
We have just over 29
thousand vouchers up to now
so we still have a way to go to
match last year.
Tesco have said that last year
only 60% of vouchers issued,
were actually redeemed by
schools across the country.
Aaron and Elliot
have achieved
their Yellow belt
for Martial Arts.
Fantasic!
Heather received the Victoria Gibson Highest Achievement Award for Speech
and Drama. Wow!
Jamie has passed his 50m Rainbow Swimming Award. Terrific!
Rachel has passed her Grade 2 Duckling Award. Well done!
Lucy has achieved her Level 7 Gymnastics Award. Wonderful!
On Thursday 13th May some year 10’s and 11’s, from Meols Cop taught younger
children from different schools, including Norwood. Zoe King, Melissa Heyes, Ruby
Fellowes, Erin Thornton from year 5 and Abbie King from year 1 represented our school.
They danced brilliantly considering there were about 200 people watching them on
stage, including Mr Postlethwaite and Mrs Rigby on the front row! For 6 weeks they
practised and practised very hard for the show they performed on Thursday. The
audience really liked the dance the children did for them.
By Zoe King and Melissa Heyes.

Year 5‘s Henry VIII surprise
While year 5 were in the woods and meant to be doing art, a surprisingly unfamiliar voice called out ‘Where is my
horse?’ Mr.Postlethwaite panicked. Mrs Goulden was extremely shocked. All the children looked around to find a
weird man wearing strange clothes, who proclaimed that he was Henry Vlll! Bravely Mrs. Goulden stepped
forward and asked his Majesty if he would answer some questions which the children made up themselves. After
break, Mrs Goulden exclaimed that the children were going to sketch other children in their sketch books, King
Henry kindly offered for the children to sketch him. One of the things King Henry Vlll told us was that he enjoyed
hunting and playing the lyre and the lute. The children tried very hard to get every speck and detail of Henry
down onto their paper inside their sketch books. The children were happy with the end result.
Family Orienteering Day
After the terrific successes of the previous Family Learning Days focussing on Art and Literacy and
on Cooking, our first outdoor venture introduced parents and children to orienteering. Steve
McLean from British Orienteering UK last year worked with some of our Y6 children as part of our
links with Stanley High School Sports College Partnership. They enjoyed it so much that we knew
our parents and children would relish the opportunity of exploring the playground, the field and the
woods as a whole day of map work, only to be halted with a delicious lunch from Josie and Sue in the
kitchen. The response was tremendous with 32 families taking part and so the atmosphere was
superb as some families grew more and more competitive as the day moved on and the skill level
increased. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part, all the staff for putting in
extra time in setting up everything after school and on the day itself and Kim Taylor, the school’s
Parent Support Adviser for organising everything including the weather! We were sorry we had to
disappoint people but will give them first refusal when we run it again next summer.
