Koru Care Annual Charity Auction

The vintage guardians of New Zealand’s skies formed a winged guard of honour for the guests attending the Koru Care Annual

Charity Auction, as they fi led past to take their places at the dinner tables on July 19. The Air Force Museum’s Aircraft Hall was fi lled with music and the cacophony of the loud and lively bidding for the luxury items, in which was the smartest and biggest hanger party of the year.

Following the dinner, and with attendees emptier in the pocket than at the beginning of the evening, the counting could begin to eventually

enable Koru Care children to take their dream holiday to Disneyland. Canterbury people stepped out on a cold and rainy night and with the national carrier, Air New Zealand, celebrated the 30th Koru Care anniversary in style and with generosity.

Options for a permanent St Albans community centre, which could in-clude a pool, will be discussed this week.

City councillor Pauline Cotter has called for city council staff to organ-ise community consultation on the proposed centre before the end of the month.

Science Alive staff recently helped Cotswold School pupils to solve a mystery using science.

The year 6 students were asked to solve a fictional crime using real scientific equipment and methods.

The pupils investigated five people working at a sweet fac-tory, to find the one who had sto-len the recipe for the next great invention.

In groups the students tested handwriting samples, footprints, chemical reactions, times the suspects arrived at work and in-vestigated clues left behind at the crime scene.

The groups were able to iden-tify who the thief was and his motive within two hours.

The children enjoyed being scientists for the day.

Pupil Cameron Talbot, 11, said that his favourite part of the day was testing the chemicals to see if

they were an acid or a base.Alyssa Bartosh, 11, said that

she enjoyed the whole day.

Lyttelton based illustrator Hel-en Taylor delighted Cotswold School pupils with her illus-trated books last week.

She showed the students how to take a story, sketch your ideas onto small paper, copy these only large sheets of paper and add vibrant colours.

Ms Taylor has illustrated more than 20 books in New Zealand, completing about one book each year. Her preferred method of painting is waterco-lour.

The pupils were able to pre-view her latest book, Kakapo Dance, which should be out in shops this week.

In the afternoon, a few chil-dren were selected from their classes to take part in an after-noon workshop, where they lis-tened to a story that Ms Taylor

had illustrated and then had to draw the images that came to their minds without seeing her illustrations.

The children were inspired by the illustrator and asked her many questions.

Using science to solve a mystery

EXAMINA-TION: Cameron Talbot, 11, and his friends test handwriting samples to solve a mystery posed by Sci-ence Alive staff.

SCIENTIST: Pupil Alyssa Bartosh, 11, measures the reaction of chemicals to help to solve the mock crime.

Illustration workshop

A BIRD IN THE HAND: Illustra-tor Helen Taylor showed Cots-wold School students some of the illustrations she created for her latest book, Kakapo Dance.

INSPIRED: Bridie Cameron, 9, and Elena Devlin, 10, created their own illustrations with help from Helen Taylor.

Construction of the Uni-Cycle cycleway is expected to start in November, after a bid to delay the project failed.

The planned cycleway will run from Canterbury University to the city, and is the first of the 13 major routes in the $68.3 million city council cycleway network.

Representatives from Christ-church Girls’ High School and the Ministry of Education asked the city council on Thursday to delay finalising plans for the cy-cleway by up to three months.

The school wanted to finalise its own plans for rebuilding and extending earthquake-damaged buildings before work on the cycleway started.

Their plans involved buying parts of Matai St, which would require the street to be closed to traffic or reduced to one lane.

But city council staff said that would not be possible, because of the amount of traffic using the street and because there were residents living on the street who needed access to their homes.

Resource Management Group consultant Darryl Millar, who represented the school at the

meeting, said extending into the street was the only option for the school.

The school is bordered by the Avon River to one side, and sur-rounded by public roads.

He said that both the cycle-way and the school development were projects being done for the community, and he hoped the city council would take the time to make sure the projects aligned.

But deputy mayor Vicki Buck

said it was a safety issue for stu-dents cycling to the school.

“I think their safety matters. I’m happy that we work with the school around alternatives, but I’m not happy to delay these cycleways, now, or later, or at any time.”

City councillor Phil Clearwa-ter agreed.

“There’s huge traffic congestion problems on Riccarton Rd, and the cycleway here will make trav-elling to school safer for cyclists.

We cannot possibly delay this.”School board of trustees chair-

man Mike Lay said that the school fully supported the con-cept of the cycleway.

But he said that the proposed changes at the school, particular-ly around the entrances and ex-its, could cause safety issues for cyclists using the new cycleway.

He said that the school would go ahead with its plans.

“We’ll just have to proceed with our planning, and should there be a change in entrances and exits the council will have to understand that it may compro-mise the cycleway – and we don’t want that to happen.”

City councillor Yani Johanson said the council needed to make sure that staff continued to work with the school.

No delay to cycleway plans

•From page 1The St Albans Pool was taken

over by the city council in 2002, and demolished in 2006. The pool was more than 70 years old

at the time.Ms Watson said the key to

the project would be getting the groups together to create one united plan.

“If groups are not connected, it has no momentum, but when you get people working togeth-er that’s when things can really start to happen.”

So, tell me what you’re working on at the moment?

I’ve got an exhibition I’ll be hanging on Friday, out in Darfield. The exhibition will be a mix of paintings and sculp-ture. I’ll have five pieces in it from a bit of series, alongside the work of two other artists.

Last time we spoke you were looking for an engineer to help with your Duke Kahanamoku wave sculpture. Did you find one?

I’m still looking. I have just been ringing the council about it this morning, and I’ve already rang around a few of my friends, but no one seems to know any-one who could do it.

Why do you need an engi-neer to help with this piece?

Because it is extremely large, and it’s important that it is com-pletely safe.

Have you ever done anything of this scale before?

I’ve never done anything

this large. It will be 8m long, or maybe even nine – we have not confirmed yet, because they haven’t yet confirmed the bud-get. Everything I’ve done so far has been on a volunteer basis.

How long have you worked as a sculptor?

I’ve been sculpting for around 30 years. It was while I was working on a movie, way back then, that I was inspired to start sculpting. At the beginning I al-ways did a lot of clay work, and I went to a pottery studio at Mt Pleasant to learn how to work clay. It was around that time that limestone came into fashion and I did a symposium focusing on limestone.

From then on I have hardly looked back. I love that process of taking away, rather than add-ing as is done in clay. Since then I’ve done a few ice sculptures, and some work overseas – I was sent with some other artists to our sister city in Adelaide to work on some projects there. I’ve done a few council commis-sions, including the large koru out the back of Stanmore Rd, which was quite a big challenge.

You mentioned that you were working on a movie 30 years ago. What were you doing?

My friend, Trixie, was a

costume designer and I was her helper. It really wasn’t my thing.

So what was it that inspired you to start sculpting?

At the time I just wanted to find what I was, and what I wanted to do. The movie is called Illustrious Energy, and in it there were circus scenes with some amazing papier mache sculptures. I absolutely loved them. I had just returned from travelling the world for about 18 months and, looking back at my photos, they were all of sculptures.

Where did you travel? Or would it be easier to list where

you didn’t go?Probably. I went all through

Asia and all through Europe, and I came home via Sri Lanka where I stayed for three months. I made some amazing friendsthere who have remained my friends for life – which is why I went to Hawaii earlier this year, to create a commission for one of my friends.

After all your travel to exotic locations, what is it that keeps you coming back to South New Brighton?

I love living in South New Brighton. It’s being beside the beach.

On the crest of a wave andArtist Bon Suter is about to start work on a giant sculpture near the New Brighton Pier, to mark 100 years since the visit of Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku to the area. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about her work across the world, in movies, on people’s feet and on the dunes of New Brighton.

SCULPTED: Artist Bon Suter at her home in South New Brighton, where she has developed a public sculpture garden extending out onto the dunes.

I’m a country girl – I grew up in Akaroa – so for me its like heaven, like living out in the country. Sometimes I go for wanders down the beach, and I’m the only one out there.

I’ve heard legends of your sculpture garden. How did it start?

I was working on some sculptures with a friend, a deaf and blind guy called Donald Gibson. I needed more space for the work, so I asked council if I could use the sand dunes opposite my house.

Since then I got several well-known sculptures from across the country, and one English man too, to create sculptures there, and I’ve developed a garden around them.

Do you get a lot of visitors stop by to see it?

I do get quite a lot, mainly overseas visitors. Because I’ve chosen to live in south New Brighton, it’s the road to no-where really, not many people come down this way. So it’s mostly tourists.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing?

I would still be working as a reflexologist, or I do like work-ing with people with disabilities as well.

I worked for a few years in nursing, but at that stage I had three little children, so I left nursing and studied alternative health. I started a clinic and worked for several years as a reflexologist, but I was the only

one at that stage and I had so many people coming to me that I burnt myself out. So I decided to massage stone, not people’s feet.

There’s always been that ste-reotype of the starving artist – how difficult is it to actually make a living from your work?

It’s very hard. You never ever get paid enough for the hours you put in to a piece. I’ve al-ready put in about 100 hours for this wave, which I won’t be paid for, and I’ve spent a fair amount on materials. It will probably cost me more than I will get back.

So what is it that keeps you working as an artist?

The thing I love most is just the fact that I am my own boss and can do my own thing completely. I either do some gardening or get out and work on the sculptures. If it’s a lovely day, there’s nothing better than being out on the dunes.

You mentioned your three small children – they can’t be very small anymore. Do they still live nearby?

I’m incredibly lucky, be-cause almost all my family live in South New Brighton. My children have all grown up and

live in South New Brighton, although one is in Bali and one in England at the moment. They both still have houses here and plan to come back. The third had his house here too, but he’s living with me at the moment as his place was badly damaged in the quakes. It’s lovely to have them so close because I have three grandchildren now as well.

What are your favourite things to do in your free time – if you have free time.

I love walking. I love tramp-ing and going out into the bush, and I love wandering the beach.

What about music? Is there anything you particularly like to listen to while you work?

I usually listen to the national radio programmes to be honest. I quite like classical and blues style, and I went to a concert in Lyttelton the other day which was wonderful – I love to listen to music live.

As far as your work goes, is there anything you would still like to create or achieve?

This great big wave that I’ve been commissioned to build is like the ultimate for me. I’m so honoured to be asked to do it, and so happy that I can create something for the community that I love. There are all sorts of challenges to working with con-crete, so this stuff really appeals. And it’s a collaborative project, which means I won’t be doing all the back-breaking work on my own.

Crashes triple at ‘tricky’ roundaboutBY MAX TOWLE

Police are worried about a “tricky” roundabout where crashes have tripled since its redevelopment in 2012.

There were nine crashes at the Halswell Junction Rd and Springs Rd multi-lane roundabout last year after it reopened in December 2012 to accommodate the first stage of the Southern Motorway.

Of those crashes, one resulted in a serious injury, five minor (two in the same crash), and four non-injury.

In the three years before devel-opment, the intersection saw an average of three crashes per year, one being a serious injury.

Police Senior Sergeant and com-munity services manager Peter Stills, who uses the “tricky” round-about every day, said he was wor-ried about its design.

“If you’re heading to town, you often get people turning right to-wards the motorway from the cen-tre lane,” he said.

“The right lane has the option to go straight ahead, so you often get drivers cutting across others.”

Senior Sergeant Stills said at rush hour a glut of drivers covering the lane markings made things difficult.

He said he often saw danger-ous driving.

“People tend to be in a hurry so they would take risks that they otherwise wouldn’t take,” he said.

“It’s a large roundabout so driv-

ers think if they pull out in front of someone, there’s a fair chance they’re going to get seen.

“I would urge all drivers using that intersection to be extra care-ful.”

Traffic flow through the intersec-tion has doubled from 10,800 ve-hicles a day to 21,500 vehicles a day since 2012.

New Zealand Transport Agency highway manager Colin Knaggs

said the intersection would change again when construction work on stage two of the Southern Mo-torway begins in late 2015.

HEALTH

Keep an eye on the early birdsDON’T trust a “morning person” in the evening because people who are perky in the early hours are more likely to be dishonest later in the day, researchers say.

Psychologists from three United States universities study-ing how the internal body clocks of humans influence their ethical choices found that when a person’s energy levels are depleted they find it harder to resist dishonour-able temptations. The converse is true of “night owls”, who are more likely to behave unethically in the morning.

The study, titled The Morality of Larks and Owls, examined the behaviour of 200 people who were given problem-solving tests and games to complete at different times of day without being told that the scientists were actually studying their honesty.

Building on previous research suggesting people become more unethical as the day wears on, the researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University and the University of Washington examined the relationship between energy patterns and ethics.

They focused on the human

circadian rhythm, or body clock, which controls wakefulness and sleep and varies across individuals, meaning that some people natu-rally rise early, while others prefer to stay up late.

One part of the study was a dice-rolling test, which took place either early in the morning (7 to 8.30) or late at night (midnight to 1.30). The participants were asked to roll the dice and report the number they threw, knowing that they would be paid higher cash rewards for higher numbers.

The team found that larks in the night session reported higher rolls than those in the morning session, while owls in the morning session reported higher rolls than owls in the night session.

The results tallied with the hypothesis that morning people would behave less honestly in the evening, when they were most tired, whereas night owls would do so in the morning.

The findings undermined the commonly held idea that early risers are more honest than people who regularly stay up into the early hours. “They cast doubt on the stereotype that evening people

are somehow dissolute,” the re-searchers said.

A summary of findings from the study, published in the Harvard Business Review, said: “In contrast to the assumption that good people typically do good things, and bad people do bad things, there is mounting evidence that good people can be unethical and bad people can be ethical,

depending on the pressures of the moment.”

One of the study’s authors, Sunita Sah of Georgetown Univer-sity, said the findings had implica-tions for businesses that relied on employees working late night and early morning shifts, as it proved that some people would be better at making decisions at certain times of day than others.

The authors also suggested that future research could be carried out to establish whether certain “interventions”, such as a mid-day nap, might redress the balance and make early risers more honest later in the day.

The findings will be outlined in full in the journal Psychological Science later this year. — Indepen-dent

A memorial sculpture of Ha-waiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku near the New Brighton Pier may be ap-proved this week.

The sculpture would com-memorate the visit of Kah-anamoku to New Brighton nearly 100 years ago.

The New Brighton Pier, Foreshore and Promotion Society, hope to see the sculpture completed in time for the centenary.

The Olympic gold medal winning swimmer visited in February 1915, where he gave the first modern surfing demonstration recorded in New Zealand.

Society secretary, Mad-eline Findley, has met with city council staff to discuss the location of the sculpture.

She said that there was a lot of paperwork involved in getting approval for the site and sculpture plans ticked off by an engineer and city council staff.

She hoped that the society could get approval to start the project soon.

“We’re pretty confident that we’ll get the approval soon, and we have the fund-ing in place ready to start.”

New Brighton artist Bon Suter has been commis-sioned to make the sculpture.

It is likely to be about 8m long, crafted from concrete which would be polished to give it a glazed shine.

Local craftspeople are al-ready lined up to help with creating the frame, the con-crete for the sculpture, while several people have volun-teered to sand and polish the piece.

The society hopes to place

it in the grassed area to the south of the pier.

About $25,000 of funding has been set aside by the so-ciety, and further funding is still being sought for light-ing.

Extra funding would allow the society to light the sculp-ture.• 5mins with Bon Suter, page 4 and 5

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGE-MENT OFFICER

Christchurch now has a repu-tation of being the most arson prone city in the country.

That is because of the never-ending deliberate lighting of fires in empty homes.

Last week we saw another in Worcester St, set on fire for the second time and providing a spectacular sight for the locals in the area.

The motives for those set-ting these fires are almost cer-

tainly varied.  But for those of us in the business of trying to halt the flow, the last empty and damaged home to be de-molished cannot come soon enough.

Sadly that may be years away yet.

As always, there were kitch-en fires, in Centennial Ave in Riccarton, Tintern Ave in Avonhead and Halton St in Strowan.

And once again I have to plead with everyone to stay in the kitchen when cooking.  It’s the way to prevent an awful lot

of heartache. When you’re in the factory,

on the trusty forklift with a pallet on the front, and you turn, bumping into the wall, to set off an immediate scream-ing fire alarm it tends to give you a bit of a fright, followed quickly by that “oh my God, what have I done?’ feeling.

This is what happened in a factory in Bromley last week with the pallet bumping into a manual fire alarm which re-sponded by activating.

No real harm.  Just a lot of embarrassment.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says he expects huge par-ticipation in the public engagement process to determine the future use of the Waimak-ariri District’s residential red zones.

The campaign was launched on Wednes-day.

“It’s designed to give as many individu-als and groups as possible the opportunity to put forward their ideas for the land most affected by the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

“This campaign is supported by the key agencies and strategic partners who are working together to rebuild the region, including the Waimakariri District Coun-cil, the Christchurch City Council and Te Rūnanga O Ngāi Tahu.

“Critical issues needed to be considered before this process could begin, including how horizontal infrastructure within the red zones might be repaired, maintained or removed, as well as issues like flood mitiga-tion.

“Waimakariri District is dealing with a far smaller land area than Christchurch city in this respect, so has identified what essential infrastructure is required and is now in a position to get the public engagement pro-cess underway.

“We’re all very keen to hear what ideas the community will contribute.”

Approximately one square kilometre of land has been zoned red in the Waimak-ariri District in Kaiapoi, Kairaki and Pines Beaches.

“While that might not sound like a terribly large space, it amounts to an area the size of 74 rugby fields plus 1800 tennis courts, with a bit of space left over,” Mr Brownlee says.

Waimakariri District Mayor David Ayers says there is considerable interest in the lo-cal community, particularly in the Kaiapoi-Pines-Kairaki area, over the future of our residential red zones.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity to create something positive out of an ex-perience which has been so difficult for so many people.

“It’s great to be getting this community discussion under way,” Mr Ayers says.

Of the 1048 properties red-zoned in the Waimakariri District, owners of just 36 properties have chosen not to accept a vol-untary offer from the Crown.

The broader public engagement campaign to determine the future use of all of the residential red zones across greater Christchurch is called Canvas, and will be run by the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, working with the Waimakariri District Council to co-host the face-to-face engagement with the local community.

People can go to the canvas website – www.canvasredzone.org.nz – to contribute their ideas, find out more about the land and see what others are saying.  There will also be community meetings and other op-portunities to join the conversation.

The campaign will later be extended to of-fer a chance for people to make suggestions on the future use of the residential red zones within Christchurch.

“Christchurch city  has a much bigger job on its hands making decisions about re-maining horizontal infrastructure and flood mitigation,” Mr Brownlee says.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel says this work is a priority for the council.

“We want to ensure residents’ groups and others with an interest in how the red zone is used are fully involved in the public en-gagement and we’re working to get that con-versation started as soon as possible.“We’re anxious to capture the collective commu-nity knowledge that exists about this land so we can ensure it becomes a major asset to the city as a whole,” she says.

Silver Award Winning Mince & Cheese Pie

NEWSFLASHSilver Medal

A silver medal for their mince and cheese pie is the latest honour for family owned Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery. The winners of various categories in the NZ Bakel’s Pie Awards were announced at the start of the week, with the annual pie awards attracting bakers from throughout the country. Over the last 18 years the event has seen Bakers submit their pies for judging in a range of categories, and the winners of each category, whether savoury or sweet are then in the running for the Supreme Pie Award.

The NZ Supreme Pie Awards provide a fantastic competition vehicle to test and match skills against some of the best bakers in the country. With over 5,000 pie entries put forward each year, the Pie Awards remain one of the most prestigious honours that any baker in New Zealand can strive to win. This year’s event once again did not disappoint with a high quality standard of entries competing for 12 coveted category titles and then ultimate NZ Supreme Pie award.

Recognised as the ‘Olympics’ of pie making in New Zealand, the event tests the standards and techniques of baking and pie creation from start to finish. Baker Chad Meehan of Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery believes these are the awards that every bakery in New Zealand needs to enter. “It provides an opportunity to perfect your pie making skills from the creation of the pastry, to the infusion of flavour in the pie filling and taking care with bringing it all together in a pie. It also offers ‘a real hands on’ opportunity for bakeries to take time out of their everyday routine and spend quality time perfecting their products. The win-win equation of this is showcasing top of the line products and ensuring our customers are receiving the ultimate in quality and perfection”.

The iconic bakery on Cranford Street for the last 28 years has seen many changes and rapid business growth. However its reputation has always remained focused on its original philosophy; of utilising only the best ingredients to produce high quality cakes and bakery products, on time, and to client’s specifications. It is not surprising then that for the

last 18 years of the NZ Supreme Pie Awards the business has consistently achieved numerous placing and medals in the various categories. To make the top 10 positions throughout New Zealand in any of the categories is an enormous achievement in itself, states Chad. “This year there was approximately 1,000 pie entries in the mince and cheese category. Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery has been entering the competition for the last 18 years, and every year we aim to enter as many categories as possible with exception of the Seafood Pie section. In that time we have won or been placed more than not. In 2013 our Bacon & Egg Pie won gold. This year due to time constraints with the opening of our new and improved bakery premises (on the same location) it was the first time our business only entered six pie categories.

Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery are proud to continue the tradition of flying the South Island flag in an event that is consistently dominated by North Island entries. It shows New Zealand that down south we are up with the best bakers New Zealand has to offer. In securing the silver medal in the Mince & Cheese category and a 5th placing with our Vegetarian Pie we are proving to our customers that we are always asking ourselves ‘how can we do it even better for the customer’. The educational aspect of the event is that as a baker it provides the opportunity to keep learning your trade. This year, states Chad we were particularly pleased with the care we took to perfect our pastry base. We placed a huge focus

on pie pastry cutting in the tin, pastry height and layering components. This was because with over 8,000 pie entries this year, we knew that judging would be a difficult task, and any defects in pastry or look would automatically eliminate your pie entry from progressing further in the competition.” Originally specialising in decorated cakes for weddings and birthdays, Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery expanded to now operate as a full line bakery with everything sold baked fresh in store. Although the businesses signature product remains decorative cakes they have worked hard to create a unique ‘Kidd’s Cakes experience’ when people walk through the doors. This has been successful with the help of a bakery department that is committed and passionate about producing a high level and variety of products across the board. “It is important to us that our customers always see new and improved products appearing on our shelves, and not getting stale with what we have to offer as the ‘Kidd’s Bakery experience,” states Chad. This has been the main focus from the start when my father Martin first opened the doors, and as the business has grown following in his footsteps myself and my wife, and now my 13 year old son are determined to leave our own unique handprint on the business. The new bakery shop and café has been a huge success and has received overwhelming support from locals”.

The new Bakery and Café is now open, right next door to the previous premises at 254 Cranford Street, St Albans. They have a great café menu that includes a scrumptious ‘BIG Breakfast’, an All Day Breakfast menu and Lunch from 11 - 2pm. The ‘destination’ bakery has plenty of parking behind the shop and for convenience is open from 7am seven days.

So pop in and see the Kidd’s Bakery team and try the delicious range of breads, pies, biscuits and small cakes. Why not treat yourself to one of their delectable gateaux and desserts, or talk to them about your birthday or special event cake, no matter how simple or elaborate, large or small.

GARDENING

Late winter is the season when deciduous magnolias are at their best.

August seems to force these gorgeous flowers to open in a rush. The breathtaking sight of the large, tulip-like blooms perching on bare branches can send passers-by rushing to the nursery to buy something similar.

There are dozens of magnolia varieties, and making a choice can be a formidable task.

The names are confusing so it’s usually easiest to forget nomenclature and just go for the flower you like most (remembering, of course, to check the ultimate height on the label).

Most grow into small trees but, if space is tight, look for one of the shrub-sized star magnolias.

Because magnolias come from cool climates with rich, moisture-holding soil, keeping them happy through hot New Zealand summers can be a challenge. It’s important to take the opportunity to improve the soil as much as possible before planting.

Choose a spot that gets at least half a day’s sun and is pro-tected from strong winds.

Start by clearing grass or ground-covering plants from an area about 1m across, then dig plenty of manure or good compost and some longlasting fertiliser into the soil.

Because magnolias hate being dry, it can also be helpful to add some water-storing crystals into the planting area.

Create a planting hole that’s about twice the size of the pot and approximately the same depth.

Take the plant out of the pot with care (magnolias hate root disturbance) and sit it into the planting hole. Backfill, then water well to settle everything into place. Lastly, spread a layer

of organic mulch. This will keep the soil moist and stop compet-itive grass from growing back over the root area.

Once the magnolia is well established you can plant some bulbs around the base to add extra interest in late winter and spring.

Are you living with the pain of arthritis? If you are, you may benefit from an exercise programme. Appropriate

exercise can result in reduced pain, reduced stiffness, improved function and better overall wellbeing.

Arthritis New Zealand offers both land and water-based exercise classes in Christchurch. These are held at various times and venues across the city.

An exciting new option is the PEDAL Programme. This joint initiative between Arthritis New Zealand and Sport Canterbury is a an eight-week programme combining stationary cycling and skills for people with arthritis affecting their lower limbs. This free programme commences on Monday, August 4. For further information on any of these exercise programmes, phone 0800 663 463 toll- free, or visit www.arthritis.org.nz.

There are 530,000 New Zealanders living with arthritis and it’s one of the leading causes of disability in New Zealand. And while it is certainly true that many older people have arthritis, it is completely misleading to think of arthritis as being an older person’s disease because arthritis can occur to anyone at any age.

Exercisecan relievearthritis pain Numerous studies have shown

Red Yeast Rice (RYR) extract to be an e ective, safer option to maintain healthy cholesterol

levels in most people. RYR has long been used in China as a natural preservative, spice and food colouring and is what gives the famous Peking duck its red colour. It has also been used for over a 1000 years as a common Chinese medicine, especially for digestion and healthy blood circulation.

Although RYR contains a nutrient called monacolin K that is chemically similar to the man-made chemical used in statin drugs, a main di erence is it is a natural substance that the body knows how to handle.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin essential for JOINT HEALTH

JOINT HEALTH

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is also known as degenerative joint disease, and it is characterised by loss

of cartilage and joint degeneration causing pain, joint sti ness and reduced mobility.

An essential building block for cartilage is glucosamine. Healthy joints actually make their own glucosamine, but only produce cartilage when glucosamine is plentiful. Researchers have found taking su cient glucosamine appears to trigger the joints’ own production of glucosamine and formation of new cartilage in many cases. It has also been shown to reduce pain and increase joint mobility better than taking

pharmaceutical pain relievers.Chondroitin sulphate is a natural part of

cartilage and connective tissue. Researchers have found if they supply the body with extra chondroitin from shark cartilage, this helps by supplying nutrients for the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. It acts like a uid magnet, drawing uids and nutrients into the cartilage, enabling it to grow and be replaced.

Glucosamine and chondroitin in su cient amounts appear to have a synergistic a ect and may speed the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue.

RYR has been shown to maintain the good HDL cholesterol, while reducing LDL cholesterol but also very e ective at reducing triglycerides that have been shown to be a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Not only this, but RYR has also been shown to lower lipoprotein(a), a damaging blood fat that can have 10 times greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than high LDL cholesterol.

Statins are known to reduce Co-Q10 levels that can cause muscle pain, aching joints, low energy and cardiovascular problems. As a precaution and for extra cardiovascular protection, CO-Q10 is added to RYR formulas.

GARDENING

Is your garden ready for the summer season?

A bit of quick colour can do wonders, so fill bowls with flowering plants like petunias, geraniums or lobellias.

Container plants are popular but when it comes to potting mix, confusion reigns. Is potting mix really necessary? Won’t soil do the same job?

And is it true that potting mix can be dangerous to handle?

Here are some answers to these common questions:

Why should I use a qual-ity potting mix?

A quality potting mix provides the best grow-ing medium for container plants.

Quality potting mixes, unlike soil, maintain a prop-er balance between holding moisture and draining well.

This means that plant roots can have access to sufficient water without the risk of drowning or dying from lack of oxygen.

Soil, because its texture varies so greatly, isn’t always suitable to use in pots.

Potting mixes can be specifically formulated for special purposes and situations.

This means you can

provide plants with the most suitable conditions for healthy growth.

Tips for re-potting Start by watering thor-

oughly. Invert the pot and carefully remove the plant. Don’t pull it by the stem. Sometimes it helps to roll the pot on its side and squeeze gently to loosen the roots.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to break the old pot or cut it away from the root ball. Remove some of the old potting mix and check the roots for damage or disease. Trim these back to a healthy section.

Re-pot into (preferably) a slightly larger pot. Firm into place but don’t press too hard or you’ll risk damag-ing the roots. Leave at least 2cm of space at the top of the mix for watering. Water thoroughly.

This settles the mix into

place and removes air pock-ets. A few weeks later, feed with a fertiliser that suits container plants.

Don’t use dry, granular fertilisers – such as rose food – because there’s too great a risk of burn-ing roots. Instead stick to controlled release or liquid plant foods.

Is potting mix danger-ous?

Like soil and organic mat-ter, potting mixes may carry any one of a range of benefi-cial or harmful bacteria.

To avoid problems it’s best to follow some simple precautions when handling any of these materials.

Keep potting mix moist, avoid breathing dust from potting mix, wear gloves and, most importantly, wash your hands with soap and water when you’ve finished potting, or working with soil or organic matter.

Top tips for pot mixCOLOUR: Potting mix-es can be specifically formulated for special purposes.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEAT PUMPS

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best

to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy-efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatt of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma) benefits no other heating appliance can offer.

Ducted and multi-systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate-controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin.

This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not eff ective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air everyday. It is, therefore, very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets

the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffi ness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation. However, as winter approaches, we start to shut up houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

Undeniable substance, space and style88 Westminster St, St AlbansAucti on: Thursday, 14 Aug 20144 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 3 living | 2-car-garage | Listi ng number: PI33972

Built just over one year ago, you can grab this opportunity with con dence and move into a basically new home. Built by

certi ed builders and with landscaping designed by Chris Goom, you will know that the platform for success is big and you will not be disappointed.

e house consists of 258m2 facing north on a large 766m2 section with school zoning for Christchurch Boys High, St Albans Primary and Heaton Intermediate. Designed for the family with three living spaces, including a home theatre room with surround sound speakers in the ceiling, so it’s just like you’re at the movies! e kitchen is awesome with a butler’s pantry, induction hob and a convection oven, so as you can see it’s been built with a great budget and features all the extras! Heating is simple and e cient with two separate ducted heat pump systems catering for living and bedroom spaces. Warm throughout were the instructions upon design. For the family, there are four bedrooms plus a study and two executive standard bathrooms with undertile heating. Take my word for it, this is a quality property both inside and out and I recommend your viewing. Having already purchased their next property unconditionally, my sellers are realistic and determined to sell on or even before auction day. Don’t make a mistake and miss this one!

Open Home dates: Sunday, Aug 3, 1pm to 1.30pm, Saturday, Aug 9, 1pm to 1.30pm and Sunday, Aug 10, 1pm to 1.30pm.

See you at the open homes or before for a private viewing. Contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or 027 555 7079.
