From the Director...
Dear Northwestern Students and Alumni,
The changing economic landscape is clearly challenging.
From first year students to exp erienced alumni, career
preparation is becoming even more complex. However,
we know that students and alumni faring best are those
that engage early and actively in their career planning. To
help support you through this process and become familiar
with our services, the staff of University Career Services is
pleased to provide you with one of our key career resources,
the Career Guide.
Whether your individual next steps include choos-
ing a major, relating your academic work to future career
options, seeking an internship, planning for graduate study,
obtaining a professional position, or even changing or
advancing your career, you should find the resources in this
guide useful. The Career Guide is most valuable when used
as a complement to the full array of services, programs,
and special events offered through UCS. To make sure
you are fully informed of all our services, we invite you to
register with CareerCat at www.northwestern.edu/careers.
Registering with our office will provide you access to job
postings, online resources, walk-in hours, special events,
and more. You can also visit us at our main office,
620 Lincoln or at our Career Lab in the Core Library, 2N.
University Career Services at Northwestern University
seeks to help you bridge excellence in education with
excellence in professional opportunity. To accomplish this
task, UCS is comprised of a staff of experienced career
professionals ready to assist you. We have a long tradition
of working closely with employers, academic units, and the
Northwestern community in this endeavor.
We want to thank our employer partners who helped
provide financial support for this publication and seek to

valuable career resources for your continuing professional
development. On behalf of the entire UCS staff, we invite you
to come to UCS. Visit us early and vi sit us often!

I started to use UCS as a resource as a
freshman when I was considering changing
my academic path. Initially, I thought that
the advisors would provide me with all of
the answers in trying to find internships and
determine career plans, but I soon realized
that it would take work on my end as well.
When I actually followed through with the
tools and assessments that my UCSadvisors provided me with, I was successful.

Hello, my name is Adam Jenkins and Im a senior in Psychology at
Northwestern University. I saw a job listing on your website for an
entry level Career Advisor position and I wanted to share with you
a little about my experience. Last summer, I interned with University
Career Services. Because of my ability to communicate with students
and understand their needs, they asked me to stay another quarter
to work with them this fall. My experience at UCS reaffirmed my
interest in obtaining a position as Career Advisor for a university.
I was hoping you would tell me more about the new programming
initiatives I saw listed on your website.
Learning how I can be a resource for my peers is truly gratifying.
After I help them look over their resume, for example, they always tell me
how much better it looks and how much they appreciate my help.
As a Career Ambassador, I help students highlight their potential to employers and it feels great
to help my friends with such an important task.

Since my freshman year at North-

me achieve my career goals and excel
beyond my wildest dreams. With
their guidance and advice, I had the
opportunities to interface one-on-one
with employers and interns at two
of the most well known firms in the
country in both the tech and finance
space. I am excited to report that I
will be starting my career at a top
tech firm next year.

Regardless of how trivial an experience might seem to you at the time, every job results in the acquisition of skills which are transferable to
work settings. Follow these easy steps to better identify and express your skills to potential employers:
[1] Make a list of each experience youve had, whether
it was a volunteer position, a full-time job,
an internship, or a student organization role.
Picture in your mind what you did on a typical day,
during a busy week.
[2] Use the Power Verbs list to brainstorm all of the
skills you employed during this day.[3] Select three to five of the words you feel
best convey your responsibilities.
[4] For each verb, ask yourself Who, What, When,
Why and How? to expand upon your statement.
[5] Whenever possible, quantify the impact your
work had on the customer, process, or overall
organization. What difference did your work make?
What were your accomplishments?
