!Buffing Did It 'Petoskey Stones'Went to MarketM ANY TOURISTS, browsing. in gift shops in the north thisseason will pause before greyish, polished stones, their surfacesmarked with shell-like rings.'They are in various sizes, some:small, some large, some cu t in:shapes of hearts and crosses.

These are "Petoskey . Stones,"so called because of the hugenumbers found in the Little Traverse Bay area years ago.

Th e Petoskey Stone is a fossilhundreds of thousands of yearsold and the small rings whichgive it such distinction are theremains ol fpre - historiclife - principally marinel i fe- that lived in the water s in thissection.Th e stone isa limestone-like material whichlying dr y on a beach, a p p e a r ~

silvery. Indians discovered thatwhen these were dipped in waterthey .darkened and displayed thefossil patterns prominently.Due to the constant poundingof the water, th e stones werewashed to the beach in roundform, some flat. A few heavierspecimens, almost chunky, havebeen discovered. Constant rubbing by hand made the stonesshine.

Wheel Is BetterBy the bushel baskets thesewere gathered in ,th e ol d days

an d it was discovered that, withproper burnishing on a grindingwheel, they could be made to retain th e identical luster theyachieved when wet.

These ar e the stones offeredfor sale in the area. Craftsmenlearned that the stone could bedrilled an d cut. The d'iscoveryresulted odd-SJhaped stonescoming from th e wheels. Heartshaped stones were produced tohang on gold neck chains. Crosses, too, were produced.Number DiminishingDuring the past several years, however, the quantity of Petoskey

Stones found on beaches has diminished. Although a few ma y bediscovered by watchful wanderers they do no t exist in anythinglike their former numbers.Pocket pieces, bracelet charmspaper weights and small o r n a ~ments are thei,r chief uses.

Island ONE OF THE STRANGEST dramas in Michigan's long an d colorfulhistory took pl ace on Beaver Island, th e largest of th e isles in th eBeaver Archipelago in upper Lake Michigan an d no w a part of Charlevoix County (See Map).IT WAS ON THIS Island on July 8, 1850 that Ja mes J. Strang wa scrowned King to b e ~ i n a reign that is without parallel in Americanhistory.TH E STRANGE STORY BEGAN in 1847 when Strang an a fourcompanions went to Beaver Island from Voree, Wis., headquarters ofth e eastern branch of the Mormons. This sco uting party sought theisland as a place to li ve an d worship without interference. Theycoveted its rich fishmg waters and its abundance of game an d Strangdreamed of empire. Returning to Voree, he summoned his followersto visit the ne w land. As winter roared its wa y across the big lakeit locked on th e island a Mormon population of 18; five me n an d 13women an d children. Th e following winter the Mormons numbered62, of which 17 were men. By th e summer of 1849 th e Mormons we rearriving in la rge numbers. .FOLLOWING HI S CORONATION, feeling against King Strangra n high and part icularly among fishermen from th e mainland who

resented th e in - trusion in theseabundant waters. King Strang ruledwith an iron hand. He laid ou t thetown of St . James, still th e only mu-nicipality on th e island. He forbadethe use of liquor, tobacco an d tea.He ordered hi s fol- lowers to pa y atithe of all they received or pro-duced or and failure to pa ywa s punishable flogging.

KING STRANG TOLD hi s followers he ha d received divine in structions to practice polygamy an d he took several wives an d orderedhis folfowers to do likewise. He ordered women on th e island to discard long skirts and wear knee-length skirts or bloomers. His tyrannical attitude brought open re bellion . He was arrested byth e Federal Government. Charges included the theft of timber, tampering with the mails and counterfeiting money. No witness couldbe found to testify against him in St . James and the trial wa s takento Detroit. He aided hi s ow n defense with an eloquent .address an dhe and 12 other defendants were acquitted.KING STRANG'S SUCCESS SENT hi m in to politics. He wa selected to th e State House of Representatives. He served well an dhis followers, also mindful of their power, wo n political control ofEm met County and moved th e county seat to St . James, spreadingresponsible positions among their own numbers.IN 1853 TH E power-drunk Mormons attempted to subpoena threefishermen at Pine River (now Charlevoix) fo r jury duty on the island.Th e me n at Pine River refused.
