Northwood News Thursday 24 August 2017 Volume 28 From the Headmaster MR P L McAVOY Quote of the Week "Bad News: You're not going to fit in with everyone. Good News: The great ones never do." ~ Author Unknown Radio City Music Hall is an entertainment venue located in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Its nickname is the Showplace of the Nation, and it was for a time the leading tourist destination in the city. Last week, Radio City came to Northwood. The school hall became the centre of the suburb and the show itself a showpiece of the amazing talents that exist within our young people. I speak not only of Northwood boys, but also of the young ladies drawn from the various other schools in the area. As one person said to me on Friday evening, after a blockbuster final show, "this is what it could be like". In a society faced with many challenges, including recent high profile cases of violence involving women, and others involving schools, this was a magnificent example of the synergistic potential that lies within us. A huge vote of thanks to the cast for their dedication and commitment. The result was sold out shows and an expression of engagement and energy that was magnificent to witness. To Mr Scott and his team, take a bow! This week, I have had the pleasure of attending the annual conference of Headmasters of State Boys' Schools, hosted by Kimberley Boys' High School. This is a group of some of the top schools in South Africa, and I am very proud that Northwood is considered to be one of them. The focus of the gathering is around the sharing of experiences and best practice, and while all schools are different, there are many ways in which we can both learn from and provide guidance to other, like-minded institutions. We listened to many inspiring presentations, but the most important - and sobering - message is the huge ongoing responsibility that we have as educators to provide guidance and a sustainable moral compass to the leaders of tomorrow. It is a challenge that we gladly accept. A reminder of the compulsory attendance for all Grade 8 and 9 boys this Saturday. Please be on the covered stands by 11:30 for registration. Boys will be released at approximately 14:00 after the 1st XI soccer game versus Michaelhouse. BACK TO BASICS

National Physiotherapy Back week is coming up in September and once again as physiotherapists we are tryin to raise awareness about healthy spines. As our lives seems to become more sedentary and more time is spent sitting behind

desks with computers and tablets we are reminded about a few basics points to follow:

When studying ensure that you are sitting at a desk or table, do NOT sit and study on the floor or

your bed.

Take regular breaks and have a walk, even if around the house. AVOID sitting in one position for

too long.

Your back should be supported by your chair and your elbows, arms resting on the desk.

Work in good light, this will prevent you from leaning forward and straining your eyes and back.

Make sure both feet are on the floor and not tucked under you, this keeps the back and hips

straight and prevents strain around the knee area.

If your back is aching and not relieved but some movement and gentle stretches, apply some heat

to relax the muscles.

Should lower back pain continue and is not easing up, see a registered physiotherapist for an evaluation and treatment before it get too serious.

10 Things for High-School

Students to Remember

Believe it or not, if you’re in high school right now, you’re at a great point in your life. You have your whole life in front of you. And now is a good time to start thinking about your future, to make some initial plans; just remember that plans can be easily changed. Remember too, that experts predict that the average person will change careers — not just jobs — more than five times in his or her lifetime. Now is the time to pursue your dreams!

And as you start thinking about one or more potential educational and

career paths, here are 10 things to remember in the days ahead.

1. Take time to think about what you like to do; dream and imagine ideal careers.

2. Challenge yourself in high school, but don’t overwhelm yourself.

3. Work, volunteer, or otherwise gain some experience.

4. Get as much education as you can.

5. Talk with as many adults as possible about careers and colleges.

6. Remember that everyone must follow his or her own path in life.

7. People change; don’t feel locked into any college or career now.

8. Don’t let anyone control your dreams and ambitions.

9. It’s never too early nor too late to get organized and begin making plans.

10. Never stop learning… read, grow, and expand your mind.

Final Thoughts about High School

High school is a real transition time for teens, as you move into adulthood and the more adult

issues of work, careers, and college. It should be a time of growth as well as a time of challenge.

Have fun, but get the best education you can so that you are positioned to take advantage of

further educational opportunities… and no matter where you go after high school, never stop

learning and growing.

Sport & Culture

From the Head of Extramurals Mr G. Le Roux [email protected] Deputy Headmaster – Extramurals On Saturday our Rugby 7s teams took part in the Glenwood 7s Tournament. It was an incredibly exciting day of Rugby. Our 1st Team lost narrowly to a very strong DHS team who ultimately won the tournament. Our 1st Team walked away with the plate trophy while our 2nd Team won the bowl. Our u15A team was impressive and managed to beat a tough Glenwood side in the pool stages. In the semi-final against DHS, Northwood achieved a 46-7 victory and met Glenwood again in the final after they had beaten Westville in the other semi-final. It was always going to be tough to beat Glenwood twice in one week but the boys were up for the challenge and managed to come from behind and win the final 26-21. Congratulations to all learners and coaches involved. Congratulation to Matthew Talbot who was selected as a non-travelling reserve for the KZN u19 Soccer team. Northwood is very well represented in the u16 KZN Soccer team with Adam Brun and Liven Singh selected for the A team, and Bruno Bou-Melham selected for the u16B team. Mohammed Abba was selected as a non-travelling reserve. Congratulations gentleman, you can be extremely proud of this achievement. U14 and u15 KZN Soccer teams are yet to be confirmed. Good luck to all learners involved in sport this weekend. A reminder that the Soccer 1st Team game is a compulsory for all Grade 8s and 9s A reminder of the compulsory attendance for all Grade 8 and 9 boys this Saturday. Please be on the covered stands by 11:30 for registration. Boys will be released at approximately 14:00 after the 1st XI soccer game versus Michaelhouse.
