director of the northwood fund

This Annual Report serves as a bridge of sorts, connecting the last and current fiscal years. From this vantage point we have a great view of the past and an exciting glimpse of things to come.

We smile with gratitude and applaud those whose names are printed within this booklet because they supported our school in the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Thanks to 572 loyal and generous alumni, trustees, parents and friends, we saw our most successful year yet — raising just over $400,000 in annu-al fund dollars to support the school’s mission. Within these pages are names we know so well, as 48% of them are on our donor honor roll, meaning they have supported the school for five or more consecutive years. One of many highlights was a class against class participation challenge. How did your class fare? (See “Alumni Giving by Class Year” pages.) A special mention goes out to the Class of 1952 with 78% participation!

On June 30, just as our 2014-2015 Annual Fund closed its suc-cessful chapter, we said farewell to Headmaster Ed Good upon his retirement after 18 years as headmaster. We thank him for his countless contributions and for leaving Northwood in such a strong position to move forward.

We welcomed new Headmaster Mike Maher to the helm on July 1. He brings with him incredible enthusiasm and vision

for our beloved school. We hope you will meet him person-ally in the months ahead, either on campus or at one of the planned events in a city near you.

During the summer months we also renamed the Annual Fund the Northwood Fund. Why? Because annual unre-stricted gifts support all that makes Northwood in a word, Northwood. From excellence in the classroom and on the field of competition, to impromptu campfires with friends and teachers and the spectacular views on Mountain Day.

The Northwood Fund encompasses all the distinctive quali-ties of this special place, and its success is directly linked to a strong and vibrant Northwood School. We hope you will feel inspired to invest in your school this year with a gift to the Northwood Fund.

This is an exciting time in Northwood’s history, and we en-courage you to get involved and join in the momentum!

Christine AsheDirector of the Northwood Fund

Board Transitions

We would like to recognize Steve Buckley for his service to Northwood from 1998 – 2015. Thank you, Steve!

Northwood School welcomes Erik Berg ’92 and Hans Carstensen, our newest members of the Board of Trustees, to the September 2015 Board meeting. Welcome!

Page 5: Northwood School Annual Report 2014/15

A generous grant from the J.M. McDonald Foundation at the request of former Northwood Trustee Don McJunkin ’66, made possible several en-hancements to the school’s robotics and computer programming course which debuted in the 2014-2015 academic year. Hummingbird, Lego EV3, and VEX robots, Raspberry Pi micro-computers, one 3D scanner and two 3D printers all await this year’s new and returning students enrolled in both beginning computer programming and advanced applied robotics courses.

“We’re thrilled to expand our offerings in robotics and computer program-ming this year thanks to the McDonald Foundation’s fantastic support,” said Robotics Teacher Jeff Martin. “As a result of this investment, we’ve been able to partner with Clarkson University, allowing students to earn college credit for the higher level applied robotics course — and there’s already a waiting list for both classes.”

Both courses will also take part in community outreach as Northwood School works to develop free workshops for area youth.

201415

Northwood School made a huge impact on my life during those ever developing teenage years. As I look back, nothing changed my life as much as my four years at Northwood. Northwood’s teachers, coaches, student leaders and Headmaster massaged the positive traits they saw in me, developed them and brought them into full maturity to prepare me for college life and a career in business.

Northwood instilled in me a personal core code of values including integrity, honesty, respect for others, spirituality, loyalty, fairness with an open mind, being responsible and accountable for my actions, pursuing excellence, being a good citizen and going the extra mile with extra effort.

Here it is over 55 years later and all of those core values Northwood instilled are still a strong positive part of my life. Over the years, I must have thanked my mother and father a hundred times for sending me to Northwood.

I feel fortunate that I am able to make a bequest intention to an institution that offered me so much. I am honored and proud to be included in Northwood’s Second Century Society.

Scholarships & Endowed Programs

For more information on supporting Northwood’s endowed programs, please contact the Advancement Office at 518.302.5119.

Hockey Scholarship Fund

The Northwood Hockey Scholarship Fund Committee is pleased to announce the 2015-2016 recipients of the Northwood Hockey Scholarship: Eric Strait ’16 of Lake May, Florida and Brooke Boyer ’16 of Raleigh, North Carolina. In hockey and in the school community, Eric embodies a true Northwood student-athlete balancing the demands of a challenging hockey and academic program. Brooke is the ultimate team player, always willing to help her teammates on the ice or off and her stick handling skills and scoring touch make her a threat whenever she’s around the net.

Eric and Brooke join last year’s recipients, Sterling Bray ’15 and Caley Hutchison ’15. The Hockey Scholarship Fund supports student-athletes in continuing their Northwood education and achieving their dreams to play collegiate ice hockey.

Our thanks to the following 2014-2015 donors:

Signet Plaques / Dining Room Chairs / Auditorium Seats

Dining Room chairs, auditorium seats, and signet plaques are part of our restricted annual giving program. We will engrave your name on a brass plate and place it on your chair, seat or plaque.

Dining Room Signet Plaque:

“At Northwood a colorful display of college seals in the dining room emphasizes the college tradition...different colleges to which Northwood [stu-dents] have gone are represented by artistically carved and painted shields bearing the college seals…Not only do they make an appropriate decoration for the dining room, but they exert a silent influence on the students.”—from the 1939 pamphlet Northwood in the Colleges

A special thanks to Mr. Gary Green ’55 a member of the Northwood School Board of Trustees, for providing Northwood with the craftsmanship and materials required to continue this wonderful college signet plaque tradition.

If you wish to see your college or university represented on the Dining Room walls please contact us. Additionally, the following Dining Room Signet Plaques are currently displayed and are still available for sponsorship: University of Pennsylvania

Class of 2015

In what has become an annual tradition, a pizza party hosted by the Advancement Office was held for the senior class at the end of the year. This year we invited Alumni Council President Mike Butler ’81 along with current faculty members who are Northwood alumni to speak with our graduating class. Each alum spoke about becoming Northwood alums and the importance of staying involved with the school. We encouraged them to keep in touch with classmates, update their addresses throughout their lifetimes, attend Northwood events, recommend the school to others (including their own children someday!) and yes, participate in the Annual Fund every year. We requested that each senior bring a dollar to the party – marking their first gift to the Northwood Annual Fund. At the end of the evening members of the Class of 2015 had more dollars than attendees — this class is off to a great start in supporting their school!
