Illegal car signs warning issued

signs right across the Greater Dublin area and in his constituency.

“I have already put my concerns to Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, and she has informed me about the in-ter-agency response to dealing with these signs,” Deputy Broughan told Northside People. “I welcome the re-newed commitment by the authorities, including Dublin City Council and An Garda Síochána, to address the issue.

“One of the key problems with the widespread nature of the signs ap-pears to be the use of disposable mobile phones.”

Deputy Broughan said the use of these phones – also known as ‘burners’ - which are not registered, makes it difficult to trace any individual involved in alleged illegal activity of this kind.

“This is an issue I will be raising in Dáil Éireann in the coming weeks,” he added.

“Obviously, there are also very seri-ous issues about the protection of con-sumers and workers in the legitimate car sales business in the ongoing prolif-eration of these signs.”

In a statement to Northside People, the city council pointed out that the signs are illegal and also pose a safety risk to motorists.

It is also urging car owners who are thinking of selling or disposing of their vehicles through the advertisements to reconsider.

Dublin City Council’s Litter Prevention Officer, Bernie Lillis, said: “Cash for Car signs have blighted the streets of Dublin over the last number of years.

“Our Waste Management Department take these signs down on site and will continue to do so.

“We are also passing these phone numbers on to the gardaí and have been liaising with them on the possibility of disconnecting the phone numbers in question.”

Dublin City Council is strongly ad-vising motorists not to respond to the

signs, stating that: •The signs are illegal and, under the

Litter Pollution Act 1999, are subject to a fine of €150 each or €4,000 if convicted in court.

•The signs are a distraction to motor-ists and as a result pose a safety risk to road users.

The ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ media awards are launched

help students research and un-derstand various issues relat-ing to drug and alcohol use in Irish society.

The prizes for 2015 include iPad Minis and a cash award of €2,000 for the overal winner.

The competition is sup-ported by the Department of Health, the HSE, COSC, the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Healthy Ireland and Drugs.ie - Ireland’s National Drug and Alcohol in-formation and support web-site.

Speaking at the launch, Di-rector of the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Tony Duffin, explained some of the competition’s ben-efits.

“This competition offers participants the opportunity to creatively use digital tools to present issues relating to drug and alcohol use from their own perspective,” he said.

“The awards are a great op-portunity to recognise and reward young people who are passionate about using digital content to relay their message.

“I am looking forward to see-ing what messages are high-lighted by the many entrants and I wish everyone the best of luck!”

Minister Varadkar said he was delighted to launch the 2015 awards. “These awards give young people an oppor-tunity to discuss issues around alcohol and drugs through a range of media,” he said.

“Targeting young people with prevention in mind, and highlighting the dangers of substance abuse, are some of the most important things we can do.”

To enter, students are asked to create a short video, an audio clip, a news article or a poster on either the effects of alcohol on the family or the effects of drugs on mental health.

The age categories for en-tering are 12-14; 15-17; 18-21 and 22-25.

Winners from the four age categories will receive an iPad Mini and the overall winner will

McGrath backs I.A.S.S Pensioners in the Dáil

ForumL: DÁIL ÉIREANN, Sitting Time: 21:00 (9 o’clock), Sitting Date: 11/11/2014Deputy Finian McGrath: I welcome the opportu-nity to contribute to the debate on the Social Wel-fare Bill 2014. I also welcome the positive aspects of the legislation. This is an important debate as we are dealing directly with people’s lives, incomes and ability to survive. We must look carefully to the future and ensure all promised pensions are secure. It is important that we do not let down or ignore any legislative protection for deferred pen-sion scheme members, particularly senior deferred members of the Irish airlines superannuation, IAS, scheme. I totally support the IAS scheme pension-ers. I will not stand by and let what is happening happen. It is a grave injustice against the deferred IAS scheme pensioners. I urge the Government to think again and row back on the grave injustice. All the pensioners want is parity of treatment.

I will give examples of real cases because we are talking about social welfare and pensions. These issues highlight the grave injustice that has been perpetrated on the IAS scheme pensioners. A con-stituent of mine wrote to me today and stated:

We are well aware you are under pressure with the issue of the Irish Water Board but this is not my concern. My concern is far more critical and will have far longer and more savage repercussions for as long as I live. This will be a bigger headache for you than the Water Board if you do not act to introduce [and support an] amendment.

Incidentally, I support it. My correspondence also states:

I worked for 36.5 years with Aer Rianta/DAA, leaving in April 2010

with a proposed pension deferred of €35,640 due on 1st Oct 2016. I was led to believe that my pension would be UN-coordinated (Page 4 of my DAA Letter of Offer 2010) with my State OAP under the scheme rules. Which means I could have ex-

pected [in the region of] €35,640+€11,487=€47,127.[However,] DAA 2010 letter of offer proposed

that at NRD €35,640+€11,487=€47,127.Effect of coordination, €35.640-

€11,487=€24,153.Restructured pension will now reduce to

€19,419.Coordination will apply from NRD normal retir-

ing date of 1st Oct 2016 despite the State OAP not applying until 25th July 2017.

10 months on an income of €19,419 a huge drop from what I signed

up for in 2010. I’m sure the Dept who looked over and approved all financial dealings of DAA were aware of the offer being made.

Please also note that a) on my death, my spouse will be expected to live on 50% of my proposed sav-agely reduced pension and b) while civil servants and active employees of Aer Lingus and the DAA will be entitled to jobseekers’ benefit until they reach State pension age at 66, 67 or 68, my pension will have the State pension proportion deducted from the date I will receive my first IASS payment.

The correspondence urges me to vote in favour of the amendment and right

a glaring wrong. The constituent refers to his family:

Will you have me and my family in your thoughts next January

when the Aer Lingus share price takes off and shareholders not even resident in this country make a fortune at the expense of the Deferred Members? Will you be one of the Members of this Oireachtas who stood by and let this happen?

I raise this tonight because I fully support the IAS scheme pensioners.

There are many living across my constituency of Dublin North-Central and across the north side. I plead with the Government to have some common sense and end this grave injustice.

The Bill proposes a number of changes to a range of social welfare

payments and requirements, including changes to the habitual residence condition and the family income supplement. It seeks to transpose certain provisions of Directive 2010/41/EU and also pro-poses amendments to the Pensions Act 1990 in respect of notifying members of a defined benefit pension scheme whereby scheme benefits are be-ing restructured under section 50 of the 1990 Act. That is essentially what the legislation is about. I mentioned pensions because they are referred to in the Bill. It reminds me of another constituent who wrote to me yesterday. He stated:

When I left Aer Lingus after 44 years of serv-ice, it was on the basis that my pension would be €44,682 PA. I was informed by the Trustees that this figure has been revised down to €26,411. As I’m classed as a Deferred Pensioner I nave no rep-resentation at all to challenge this savage cut. This reduction is over 40%.

This is a grave injustice. This gentleman pleads with me to support him. It is important that I high-light this in this important debate. We are talking about social welfare and the welfare of our constit-uents, including pensioners.

Having already asked the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport and Minister for Social Protection, I now ask the Minister of State, whom I know listens to sensible proposals and un-derstands a grave injustice when it is made known to him, to do his best to resolve the issue arising from the proposed cut of 60% to the pension en-titlements of deferred members by the trustees of the IAS scheme by amending the Pensions Act 2009 in order to regroup deferred pensioners with pensioners in payment, as was the case up to 2009, through provisions of the Social Welfare and Pen-sions (No. 2) Act 2013. Will the Minister for Trans-port, Tourism and Sport sign the ministerial order

and enforce the requirement in the 2014 legislation?I welcome this opportunity and urge the Minister of

State to listen to the IAS scheme pensioners. They deserve justice and are entitled not to have their rate cut by 60%. They deserve to be looked after in the future.

Tony McCullagh

A DISGRUNTLED nation has finally found its voice, it seems.

Other countries must have marvelled at our apparent tolerance for the brutal austerity measures imposed on us since the IMF/EU bailout in 2010. It’s ironic that this bubbling discontentment only boiled over after the Government unveiled what they widely termed a “neutral” budget.

Once again we were being assured that the worst was over (the late Brian Lenihan rued the day he uttered those words in the Dáil). While all the economic barometers such as housing and employment were starting to head in the right direction, the cumulative effects of punitive taxes eventually took their toll.

I find it interesting that it was the is-

sue of water charges that got people out on the streets in their tens of thousands and not the imposition of property tax a couple of years ago. Whatever about the rather spurious case for landing us with yet another household bill dressed up as some sort of water conservation measure, there is something particu-larly immoral about taxing the family home in the teeth of the worst property crash in modern history.

It beggars belief that people strad-dled with massive mortgage debt – particularly those in negative equity – should be expected to pay a tax on their ‘asset’. Let’s not forget that the deposits we had to find to get on the property ladder was after-tax income. Our monthly mortgage payments are also after-tax income.

Property tax is a bitter pill to swallow for those who had to pay ridiculous sums in stamp duty during the Celtic

Tiger years. It’s extraordinary that we allowed ourselves to be bullied by the Government into accepting property tax. Why weren’t we on the streets then? What’s going to happen when house values inevitably rise and we have to recalculate our LPT liability after 2016?

The Government’s jittery reaction to the water charges protests shows that Fine Gael and Labour have finally grasped the political reality of the situ-ation. The recent poll showing Sinn Féin to be the most popular party in the country will have further concentrated minds in Government Buildings - and this at a time when Gerry Adams is em-broiled in the Mairia Cahill controversy.

We will have a new Government by 2016 but will regime change make any difference to our lives? Recent history will have taught us not to hold our breath. Expect the next Government to blame the old one for all our ills.

It took the issue of water charges to get people out on the streets. PHOTO: Stephen Kavanagh▪

Jamie’s star continues to shine brightly

STAR QUALITY: Jamie Finn▪

Jamie Finn (16), from Swords, was named captain of the Ireland Under 17s that travelled to Ser-bia last month for the UEFA WU17 Championships Qualifying Round Group 4.

In their three games, Ireland defeated Lithuania and Romania (both 2-0) and drew 1-1 with the hosts.

Jamie, a defender who plays her club football with Shelbourne’s La-dies’ team, scored the second goal in the win over Lithuania,

Ireland topped the group and the draw for the Elite Round of the competition will take place this week.

A NORTHSIDE teen is continu-ing to make waves with the Irish women’s team after producing some very good performances in the international arena.

Jamie’s success should come as no surprise given that she started playing football at the age of five with her local team, Swords Manor Boys.

At the age of 13, she could no longer play for the boys’ team and joined Shels.

Jamie captained the Ireland Schools’ team at the age of 14, which came second in an interpro-vincial tournament involving Scot-land, England and Wales.

Earlier this year she was picked for the Ireland Under 19 squad that got to the semi-finals of the Europeans. Unfortunately she got injured in camp a week before she was due to fly out with the team.

Understandably, the St Finian’s Community College student was devastated but stuck to her reha-bilitation programme and came back stronger.

Alex’s wristbands to help her support bereaved children Jack Gleeson

A LOCAL girl’s brave decision to open up about losing her father to suicide is set to benefit chil-dren who have suffered a similar loss.

Last August Alex Morgan, from Santry, told about her experience in a YouTube video and she hoped it would encourage parents to be honest with their chil-dren when it came to discussing suicide.

The ten-year-old’s father, Andy Mor-gan, took his own life on New Year’s Eve 2010, devastating her, as well as sister Leanne (19), brother Charlie (8) and mum Joanne Featherstone.

Family and friends set up a founda-tion in Andy’s name to raise awareness of suicide and mental health and fund-raise for support organisations.

After Alex was widely praised on social media sites for her honesty and bravery in the video, the Andy Morgan Foundation decided to produce pink wristbands with the #isup-portalex hashtag.

The wristbands sold for €2 each and Alex was asked where she’d like the money to be spent. She decided she’d like to support other children who’d lost a par-ent to suicide.

Thanks to Alex’s selflessness, 11 families are now in line for a Christmas treat from the Andy Morgan Foundation. They’ll each receive a festive gift hamper filled with goodies including family cinema passes, meal vouchers and family zoo passes.

Proud mum Joanne said Alex is only too happy to be supporting children who have suffered as she and her siblings have.

“She’s a great kid,” Joanne told Northside Peo-ple. “She’s not expecting anything or doesn’t want

anything out of this for herself. She’s just glad it’s helping other families out there.

“I think it makes her feel a bit bet-ter as well to know that there are other kids like her who have gone through the same thing that she went through.”

The Andy Morgan Foundation is still going strong and last week received a cheque for €2,290 from Pins and Nee-dles Tattoo Salon, which recently held

a day of tattooing and donated the proceeds to the organisation.

The foundation has also opened a drop-in centre in Finglas where locals struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts can go for a chat or counselling. The foundation can be contracted through its Facebook page.

School allocation demandedTHE allocation of additional school accommodation to north county Dublin, and particularly to Malahide and Swords, must be prioritised as economic con-ditions continue to improve.

That’s according to Dublin North TD Alan Farrell (FG).

“As many parents will know,

there is currently a capacity is-sue facing many schools across Fingal,” he said. “This issue must be resolved as a matter of priority in order to prevent the situation worsening in the coming years.

“Many schools in Fingal have been successful in their applica-tions for investment over the past three years and the Department

of Education and Skills has given the green-light to a number of new projects. “However, I believe it is of the utmost importance that action now be taken to ensure that there is adequate infrastructure in place to cater for the increased demand which schools in the con-stituency will undoubtedly face in the not-so-distant future.” November SpecialS

Remembering Ernest Shackleton

Shackleton lived briefly in Dublin, while his father studied medicine at Trinity College, be-fore settling in London.

As a child Shackleton ‘con-sumed books’, firing his im-agination. Reading sparked his sense of adventure, the defining characteristic of his life. Though clearly intelligent, school bored him and at 16, Shackleton left school and went to sea.

Shackleton joined the Mer-chant Navy as a ‘before the mast’ with the North West Ship-ping Company. Over the next four years, Shackleton became an experienced sailor travelling to the four corners of the world.

Shackleton was at home on the sea and by 1898 he qualified as a Master Mariner. This meant he was qualified to command a British ship anywhere in the world.

Daithí Ó Riain

ONE hundred and forty years ago, the legendary polar ex-plorer Ernest Shackleton, was born in Athy, County Kildare.

Ernest Shackleton▪

While working on a British troop ship, ‘The Tintagel Castle’ during the Boer War, Shackleton became friends with Lieutenant Cedric Longstaff. This friendship was to change his life.

Longstaff’s father, L.W. Long-staff was the key financial back-er behind the National Antarctic Expedition.

The thirst for adventure Shackleton had developed as a child had only grown stronger as he got older. Shackleton used his friendship with Cedric Longstaff to ensure he secured a position on the expedition.

At an interview, Shackleton impressed those organising the adventure and he was soon ap-pointed as Third Officer on the Expeditions ship, ‘The Discov-ery’. Shackleton, the explorer was born.

The North Antarctic Expedi-tion, popularly known as the Discovery Expedition, departed from London on July 31 1901, under the command of Captain Robert F. Scott.

As Third Officer, Shackleton’s duties were listed as being ‘in charge of seawater analysis. Ward room caterer. In charge of holds, stores and provisions. The expedition reached Antarctica on January 8, 1902. During the expedition Shackleton proved himself as a capable explorer. He took part in an experimental balloon flight and also edited a newspaper, ‘The South Polar Times’.

Shackleton was part of the three-man team, along with Captain Scott and Edward Wil-son that set a new farthest south record, reaching 82*17’ on a journey which became an epic test of endurance. Shackleton’s health had suffered greatly on this mission and Scott decided to send him home on the relief ship, ‘Morning’ in January 1903. A decision Shackleton resented.

In 1908, Shackleton organ-

ised a new expedition for the South Pole on board the Nimrod, which reached Antarctica on January 21, 1908. From a base camp at Cape Royds, Shackleton embarked on the famous ‘Great Southern Journey’ during which he again set a new farthest south record of 88*’23’, just 112 miles from the south pole.

Once again his survival skills were put to the test, as the re-turn journey became a race

against starvation. Other important achieve-

ments on this mission included the approximate location of the magnetic pole, the first ascent of Mount Erebus, and the first re-corded sighting and human trav-el on the South Polar Plateau.

Shackleton returned to Europe as a hero and was in constant demand as a public speaker. He published his account of the ex-pedition under the title ‘Heart of

the Antarctic’. When questioned by his wife

about whether he had been dis-appointed not to reach the South Pole, Shackleton the great survi-vor, characteristically respond-ed: ‘a live donkey is better than a dead lion, isn’t it?’

However, it is for the ‘En-durance Expedition 1914’, that Shackleton is best known. Part 2 of Shackleton’s story will feature in Northside People next week.

Moving home tips for puss and pooch

home together with your pet. • Settling in - While the new

home will look and feel differ-ent, the familiar smells of your

belongings will help your pet ad-just quickly. And in no time at all, you’ll be moved in and it will feel just like home.

Pets add an extra dimension to moving but there are ways to minimise the stress levels for both you and your animals.

Follow these tips to help you plan your move successfully.

• Microchipping - All pet own-ers should microchip their cats and dogs, especially before plan-ning a move. It doesn’t matter how long the distance, an animal can easily get confused in the chaos of the move and then be-come lost. If the unthinkable happens, be sure to contact local animal shelters close to both the old and new homes.

• Name tags - Update your cat or dog’s collar with its name, your new home information and a phone number that will stay active even after the moving pe-riod.

• Food and medications - Don’t pack your dog’s or cat’s food and medications until you’re ready to get into the car to make the move. Be sure to have at least an extra week of both in supply, just in case you can’t find things when unpacking.

• Practice moving - If you’ve never travelled with your pet before the move, start taking it on short rides. You may discover your cat gets motion sickness, or that your dog prefers to ride with a training harness rather than in-side a pet carrier. Knowing how your pet reacts could help deter-

mine whether any medications are needed.

• Emergencies - Make a list of emergency vet clinics in towns along your route so you have information in case you need to make a sudden stop for your pet.

• Seating - On moving day, be sure to keep your pet in your car or in the cab of the moving truck. Never put a pet in the back of a removal van because it could be-come injured or sick. Have plenty of food and water available and consider not feeding your pet for a couple of hours before you de-part to avoid an upset stomach.

• Packing - While packing the removal van, keep your pet in a small room in the house so it doesn’t become overwhelmed by the commotion. A bathroom or closet works well. Put a note on the door advising friends or mov-ers to not open the door for the protection of your pet.

• Rest stops - During rest stops along your route, be sure to keep your pet leashed or in a pet car-rier and keep it in a well-venti-lated area. Schedule rest stops every two hours. Don’t leave your pet in a closed vehicle for any amount of tim.

• Arrival – When you arrive at your new home, put your pet in a small room while the unpacking gets sorted. Once the van is un-loaded, you can explore your new

This payment was formerly called the Widow’s/Widower’s (Contributory)

Pension. Either you or your deceased spouse

or civil partner must have enough so-cial insurance contributions (PRSI).

To qualify you must, of course, be a widow, widower or surviving civil part-ner and you must not be cohabiting with another person.

If you are divorced and you would have been entitled to a Widow’s, Wid-ower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s (Con-tributory) Pension had you remained married, you keep your entitlement to the Widow’s, Widower’s or Surviving Civil Partner’s (Contributory) Pension).

Widow’s Pension Non-Contributory - this pension is a means-tested payment payable to a widow, widower or surviv-ing civil partner who does not qualify for a contributory widow’s, widower’s or surviving civil partner’s payment.

This payment was formerly called the Widow’s/Widower’s (Non-Contribu-tory) Pension).

It is a payment for widows, widowers or surviving civil partners who do not have dependent children.

People with dependent children should apply for the One-Parent Fam-ily Payment.

You transfer to State Pension (Non-

Contributory) when you reach 66-years-of-age.

This pension is taxable but you are unlikely to pay tax if it is your only in-come.

There are a number of different pensions which the State provides.▪

Designed by international artist duo Craig & Karl, this limited-edition label Kiehl’s x Craig & Karl will adorn some of Kiehl’s most beloved customer favorites, including Kiehl’s Creme de Corps, Creme de Corps Whipped, Ultra Facial Cream, Calendula Toner, Hand Salve and a lip balm set. The Ultra Facial Cream is my favourite and is a light-textured daily hydrator that leaves skin comfortable and visibly well-balanced. Provides 24-hour hydration with continuous water replenishment throughout the day, leaving skin feeling supple, particularly in harsh weather conditions. Helps reduce moisture loss while drawing and absorbing moisture from the air.

The Imperial inspired style draws inspiration from mili-tary detailing and turn of the century royalty. Imperial is a dramatic mix of foil prints, em-bellishment and texture. This outfit (right) - jacket (€90), skirt (€30), and bag €38 - works for the younger girl who wants to look incredibly stylish while still keeping warm as the cold weather approaches.

Key pieces in the collection include sheer layered maxi dresses and updated military jackets with metallic fastenings. Add heeled peep-toe boots and gold cuffs to complete the look.

Unapologetically feminine, Vintage Belle is the ultimate in retro glamour, offering a relaxed approach to occasion dress-ing. A delicate palette of black, nudes, pale metallics and blush tones are layered together in sheer and satin fabrics with ruffle details and pleating for a look of gentle elegance is what this style is all about. This look (pictured left) - top €22 and skirt €28 - injects a little bit of fun into any occasion. Accessories in the collection include fur headbands and over-sized brooches. All the above are available at boohoo.com

I am a huge fan of Boohoo.com as they offer such good value and style. This Christmas look no further, no matter what your style. Here is a brief taste of what the online store has for you this party season.

Combining luxurious fabrics with a dark, gothic feel, this witchery style (pictured right) is a punk edged approach to party wear. This striking jumpsuit (€60) paired with the choker

(€12) is one of my favourite looks and will no doubt become a favourite in your wardrobe this party season.

Attitude is key and a street style element runs throughout this range.

Complementing the pieces are cleated sole mules, mock croc shopper bags and chunky gold jewellery.

topaz jobs on the wayCONVENIENCE and fuel retailer To-paz has announced that it will create 110 new jobs between two major new service stations opening in North Dub-lin and County Laois in January.

The two stations are being developed at a cost of €10 million.

In addition to the full-time jobs being created, an additional 200 people are employed on the development of the sites which will include service stations, restaurants and shops. One of the sta-tions is located at Junction 3, adjacent to where the M50 meets the M1 at Clon-shaugh in North County Dublin.

Paul Candon, Marketing and Corporate Services Director at Topaz, said the new

sites heralded a period of significant in-vestment by the company and further job creation.

“Topaz is in job creation and expan-sion mode and we are constantly looking at sites with good potential – particularly near motorways,” said Mr Candon.

“These new sites will provide services to approximately 50,000 motorists using the two motorways each day.”

Discussing plans at the site in Clonshaugh were (from l-r): Paul Candon, Marketing and Corporate Services Director at Topaz; Deirdre Bruton, Topaz staff member; and Jonathan Diver, Retail Network Development Manager.

Seasonal workers are given advice on their rightsJOBSEEKERS who avail of tempo-rary seasonal work for up to eight weeks over the Christmas season have been reassured that their so-cial welfare payments will be imme-diately reinstated when the period of employment ends.

A customer who is getting either Jobseeker’s Benefit or Jobseeker’s Allowance and who receives an offer of temporary employment is advised to contact their local Intreo Centre or social welfare office with the details of the work that they are undertak-ing. Their Jobseeker’s Allowance or Benefit will be suspended rather than closed. Similarly, they should contact their local Intreo Centre or social wel-fare office as soon as the employment finishes and their payment will be re-instated immediately.

Minister of State at the Department of Social Protection, Kevin Humphreys, said jobseekers who are offered tem-porary seasonal work should not be concerned about delays in reinstating their Jobseeker’s payment when the period of employment ends.

“The Department of Social Protec-tion provides employers with a free recruitment service to help them fill vacancies in their businesses,” said Minister Humphreys.

“I would urge employers who have vacancies for temporary work over the Christmas period to contact their local Department of Social Protection Intreo Centre or local office and staff will make every effort to help them to find suitable people to fill their vacan-cies.”

In addition to the Department’s free recruitment service, employers who have full-time vacancies will also get information about JobsPlus, the wage subsidy scheme, through which the State pays cash grants over two years to businesses that hire jobseek-ers who have been out of work for 12 months or more.

Minister Humphreys added: “Job-sPlus is a support from my Depart-ment which is proving to be extremely successful and is available to all em-ployers, regardless of the size of the company, who employ people who have been unemployed for 12 months or more.

“The incentive provides two levels of payment: €7,500 over two years to the employer for each person recruit-ed who has been unemployed for more than 12 months and €10,000 over two years to the employer for each person recruited who has been unemployed for more than 24 months.”

New A6 in time for January deliveryAUDI Ireland has announced details of the new generation Audi A6 range which was re-cently unveiled at the Paris Mo-tor show.

The A6 has been refreshed with new engine configurations, transmissions, headlights and tail lights and upgraded infotainment systems.

It will arrive in Ireland this month, in time for January 2015 delivery. The new generation A6 will be available with a choice of seven powerful yet highly effi-cient engines.

The two petrol and five diesel units offer power outputs ranging from 150PS to 320PS, and com-ply with stringent EU6 emissions legislation. Two ‘Ultra’ 2.0TDI ver-sions are offered – the TDI 150 and TDI 190 with 109g and 110g respectively providing customers with supreme driving enjoyment along with segment leading effi-ciency. Audi Ultra is the umbrella term Audi use for all efficiency technologies and sustainability. It can be particularly showcased by a CO₂ champion in each range which proudly wears the ‘Ultra’ badging. The top of the range en-gine, the 4.0-litre TFSI, is availa-ble in the Audi S6. It now delivers 450PS of power and uses innova-tive COD (cylinder on demand) technology to emit just 214g CO.

The 3.0 TDI 320HP BiTurbo is mated to an eight speed tiptronic transmission. All other engine variants are linked to either a newly designed six speed man-ual gearbox that is particularly lightweight and low-friction, or a seven speed S-Tronic twin-clutch transmission which replaces the familiar eight-speed multitronic box. S-Tronic can be specified on all engines for a premium of only €2,300 enabling customers to

enjoy lightning fast gear changes with even greater efficiency.

With the introduction of the refreshed A6, Audi Ireland has comprehensively improved the car’s already generous standard equipment. Xenon lights, MMI navigation, acoustic glass and an anti-glare interior mirror are now standard in all SE versions and above. The existing SE and S Line versions will be complemented by a new SE Business line for the first time. Upgrades feature electric front seats, fine grain ash wood inlays, four zone climate control, MMI Navigation plus and 18” 10 spoke alloy wheels. S Line models are upgraded for 2015 also with the addition of full LED headlights offering 5,500 kelvins of lighting – levels similar to daylight.

assess each vehicle, attributing points on the basis of criteria rang-ing from innovation and safety, to space, comfort, build quality, driv-ing quality and value for money.

“It has been heartening to see the uplift in car sales across the country this year and we can only hope that it is heralding a more general improvement in the coun-try’s economic outlook,” said Tom

Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ire-land, Irish Car of the Year sponsor.

“For anyone in that increasing number of motorists who is con-sidering a new car with the 151 registration, the choices of the IMWA car jury will be a good guide in drawing up a list of ‘must try’ cars.” Last year the Continental Irish Car of the Year title went to the Citroen C4 Picasso while the

van accolade was won by the Mer-cedes-Benz Sprinter.

Meanwhile, dealerships across the city are bracing themselves for high demand for new cars in Janu-ary 2015. As consumer confidence gradually returns to the economy, those who have been putting off the purchase of a new car in recent years will now be encouraged to make the move.

Confirmation of Audi’s ‘Vors-prung durch Technik’ ethos comes with the introduction of a new technology package. Featuring MMI Navigation plus, Audi Con-nect, Bose surround sound, head up display and reverse camera it reinforces the A6 as a technical tour de force. The sporty, sophis-ticated exterior is echoed in the car’s spacious interior. The colour palette has been revised and now offers additional colour options to complement existing black S Line upholsteries.

The new Audi A6 is available to order now and will begin arriv-ing at dealerships in November. Its entry price in Ireland will be €44,750 OTR and will be avail-able on PCP through Audi Finance from €429 per month.

new Meriva gets mid-life facelift

I remember our school prin-cipal and his wife, who was also a teacher in the school, had a car where the doors opened forward. I think it was a Ford, but it certainly was a reliable car. Many the snowy morning we hoped that the teachers wouldn’t make it up the big hill from their home in the village to our rural school, but I think only once, in really heavy snow, did they fail to make it.

They say school days are the

Sean Creedon

I SUPPOSE every new car should have some item that makes it stand out from the pack. In the case of Opel’s Meriva, it’s the rear flex doors, which open forward and they brought me back in time to my national school days.

Opel’s Meriva is certainly worth a test drive ▪

best days of our life, but I had a good time last week in the re-vamped Meriva. And my family enjoyed the high seated posi-tion and of course the novelty of using the rear-facing back doors, which open out to an 80 degrees angle.

The rear-facing doors can still be found in Rolls Royce cars and London cabs and they pro-vide more space to load baby seats and provide more space for elderly people to access and egress.

The Meriva has certainly im-pressed in Germany where a medical association that sets orthopedic standards for car seats were so impressed that they have given their prestig-ious certification to the car.

The Meriva has recently got a discreet mid-life facelift with new touches to the front grille,

bumper and headlight design. And most importantly, a new 1.6-diesel CDTi engine, which was very lively and very frugal.

Externally the car hasn’t changed much, but there are a few new touches inside. The interior is brightened up by a full-length sun roof and unlike the Cactus I had the previous week, that was a screen I could open and close to determine the amount of sunlight that was allowed into the cabin.

The cabin is well laid out and there are plenty of cubby holes to hold your phone, glasses, note books, pens, etc. Every-thing is ‘Flex’ in the Meriva: FlexDoors, FlexSpace to adjust the back seats and FlexRail to carry two bikes. The latter will cost you an extra €863.

The boot is a decent size and if you need to carry any bulky

items there is plenty of space when you leave down the back seats. However, there’s no room in that spacious boot for a spare wheel.

I don’t think you will find many people who like the elec-tronic handbrake over the tra-

ditional hand brake. But I must say that the elec-

tronic version in the Meriva was very good and you left the car happy in the knowledge that the handbrake had engaged when you flicked the button near the gear lever.

Prices start at €18,995 for the 1.4 version, while the 1.6 diesel I drove starts at €21,495. Road tax is €200.

It’s neat and flexible and with those heated front seats, cer-tainly worth a test drive as win-ter approaches.

Maths students Khan do betterMATHS workshops are taking place at two locations in Dublin to show teachers how millions of students are getting to grips with maths through a free on-line resource.

The Khan Academy is gaining huge popularity in Ireland, with a tenfold increase in teachers us-ing it as part of their class activi-ties in the past year.

Globally, it has more than 10 million users a month with over four million maths problems solved each day and high-profile advocates such as Bill Gates and Minister David Cameron.

The Khan Academy’s highly an-ticipated MATHletes Challenge, registration for which opens in December, will spark healthy ri-valry among students, schools and counties across Ireland in the New Year. In preparation for the challenge and to provide practi-cal training on how teachers can use the Khan Academy, the work-shops will take place at Blackrock

Education Centre, on Tuesday, November 25 and in Dublin West Education Centre, on Monday, December 1.

The workshops will feature qualified tutors providing invalu-able peer-to-peer tips to primary and secondary school teachers.

Entrepreneur, inventor and in-vestor Sean O’Sullivan, who has donated €6.6 million to the Khan Academy, believes the workshops are ideal for teachers who want to upskill and improve their stu-dents’ confidence, competence and engagement in maths.

“Our goal is to replace Ireland’s recent lacklustre performance on international maths ratings with world-class talented STEM gradu-ates to meet the needs of the cur-rent and future jobs market,” he said. “Ireland is already becom-ing a global leader in developing innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education initiatives.

“The MATHletes Challenge has become the premier maths com-

petition on the Irish school calen-dar and is already a global model for Khan Academy innovation.

“Over 300 teachers, 3,000 students, and 10 per cent of Irish schools competed last spring in the pilot year of the MATHletes Challenge, which created unprec-edented excitement, buzz and a competitive spirit about maths that rivals all-Ireland GAA Cham-pionships.”

Following the official launch of the MATHletes Challenge in January, participating Education Centres will also host free Khan Academy ‘maths clubs’ for stu-dents during the competition.

These clubs have already proven tremendously successful in Galway, where earlier this year over 200 students attended the oversubscribed sessions every Saturday.

Trinity event opensA MENTORING programme involving more that 1,200 students has been launched this week.

The Trinity Access 21 pro-gramme aims to support the development of a ‘college-go-ing culture’ in schools with lower than average higher education progression rates.

Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, will open the event. Trinity Access 21 patron, David Puttnam and his son Sacha Puttnam, will also perform a spirited selection of songs from their ‘Puttnam Plays Puttnam’ repertoire as part of the launch.

Connecting 1,200 sec-ond-year students from 11 Dublin area schools, with 320 volunteer mentors drawn from the Trinity Access Programmes (TAP) alumni and supporters’ network, the event marks the beginning of a three-year long mentor-ing relationship focused on developing college awareness and empowering students in their choices to participate in third-level education.

Vision health conference is held in Croke ParkWORLD-RENOWNED leaders in vision health met at Croke Park recently to share their insights into the global fight against blindness and discuss their incredible success in restoring patients’ eyesight. Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar, officially opened Retina Conference 2014, organised by Fighting Blindness.

Minister Varadkar thanked the vision experts for their commit-ment and dedication to finding a cure for blindness.

Fighting Blindness, a patient-led charity, brought leading scientists, researchers, clinicians and pa-tients together for the 15th annual conference to discuss developments in the field of eye health, and highlight the exciting treatments, clinical trials and technologies that are bringing experts closer to finding a cure for blindness.

The charity hopes the conference and the associated engage-ment with policy makers and other stakeholders will encourage and attract future clinical trials to Ireland and provide people with sight loss access to emerging therapies.

Speaking at the event, Minister Varadkar said: “This is an excit-ing time for the vision health community, especially patients and families who are affected by sight loss.

“The innovative and pioneering work presented is incredibly important and gives hope to the 224,000 people affected by sight loss in Ireland, and to future generations affected by genetic eye disease.”

Minister Varadkar added: “It’s really encouraging to hear about the huge progress being made in treating blindness, thanks to the dedication of those working in research and vision health, and the commitment of organisations like Fighting Blindness.”

Palliative care website launchedA WEBSITE has been launched for parents of children with life-limiting illness.

At the launch of the first all-Ireland website dedicated to palliative care for children, par-ents were encouraged to find out more about it and the benefits the approach can bring to both child and family. The site is avail-able at www.cypph.com

The Children and Young People Palliative Care (CYPPC) website was developed by the All-Ireland Institute of Hospice and Pallia-tive Care (AIIHPC).

AIIHPC director Paddie Blaney said: “The palliative care com-munity, both in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland, recognised the need for a ‘go to’ point that parents, carers and the general public could access to get independent information on a topic which is difficult to talk about or gather information on.

“The website includes photos, stories and quotes about real children and parents who are or have availed of palliative care services.”

Kevin has Motivation for life changeKEVIN O’Donoghue reached a desperate point in his life last year when his health was causing him problems on a daily basis.

At 22-years-of-age, the Swords native suffered regularly from chest infections and gastric problems.

Kevin took Gaviscon on a daily basis and was going to his GP regularly.

“I had been sick with gastric problems for a number of months and was frustrated with constantly feeling unwell,” he says.

“I was embarrassed about my size, too. I was approaching 17 stone and it was im-pacting negatively on all aspects of my life.”

Kevin decided to get serious about los-ing weight to see if it would help relieve his health problems, so when he heard of Motivation through a family friend, he made enquiries.

It sounded like the programme would be ideal for him as it suited all his needs.

“The programme was about both losing weight and maintaining weight loss after-wards which was something I had always struggled with before,” he explains.

Kevin started the Motivation programme in Swords in January of this year.

“The programme was easy to follow,” he says.

“I never felt hungry and it never felt like I was on a diet. It just became a way of life and still is.

“The one-to-one consultations were a great help. My advisor was so friendly and genuine.

“In less than 10 months, I’ve gone from obese to a normal and healthy weight.

“My metabolic age has gone from 37 years to 19. In total, I’ve lost over four stone and, more importantly, I’m maintaining it now through monthly maintenance check-ups.

“I haven’t had a single Gaviscon since the first week in Motivation.”

Kevin exercises every day and plays foot-ball with his colleagues which is something he would have been too embarrassed to do before.

“All in all, I would say it has been the best

thing I have ever done and a lot easier than I ever imagined it would be,” he adds.

“I haven’t looked back since starting the programme and I’m never going back to that unhealthy and unhappy 22-year-old.”

Local community reflects on major 2014 successes

as no surprise though, as the vil-lage benefits not only from en-joying an ideal location, but it’s also backboned by an excellent community spirit and a number of hard working local groups.

There was further good news for the community in Raheny during the summer when An Taoiseach Enda Kenny paid a visit to officially open a new Day Hospital in the area.

The Beaumont Hospital Foun-dation (BHF) funded the pur-pose-built medical facility at St Joseph’s Hospital, with an in-vestment of €2.1 million in donor funds.

The facility, which is part of the Beaumont Hospital Campus, provides specialist care for the elderly living in the hospital’s catchment area.

Indeed the year could not have got off to a better start when, in January at the RDS, Paul Clarke, a student at St Paul’s College, was crowned the overall winner of the BT Young Scientist & Tech-nology Exhibition.

Later in the year, Paul and his college were celebrating again when he won second prize at the European Union Contest for Young (EUCYS) Scientists in War-saw.

Paul wasn’t the only local to represent Raheny on the Euro-pean stage, however.

Raheny United’s Ladies’ team represented Ireland in the Wom-en’s UEFA Champions League and reached the last 32 of this

prestigious competition. While the ladies may have

been disappointed not to ad-vance further following their exploits in the earlier rounds, they managed to finish the year on a high with another double on the domestic front – Women’s League of Ireland champions and FAI Cup winners.

The latter trophy was gar-nered earlier this month at the Aviva when the ladies defeated UCD Waves 2-1 after extra time.

Raheny Tidy Village Group also had cause to celebrate when they won a number of awards for their hard work in keeping the village in pristine condition.

These accolades should come

AS we move into the last few months of 2014, locals in Raheny can reflect on a very good year for their tight-knit community.

There are a number of ingre-dients that go into making a community special.

These include quality schools and businesses, voluntary groups working for the greater good of the area, sporting organ-isations providing a recreational outlet for youngsters and adults, a wide range of educational fa-cilities, vital transport links and that good old fashioned commu-nity spirit where people continue to look out for one another.

There is no doubt that Raheny possesses all these ingredients in abundance.

With all that it has going for it, is it any wonder that Raheny is one of the most desirable places in which to live on the North-side. Location, location, location springs to mind!

Countdown to Christmas begins

this time of year. There is great pride in Raheny,

which older residents will remem-ber as being just a tiny village on the outskirts of Dublin.

Those residents would be quick to point out that the Raheny of that era is certainly a far cry from the thriving business community that exists today.

Local residents now enjoy a wealth of shops and businesses, offering everything from a loaf of bread to a full range of financial services.

There is no doubt that Ra-heny has come a long way and Christmas is an opportune time for business owners to thank their loyal customers who have supported them throughout the

year.It’s also an ideal opportunity

for residents to shop local and avail of the many services on of-fer, and at the same time, keep employment levels up in the area.

While there have been many changes in Raheny over the years, this popular area has managed to retain its traditional village feel.

It continues to grow in popular-ity, not only as a successful busi-ness centre but also as a highly desirable residential area.

•Visit Santa’s Grotto at Raheny Scouts’ Den on Friday, November 28 from 6pm to 8pm. There will be presents for all the children. Raheny Business Association (RBA) is sponsoring this event.

IT’S almost that time of year again. Can you believe it?

After another very good sum-mer and pleasant autumn, the dark nights, cold winter morn-ings, and of course, Christmas, has crept up on us once more.

Where did those 12 months go you may ask yourself while flying about the place trying to get a present and cross another dearly loved family member off your lengthy shopping list?

There is so much to do, so much to plan for and you just wish you had a few extra hours in the day and maybe an extra day in the week to keep pace.

Thankfully, local businesses and services are on our doorstep to make life easier at this hectic

time of year and indeed, where we would we be without them.

Yes, the Christmas rush is well and truly on and there is great excitement in the air. Towns and villages across the Northside are busy preparing for this important time of year to ensure that no stone is left unturned in their bid to make this the perfect festive season. There is nothing like the build-up to Christmas to cushion us against a cold, dark winter and in close-knit communities such as Raheny, there is always a great buzz around the place.

Raheny’s popularity continues to grow, and this is in no small measure to the excellent commu-nity spirit that exists there. This is borne out even more around

If you’ve survived 10 years in business, and most of them were during the recession, you must be doing a lot right. That’s certainly the case at the ever-popular River Café, located in Raheny Shopping Centre, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.

The River Café opened its doors in November 2004 and over the last decade has been serving the locals in Raheny and surrounding areas with great distinction. Over that time, its service and range of quality foods and beverages has just got better and better. At River Café, they don’t rest on their laurels – a complete refurbishment including a new menu has seen to that. And indeed, isn’t it very positive to hear that 95% of the food

sold at the River Café is made from scratch on site, with only the remaining 5% purchased from outside.

The catering menu provides great value and all the items are made to the customer’s specifications. A lot of the ingredients used are grown in Helen’s (owner and chef) allotment in Malahide. For example, on day last week they had an orange, yellow and red tomato salad that was grown in Helen’s allotment.

A range of the River Café’s mouthwatering dishes is also available for sale at Supervalu Raheny, Killester and Talbot Street. Also on the varied menu every day are homemade scones, brown bread, chutney, jams, marmalade, salads and lunch specials.

So the next time, you’re in the beautiful village of Raheny, drop

into the River Café. Sit back, take the weight off your feet and

unwind with a splendid cup of coffee and the various delights on offer. You won’t be disappointed!

national Residential Studio. The provision of these studios

was part of Dublin City Council’s Arts Service Plan 2006-2009, in response to the critical lack of working spaces for artists work-ing in Dublin today.

One of the biggest successes at St Anne’s in recent years has been the introduction of the Al-lotments Project by Dublin City Council. Those involved in the project were celebrating recently when the Allotment Garden won Best Allotment/Community Gar-den at the Dublin City Neighbour-hoods Award competition 2014.

A lot of hard work went into winning the award, with local enthusiasts tending to the gar-den and members’ needs in all weathers.

The two-acre site, which was originally used by the Guinness family to grow their own fruit and vegetables, has been divided up into plots of about 64 square metres, with smaller plots of 30 square metres running around the perimeter.

Quite simply, St Anne’s Park is a wonderful attraction for locals and visitors alike.

All year round walkers, jog-gers, and sportspeople use the marvellous facilities at the park.

The Red Stables, which is among these facilities, is locat-ed in the 300 acres of beautiful parkland in St Anne’s.

extremely high and people are very enthusiastic about grow-ing their own food, especially in the current economic situation. Volunteers are always needed to keep the success of the project going.

One of Raheny’s biggest advan-

tages is its location, just a couple of miles from the city centre and on the DART line.

The DART, which was intro-duced in 1984, enables locals and visitors to access amenities with ease. Let’s be honest: most of us would like to have a beach

on our doorstep, especially in the summer. Raheny residents are fortunate in this respect, given the area’s close proximity to Dol-lymount Beach and Bull Island.

The area is also very well served by community groups and sports clubs.

Dream teamSPORT is very important in a large area like Raheny, with local clubs consistently doing great work to foster young tal-ents.

Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club has become synonymous with the area and continues to have a huge membership.

Indeed, the prestigious Ra-heny 5-Mile race has become one of the biggest events in the athletics calendar every year.

Pat and Dick Hooper, two of Ireland’s most celebrated ath-letes, have been instrumental in promoting the race over the years.

Raheny GAA Club is another sporting institution in the area

that boasts a high membership and excellent facilities.

The club has a large club-house located next to the Garda Station in the village. It was built in 1981 and has been extensively modernised and extended in re-cent years. It is now equipped with a bar, hall, dressing rooms and a grand hall for the special occasions like birthday parties and other functions.

Meanwhile successes con-tinue to be recorded on the field for the the club’s many teams.

The Under 15 hurlers/foot-ballers are now being called the ‘Dream Team’. They hit the ground running this year, not only winning the Division 2 League but also taking the

Championship as well. The play-ers put in a tremendous amount of hard work, and praise must also be afforded to Dave Geary and his management team.

Separately, a group compris-ing five players - John Ryan, Kevin Welsh, Fergal Smyth, Col-lie Donegan and Dave McGrath - made history at the club this year when they walked away with silverware for Raheny, playing and winning in the ‘C’ Championship in both codes.

Raheny United Football Club fostering local soccer talent

On completion of a major under-taking in November 2003, Raheny United opened a new clubhouse complete with six dressing rooms, referee’s room, showers, a play-ers’ lounge and function room.

The function room is available for hire for birthday parties, an-niversaries, christenings, work parties, communions, confirma-tions and funeral receptions. The club currently offers FREE room hire and has packages to include Balloons, DJ and catering if you require or you can provide your own.

Meanwhile, Raheny United re-cently installed a state-of-the-art overhead projector and audio sys-tem which has been used by local businesses for product launches, seminars, staff meetings and pres-entations - perfect for baby photos of the birthday boy/girl too! For

In 1983, players from Dunseedy United and their families built the original clubhouse on a com-pletely voluntary basis, making it a club for the community, built by the community.

At that time Dunseedy had no schoolboy section whilst Raheny Boys, 100 yards away, had a thriv-ing schoolboy section but no sen-ior section so a perfect marriage was on the cards and the two clubs joined forces to create Raheny United.

Today, Raheny United boasts an Academy for five and six-year-olds currently catering for 60 boys and girls; 16 schoolboy teams; three senior men’s teams; two Over 35 teams; and of course, its hugely successful Ladies’ Senior team

who are current League of Ireland Champions and won the Women’s FAI Cup for the third year in a row earlier this month in the Aviva Sta-dium.

The Ladies also played in the Women’s UEFA Champions League this season, getting through to the last 32 of the competition which was another fantastic achieve-ment.

The role of honour for the sen-ior sides include: winners of the Leinster Junior Shield, runners-up in the Cullen Cup and winners of the AUL Division 3 Sunday league.

The Over 35s, who compete in the Amateur League, have also won league titles and cups over the years as have various teams in the schoolboys/girls’ section.

RAHENY United was founded in 1994 following an amalgamation between Raheny Boys and Dunseedy United.

The Raheny United Ladies’ team have brought great pride to the community with their recent exploits. ▪

Hardly a day goes by when there isn’t some fundraiser or other being held for the Hospice, and the type of fundraisers are getting more and more imagina-tive.

One of the biggest fundrais-ers that takes place for Hospices nationally, and which includes St Francis, is Ireland’s Biggest Cof-fee Morning. This major event takes place on a chosen day eve-ry September.

People are urged to get out their cups and saucers for this one particular day and raise much-needed funds.

Hospice or palliative care is for patients and their families at the stage in a serious illness where the focus has switched from treatment aimed at cure to ensuring quality of life.

From humble beginnings, St Francis Hospice now offers a wide range of support services to patients, their families and carers - without financial cost to patients.

Raheny Business Association a major asset to community

have gone into making things happen can never be taken for granted.

Past achievements include: •Flowers at all the businesses

in the core village which has spread to Hilltop centre, St As-sam’s shops and The Cedars.

Raheny boasts one of the best in the business (no pun intend-ed!).

In 1988, the year Dublin cel-ebrated its Millennium, the Ra-heny Business Association (RBA) was established by a group of lo-cal business people.

It was a time of recession in Ireland when our biggest export was our educated, young people.

The founding committee had a vision – ‘To Make Raheny a Better Place to Live and Work’.

The efforts put in over the past 26 years have certainly paid divi-dends.

Raheny is a wonderful oasis just three miles from the city centre and has so much going for it including excellent schools, St Anne’s Park, Bull Island Reserve, the beach, the DART, sports clubs and associations, and scouts and guides.

In October 2013, the RBA cele-brated its 25th anniversary at the conference centre in St Francis

Hospice, in conjunction with the Raheny Business Awards.

The RBA’s founding committee of six comprised Pearse Adams, Adams Pharmacy, Maura Phelan (deceased) Phelan & Co Account-ants, Denis Feeney, AIB, Anne-Marie Smith, AM Secretarial Services, Declan Gahan, Gahan Meats, and Dick Hooper, Perma-nent TSB.

On the night a scroll of honour thanked the chairpersons and committee members who gave their time and skills over the 25 years.

The Association continues to prosper which is a tribute to the many business people who have given their time and effort over the years on the committees.

It proves that nothing suc-ceeds better than people work-ing together to achieve a com-mon goal.

The RBA has come along way over the last 26 years and the ef-fort, blood, sweat and tears that

However, there have been en-couraging signs in recent months that we are on the cusp of turning the corner, and hopefully 2015 will see us heading in a more fa-vourable direction economically.

In the meantime, business communities such as Raheny, need our help and there has nev-er been a more important time to support our local traders and play our part in keeping up em-ployment levels in our areas.

Local businesses are always willing to welcome you with a friendly smile, as well as that all important quality service.

In a lot of cases, those serving us from behind the counters are our neighbours, which is another incentive to shop local during these challenging times.

Blossom continues to bloomBLOSSOM Ireland, a Raheny based charity, is continuing to bloom.

Initially founded to provide therapy led summer camps for children with special needs, their service offering now expands to include Easter and Halloween camps and also a very successful weekly yoga class.

The camps are designed and led by an occupational therapist and all camp staff are highly experienced paedi-atric professionals.

Local parents Auveen Bell and Orla Crowe founded the charity. Blossom Ireland recently received €2,500 funding which will be used to set up ‘Blossom Buddies’ play dates for children with an intellectual disability to promote greater social interaction.

They were awarded the funding through KBC Bank Ireland’s ‘Bright Ideas’ com-munity support initiative.

Paul’s Young Scientist triumph celebrated by Raheny college

Business teacher at St Paul’s, Celine McGuinness, said Paul’s achievement would never be forgotten at the college.

“This plaque will serve as an inspiration for all future pupils who grace the hallowed corri-dors of Paul’s alma mater,” said Ms McGuinness.

The entire school came on board to celebrate Paul’s win with teachers and students from the school’s art and music de-partments kept very busy lead-ing up to the event.

Paul will sit his Leaving Certif-icate exams in 2015, after which he plans to go on to study pure mathematics at Cambridge Uni-versity.

Meanwhile, the 51st BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibi-tion is set to break new records, with 2,077 project ideas sub-mitted in October by 4,616 stu-dents.

And letters have been winging their way to schools across the island to break the news about which students have qualified for the exhibition, which takes place at the RDS from January

7-10.Research conducted recently

by BT Young Scientist & Tech-nology Exhibition demonstrated that technology tops the career aspirations of students in Ire-land with 59 per cent of those surveyed saying they would most prefer Mark Zuckerberg’s job.

A life of entrepreneurship was selected ahead of holding the Presidency of the United States with Barack Obama at 19 per cent and the life of a pop star with Miley Cyrus receiving only 13 per cent of votes.

Colm O’Neill, chief executive of BT Ireland, said: “2014 has been a great year for the exhi-bition.

“We reached the 50th mile-stone, and saw both our 2013 and 2014 winners continue our run of international success with prizes in European and interna-tional competitions.

“We’ve now hit a new record with the 51st exhibition, re-ceiving more entries than ever before and giving an unprec-edented number of students an

Paul Clarke beat off thousands of entries from all over the coun-try to win the prestigious prize at the much-celebrated event in the RDS.

Paul took home the top award for his project entitled ‘Contri-butions to cyclic graph theory’.

As part of his prize, he was selected to represent Ireland at the 26th European Union Young Scientist competition which took place in September.

In that competition, Paul came joint second for the same project that won him the nation-al prize.

Local Senator Feargal Quinn paid a special visit to St Paul’s

to pay tribute to the young stu-dent and to perform the official unveiling of a specially commis-sioned plaque to commemorate Paul’s achievement.

The permanent plaque in the school bears the motto ‘Gestis Censere’ – ‘By your deeds you will be judged’.

Paul’s parents, Des and Anne, his close relatives, teaching and secretarial staff, members of the Vincentian community and the school’s board of management attended the ceremony.

Speaking during the celebra-tions, Senator Quinn said Paul was a credit to his family, the school and the entire nation.

LAST month, St Paul’s College, Raheny, held a special ceremony to honour the fantastic achievement of one of its students winning the overall 2014 BT Young Scientist & Technology Award.

event like this cannot be under-estimated.

closed. Food can stay cold in a full refrigerator for up to 24 hours and in a well-packed freezer for up to 48 hours (24 hours if it is half-packed).

• Unplug or turn off most elec-trical items. Leave a light on in a main area so that you’ll know when supply has been restored.

• If using candles, be careful and make sure to extinguish them fully when supply is restored.

The ESB Networks PowerCheck App provides updates on planned and unplanned power supply in-terruptions. The free App is avail-able for iPhones and Android smartphones.

ESB Networks appreciates when customers report a power outage or dangerous situations to their emergency line on 1850-372999. But it’s handy to know what information to give when you call. Have your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) to hand so technicians can identify the exact location of the power interruption. This 11 digit refer-ence number is found on the top right hand side of your electricity bill. If homeowners have any spe-cial needs or use electricity for medical equipment, they need to contact their supplier directly who will arrange to put them on the ESB Networks medical regis-ter.

Homeowners are also advised to:

• Check flashlights and bat-

tery-powered portable radios to ensure that they are working and have spare batteries. A radio is an important source of weather and emergency information dur-ing adverse weather conditions.

• Keep phones and portable de-vices fully charged at all times.

• If homeowners have electric gates, they should ensure they can be opened and closed in the event of a loss of supply.

• ESB Networks also urges homeowners to download the PowerCheck App or check www.esbnetworks.ie for updates.

• Check on elderly neighbours or people living alone.

• If you notice any damage to the electricity network like bro-ken poles or fallen wires, don’t go near them. Report it to 1850-372999 and it’ll be prioritised.

• Keep your fridge and freezer

CUts to power supplies are rare these days but when they do hap-pen homeowners need to know how to cope and how to find out when it’ll be restored.

Green with envy in an on-trend home

Q: Hi Neville, I love to follow the next big fashion trends and have been seeing lots of unu-sual and beautiful shades of green in magazines and in the shops.

I really like the idea of incorpo-rating green into the colour pal-ette of my home but am unsure what shade would work best. Any recommendations you can give

liance and Pot Plant from Crown Paint’s Breatheasy Matt emulsion range.

These statement shades are really on-trend and will make a dramatic impact in any home. These colours would work best in a sitting-room or study setting as they are warm and inviting shades, exactly the kind of at-mosphere you want to create in this environment.

If you find the prospect of painting a whole room in such a striking colour too daunting, try to introduce the shade to the room slowly, beginning first with a feature wall and then, if you are happy with the results, you can continue.

To make the most of these beautiful shades of green, com-plement the room by incorporat-ing other earthy tones and tex-tures. Dark wooden furnishings will look stunning alongside this backdrop and will give your home the ultimate stylish finish.

I hope this helps and happy decorating!

me would be much appreciated.

A: It’s clear you have your finger on the fashion pulse. Green is making a serious comeback, not only on the fashion catwalks but also on the interior décor scene.

Typically I would be wary of fashion trends that can come and go so easily but with such a diverse range of soothing and or-ganic shades to choose from, rest assured, this is no fashion fad - green is here to stay.

Before you spend time con-templating and choosing the perfect colour, it’s essential to select the room you will use it in first. Different shades will work significantly better in particular settings and this is a crucial step in the design process.

Green can sometimes be seen as too muddy for the interior of a house but with Crown’s brilliant variety of shades on offer there is something for every environment in your home.

Bamboo Leaf from Crown Paints Kitchen and Bathroom range, for example, is a soft tone of green that would work wonderfully in a kitchen setting where airiness is a primary goal

Grow It Yourself: tips for the garden

leading restaurants, hotels, pubs, cafés, food shops and cookery schools - to showcase the very best that Irish food has to offer.

This was real food delivered at an unimaginable scale and re-sulted in 22,000 very satisfied customers and 400 very happy food producers (well, over 35,000 Waterford blaas were consumed, 2,000 kilos of Irish farmhouse cheese and 9,000 pots of yo-ghurt). Standing in the lunch area, my overwhelming feeling was that I was very proud indeed to be Irish as I watched people from around the world enjoying our food. And why wouldn’t they enjoy it?

My plate of lunch included cheese from Toonsbridge and Ar-dsallagh, Tipperary Hereford beef, venison and wild boar, pickled cu-cumbers from Ballymaloe, Irish Lamb Stew – not exactly standard conference fare.

Bottom line – Web Summit brings over 22,000 people to Ire-land from over 100 countries, in-cluding over 1,000 journalists and 200 giants of the web world and we’ve sent them home with an in-credibly favourable opinion of our food. Hats off to Margaret Jeffares and Rory O’Connell from Ballyma-loe for an awe-inspiring job.

Things To Do This Week – VenTilaTion in The Poly-Tunnel anD greenhouse

As the cold weather and lower light conditions draw in, it’s im-portant to close up the doors of your greenhouse or polytunnel to keep the heat in there as much as possible. However, try and give the polytunnel/greenhouse a good airing on fine dry days. Open up the doors and let air circulate - this will help to stop disease developing, particularly downy mildew which can be a big issue in the winter months.

On days where you do open up the doors make sure to close them again at night to retain whatever heat is in there.

The scale of the event, its ambi-tion and its stratospheric growth were simply staggering to behold. Reverting to type, my main inter-est was in the food so the fact that attendees were so well fed while there really blew my mind.

The summit has the not incon-siderable challenge of providing lunch for 22,000 people for the three days. It would be tempting, I’m sure, to take the easy option – focus on the quantity and the

logistics of such an undertaking, rather than on the quality.

But to their great credit (and perhaps down to Paddy Cos-grave’s farm upbringing), Web Summit went another route by re-cruiting Good Food Ireland to take on the job.

The organisation brought together 400 of its members - food producers (bakers, farmers, cheese makers, craft brewers and more) and chefs from Ireland’s

There’s an old saying about winter seed sowing: “One for the Mouse, One for the Crow, One to Rot and One to Grow”.

It hints at the fact that sowing seeds at this time of the year can be a hit and miss affair, so you should sow some extra ones in case of some mishaps. This ap-plies particularly for overwinter-ing bean and pea seeds.
