JEREMY KIPPCOLLEGE: Bloomsburg UniversityTENURE: First Year

Northwestern named Jeremy Kipp as its Director of Swimming & Diving on May 11, 2018.  “We are elated to welcome Jeremy to Northwestern,” said Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Dr. Jim Phillips. “After a rigorous, comprehensive, national search, there was no doubt about the right fit for our University. This new structure, with a singular leader overseeing both our men’s and women’s teams, is one we are confident will streamline the Wildcats’ development into the championship program we all believe it can be. Jeremy’s resume speaks for itself with back-to-back conference championships and three-straight coach of the year awards. We are excited to watch the impact he will make on the world-class experience of our young men and women.”  Kipp brings a depth of experience and success with him to Evanston. The three-time Mountain West Coach of the Year has been at the helm of the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program since the 2016 season, and led the Broncos to back-to-back conference titles in 2017 and 2018. Away from the pool, Kipp established a culture of success in the classroom with more than 100 academic all-conference honorees and consecutive perfect-1,000 Academic Progress Rates.  “Today is an exciting day for me and for my family,” said Kipp. “The opportunity to join a university like Northwestern, one of the top institutions in the nation and a founding member of the Big Ten Conference, is a humbling honor. I am so thankful for the Boise State student-athletes, coaches and staff I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the last three years, and extremely proud of what we accomplished together. Thank you to President Schapiro, Dr. Jim Phillips and the entire search committee for their consideration and trust. Suzanne, Jonathan, Patrick and I are thrilled to join the Wildcats family.” During Kipp’s three-year tenure at Boise State, the Broncos broke 16 school records, captured 26 conference titles and boasted 120 all-conference athletes. In 2017, he guided the team to a 36th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the program’s best mark in history. Boise State was one of 16 programs nationally to qualify four or more relay teams for the NCAA Championships in 2016 and 2017.

Prior to arriving in Boise, Kipp spent eight seasons, three as an assistant and five as the head assistant, at the University of Southern California coaching both the men’s and women’s teams. Both programs finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships from 2011-15, and he helped the men of Troy capture the 2015 Pac-12 title, its first since 1979. Kipp signed Top-5 men’s and women’s recruiting classes for seven straight years at USC and mentored 107 All-Americans and 38 individual NCAA Champions.  Before taking the job at USC, Kipp spent eight seasons (1999-2007) on the men’s and women’s swimming staffs at UC Santa Barbara, where he handled the middle distance and stroke groups, producing numerous NCAA Championships qualifiers. More than 20 of his Gaucho swimmers went on to U.S. Nationals, while one earned NCAA All-America honors.Kipp also has national and international coaching experience, mentoring 25 Olympic qualifiers who have gone on to earn 17 medals. After spending time with the Polish National Team at the 2013 European Short Course Championships, he coached two years with the Austrian National Team in 2010-11. There, he was the personal coach for Olympian and Austrian team member Markus Rogan at the 2011 Short Course European Championships where he won gold in the men’s 200 IM, as well as at the 2011 Short Course World Championships in Dubai, Arab Emirates, where Rogan won bronze in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke. Kipp also served as the personal coach for Oussama Mellouli (Beijing Olympic Gold Medalist in the 1500m) of the Tunisian National Team at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy, where he won seven gold medals as he prepared for the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy. Kipp also spent two weeks on the isle of Sardinia prepping Mellouli for the 2009 World Championships where he won a bronze, silver and gold in the men’s 400m, 800m and 1500m, respectively. Kipp competed collegiately at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania from 1994-98, serving as team captain during the final two years. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English. Kipp later earned a Master’s of Science in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University in 2003. Kipp and his wife, Suzanne, have two sons, Jonathan and Patrick.

A standout away from the pool as well, Robinson claimed first-team Academic All-Big XII recognition in each of her final three seasons and was tabbed Texas Women’s Swimming Team Academic MVP as a junior and senior. As a senior, she was named first-team ESPN The Magazine All-District VI and second-team Academic All-American, and was the Big XII nominee for NCAA Female Athlete of the Year. COLLEGE: Arizona TENURE: First Year

Northwestern Director of Swimming and Diving Jeremy Kipp announced the addition of assistant coach Jake Tapp to the Wildcats’ staff. Tapp, a former Olympian and world-record holder, comes to Northwestern after serving as an assistant coach at Wisconsin for the past two seasons. During his time in Madison, Tapp helped guide the women’s program to a pair of top-20 finishes at the NCAA Championships, while assisting the men’s side to a top-20 finish in 2017. Last season, the Wisconsin women placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships with five Big Ten records and a pair of individual champions. The Badgers had three All-American performances and three Honorable Mention All-American honorees at the 2018 NCAA Championships. In his first season on the UW coaching staff, Tapp helped both the Badgers men and women to impressive finishes. The Wisconsin women took third place at the 2017 Big Ten Championships for their best conference showing since 2005, while the men claimed fifth place to secure a third-consecutive top-five Big Ten finish — a feat the program had not achieved since doing so from 1999 to 2004. Tapp joined the Badgers after spending the 2015-16 season as an assistant at New Mexico, including a stint as interim head coach of the Lobos, who sponsor only women’s swimming and diving. Prior to that, Tapp spent two seasons as an assistant at IUPUI as he transitioned into the coaching ranks. A native of Langley, British Columbia, Tapp enjoyed a successful career on the international stage, highlighted by representing his native Canada in the 100-meter backstroke and 400-meter medley at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Tapp was part of a Canadian quartet that broke the short-course world record in the 400 medley relay in 2009 and still holds national records in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke.

Tapp competed collegiately at Arizona, where he helped the Wildcats claim the NCAA team title in 2008. Individually, Tapp twice finished as NCAA runner-up, taking second in the 200-yard backstroke as a junior in 2009 and in the 100-yard backstroke as a senior in 2010. A team captain for the Wildcats as a senior, Tapp finished his collegiate career with 13 All-America honors and still holds Arizona’s school record in the 200 backstroke, at 1:38.67. He graduated with a degree in business administration.

Northwestern Director of Swimming and Diving Jeremy Kipp named Andrew Hodgson an assistant coach on June 28, 2018. Hodgson joined Chicago’s Big Ten Team after serving the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. The former All-American at Florida State spent the four years prior to his time with the Hokies as the head swimming coach at the New Trier Swim Club in local Northfield, Illinois. “I am so excited for Andrew’s homecoming to the Chicago area as a member of our staff,” Kipp said. “As a former senior chair of Illinois Swimming, Andrew is bringing a wealth of local club swimming knowledge to the Wildcats and as a former head club coach, we know that he is not afraid of being in the trenches. Andrew was a standout at Florida State as an ACC champion and as a member of the British National Team for over seven years, brings international experience to OUR NU pool deck. He is an outstanding guy and a perfect fit for our program.” “I am so thrilled to be joining the Northwestern family,” said Hodgson. “The first time I met Jeremy and the staff I knew this was the place for me. Being at one of the best universities in the world, in one of the premier locations in the world, is a dream come true. I can’t wait to start working with the student-athletes and continuing to build the legacy of Northwestern swimming and diving. Go ‘Cats!” As an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, Hodgson helped mentor 19 All-Americans and saw the Hokies break 17 school records. During his time with the New Trier Swim Club, Hodgson qualified multiple swimmers for the USA Junior Nationals and led the team to a top-10 finish at the NCSA Junior Nationals. Hodgson was a five-time NCAA All-American, a two-time ACC champion in the 200 backstroke and broke an ACC and school record. His time of 1:41.11 in the 200 back as a senior in the NCAA Championships broke the school and conference record.

As a volunteer assistant at Florida State, Hodgson coached swimmers in the middle distance freestyles and backstrokes. The England native swam professionally after graduation and placed ninth in 200 backstroke at the 2009 European Championships. He was ranked 24th in the world at the time of his retirement from swimming.

DIVINGCOACH

Alik Sarkisian was named Northwestern’s head men’s and women’s diving coach prior to the 2006-07 season, and just completed his ninth year at the helm of the diving corps. Sarkisian joined the Wildcats after five years as the Director and Head Coach at the USA Diving Regional Training Center. Sarkisian  was instrumental in the success of of Olivia Rosendahl, Northwestern women’s first-even diving national champion. Rosendahl won the platform event in 2017 and repeated in 2018. She has earned six All-America honors during her career. In 2018, she was named Northwestern women’s  first-ever Big Ten Diver of the Year.  Sarkisian was also named Big Ten Women’s Diving Coach of the Year for his work with Rosendahl.   In his first season at the helm, Sarkisian coached men’s divers Ryan McIntosh and Alex Kiaie to scoring performances in all three diving events at the Big Ten Championships. His divers from both squads qualified for NCAA Zone Diving competition. On the women’s side in 2007-08, fifth-year senior Leanne Dumais returned from a medical hardship season to reach the finals on both spring boards for the first time in her career. She became the first NU women’s diver ever to finish in the top-eight in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the same Big Ten Championships. After finding success with his inherited student-athletes, Sarkisian quickly learned the recruiting ropes in his first collegiate job, as well. He signed Felicitas Lenz to the women’s team for the 2009-10 season; Lenz participated in the 2009 AT&T National Diving Championship in addition to racking up three top-10 finishes at the Speedo Junior National Diving Championship during the summer of 2009. Lenz would go on to win All-Big Ten honors on the 10-meter platform in 2012, becoming the first Wildcat to do so since 2006. She qualified for NCAA Zones in all four of her seasons, racked up 30 total career event victories and was a multiple-time Big Ten Diver of the

Week. Sarkisian recruited Lenz’s younger sister, Cosima, to Northwestern as part of that 2010-11 class, and she immediately gave the Wildcats two scoring threats in every event. In the 2013-14 class, Sarkisian inked a trio of men’s diving with impeccable credentials including Starz Diving teammates Andrew Cramer and Reed Dillon, both Junior National qualifiers. Cramer quickly broke Northwestern’s diving records in the 3-meter and platform events in his freshman year. Sarkisian owns a wealth of head coaching experience. He began his coaching career as the USSR National Team coach from 1980-1990 before becoming the National Team coach in his native Armenia from 1991-93. He then moved to the United States where he was an assistant with Rose Bowl Aquatics in Pasadena, Calif., from 1993-98 before assuming the head coaching position with the Trojan Dive Club and the assistant coaching job at USC from 1998-2001. Sarkisian has earned a number of coaching accomplishments within USA and international diving, most notably serving as the USA National Team Coach for the 2003 and 2005 Pan-Am Games. He has coached at numerous FINA Grand Prix events and Olympic trials and training camps. In 1996, he was Armenia’s National Team coach at the Atlanta Olympic Games. In 2008, Sarkisian served as Team USA’s head coach at the Grand Prix meet in Moscow, Russia. He also was a selector at the U.S. Olympic Selection Camp for the 2008 Beijing Games and a judge at the 2008 Olympic Trials. In 2013, Sarkisian was selected as the head coach of the 12-member USA Diving contingent at the World University Games in Russia. A 13-time Armenian national champion, Sarkisian competed internationally for the USSR. He graduated in 1980 with professional level training in sports science and education from the USSR State University of Physical Education in Yerevan, Armenia.

NORRIS AQUATICS CENTER

The Dellora A. and Lester J. Norris Aquatics Center includes a 750,000-gallon, 50-me-

ter-by-25-yard pool with movable walls that run on a track system, enabling the pool to be custom-fitted. The complex, which includes an innovative heat recycling system, also features an electronic scoreboard and seating for 800 spectators. The facility also includes the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and the Ivan Combe Tennis Center, located adjacent to the Norris Aquatics Center. The sports pavilion features a jogging track, three basketball courts, four racquetball and three squash courts, a weight room and lounge areas. The tennis center features six indoor tennis courts. Large windows on the running track provide a view of picturesque Lake Michigan. Large windows also overlook the pool from a workout room and a treadmill area in the main Sports Pavilion area. The facility also features an outdoor patio and sundeck that overlook the beach and Lake Michigan. With such easy access to Northwestern’s North Beach, Wildcat swim-mers are able to exercise and do dryland activities in the sand. The aquatics center has been the site of numerous competitions, including the United States Swimming Elite National training camp and 1999’s Swim Meet of Champions featuring the USA National Team against the Big Ten All-Stars. The facility also is the home of NASA Wildcat Aquatics, an age-group swimming club with youth members all the way up to Masters competitors.
