NORTHVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

902 Tyler Road Howards Grove WI 53083 920-565-4457 Jason Cole, Principal

Dear Northview Families, It is hard to believe that a new school year is about to begin! For students, parents, and staff alike, every new school year is a time of great excitement and eager anticipation. We are really looking forward to a fun filled year of discovery and new adventures! This year our “Sneak Peek” time will be Wednesday, August 30th, from 4:30m to 6:00. Students in senior kindergarten through fourth grade, along with their families, are invited to a wonderful opportunity to bring their school supplies, locate their new classroom, meet their new teacher for the 2017- 2018 school year and perhaps see who some of their classmates are. I know we are excited to meet and get to know all of you! Please note that students in Junior Kindergarten and Early Childhood are not included in the “Sneak Peek” because they have their own scheduled, individual time to meet with their teachers. Thursday, September 7, will be the BIG DAY when all of the students arrive for their first day of class together!

We want our school to get better each year, and we depend on your help and support to make that happen. Reading at home with your child, helping with homework, talking to them about their day at school, and keeping in touch with your child’s teacher, are very important ways that we can work as a team to provide the best environment possible for our students! In addition, you are always welcome to volunteer in the school and/or your child’s classroom. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful PTO, and becoming a part of the Howards Grove PTO is also a valuable and rewarding way to become involved in the school. We want you to be as informed as possible. To help with this, Northview is now on Facebook! If you haven’t already, please be sure to “like” us on Facebook. We will try to post updates and important information on our Facebook site. In addition, we will try to post pictures of all of the wonderful things that are happening in our school as well! We are really looking forward to working with you this school year! Together, I know we are going to have a great year and provide amazing opportunities for our kids! If you have any questions, please contact the Northview office at (920) 565-4457. We will be happy to help in any way we can! Sincerely, Jason Cole

ABSENCE: If your child is going to be late arriving for school or will be absent, please call the Northview office (565-4457) before school starts! If we have not heard from you by 9:30 a.m., we will be contacting you either at home or at work. If you know in advance that your child will be late or absent from school on certain days, a written note to the classroom teacher in advance will be fine. Student absences will be recorded as required by Chapter 118.15 of the Wisconsin Statues. See Board Policy 5200 for more information regarding attendance expectations.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: From time-to-time throughout the school year, there will be after school extra curricular activities available to the students. If your child is going to stay after school to participate in any of these activities, their teacher needs a note stating that. Otherwise students without a note will be sent home as usual. We cannot rely on a child's word alone because they often get dates confused.

ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL: All students in grades K - 4 should arrive at school after 8:30 a.m. They may play outside until the 8:50 entrance bell. Playground supervision will be provided from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. No students should be at school prior to 8:30 a.m. BICYCLES: Bicycles are not to be ridden on school property except directly to the bicycle parking lot in the morning and directly to the street at the end of the day. Students who ride bikes are expected to follow all the village and school bike safety rules. Failure to follow these rules will result in the loss of the privilege to ride a bike to school. Bike riders are also expected to obey the crossing guards. Students who are reported for disobeying the crossing guards will be disciplined. Please be familiar with the “Student Guidelines for Riding Bikes or Walking Safely” found later in this booklet. BULLYING: The Howards Grove School District is committed to providing a nurturing learning environment for all of its community members and will not tolerate any action or behavior that restricts any person's rights to physical and emotional safety. Board Policy 5517.01 "Bullying and Other Forms of Aggressive Behavior" was approved by the Howards Grove School Board on August 16, 2010. This policy can be found on the district's website (www.hgsd.k12.wi.us) To support this policy, the Northview Comprehensive School Counseling Program places an emphasis on character education, modeling and teaching social skills of anger management, problem solving, friendship, and conflict resolution. The guidance curriculum equips students with developmentally appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities to prevent them from becoming targets, empowers them to stop bullying when they are the target or bystander, and includes elements that lead bullies to change their behaviors. Appropriate training shall be provided to all members of the Howards Grove School District staff related to the implementation of this policy and its accompanying administrative guidelines. In addition, informational/ educational opportunities will be provided for parents, guardians, and community members. BUS STUDENTS: Bus students must ride a bus all the way to school in the morning and all the way home at the end of the day. Students in grades EC-4 will be sent home on their bus at the end of the school day unless parents have given different instructions to their child's teacher. These instructions must be received in writing or via a telephone message.

Students who misbehave on the bus will receive Bus Conducts slips which parents must sign and return to the driver before their child may ride the bus again. When a student receives three bus conduct slips at any time during the school year, that student will lose the privilege of riding the bus for a period of one week. The privilege of riding the bus may also be revoked promptly in the case of severe misbehavior or behavior that endangers the safety of the driver or other students.

Please review the “Student Guide to Riding School Buses” rules found later in this booklet. Any students who are not normally bus students who need to ride a bus or bus students who need to ride a

different bus must complete a "Legal or Emergency Request for Transportation Change" form. This form is available in the Northview Elementary office or on the school website (www.hgsd.k12.wi.us). A request form must be completed and returned to the District Administrator at the District Office (403 Audubon Road) or Northview Elementary Office at least 1 day prior to the request date.

A NOTE FROM A PARENT/GUARDIAN WRITTEN TO THE TEACHER OR BUS DRIVER IS NOT ADEQUATE. THE OFFICIAL FORM MUST BE COMPLETED IN ADVANCE.

If you have any questions pertaining to transportation, you should call: Harms Bus Inc., 565-2375 OR District Office 565-4454

CELL PHONES: Elementary students are strongly encouraged to NOT bring cell phones (or other wireless communication devices) to school. If there are circumstances that require them to have a cell phone in their possession for use before or after school, please contact the building principal for permission. Students may not use cell phones during the school day. They must have it turned off and safely stored during the school day. The school district assumes no liability for the theft, loss, damage or vandalism to these devices. Please read Board Policy 5136 for complete details. CLASS STARTING/DISMISSAL TIMES: Early Childhood 8:45 am – 11:45 am Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri (no class on Wednesdays) Junior Kindergarten 8:45 am – 11:51 am Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri 12:39 pm - 3:45 pm (no class on Wednesdays) Half Day Senior Kindergarten 9:00 am – 11:55 am Full Day Senior Kindergarten 9:00 am – 3:45 pm Wednesdays: 9:00 am – 2:50 pm (8:50 entrance bell; 9:00 tardy bell) Grades 1-4 9:00 am - 3:45 pm Wednesdays: 9:00 am – 2:50 pm (8:50 entrance bell; 9:00 tardy bell) CLOSED CAMPUS: Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds during the school day unless they have a parent-signed request stating the purpose. This request shall be for a specific date(s). If students need to be picked up during the day for an appointment, we ask that parents come to the office to pick up their child. Students must sign in and out through the office if they arrive late or leave early. DRIVEWAY: There are parking spaces available in the semicircular driveway in the front of school. Several of these parking spaces are designated for handicapped parking only and others are available as short temporary parking spots to quickly drop off things or pick up a sick child during the school day. You may not enter or exit the semi circular driveway when the buses are arriving or leaving school at the beginning or end of the school day. If you are parked in one of these spots and the buses arrive, you will need to remain parked until all the busses leave. You may not drive around or past the busses at any time. EARLY DISMISSAL DAYS: Every Wednesday beginning September 4 through June 4, elementary students in grades K-4 will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m. to allow for teacher inservice meetings EARLY DISMISSAL FOR RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION: Please complete a request form during registration if you wish to have your child dismissed early for religious instruction. EAST PARKING LOT: This parking lot is for staff parking and for Junior Kindergarten or Early Childhood drop off and pick up only. Because we have had some minor accidents and too many close calls, please observe the one way counter clockwise circular driving pattern in the east parking lot. Please drive into the entrance and proceed around the north end of the parking lot to either park or drop off your Early Childhood or Junior Kindergarten students. Then continue around the side closest to the bike racks and turn left to continue to exit onto the street. Please do not stop and park in the two center row parking places closest to the bike racks. Doing so will obstruct the circular traffic flow. eFunds for School: This is the option to pay registration and other fees online using our eFunds for School service. Access the eFunds for School option through the district website Registration Guide link or Skyward Family Access.

You will need to include your Family ID Number and/or Student Other ID Number during this process. These numbers can be found when you access Student Family Info tab via the Family Access link on our home pages. You can use this online eFunds for School service during the school year to add money to lunch accounts, pay for milk break and field trips.

FAMILY VACATIONS: Families are strongly encouraged to schedule vacation trips during or around regularly scheduled school vacation time to minimize loss of classroom learning time. We strongly discourage long family vacations during times when school is in session. Should it be absolutely necessary to schedule a family vacation trip during days when school is in session, parents should write a letter to the principal indicating the dates of absence, as soon as possible. FIELD TRIPS: From time to time, classes at each grade level will have the opportunity to take field trips. Each student will receive a field trip permission slip approximately one week prior to the date of the field trip (two weeks if a fee is involved). That field trip permission slip will have a "DUE DATE" typed on it. The bottom portion of that permission slip must be returned by that due date with the parent signature and any fees required. If it is not returned by the designated due date, that student will need to remain at school under other adult supervision on the day of the field trip. (There may be an exception made in the case of student illness or absence on the due date.)

The main reason for this enforced due date deadline is so that the district office staff has adequate time to process the fee money and write the necessary checks. We also want to avoid last minute panicky calls from students to parents on the day of the field trip demanding that parents bring in the required fee and/or permission slip immediately.

Please send field trip money either as cash or in a separate check. Please do not combine field trip money with lunch money in the same check. INSURANCE: Coverage for dental/medical expenses incurred because of an accident can be purchased through school. This information can be found of the Registration page of the school district website (www.hgsd.k12.wi.us). LIBRARY MATERIALS: As a general rule, students may have only three items checked out at one time. When a student has overdue materials, he/she loses the privilege of checking out more items until the overdue items have been returned. Replacement cost will be charged for any materials lost, destroyed, or damaged. If lost items are found and returned at a later date, payment will be refunded. All overdue items and payments must be taken care of at the end of each quarter before report cards are sent home. LOST AND FOUND: Lost articles will be stored in a "Lost and Found" box. Items will be kept in these boxes until claimed or until the end of each season. At the conclusion of a season, all unclaimed items will be donated to a local charity or thrown away. LUNCH: The Howards Grove School District uses a computerized payment/swipe card procedure for the Food Service Program. Each family will automatically have one FAMILY LUNCH ACCOUNT set up. Parents/Guardians need to use the official lunch program envelope to send cash or check to any school office to be deposited in the family lunch account. Food Service Payment forms can also be found on the Registration page of the school district website (www.hgsd.k12.wi.us). All the information requested on the front of the envelope / payment form must be filled in completely and accurately in order to ensure that your payment is credited to the correct family lunch account. Envelopes deposited in a school office lockbox before the start of the school day will have funds updated in the family lunch account by the end of the school day. Funds will be available for the next day’s lunch. Cash or check may be any amount. However, to help you plan, the following payment chart is listed for your convenience:

Grade Level DAILY 1 WEEK 2 WEEKS 30 DAYS 60 DAYS 90 DAYS

Sr. Kdgn - 5 $2.50 $12.50 $25.00 $75.00 $150.00 $225.00

6 - 8 $2.65 $13.25 $26.50 $79.50 $159.00 $238.50

9 - 12 $2.75 $13.75 $27.50 $82.50 $165.00 $247.50

Account balances will be available on Family Access. Families will be notified when the account balance reaches $10 or less. Negative balances will not be allowed. If a student at Northview does not have adequate funds in their Family Lunch Account and no one can be reached to bring a cold lunch, a cheese sandwich will be provided that day. Then a cold lunch from home will need to be provided for the next day’s lunch because it takes 24 hours for new funds to be deposited to the family lunch account. MEDICATION: The Howards Grove Board of Education has established a policy and procedures for administering medication to conform with provisions of state law-- Act 334, section 118.29. (Board Policy 5530)

Before school authorities can administer medication to students at school, consent forms must be completed & filed with the elementary principal's office at 902 Tyler Road. Medication forms are available in the elementary office or on the school website (www.hgsd.k12.wi.us).

When administering medication to students, school authorities must be provided with a properly labeled bottle of medication. The label on the bottle shall contain the name and telephone number of the pharmacy, the student's identification, name of the drug, and the dosage to be given.

**Medication will not be administered without written parent permission. This includes nonprescription, over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin, cough medicine, etc. MILK: We will be offering milk twice a day. It will be served during a milk break and with lunch. Milk is included as part of the hot lunch. However, milk consumed at noon with a cold lunch will need to be purchased at a cost of $.30 per half pint carton. This $.30 is deducted from the family lunch account. Milk for the milk break will be $20.00 per child per semester in grades K - 4. This fee must be paid during registration. There will be no fee for the milk break for students in the Early Childhood or Junior Kindergarten Programs. OFFICE HOURS: A secretary will be on duty in the Northview School office (902 Tyler Road) from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. each day when school is in session. The phone number is 565-4457. From 4:15 p.m. to 7:45 a.m. voice mail will be available to record your messages.

PLAY PERIODS: Unless it is raining or the wind chill/temperature is below zero, all students will be expected to play outside at noon and during scheduled recess periods. Please have your children dress appropriately for winter weather; this includes boots, snowpants or snowsuit, hat or hood, gloves or mittens, and possibly a scarf.

PLAYGROUND SUPPLIES: Balls, bats, jump ropes and other playground equipment are provided for our students to use at recess. If students bring their own equipment to school, it must be clearly labeled with their name. Students are not to bring items such as hardballs, knives, toy guns, portable CD players, MP3 Players, electronic games, iPods, Pokemon toys or cards, roller blades, and skateboards to school.

If students ride a scooter to school, they must store it safely by their coat hook space or locker so it doesn’t create a safety hazard in the hallways. PROPERTY DAMAGE: Students who damage any school property such as chairs, desks, books, etc. will be assessed a fine to either cover the cost of repair or replacement, whichever is necessary. PROGRESS REPORTS: Progress reports will be issued once every nine weeks in grades 1-4. They will be issued at the end of each semester in kindergarten. Parents can normally expect their child to bring home his/her progress report approximately one week after the end of the quarter. Parent-teacher conferences are held after the first quarter in mid November and again after the third quarter in late March/early April. Junior Kindergarten students receive a written progress report at the end of each semester. Parent-Teacher conferences for junior kindergarten students will be scheduled separately at the end of the school year in May and June. SAFETY: Students are not to play in the bicycle and/or vehicle parking lots. Students are not permitted to play tackle football, or any other pushing/shoving games. Fighting, biting, spitting, hitting, and WWE Wrestling type moves will not be tolerated. Snowball throwing is not permitted on school property. Students are expected to use the playground equipment safely and to always obey the playground supervisors. SCHOOL CLOSING: Notices concerning the closing of the school due to inclement weather will be broadcast over radio stations: WTMJ 620 AM, WHBL 1330 AM, WOMT 1240 AM, WJUB 1420 AM, WBFM 93.7 FM, WKTI 94.5 FM, WLKN 98.1 FM, WQTC 102.3 FM, WXER 104.5 FM and WHBZ 106.5 FM; television stations WBAY Channel 2 and WTMJ Channel 4; and the Howards Grove School District web site at www.hgsd.k12.wi.us. All district families will also receive a

voicemail message and email message from the BlackBoard Broadcasts system when there are weather related announcements.

If we have a late start or an early dismissal, it is very possible that half day programs such as Early Childhood or Junior Kindergarten will be cancelled entirely.

In case school is closed early due to inclement weather, the older students (grades 5-12) will be dismissed first. The younger students (K-4) will be dismissed second. This allows older students to be home to take care of the younger ones when they arrive.

It is extremely important that each family have in place the necessary arrangements for where their children are to go and what they are to do when and if school is dismissed early because of bad weather. We do not have enough phone lines for every student to call home or for every parent to call in. Please plan ahead and make sure your child(ren) know what to do.

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT/NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY: School Board Policy 5517 entitles all students in the Howards Grove School District "Equal Educational Opportunities". This includes the right to an educational environment free from sexual discrimination or sexual harassment. If any person believes that the Howards Grove School District or any part of this school organization has discriminated against them on the basis of ancestry, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital or parental status or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability, he/she may bring forward a complaint. School Board Policy 5517 outlines the complaint procedure. Complaints may be filed with the building principal or with Mr. Scott Fritz, Equity Coordinator, at the Howards Grove High School office. STUDENT DROP OFF & PICK UP: Parents who drive their children to school in the morning or pick up their children at the end of the school day need to use the west parking lot entrance. There is a separate driving lane right next to the sidewalk along the west side of the building where you may pause briefly to drop off your children who will then walk on the sidewalk in the front of school to the front entrance (or around to the east playground where there is adult supervision if they arrive early). After you have made your brief drop-off or pick-up stop, please continue on around in a u-shape to exit the parking lot back onto Tyler Road using a second driveway. Please do not park and exit your car in the drop-off/pickup lane.

If you want to park and exit your car in order to come into the school building, then you must park on Tyler Road or in a designated parking space in the west parking lot. Please do not park in the east parking lot; the east parking lot is for staff use and junior kindergarten / early childhood drop off and pickup only. Please do not drop off or pick up Sr. K – 4 students in the east parking lot. SUBSTANCES: Students are not permitted to smoke and/or chew tobacco on school property. Students are not permitted to have controlled substances and/or intoxicants in their possession on school property. TELEPHONE MESSAGES: All incoming phone calls go directly to the office. During the school day a secretary will record and deliver your message so that teachers and students will not be interrupted during classes. TEXTBOOKS: Textbooks are issued to students on a rent free basis; however, we reserve the right to assess fines if books are lost, damaged, or misused. The same is true for library books. VOICE MAIL: There is voice mail available to take your calls during the hours the office is closed. Please leave your message and we will either return your call or forward your message to the appropriate staff person. This can be used to report a student absence or late arrival. Please be sure to include the student's name, homeroom teacher's name, dates of absence or time of late arrival, reason, and if you want homework, how it will be picked up. All teachers also have voice mail. WALKERS: Students who walk to school are expected to walk along the left side of the road facing traffic as close to the curb as possible if no sidewalk is available. Crossing guards will be provided by the village of Howards Grove at these intersections for the safety of our students (Roosevelt Avenue & N. Wisconsin Drive; HWY 42 & 32) from 8:30 - 8:55 a.m. and from 3:45 - 4:15 p.m. (Wednesdays from 2:50 - 3:20 p.m.) Students are expected to obey the crossing guards. Students who are reported for disobedience will be disciplined. WEAPONS: The Howards Grove School Board has adopted a policy on possession or use of weapons. Any dangerous weapon or look-alike weapon is strictly prohibited on school grounds, in school buildings, in school vehicles, or at school sponsored activities. Weapons include, but are not limited to, items such as: firearms, knives, razors, martial arts equipment, metal buckles, and pepper spray. Please refer to Board Policy 5572 for complete information.

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR RIDING BIKES

OR WALKING SAFELY

We want all our students to travel safely between home and

school. These are some reminders for parents to share with their

children to ensure that all our students are following the "rules of

the road" for bikers and walkers.

Village Bike Rules:

1. No person over the age of 10 may ride a bike on any Village

sidewalk.

2. No person under the age of 10 may ride a bike on any Village

sidewalk within the area patrolled by a crossing guard when

crossing guards are present. (This rule became necessary when

children on bikes were running over children walking on the

sidewalk. These children often walk in groups to school, spread

across the entire sidewalk, and several bike riders have lost

control of their bikes causing a collision with the walkers. If

your child is not able to ride on the road please do not allow

him/her to ride a bike to school.)

3. No person under the age of 10 may ride a bike larger than 20" on

any Village sidewalk. If the bike is over 20" the rider must

ride on the road.

4. No person may operate a bike designed or modified to BMX

specifications on any sidewalk within the village.

5. Every person authorized to ride a bike on any Village sidewalk

shall give an audible signal when passing a bike rider or

pedestrian proceeding in the same direction. (This is especially

important because, quite often, the person being passed is not

aware of the bike rider until they are passing them.)

6. Bike riders must obey speed limits and traffic signals/signs.

Please make sure the bike your child is riding is appropriate for

his/her age. A bike that your child will "grow into" creates a hazard

when they do not have full control of the bike. If your child is able

to ride on the sidewalk, make sure the bike is equipped with a horn or

bell.

Additional School Rules for Bike Riders:

1. Students who ride bikes to school are expected to obey the

traffic crossing guards at all intersections. Students who

disobey the crossing guards and who are reported to the school

principal may be asked not to ride their bike to and from school

for a designated period of time.

2. In the morning, students are to ride straight to the bike racks

and park their bikes. There is to be no riding around the

playground, or school sidewalks, or driveways.

3. In the afternoon, students are to walk their bikes from the bike

rack to the street curb and check traffic both ways before

mounting and riding off.

4. Students are not to ride double or engage in any other unsafe

actions.
