Central Oregon seasons into the fold, Spring! Come and delight in all things Spring, at the NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival, Presented by The Source Weekly on April 13th, 14th, and 15th!

Centrally located on NorthWest Crossing Drive, The NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival is designed to build community for the neighborhood of NorthWest Crossing, to promote vitality for the many fine merchants and restaurants of the NorthWest Crossing Neighborhood Center, and to celebrate the coming of Spring! Using art as our canvas, music as our medium, and children’s activities and performances as a way to honor local area families, we, at West Bend Property Company, a partnership of Brooks Resources Corporation and Tennant Family Limited Partnership, and C3 Events, are proud of the many ways that this festival might enrich your life.

The festival kicks off on Friday night, April 13th, with the Cascade School of Music Art and Wine Bop! From 6-9pm, Cacade School of Music faculty, musicians and ensembles will perform, free wine samples will be served, and hand-selected, festival artists will be featured, all within the cozy, warm, and covered confines of various NorthWest Crossing Neighborhood Center merchants and restaurants. There’s the Mama Bear Oden’s Preschool “Drop and Bop” club, with free licensed childcare located at 2689 NW Crossing Drive, 541-390-0396, kids can be dropped on a first-come, first-served basis to participate in activities to welcome spring and expose children to the environment and the earth.

The festival continues Saturday, April 14th, when you can “pull your best Picasso” by entering the Street Chalk Art Competition (for both adults and kids) and qualify to win any of a number of great prizes! As you browse the more than 50 local and regional fine artists, crafters, and importers, by walking the original artist promenade on NorthWest Crossing Drive, and the Souk de Spring Festival,

you will bump into 10-foot-high puppets, zany stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, and other merry-makers! You might even see the Spring Fairy! The Children’s stage will be packed with dance troupes, musicians, kid’s yoga, and more! And there will be free children’s arts and crafts most of the weekend, hosted by local professional artists in residence. Check out The Peak 104.1 Mainstage, where Spin Doctor’s lead singer Chris Barron kicks the day off at 11am, and Bend’s own Todd Haaby and Sola Via brings home the night. There’s an all-new street of “Conscious Living Showcase” vendors—this remarkable group of intentional

organizations and businesses will be promoting green, clean, and collective wellness. We’ll have the usual fine wines, cocktails and Deschutes Brews on tap.

In producing this festival, we are standing behind the many courageous bulbs, perennials, birds, and trees, who, despite their annual confusion, are steadfast in their belief that spring is indeed coming to Central Oregon! Inspired by Bend’s fantastic cycling culture and forward-thinking trendsetters who make art,

clothing and function from repurposed materials, we bring you Cycle/Recycle! New to NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival, this theme of art, gear and activities will be seen throughout the festival weekend.

You’ll find artists such as Jackie Avery who brings cycling culture alive with her representational paintings referencing vintage cyclocross and ten speeds. You’ll find passionate bike builders such as Vulture Cycles from Bend and Capricorn Bicycles from Eugene who are pushing the definitions of hand-crafted form, function and beauty. You’ll find the Bend Endurance Academy’s Bike Rodeo, a chance for kids to test their bike skills on a fun and challenging obstacle course. You’ll find a host of artists using repurposed materials to craft jewelry, accessories, clothing and more throughout the festival space, many with a cycling theme.

Race your buddy for bragging rights at the Bend Velo booth on the Fine Artist Promenade.

Velo Sprints will be running all weekend long with simulated head-to-head 400-meter matched sprints. Fastest time of the day (men and women) wins a prize.

On the operational side of things, C3 Events is excited to launch our “Towards Zero Waste” campaign, as we work with local partners to make a huge impact on our community in terms of preservation. Come visit our “Toward Zero Waste” stations throughout the event grounds to dispose of your recycling and compost, and chat with our wonderful volunteers in green about the campaign. We’re also bringing in more bike racks to service those who decide to travel to the festival on two wheels. Look for our expanded bike storage in front of La Rosa.

Chris BArroNLead Singer from the Spin Doctors Chris Barron is many things to many people: the voice of the Spin Doctors, the face of the jam band scene, an MTV superstar, an East Village troubadour, the author of some of the 1990s’ most enduring radio hits, a father and a teacher. But these days, the Spin Doctors’ singer is most at home when he’s simply playing rock and roll.

2Nd hANd soldiersFeaturing American Idol Hollywood participant Darian Mahaney Bend native and American Idol star Darian Mahaney was exposed to the world beats of reggae music at a very young age, often caught singing along with her parents to the timeless classics of Bob Marley. Growing up in a time of amazing female vocalists in the music industry, it was obvious what she wanted. In her late teens, she formed her first band, Rhyme and Reason. This was the stepping stone for her present band, 2nd Hand Soldiers. Influenced by reggae, pop and r&b, the music is danceable and fun with a positive message. The band has played around Central Oregon for a few years with the occasional trip to bigger cities. 2nd Hand Soldiers is excited to put out an album of their own, sooner rather than later.

kAtt ANd the roots revolutioN BANd Katt is a roots reggae artist born in Kingston, Jamaica, but now lives in Ocho Rios. Katt has family ties to the NorthWest, as he has lived in Portland for 8 years. Now he visits when he’s not too busy with his music. Last year he and his band LIVE WYYA toured the east coast, the Caribbean, Spain, and Zimbabwe. Look out for LIVE WYYA coming to the West Coast in November 2012, as well as Katt’s original band, Roots Revolution, on Oct. 1.

diego’s uMBrellA San Francisco’s ambassadors of gypsy rock, Diego’s Umbrella captures California’s cultural multiplicity with enthusiasm, humor and decadence. These urban, gringo mariachis have performed more than 1,000 live shows at clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe. The band’s lively, unforgettable, heavy-hitting stage show has visually and aurally captivated diverse audiences from all walks of life. Influenced heavily by flamenco, klezmer, Eastern European and Latin sounds, Diego’s Umbrella has introduced the world to a new kind of popular music: Gypsy Rock. They possess a pop sensibility and punk rock energy with sounds reminiscent to that of Gogol Bordello, Devotchka and Muse.

NeCktie killer Necktie Killer combines refined musical arrangements with a tacky, rude boy persona to field a refreshingly unique act. An independent, 8-piece rock band based in Central Oregon, the band is comprised almost entirely of Redmond high school band program alumni. Every member can play multiple instruments, and the current instrumentation features a three- piece horn section. Despite coming from a similar background, the members of Necktie Killer bring a surprisingly diverse array of musical elements to their nearly all-original set. The discerning listener will hear alternative rock, funk, ska, metal, reggae, dub, punk, hip-hop and more within a few songs.

todd hAABy & solo viA By age 15, Todd received his first guitar as a birthday gift, not knowing that it would prove to be a life- changing event. Realizing his newfound passion for this instrument, he dedicated the coming months to constant practice, only showing his

face for the occasional PB&J sandwich. Within six months, Todd formed his first band becoming lead guitarist, fulfilling a personal goal. The next three years opened many doors to concerts, clubs, and radio performances. At age 18 Todd was asked to perform live with Grammy Award-Winning artist Phil Driscoll.

From riffs he learned as a kid listening to Edward Van Halen, to the explosive sounds of the Gypsy Kings, Todd has combined all of his musical experiences to write and define a flavor of music indicative of Nuevo Flamenco.

five piNt MAry Five Pint Mary is an eight-piece Celtic rock band located in Bend. Upbeat, loud, spirited, and rollicking, they play a unique blend of Celtic rock with an edge of punk. Influenced by traditional and original music played in Ireland, Scotland, Newfoundland, & America, as well as the bluegrass and Americana genres, their music appeals to a wide audience and is just as fun for the listeners as it is for the players. Performing together for nearly three years, the band is diverse and multi-generational.

ABigAil NyMAN Born and raised in Prineville, Abigail Nyman is quickly gaining attention as a musician, singer and songwriter whose star is on the rise. At the age of 17, accompanied by an

extremely talented group of musicians, Abigail’s rich, full-textured voice delivers a repertoire of Pop/Country originals and well-known, up-tempo cover songs. Recently, before an appreciative, sold-out Tower Theatre audience, Abigail was featured as one of the headliners at the Maiden Bend Music Fest. At age 16, Abby was the youngest artist to receive a first place award in the Central Oregon Songwriters Association song of the year competition in the pop genre. With great anticipation from her fast-growing fan base, Abigail’s debut CD, “Let Loose”, is due to be released in the Fall of 2012. To see Abigail Nyman perform live is to experience the emergence of a refreshing new artist who clearly loves entertaining and interacting with a crowd while belting out expressive, universal messages of the heart. Perhaps one local music reviewer said it best when he said that, “Abigail Nyman may very well be Central Oregon’s next big thing.”

the oXfords The Oxfords is a three-piece, father and sons rock band playing energetic assortments of the classics. The gospel inspired group is comprised of Max Clark, known for his soul-drenched voice, Seth Brown, an infectious presence and skilled guitarist and Maxwell Clark (14) an aspiring drummer with a riveting groove. I n the tradition of fantastical street art festivals held across the globe, we invite

professional artists, students, kids and anyone who doesn’t mind a little chalk dust on their hands and knees to “bring what you got” to this awesome artistic event and competition. On Saturday, April 14, the east end of NorthWest Crossing Drive will turn into a collection of some of the finest street art around. Whether you’re an adult 18 and over, or a student 8-17, we have an empty piece of paved canvas ready for you to let loose on with pastel brights.

The event will also feature four highly esteemed artists creating exhibition street chalk art murals. Two Bend locals will brighten the pavement all day with one-of-a-kind art: Kevin Schwarting is best known for his chalk work on the walls of Visit Bend and Andy Thornton won first place during our competition last year. Andy will once again create a cycling-themed piece that’s not to be missed! Joining them will be

returning artist Laila dzene and Marissa Lopez whose work has been featured at the “Art Along the Rogue” chalk festival in Grants Pass.

The Chalk Box, a non-competitive chalking area for kids under 8 is perfect for little ones. Send them over to create their own special masterpiece with sidewalk chalk, sponges, brushes, brooms and more.

A t the heart of NorthWest Crossing Bend Spring Festival are the artisans and craftspeople that will

present a lively mix of original work, including a highlight on imagery and materials derived from cycling and recycling. NorthWest Crossing is the perfect location to premiere this Cycle/Recycle theme of art! With its emphasis on green living and proximity to the cyclocross course, artists will excite attendees with an emphasis on repurposed materials, many from bike parts and accessories. The Fine Artists Promenade, filled with more than 50 artists and vendors this year, is also a great place to start planning ahead for outdoor entertaining, with garden art.
