The Irish Cancer Societyand Dell launch DaffodilDay 2015 in Mayo.

Daffodil Day, supported byDell, will take place in Mayoon Friday March 27th 2015.This year marks the 28thDaffodil Day, Ireland’s longestrunning and biggestfundraising day. The Societyannounced a growth in cancerincidence that is sure to havea direct impact on its services– increasing the need for thepeople in Mayo to supportDaffodil Day so they canreach their fundraising targetof €3.5 million for 2015.

Speaking at the launch ofDaffodil Day, JohnMcCormack, Chief ExecutiveOfficer, Irish Cancer Societysaid, “Every family in Mayo istouched by cancer, and thesenew figures confirm thatcancer rates are growing. Ascancer is increasing so are ourefforts to fight it. As thenational cancer charity we

are working harder to ensurethat every family in need ofsupport in Mayo has access toour services. To meet theincreased demand for help asmore people get and survivecancer we need to raise evenmore money this year onDaffodil Day.”

Funds raised on DaffodilDay by thousands ofvolunteers across Ireland godirectly to fund the work ofthe Society across support, prevention, research andadvocacy. Night Nursing is oneservice funded by DaffodilDay. Last year the Society wasable to fulfil 96 per cent ofrequests for a night nurse.Seventy Five percent ofcancer patients wish to die athome surrounded by family, yet only 25% get to do so. TheIrish Cancer Society providesthe only night time careservice for cancer patients intheir own homes. In 2014 theSociety’s nurses provided 499

nights of care to 78 patientsin Mayo and this service isfully funded by the people ofMayo who consistentlysupport the work of theSociety.

Mr McCormack continued,“We won’t give up until everyperson affected by cancer inMayo has the support theyneed and we need thesupport of everyone in Mayoto make this possible. Weknow our volunteers won’tgive up, we know Dell – ourlead partner – won’t give upand we need every person inMayo to join us in this fight. We still have some way to goto fully support patients whowill die from their cancer. Wewon’t give up until we reachthat future without cancer –and I know the Irish publicwon’t either.”

It’s vital that Daffodil Dayreaches its ambitiousfundraising target of €3.5million in order to continue to

provide and expand thisservice and others. TheSociety and Dell, lead partnerfor Daffodil Day, are callingon the public to help supportthe campaign on Friday 27thMarch and ask people tovolunteer, organise or donateon CallSave 1850 60 60 60 orvisitwww.cancer.ie/daffodilday.

Also speaking at the launch,Liam Halpin, GeneralManager, Dell Ireland said,“Dell employs 2,300 people inIreland and we havecampuses in Cherrywood inDublin, in Limerick and inCork. Each and every one ofthese employees have joinedthe Daffodil Day volunteeringarmy in one way or anotherand it’s been great to see themomentum across the threecampuses grow over theyears. This is our fifth year aslead partner of the DaffodilDay campaign. We’re lookingforward to a great day offundraising to ensure thecontinued services providedby the Irish Cancer Society topeople around the country.”

Continued from front pageNobody is saying there is an easy answer to all of this. The HSE, after its

predecessor (the Health Boards) is still a monolith of sorts, with major institutionalproblems embedded and, admittedly, a nightmare for those charged to manage andadminister it. It’s not just a matter of finance either. But when we have nowreached the stage that we all dread the prospect of having to avail of the state’shealth services it is time for some radical changes.

The price of an averagethree-bed semi Mayorose by 15.15% in 2014,

according to a national surveycarried out by Real EstateAlliance.

The Real Estate Alliance

Average House Indexconcentrates on Ireland'stypical stock home, thethree-bed semi, giving anaccurate picture of theproperty market in towns andcities countrywide.

The average three-bed semidetached house in Mayo nowcosts €190,000, with themarket staying flat in Q4 fromSeptember to December, andhouses now taking threeweeks to sell, down from sixweeks in June 2014.

REA Olivia Needham in Mayoare predicting a rise of 5% inprices in 2015, following theending of the uncertaintyover the Central Bank’smortgage deposit rules.

Nationally, the averagethree-bed semi now costs€184,713, the latest REAsurvey has found – a rise of2.63% on the Q4 figure of€179,981.

While every county in theState showed an increase inthree-bed semi prices, themarket slowed down in theDublin area betweenSeptember and December2014 (Q4) with one arearegistering a -6.67% drop inprices.

While semis in Dublinrecorded a 21.66% increaseover the year, the biggest risewas in the commuter countiesand large cities such as Corkand Galway.

Property in what is nowtermed Tier Two rose by26.24% from €157,824 to€199,235.

And while the Dublinmarket slowed to just an0.89% increase in Q4, and the

commuter counties rose by3.42%, the biggest upswingcame in the rest of thecountry (or Tier Three), whichsaw a rise of 3.92% – the firsttime that rural Ireland hadsurged ahead in the figures allyear.

“Our survey shows that inall areas of Dublin, parts ofCork City, Galway City, NorthWicklow and Kildare, theprice of the average semidetached house exceeds theCentral Bank’s new thresholdof €220,000 at which bankscan lend 90% of the value,”said Real Estate Alliance CEOPhilip Farrell.

“However, other parts ofWicklow, Kildare, Louth andMeath all offer averagehousing under that limit forthose looking to buy in thecommuter belt withaccessibility to Dublin.”

The biggest change inbuying habits in 2014 hasbeen the return of the banksto the marketplace with theamount of cash transactionsdropping from an average of66% in December 13 to 44% inDecember 2014.

Real Estate Alliance (REA) isIreland’s leading propertygroup of Chartered Surveyorswith over 50 branchesnationwide, comprising manyof the country’s longest-established auctioneers andestate agents.

IT may have been highlightedelsewhere but the story ofhow a 7-month-old foal was

found in Sligo last week in suchan appalling conditiondeserves further mention toremind us of how cruel someof us can be to defencelesscreatures. The unfortunateanimal was found withextensive neck wounds andabandoned on waste-ground inSligo town earlier this week.

Concerned members of thepublic spotted the foal andcalled the ISPCA on Monday oflast week and inspector KarenLyons found the young colt in agreat deal of pain. Both sidesof his neck had massivepuncture wounds which werebadly infected and he wasclearly in an “extremelyweakened state” the charitysaid.

“He was just standing

listlessly on his own in themiddle of a kind of car park, what was an old car park,”according to Lyons. “There wasa rope hanging out of him anda head collar on him. He wasvery weak – he must have beenin an awful lot of pain and hewas a bit scared when weapproached him but I don’tthink he had the energy to govery far.”

The foal, later named

Chance, was taken forveterinary treatment where itwas found that the wounds onhis neck, thought to be over aweek old, were onlycentimetres from thevertebrae in his neck. It ishoped that the vertebrae willnot become infected but hehas a long road to recoveryahead of him now.

Lyon’s said he is in goodspirits and every day hiswounds are improving.

It’s unbelievable how quicklythey heal once they get theright treatment.

She said it is not known whatcaused the horrific injuries thefoal sustained. It is possible anaggressive stallion attackedhim or that something orsomeone punctured the colt’sneck. Unfortunately, littleChance was not micro-chippedand local enquiries have notrevealed an owner. Lyonsappealed to anyone in the areawho recognises him to contactthem in confidence on 1890515 515.

If his owner cannot befound, it is hoped Chance canbe re-homed, once he is fullyhealed.

“He has a long way to go butwe hope that Chance will finda home,” Lyons said. “He’s alovely little blue and whitefella, he is very cute and heseems to have a goodtemperament”

Seven-month-old foal foundin shocking condition

There was widespreadsadness in Killala andthroughout the North-

west last week with theannouncement of the death ofSean Hannick, renowned for hiswork in the development ofhis local area and a championfor development in the westgenerally. He was aged 71.

The well-known industrialist

and businessman passed awayon Friday, January 30th in theGalway Clinic and was, perhaps, best known as theChairman of the Council for theWest and instrumental in theestablishment of the westernDevelopment Commission.

A native of Killala, MrHannick was a tirelessadvocate for development in

the north Mayo village and wasselected as Mayo Person of theYear in 1998. He was a memberof the Council for the Westsince its formation in 1994, andbecame the organisation’schairman in 2002.

Paying to tribute to MrHannick, the Most ReverendChristopher Jones, Bishop ofElphin, and Bishops’Representative on the Councilof the West said at every leveland in every role he held, ‘hemade an enormous difference’.

“He brought employment toKillala. He employed people inKillala himself. He was thedriving force behind thedevelopment of the KillalaCommunity Centre.

“He fought for improvedfacilities and infrastructure innorth Mayo, and then hebroadened his campaigns to allof Co Mayo and to the west ofIreland in general. To Seán, theemphasis was always onprogress and improvement – itwould be impossible to list allof the many worthwhile issuesand campaigns he supporteddown through the years.

“Many people have reason tobe very grateful to Seán for allhe did, directly or indirectly. But he was never one to seek

the limelight or to chaseaccolades: Seán was a quiet, humble man, a great friend toall of us in Council for the Westand someone we will missgreatly. He was a truechampion of the west,” hesaid.

Mr Hannick was one of theleading figures in theestablishment of the WesternDevelopment Commission andto obtain Objective One statusfor the west. He was a memberof the National Council of ISME(Irish Small and MediumEnterprises) and the WesternDevelopment Leader Company, and served for two terms onthe Western DevelopmentCommission board. He wastreasurer of Killala CommunityCouncil and a member of manyother community developmentorganisations, includingextensive involvement in KillalaGAA club.

He is survived by his wifeDeirdre; sons John, Rory, Conorand Marcus; grandchildrenSarianna, Farayah, and twinsÓrna and Seán; daughters-in-law Neasa, Caroline andYolanda; sister-in-lawMargaret; brother-in-law Pat;relatives, neighbours andfriends.

Mayo is attracting aboveaverage interest from UKproperty buyers trying to

secure their dream homes inIreland, according to RealEstate Alliance.

The strength of sterling hasseen enquiries about Irishproperty sales to UK-basedpurchasers increasesignificantly in the past twomonths, with REA Needham inWestport reporting a 25%increase in UK enquiries.

A survey of REA membersshows that enquiries from theUK have increased by 13% onaverage to agents outside ofDublin in the past two months.

In fact, one REA agent inBantry has reported a 50% risein recent enquiries from theUK.

There has been acorresponding 25% annualincrease in enquiries aboutReal Estate Alliance propertieslisted on top UK site

rightmove.co.uk.Now Irish property vendors

are being given the chance tocash in on this mini-boom byregistering for the Alliance’supcoming London PropertyExhibition.

REA are bringing thousandsof properties to London, givinga host of UK buyers the chanceto browse in comfort and talkto the experts on the ground.

The exhibition takes place inthe Millennium GloucesterHotel and Conference Centrein central London on SaturdayMarch 21. The exhibition willbe a comprehensive one-stopshop for potential propertypurchasers with legal andfinancial experts joining anetwork of Real Estate Allianceagents from throughoutIreland, all with uniqueproperties to show.

“The average UK home nowcosts €236,635 whereas inIreland it is close to €180,000,

and the strength of sterling ismagnifying this,” said OliviaNeedham.

“UK buyer interest ismanifesting itself differently tothe existing Irish market in anumber of ways, with bigsurges in interest in manyundervalued rural counties andalso scenic and coastallocations. “This presents manyvendors with the opportunityof achieving better prices dueto interest outside of thenormal marketplace.

“Rural properties in the UKcost an average of €67,000more than urban properties –quite the opposite of the Irishmarket. “UK buyers are beingpriced out of rural propertiesin their own country, so formany their only chance of an‘escape to the country’ is amove to our country.

“We are also seeing amarked upsurge in UK interestin large properties worth over

€700,000 in commuter countiessuch as Meath and Kildare.

“We are also seeing interestfrom UK investors who arepriced out of their own marketand feel that they havereached the top of their curveand are looking for capitalgrowth and yield in Ireland.”

Real Estate Alliance (REA) isIreland’s leading propertygroup of Chartered Surveyorswith over 55 branchesnationwide, comprising manyof the country’s longest-established auctioneers andestate agents.

Aisling described thejourney to and from Dublinwith her son - who hasfrequent seizures - astraumatic and degrading.

She said her son’s “highneeds” would be much better

served if Oran could useservices in the Royal BelfastHospital for Sick Children, rather than spending his shortlife travelling up and down toDublin.

"My son is five years old. Hedeserves to die with dignityand to spend the time he hashere happy and contented,"she said, " and not beingdragged from pillar to postand standing at the side ofthe road at 6 o'clock in themorning.

"Our children are expectedto endure (this journey) everysingle week of the year forthe very short time they haveon this earth…You wouldn’tdo it to a dog."

"If Oran has an appointmentat, say, 9am in Temple Streetfor a neurology clinic, I haveto wake him at 4am," shesaid. Aisling said she and herhusband regularly have tostop to treat Oran on the sideof the road while travelling toDublin. "We have often stoodat the side of the road tryingto administer oxygen and ananti-seizure drug in what isessentially a ditch."

Providing a fully-licensed,fast, efficient and humanedead animal collection serv-

ice across the mid-west, Maloney& Matthews Animal CollectionLtd. operates the most modernknackery in Ireland, at Tubber-curry, County Sligo (just 5kmfrom the Mayo border). We vis-ited this state-of-the-art facilityand got an insight into the his-tory and current well-being ofthe business from co-founderVincent Maloney.Maloney & Matthews Animal Col-lections Ltd. is the premier col-lector of dead and worn-outanimals in the Mayo, Sligo andLeitrim region. It is also the onlylicensed collectors of animals inthis area (license number KN65).

Between them, Vincent Maloneyand Jim Matthews boast over 45years’ experience of collectingdead animals in the region. Asthe company is co-owned, withan owner from each Mayo andSligo, they have an office in eachcounty. With there being noother knackery in County Mayo, they are the recognised knackeryfor Mayo as well as Sligo andhave been operating in this areafor over thirty years.

Operating a total of ten trucks, they guarantee a fast, efficientand professional service at alltimes. The fleet consists of oneScania articulated truck plus ninetrucks for collecting animals(comprising one Volvo, oneIveco, four MANs and three Isuzus

- the newest addition being a 141Isuzu). A brand new Manitouloadall has also been acquiredthis year.

Trucks are based in Ballinrobe,Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris,Tubbercurry, Sligo and Balli-namore and the fleet is main-tained to the highest standardsand can access all farm areas.Meanwhile, Maloney & Matthews’staff members are trained in re-moving all fallen animals in aprofessional manner to ensureminimum fuss and disturbance tothe farmer involved.

One of the directors’ mainaims is to provide farmers with avalue-for-money, reliable serv-ice. If preferred, animals canalso be dropped off at the state-of-the-art facility in Achonry,Tubbercurry, at a discounted rate- a cheaper alternative for farm-ers.

The modern knackery facilityin Achonry, Tubbercurry CountySligo benefits greatly from itscentral location. It is just sixmiles from Ballymote; nine fromCharlestown; eleven from Bal-laghadreen and Collooney round-about; and 15 miles from Ballina,County Mayo and Boyle, CountyRoscommon.

Here, Department of Agricul-ture vets carry out daily inspec-tions on fallen animals and allpaper work is completed to en-sure that animals are taken off

the farmer’s system. The facility– which also includes offices andwash areas – has the first air fil-tering system of its kind in Ire-land to ensure that all odoursand smells are removed from theair.

A same-day service is providedand lowest prices guaranteed.

“All our drivers are qualifiedand would have good experienceof farms. We also pride ourselveson providing a very ‘local’ serv-ice. We would have a driver lo-cated in every big town in Mayoand Sligo and they would havegreat local knowledge of thefarms and the people in their re-spective areas.

“This means that the farmer is

dealing with somebody he knows,as opposed to a stranger, whichwe feel is important with some-thing as sensitive as removingdead animals from his farm. Aswell as the office numbers inSligo and Mayo, we give out thelocal drivers’ numbers and thefarmer can talk directly to thedriver who is going to be callingto his farm to collect the animal. We try to look after everybody asbest as we can and we have theheight of respect for farmers.

“We are very busy at the mo-ment and the phones are ringingall the time. The business isgoing well and we are confidentthat things will continue in asimilar vein.”

Energy is vital to nearly allaspects of our daily lives - butwe rarely stop to think about

how or why we use it.

As the price of energycontinues to rise, now is theideal time to consider what

you can do to be more energyefficient. The good news is thatthere are many simple ways to useenergy more efficiently that willsave money and benefit theenvironment.

Hot WaterOf course it should be hot, but itdoesn't need to be scalding. Formost people, setting the cylinderthermostat at 60°C/140°F is finefor bathing and washing. This cansave up to €15 per year.

Light bulbs If you use a particular light for anaverage of four hours or more aday, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use

around a quarter of the electricityand last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fittedcould give you an estimated savingof €10.50 off your energy bill peryear.Kettles Heat the amount of water youreally need and if you're using anelectric kettle, make sure youcover the elements. More modernkettles have no visible element soyou use less water, you could also

try to fill a cup and use it as aguide to fill the kettle, so that youboil the right amount of water.

Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stopheat being lost through thewindows.Take care not to drape curtainsover radiators as this will funnelheat straight out of the windows.HeatingTurning the thermostat down byjust 1°C can cut as much as 10% offyour heating bills. You can also save on running costsby heating your home for an hourless each day.

Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fiat the set. Standby can use asmuch as 10%-60%of the electricitythat would be used by the device ifit was switched on. Also don'tforget to turn your Computermonitor off, as it too wasteselectricity if left on.

Appliances When purchasing kitchenappliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washingmachines, opt for a more energyefficient appliance. An EU Energy Label should bedisplayed (A to G Scale) onappliances for sale in order to helpyou make a choice, "A" being the

most efficient and "G" being theworst guzzler for energy.

Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlersso try to use washing lines orairers.Don't put very wet clothing into thedryer, make sure you wring clothingout or spin dry again to help useless energy.

Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworkingappliances in the home.Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods inthe fridge, let them cool downfirst. Don't leave the Fridge orFreezer door open, this means thefridge uses more energy to coolitself back down due to the cool airlost opening the door.

Switching Energy SupplierIn the current rising trend ofenergy prices it could well beworth shopping around to savemoney on your energy bills, furtherdiscounts are available if youswitch both gas & electricity to thesame supplier. It is a simple processand there is no disruption to yourexisting energy supply.

InsulationUpgrading loft and, where possible, cavity insulation, will save energyin your home by reducing energylosses through the building fabric.

Eddi Readerat The Hawkswell Theatre - Sat 14 Feb, 8pm €20/18conc./9 u18s

With a career spanning over 3 decades, Eddi Reader haseffortlessly developed into one of popular music’s mostthrilling and affecting performers. Though first brought into

the limelight as front woman for Fairground Attraction - who’s #1single, Perfect and parent album, First of a Million Kisses, bothtopped the British charts, it was Eddi’s subsequent solo albums thatsignaled her ability to assimilate different musical styles and makethem all very much her own. In particular, The Songs of RobertBurns (2003) was a timeless interpretation showcasing the poemsof Scotland’s national bard and gained her an MBE foroutstanding contributions to the arts. What sets Eddi apart is thedepth and quality of the emotional performance and ability notonly to move the listener, but to connect her experience to that ofher audience. From the traditional to the contemporary, EddiReader extinguishes the preordained boundaries of genre, bringing joyous life to all forms of song. Her rare blend of meltinglytrue vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute andpragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure incontemporary British music.Eddi’s new and 10th solo venture, Vagabond (Feb 2014) is acaptivating, deeply personal, yet universal sounding collection ofsongs engaging her full stylisticrepertoire. Produced by Eddiherself, it was recorded in herhometown of Glasgow with a castof well chosen musicians andlong-term musical collaboratorsincluding: John Douglas (TrashcanSinatras), Alan Kelly, Ian Carr,Ewen Vernal, Roy Dodds(Fairground Attraction), JohnMcCusker and Boo Hewerdine.Vagabond is a passionate, reflective and whimsical journeythrough family and inspiredmusical and poetic heroes thatreconfirms Eddi’s intuitive ability totransform any song or genre intoher own.

OLDER people who con-sume a diet very high incalories may be increasing

their risk of mild cognitive impair-ment (MCI), the memory loss andmental-function problems thatsometimes precede Alzheimer’sdisease. In a new study of more than 1,200people in their 70s and 80s, MayoClinic researchers found that menand women who consumed atleast 2,143 calories per day hadmore than double the odds ofhaving MCI compared with thosewho consumed 1,526 calories per

day or less.Federal health officials recom-

mend that women over age 50consume between 1,600 and2,200 calories per day, dependingon how physically active they are,and that men in the same agegroup aim for between 2,000 and2,800 calories. But the guidelinesemphasize the importance of bal-ancing calorie intake and physicalactivity in order to maintain ahealthy weight, not specific calorieamounts.

This emphasis on calorie bal-ance points to a key limitation of

the new study: Although Geda andhis colleagues took into accountextenuating factors such as bodymass index, genetic susceptibilityto Alzheimer’s disease, and med-ical history (including heart dis-ease, strokes, and diabetes), theyhad no data on exercise and phys-ical activity. Future studies willneed to examine both sides of thecalorie equation, Geda says.

The study participants, all ofwhom hailed from OlmstedCounty, Minn., filled out a detailedquestionnaire about their typicaldiet over the previous year. Theyalso underwent a series of mem-ory and cognitive tests. None haddementia, but the researchers de-termined from the test resultsthat 163 had MCI.

MCI is “the gray zone betweennormal aging and dementia,” Gedasays. “People with MCI are not de-mented [but] they are forgetful alittle more than expected for theirage.” This forgetfulness goes be-yond senior moments (such asmisplacing car keys), and might in-clude forgetting airplane flightsand other important appoint-ments, he adds.

Although it remains to beproven, there is a plausible scien-tific explanation for how overeat-ing might erode mental function.Consuming a high-calorie diet mayspur production of harmful, oxy-gen-containing molecules, andthese so-called oxidative radicalsmay accumulate in cells and causeneurons to break down, Gedasays.

The exhibition featuresdocumentary footage fromthe making of the film, aswell as clips from the film, and old silent movies whichhave inspired the film, and ison show until Saturday 28thFebruary.The 30-minute film – whichwas shot entirely in Ballina

and carries with it a strongmessage about disability –will also be shown in theauditorium of the Arts Centreon Wednesday 11th, Friday13th, Wednesday 18th andFriday 20th February, withfour screenings each night (at6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm).Admission is free but bookingis advised. Throughout themonth, there will also be aschools’ screeningsprogramme and opportunitiesfor community groups toattend specially-arrangedscreenings and visits to theexhibition. Sean Walsh, Director ofBallina Arts Centre, said: “Weare all really delighted withthe finished film. The projectwas a hugely successful andenjoyable for all involved. We have been working withthese two groups for anumber of years now, andthis represents the apex ofthe relationship. The IGNITEscheme was all about givingopportunities for groups of

disabled artists to make workof a high calibre, and SilentMoves really is that.”The film uses mime, musicand movement withgreenscreen technology andthe latest animationtechniques, and was inspiredby the classic silent movies ofthe 1930s – the era of BusterKeaton, Clara Bow andCharlie Chaplin. and wasshot on location around

Ballina.Silent Moves was one of threeIGNITE commissions whichrepresent the largest everinvestment in Ireland’s artsand disability sector. IGNITEis a new platform designed togenerate Ireland’s mostambitious showcasing oftalent from people withdisabilities, led byinternational and Irish artistsand performers withdisabilities, with projectstaking place in 2014 and 2015in Galway, Mayo and Cork. These commissions eachrepresent an investment ofup to €60,000. The initiativewill conclude with a tour ofone of the resulting works toall three counties (andbeyond) in 2015.
