UI claims and labor force information (including unemployment rate) available through March 2015. First quarter is often characterized by highest seasonal unemployment rates and highest number of UI claims. Unemployment insurance claims declining each year since 2009. Unemployment Insurance claims in January - March 2015 were lower than the number observed in 2014. After reaching a peak in 2010, the unemployment rate has been on a slow and steady descent. In the first quarter of 2015, a total of 6,198 Northwest residents filed new UI claims and 607 exhausted regular UI benefits. In the first quarter of 2014, the numbers were 7,637 and 808 respectively. The average number of continuing UI claims in the first quarter of 2015 was 4,367--down from 5,571 in the first quarter of 2014. In March 2015, the not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 6.2 percent. Compare to 7.4 percent in March 2014. The total civilian labor force increased by 3,300 or 1.7 percent over the year.
Northwest counties share a common regional labor market, but have recovered differently from each other. In March 2015, Skagit County had the highest unemployment rate (7.0 percent), followed by Island County (6.1 percent) and Whatcom County (5.9 percent). San
