Surprise as O’Toole opts out of election

2004 Local Elections he secured almost 4,500 first preference votes – 33 per cent of the total cast in the Artane ward.

This was the second highest vote achieved by any candidate in the State.

Cllr O’Toole said he had been discussing his decision “on and off” with party headquarters since the last general election.

“I will be continuing to work (on Dublin City Council) with the thousands of constituents who have given me such great sup-port over the years,” he told Northside People.

The current Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin conceded that his deci-sion not to bid for a seat in the new constituency of Dublin Bay North would “probably” come as a surprise to his supporters.

Sinn Féin will be standing two candidates in the constituency – Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha and Cllr Denise Mitchell.

Both represent the Beaumont-Donaghmede Local Electoral Area (LEA) on Dublin City Coun-cil and were selected at a party convention.

Cllr O’Toole (67) has contested

five general elections, the first in 1992 in what was then the con-stituency of Dublin North East.

Many would have viewed Cllr O’Toole as a very good prospect to claim a seat this time around, especially given the party’s show-ing in various opinion polls over the last 12 months.

Also, Dublin Bay North is a five-seater and Cllr O’Toole nar-rowly missed out in Dublin North East in 2011 when just three seats were available.

elected a TD in 2011 but unfortu-nately it was not to be. I was dis-appointed, but very pleased with the splendid vote I received.

“I do not regret one minute of it (contesting the general elec-tions) and it was a privilege to help build up Sinn Féin and work with communities throughout this constituency.

“Now it’s time to move on and Cllrs Denise Mitchell and Mícheál Mac Donncha have my full confi-dence and support.”

Cllr O’Toole said he was con-fident that his many supporters would automatically transfer their votes to the two other Sinn Féin candidates.

“In the last two local elections the transfer pattern between Sinn Féin candidates was excel-lent,” he stated.

“I have no doubt that Cllr De-nise Mitchell and Cllr Mícheál Mac Donncha will be well in the running to take two seats in Dub-lin Bay North.”

Cllr O’Toole believes that if he had been elected a TD he would have given communities in his area a “really effective and re-sponsive” local voice in the Dáil.

“As part of the Sinn Féin Dáil team I would have provided very effective opposition to auster-ity, putting real alternatives for-ward,” he added.

“I will remain a very active city councillor and I look forward to working with two Sinn Féin TDs in Dublin Bay North.”

Following his selection, Cllr Mac Donncha, who will be con-testing his first general election, said the party was working for a “historic breakthrough”.

“We are out to end once and for all the two-and-a-half party system that has seen Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour dominate in this constituency and through-

out the State for decades,” he told Northside People.

“Those days are over. We are standing two candidates to win two seats for Sinn Féin in Dublin Bay North.

“That way we can help ensure that the next Government in this State, for the first time ever, is not led by either Fine Gael or Fi-anna Fáil.”

Cllr Mac Donncha added: “In-stead we can have a Government led by Sinn Féin with progressive policies based on fairness and equality.”

Cllr Mitchell, who will also be contesting her first general elec-tion, said: “I am proud to rep-

resent our communities in this constituency who have borne the worst of austerity and who are fighting back, as seen in the campaign against the water charges.

“The housing crisis and the need to abolish water charges and reverse unemployment are the big issues that have to be confronted.”

Cllr Mitchell added: “In the next Dáil, people in Dublin Bay North need genuine community-based TDs, committed to real po-litical change with a campaign-ing party that is determined to deliver for our communities in Government.”

People Before Profit announces candidateAT Parnell’s GAA Club, Coolock, last Wednesday night (March 25), People Before Profit announced that Cllr John Lyons will contest the next general election in the Dublin Bay North constituency.

United Left TD Clare Daly launched Cllr Lyons’ campaign and spoke of the need for a “radical shake-up” at the election.

Cllr Lyons said that during the past year he has witnessed first-hand the coming together through the water charges movement of all those adversely affected by austerity over the past six years.

He believes it has the potential to “transform” society in a radi-cal direction, towards a situation where the policies proposed and implemented by politicians in the years ahead truly put people before profit:

“There has been an unbelievable politicisation and radicalisa-tion of hundreds of thousands of people over the past 12 months,” he said.

“We in People Before Profit believe that we must build in paral-lel with the water charges movement a radical left-wing alliance that is rooted in every community across the country, an alliance that can challenge the ruling elite and demand not only the abolition of the water charges and local property taxes but also a major programme of social housing construction and a fairer redistribution of the wealth in society.”

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has announced that Louise O’Reilly will be its candidate in the Dublin Fingal constituency at the next election.

Ms O’Reilly is a full-time SIPTU organiser and a lifelong trade union activist.

Top speller shows his words’ worth A NORTHSIDE boy is looking forward to participating in the provincial section of a national spelling competition after win-ning first prize in the Dublin heat.

Jean-Ted Deliver (12), a pupil at St Patrick’s Boys’ National School, Drumcondra, won his heat in the 2015 Eason Spelling Bee compe-tition. A total of 84 spelling en-thusiasts from around the county competed.

Jean-Ted will be hoping to spell more danger for his opponents in the provincials and land a place in the overall final in June.

The four provincial winners will battle it out to be crowned the 2015 Eason Spelling Bee Champi-on. A total of 1,100 schools from all 32 counties entered this year’s competition.

School children from all over Ireland are reciting words from the dictionary in a bid to become the nation’s top speller.

Over the last couple of years, some of the most difficult words spelled correctly by Eason Spell-ing Bee winners include: pragma-tism, malapropism, pantomime, pontificate and bibliography.

Brendan Corbett, Group Head UN-BEE-LIEVABLE: Jean-Ted Deliver won the Dublin County

heat in the national spelling competition.▪

of Marketing at Eason, said this year’s competition is set to be the most exciting yet.

“We continue to be more amazed each year by the incred-

ible talent in each school and by the motivation and determina-tion shown by these children,” said Mr Corbett.

“Spelling is a great way to open

up the sphere of learning in a fun way and help to develop reading and literacy skills.

“We can’t wait to meet all of this year’s ‘bees’.”

YOU’D imagine that if the Govern-ment had a plan to strong-arm anti-water charges protesters into submission, they’d at least have the cop-on to keep it under wraps until after the general election.

Obviously, the Fine Gael/Labour coalition has learned little from the mistakes made when Irish Water was first established. When former Environ-ment Minister Phil Hogan suggested last year that those who refused to pay their water bills would have their pressure reduced to a trickle, it had an inflam-matory effect on the public’s fragile tolerance for austerity.

People of all ages – some of whom had never taken part in a protest in their lives – found themselves chanting anti-Government slogans on the streets with tens of thousands of others. This was no longer just about money: the Government was now threatening to remove a basic human right and had succeeded in turning water charges into a highly-charged, emotive issue.

Changes announced in last year’s

budget did little to quell public anger and the Government was eventually forced into a partial climb-down on some of the more contentious aspects of water charges. No more requirement for PPS numbers; a standard charge for most of this decade; an ironically named ‘water conservation grant’ of €100 per household; and, most importantly, the threat to disconnect or reduce water supply to homes was dropped.

While the anti-water charges protests continued, Government TDs and min-isters hoped the measures had taken some of the heat out of the controversy. On the other hand, anti-austerity par-ties believed the concessions repre-sented the beginning of the end for Irish Water.

Figures suggest that two thirds of potential Irish Water ‘customers’ have now registered. Not exactly full compli-ance but certainly heading in the right direction. How many of them actually end up paying their bills will be another matter.

So while the softly, softly approach seemed to be working, last week we heard reports of proposed Government measures to bring defaulters to heel.

ANGER: there have been anti-water charges protests throughout the country. FILE PHOTO▪

Government seems to have a death wish on water charges

opinion >>

There was talk of far-reaching legisla-tion to introduce fast-tracked District Court sessions that would result in unpaid water bills being deducted from people’s wages or social welfare pay-ments.

The good news, however, is that this wouldn’t be happening until some time in 2016. My question is this: with a general election now just one year away, why didn’t the Government keep its powder dry on such bully-boy proposals

until after polling day?I can only conclude that Fine Gael and

Labour have a political death wish when it comes to water charges. Yet again, they have given the electorate a very large stick to beat them with.

Lack of funds delays cycleway Joe O’Brien, the Green Party’s

candidate in Dublin Fingal for thenext general election, has calledon the council to explain whathappened to an initial allocationof €750,000 that was agreed forthe project.

Mr O’Brien said it has beenfive years since the money wasallocated by the Department ofTransport.

“Bar some small sections be-tween Balbriggan and Balrothery,we have still to see any work be-ing carried out of the ground forthe cycleway,” he told Northside

People.“At this stage I would have to

question commitment levels tothe project. In particular, I wouldbe concerned about the fundingsituation for the project and howmuch has been spent on the Com-pulsory Purchase Orders (CPO).”

Mr O’Brien said the project isjust one key leg in what shouldbe a cycleway that will run all theway from Balbriggan to Sutton.

It would take in Ardgillan, Sker-ries, Rush, Donabate, NewbridgeHouse, Rogerstown and Broad-meadow estuaries and Malahide

FINGAL County Council has responded to criticism of its commit-ment to construct a cycleway between Balbriggan and Skerries.

“I think if we can get the Sker-ries to Balbriggan link completed, both the public and the councilwill begin to see the huge returnsthat cycleways have been provento bring to local communities andeconomies.”

A spokeswoman for FingalCounty Council said that in early2010 it entered into a ProjectFunding Agreement with the Na-

tional Transport Authority (NTA)to provide €750,000 in grant-aidtowards the design and construc-tion of the cycleway.

“Between 2010 and the end ofDecember 2012, €503,000 wasspent on the planning, design andconstruction of the Balrothery toBalbriggan section of the cycle-way,” she told Northside People.

“In 2013, the estimated costof completing the scheme was€500,000.

“However, neither Fingal Coun-ty Council nor the NTA were in aposition to provide the necessaryadditional €250,000. The councilis currently funding land acquisi-tion and associated costs. FingalCounty Council served the lastremaining notices for the CPO inDecember 2014.”

However, the spokeswomansaid at present there were insuf-ficient funds to allow construc-tion to resume.

“At the end of each year, FingalCounty Council enters into discus-sions with the NTA with a view tofunding projects for the followingyear,” she stated. “Unfortunatelythe NTA indicated that no fund-ing would be available in 2014 or2015 for the Skerries to Balbrig-gan Cycleway.”

The council will shortly engagea consulting engineer to amendthe design drawings and put thescheme on public display.

“This is a fantastic collection of jerseys with a very touching story behind it,” said Mr McLean.

“The exhibition is a great wel-come to Ireland and we hope it will be a talking point and gener-ate interest for passengers arriv-ing into T2.”

Pieta House is closely associat-ed with the 3Ts suicide prevention charity, which was daa’s charity partner in 2011.

Staff raised €225,000 for sui-cide prevention through a range of fundraising initiatives that year. At the unveiling of the jer-sey collection, Gary Kinsella de-scribed it as a very special day for his family and a fitting tribute to their late brother, Jonathan.

“We’re thrilled the jerseys are on display in T2 for passengers to enjoy,” said Gary.

“The real message for us is to raise awareness about self-harm, suicide prevention and the excel-lent work carried out by Pieta House in that regard.”

The display of jerseys is sup-ported by the GAA who provided the colourful backdrop to the ex-hibition installation.

The exhibition is located in T2 on the arriving journey just be-fore the Garda Immigration area and passengers are encouraged to take a photo of their county jersey and tweet to @DublinAir-port and @officialgaa using the hashtag #DUB32

Jim takes on new challengeCYCLE Against Suicide is set to make its biggest impact yet in towns and communities across Ireland.

This week, founder of the movement, Jim Breen, will take on the mammoth task of running the entire route of the annual cycle, some 1,400kms, four weeks prior to the main event.

Run for Cycle Against Suicide will encourage people everywhere to register for this year’s event, which starts on April 27, volunteer to help, or provide a homestay for the thousands of cyclists taking part in the main cycle.

It will also help access new communities, delivering the message that ‘it’s ok to not feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help’.

Registering can be done online by visiting www.cycleagainstsui-cide.com and clicking the ‘register now’ button at the top of the home page.

Jim Breen will run from the Phoenix Park on Monday, March 30, clocking up an average of 50km (31 miles) each day.

He will be joined along the route by well-known faces from the sporting world, including international athlete Sonia O’Sullivan and motivational speaker and runner, Gerry Duffy.

Mr Breen said that since its foundation three years ago, Cycle Against Suicide has made incredible in-roads into breaking the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland.

“We have met with communities across the length and breadth of Ireland, all of whom have reached out to us with open arms,” he said.

“However, we are acutely aware of people we have not yet made contact with and the run is designed to do just that.

“By accessing new audiences, we will make more people aware of the supports that are available to them in their own communities.”

Successful conclusion to GAA jersey campaign

highlighted the story of two Coolock brothers who started an ambitious fundraising ven-ture dedicated to the memory of their sibling who took his own life in 2011.

Jonathan Kinsella was just 27-years-of-age when he tragically died on May 28, 2011,

As Jonathan was a big Dublin GAA fan, his brothers Ian (23) and Gary (27) came up with the idea of collecting a signed jersey from the GAA panels of every county in Ireland, plus one from London and New York who have both ap-peared in the All-Ireland Champi-onship.

The brothers were successful in their ‘32 County Jersey’ campaign and auctioned the shirts to raise funds for Pieta House.

The Dublin Airport Authority purchased the jerseys at a fund-raising event and is delighted to now have them on display.

Dublin Airport Head of Opera-tions, Gary McLean, said he was particularly pleased to showcase such a unique display of GAA jer-seys at Terminal 2.

Biker Andrew revs up for fundraising adventure

Andrew Dunne, from Don-aghmede, is preparing his engine again for this year’s 1,000-kilo-metre Motorbike Around Ireland trip to raise money for Down Syn-drome Ireland (DSI).

‘Rev-Up4DSI 2015’ will take place from May 2-4. This is the 10th anniversary of the event, and it will be Andrew’s ninth time to participate.

Andrew, who works as a Senior Cabin Crew member with Aer Lin-gus, said: “In previous years, my son, Lonan Dunne, who is a fifth year student at Mount Temple Comprehensive School, Malahide Road, joined me on the trips, spending between eight and 10 hours on the saddle. This year I will be riding solo.

“There will be approximately 150 bikers from around the coun-try, plus pillion passengers taking part, along with a crew of me-chanics and repair vans, to look after us on our journey.

“The route is undisclosed to participants until the day of the event.”

Andrew is no stranger to fun-draising. When he lived in Berlin from 1985-1992, he ran the Berlin Marathon and the Berlin French 25km run, and raised funds for Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Chil-dren, Crumlin.

“Also, I lived in Boston from 1992-1999 and during that time I raised money for the Brain Re-search Foundation and the Blind Council participating in both the Great Wall of China and their Am-

Social housing funding welcomed by McVerryThe Peter McVerry Trust has welcomed the lat-est round of funding for social housing projects under the Capital Assistance Scheme.

Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly, has instructed local authorities to invite applications from approved housing bodies for the construc-tion and/or acquisition of units to provide social housing for people with special needs.

Chief executive of the housing and homeless charity, Pat Doyle, welcomed Minister Kelly’s an-nouncement. “The Peter McVerry Trust welcomes this latest round of funding under the Capital Assistance Scheme,” he said. “We recognise that this announcement is further progress towards increasing social housing output and delivering

on the Minister’s commitment to meeting the housing needs of vulnerable households such as those in homeless services.”

Mr Doyle added: “The 2015 budget allocation of €71 million is up significantly on the €46 million made available in 2014.

“Peter McVerry Trust is glad to see that once again this year’s scheme is open to both new build projects and acquisition of existing units, as acquisition can often have faster turnaround times and will help meet acute housing need in a shorter timeframe.”

The Peter McVerry Trust secured €2.4 million in funding under the Capital Assistance Scheme in 2014 for a total of 24 units in Dublin City and Fingal.

Snappers across Dublin are focused on fundraiser

Organised by the Irish Pro-fessional Photographers’ Asso-ciation (IPPA) and sponsored by Canon Ireland, National Portrait Week began on March 28 and will run until April 6.

Throughout the week, mem-bers of the public can donate €25 to LauraLynn and in return they

will receive an individual mini portrait session and a desktop print (7x5in) from an IPPA pho-tographer.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Christy Burke launched the event at the Mansion House last week with lo-cal photographers. “I am delight-ed to lend my support to the IPPA

FOR one week, Ireland’s top portrait photographers are offering people across Dublin the opportunity to create memories to last a lifetime and raise much needed funds for Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, LauraLynn.

National Portrait Week,” said the Lord Mayor.

“It is great to see Dublin’s pro-fessional photographers give up their time and expertise for such a worthy charity, LauraLynn, while giving the people of Dublin an opportunity to get a top qual-ity portrait of a family member in return for their donation.”

IPPA President Brendan Lyon, from Clontarf, said: “Nationwide, over 60 IPPA photographers will be taking part this year.

“As all IPPA members are qual-ified, insured and professional, the week is a fantastic opportu-nity to capture a beautiful por-trait of a family member whilst also supporting a very worthy charity.

“We are delighted that Ire-land’s Children’s Hospice, Lau-raLynn, are our charity partner this year. All money raised will go directly to LauraLynn.”

LauraLynn provides care for children with life-limiting condi-tions and their families by pro-viding home support, respite, crisis and end-of-life care.

Professional photographer Denise Cannon, from Design-

Works Photography, based in Skerries, is among those offering her services for the event.

Ms Cannon said the fundraiser is for a wonderful cause.

“We’re thrilled to be doing this again,” she said. “This will be our ninth year volunteering and we’ve raised a lot of money for a lot of great charities over the years thanks to the support of our wonderful clients and local people.” Ms Cannon held events at the Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords, and at her own studio in Skerries last week, and will hold another one on Saturday, April 11 at Scotch Hall Shopping Centre in Drogheda.

Jane Flynn, LauraLynn Head of Marketing, said “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the char-ity partner for National Portrait Week 2015.

“With no direct Government funding for LauraLynn hospice services, we rely entirely on the generosity of fundraisers such as National Portrait Week to keep our doors open.”

To take part in the event you can purchase a €25 voucher from LauraLynn or make an appoint-ment with a participating pho-tographer in your county.

Teacher support allocation for children with Down Syndrome

While there are expected to be some additional costs aris-ing from this decision, Minister O’Sullivan made it clear that any additional costs during 2015 would be met from within the existing budgetary allocation for 2015.

Dublin Bay North TD Finian Mc-Grath (Ind) welcomed the news.

“I have been pushing this mat-ter for many years and it was my bill - Down Syndrome (Equality of Access) Bill - that led to this change,” said Deputy McGrath.

“The Government did not op-pose my bill and now it’s being implemented.

“I welcome that but the fight still goes on for all children with a disability.”

Deputy McGrath said he would like to thank the parents and other Independent TDs for their great support on the issue.Local Fianna Fáil Senator Averil Power also welcomed the an-nouncement.

“I have been working with Down Syndrome Ireland on this issue for the past two years and lobbied the Minister (O’Sullivan) on their behalf,” said Senator Power.

“I am delighted their campaign has been successful. I understand that 500 to 1,000 children will benefit from the decision.”

The Government has agreed that additional resources will be allocated to schools as an in-terim measure to support those children with Down Syndrome who are not already supported through the National Council for Special Education’s (NCSE) an-nual allocation process.

Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, is intro-ducing the measure now in rec-ognition of the length of time it will take to introduce the new resource teacher model recom-mended by the NCSE.

Under the interim measure schools will receive 2.5 resource teacher hours per week for each qualifying child.

These supports are being pro-vided in recognition of the fact that children with Down Syn-drome experience a cluster of difficulties relating to this syn-drome, in addition to general learning difficulties, including speech and language develop-mental delays.

These interim allocations will remain in place until the pro-posed new model for allocating teaching supports to children with special education needs comes into force.

In early February, it was an-nounced that it had not been possible to address fully some of the concerns relating to that new model, in time for it to be imple-mented from September 2015.

The Department of Education and Skills is currently working to devise a pilot of the new model, which schools could opt into on a voluntary basis.

Minister O’Sullivan said she had the opportunity over re-cent weeks to meet with Down Syndrome Ireland, and different groups of parents of children with Down Syndrome.

“It has been clear to me that the cluster of difficulties which children with Down Syndrome face, require that some addi-tional teaching supports be made available,” she said.

“Over the next couple of years, we will pilot and then implement a new model of allocating sup-ports that will remove the need for parents to pay for assess-ments, and for children to receive a diagnosis in order to receive additional teaching support.

“In the meantime, I have decid-ed that the needs of children with Down Syndrome are sufficient to warrant an interim allocation.”

NEWS that additional resource teaching support is to be allocated for children with Down Syndrome has been welcomed locally.

Free GP care for over 70s is a step closerTHE Cabinet’s approval of a new Bill to provide a universal GP service for everyone over the age of 70 has been welcomed.

Subject to the legislation being passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas, the Department of Health plans to have the service for over 70s in place in the second quarter of this year.

This would coincide with the introduction of free GP care for children under six.

Fine Gael local area representative Stephanie Regan has wel-comed the news.

“That our youngest and oldest citizens will be entitled to free care from their local doctors is a hugely positive step,” said Ms Regan.

“It is a significant step on the way towards universal health care.“There are 36,000 over 70 year-olds living in this country who

don’t have either a medical card or GP card. This legislation, once introduced, will be of enormous benefit to these people.

“I feel strongly that our most vulnerable should be protected and nurtured, and offering free GP care offers great comfort to these people and their families.”

Alan Farrell, a Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, also welcomed the announcement.

“Many older people in the north county will benefit from the introduction of a free GP service for the over 70s and will be able to focus on their health without having to worry about the cost of visiting a doctor,” he said.

‘I Used To Live Here’FILM REVIEWSOMETIMES a strong lead per-formance can carry a film. On other occasions a solid story or a sharp-eyed director is needed.

In the case of writer/director Frank Berry’s feature, ‘I Used To Live Here’, all three are present.

The film tells the story of 13-year-old Amy Keane who lives with her father Raymond in Tal-laght.

Since losing her mother to ill-ness three years ago, Amy has taken over much of the running of the house.

But when Raymond’s ex-girl-friend reappears with her baby, Amy feels displaced and trou-bled.

Then news breaks that a local boy has taken his own life, and we begin to witness the effect this tragedy has on Amy and on other young people in the com-munity.

After completing his award-winning documentary ‘Ballymun Lullaby’, director Frank Berry wanted to repeat the process of making a film within a tight-knit community.

The idea for this movie came from a series of Irish Times arti-cles written by Dr Tony Bates of Headstrong.

Dr Bates’ ‘Mind Moves’ col-umn, dealt with the phenomenon of suicide clusters and the ripple effect that the suicide of one per-son can have on other young peo-ple in the neighbourhood.

Berry spent months working with the adults and children of the Killinarden Community Cen-tre in Tallaght, first as observer, then by leading acting workshops using scenes from his script.

The majority of the cast are non-professionals, and for the two young leads, Jordanne Jones and Dafhyd Flynn, the film was their first experience of acting.

Despite the fact that the film won Best First Feature award at the 2014 Galway Film Festival, it doesn’t feel like a first time any-thing.

You get the impression the people who made this film really

care about the subject matter, something that shines through what could have been a very bleak experience.

The two leads, especially Jones, turn in compelling performances and will surely emerge as stars in the years to come.

This is an accomplished and moving film that we score 4 out of 5 stars.

Daithí Ó Riain

Remembering the great Dan Donnelly

learned the stories of her tor-ture.

Inspired by these stories, Dan decided to do what he could to fight against injustice.

Standing over six feet and weighing 14 stone, Dan was an impressive figure and soon be-came a champion of the Dublin working class.

Legends began to grow of how Dan Donnelly fearlessly defended the vulnerable against the crimi-nals who preyed on dockside communities. His growing repu-tation began to make others jeal-ous.

Dan was challenged by a Dub-lin boxer known as ‘Champion of the City’.

At first he refused to fight, feel-ing he had nothing to prove. But his challenger was relentless.

Eventually, Dan agreed and a fight was organised on the banks of the Grand Canal. Following a brutal contest, lasting 16 rounds, Dan beat the challenger to the ground and was declared the new ‘Champion of the City’.

Around this time, a boxing en-thusiast named Captain William

Kelly was searching Ireland for a fighter who could reclaim Ire-land’s reputation as a country of brave warriors.

His search led him to Dan Donnelly, who he convinced to become a professional prize fighter.

Kelly organised Donnelly’s first fight against the prominent Eng-lish boxer Tom Hall.

The fight took place at Belch-er’s Hollow at the Curragh in County Kildare and was attended by 20,000 people. It was viewed in Ireland as a as a chance to strike a blow against England and Donnelly didn’t disappoint. During the gruelling fight, Don-nelly delivered a smashing blow to Hall’s ear, and Hall refused to continue.

To celebrate Dan’s great victory for Ireland, Belcher’s Hollow was renamed ‘Donnelly’s Hollow’.

Dan’s next fight took place on December 13 1815, against the English champion George Coop-er.

The fight drew a massive crowd of an estimated 30,000 and Dan’s reputation as a symbol of Irish

national resistance continued to grow.

Cooper was a formidable op-ponent, but in the 11th round, Donnelly delivered a powerful right hand that broke Cooper’s jaw, and ended the fight.

As Dan marched victoriously to the top of the Donnelly’s Hol-low, his supporters followed him, embedding his footsteps into the landscape and forming a local landmark which can still be seen today, known as ‘The Steps of Strength and Fame’.

Following the success of his fights, Dan opened a number of pubs in Dublin, but unfortunately the drink would be his undoing. On February 18 1820, Dan Don-nelly died aged just 32.

But that wasn’t the end of his story. Following a massive fu-neral, Dan was laid to rest in the Bully’s Acre, one of Dublin’s old-est graveyards.

Several nights later, his body was stolen and sold to a Dublin surgeon named Hall.

Riots broke out across Dublin and Hall was forced to return the body, but not before removing

Donnelly’s right arm.Hall preserved the arm in lead

paint and sent it to Edinburgh University, where it was studied for many years after by medical students.

Since then Donnelly’s arm has been on display in various pubs across Ireland, and remains on show today as the centre piece of the ‘Fighting Irishmen Exhibi-tion’.

DAN Donnelly was born in Townsend Street in the heart of Dublin’s Docklands in March 1788.

The Donnellys were a large family, carving out an existence at a time when Dublin’s working class lived in abject poverty.

As soon as Dan was old enough he followed his father to work as a carpenter in an effort to pro-vide for his family.

Young Dan was greatly influ-enced by the United Irishmen. While working at Connery’s tim-ber yard on John Rogerson’s Quay, Dan became friends with a brother of Anne Devlin, and he

Local woman makes mini marathon appeal

Zoe Woodward, from Balgrif-fin, is urging women to join Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s ‘One in 1,000’ campaign for the June bank holi-day Monday event.

Zoe is hoping that one thou-sand women will come together and help raise vital funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.

The event is open to all levels of fitness with women permitted to run, jog or walk the 10K.

“I’ve been involved in the ‘One in 1,000’ campaign for Cystic Fi-brosis Ireland for five years now,” Zoe told Northside People.

“It’s really moving to see so many people taking part for the cause and caring about cystic fibrosis. “These are people who are both directly and indirectly affected by cystic fibrosis but who all come together to raise in-credible awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.

“The day really does have a fantastic feelgood factor too with everyone coming together, hav-ing fun and making lots of new friends.”

Zoe added: “It’s a great rea-

Philip Watt, chief executive of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, is also calling on women to get behind the appeal.

“Cystic fibrosis affects more than 1,200 children and adults all over Ireland,” said Mr Watt.

“While there have been posi-tive steps in developing new treatments and providing appro-priate facilities, we still have a long, long way to go.”

Mr Watt said fundraising is a vital source of the organisation’s income.

“We hope to reach our target

of 1,000 participants and make 2015 the best year yet for the campaign,” he added.

“If each woman taking part raises €100, we will reach a fund-raising target of €100,000.

To register for the campaign, contact Cystic Fibrosis Ireland on LoCall 1890 311 211, email [email protected] or visit www.cfireland.ie. The closing date for registration is Friday, April 17.

Dublin Airport announces a new €20m airfield project

The €20 million project, which is located to the northern end of the airfield, is the largest single capital investment at Dublin Air-port since the opening of Termi-nal 2 in 2010.

The extra aircraft parking spaces are required due to the significant growth in traffic at Dublin Airport over the past three years.

Passenger numbers at the air-port increased by 8 per cent to 21.7 million last year and have risen by 16 per cent since 2011.

Dublin Airport managing di-rector Vincent Harrison said: “This is a major construction project, which will create 10 ex-tra aircraft parking stands and help the airport expand further over the medium term.

“We are constantly investing to maintain and improve the air-field area for our airline custom-ers and also to improve and up-grade the passenger experience throughout the airport.

Beach maintenance boost for Balbriggan is welcomed

Local councillor Tony Murphy (Ind) said he has been given an undertaken that Irish Rail’s plans for cutting the beach embank-ment will be synchronised with the council’s own maintenance timetable.

Also, Cllr Murphy has encour-aged Irish Rail to enhance the beach entrance to the tunnel, and it is hoped that a project will be carried out in conjunction with a local youth group.

The station wall facing the beach has also been earmarked for an upgrade and a clean up to remove graffiti.

Cllr Murphy said he is very pleased that this work will take place.

“I have a vision of how Balbrig-gan beach and harbour should look, and with the continued support of Fingal County Council and Irish Rail, I feel this can be achieved in a reasonable time-

Joy Murray and Dominic Buckley, from Irish Rail, for their support on this issue.

“Balbriggan is one of the few towns where a train stops over-looking the beach and therefore, it is important that the surround-ing area looks as best as it pos-sibly can for visitors to our town and the local community,” he added.

square metres, which is equiva-lent in size to 15 football pitches or a space big enough to park 900 cars.

The first phase of the project, which is currently underway, involves two months of earth moving and drainage work af-ter which contractors will begin laying the concrete that forms the top layer of the new parking area.

The parking stand project also includes the replacement and upgrading of drainage infra-structure, and the provision of underground surface water at-tenuation and storage.

These environmental meas-ures will ensure that all surface water run-off from the new park-ing stands will be collected and released in a controlled and carefully managed way back into the local water system.

Mr Harrison added: “We take our environmental responsi-bilities very seriously and this project will be delivered to the highest environmental stand-ards.”

The construction work is being carried out by Clare Civil Engi-neering, which will have up to 30 construction staff on site at any one time.

Get rid of stress and anxietyMOST of us feel stress or anxious at different times in our lives: looking for work, an exam, moving house, giving a presentation/speech, social situations, relationships etc.

Stress can come from a situation that makes us feel nervous or overwhelmed.

Anxiety can come from feelings of fear, worry and constant nega-tive thinking. Stress and anxiety can come and go.

However, if you are feeling helpless overwhelmed, unable to concentrate or focus; having difficulty coping with life, then it is time to get help. If you are avoiding situations or events because of irra-tional fears or constant worrying, it is time to do something about it.

How do you know if you are stressed or anxious? Muscle ache, headaches, stomach upset, palpitations, dizziness, rapid breathing, tiredness, sweating, diarrhea...

Often we cannot sleep, our blood pressure rises and we are constantly thinking the worst; feeling irritable, angry, sad, restless and/or insecure.

This can lead to avoidance, overeating, drinking too much, smok-ing more or abusing drugs. Everyone reacts differently. There is no need to continue suffering. Using an innovative approach by learn-ing to manage stress and anxiety, you can feel calm, relaxed and in control when there is stress around you.

You can practice proven psychological tools and techniques to overcome anxiety and fear. Feel freer and increase your confidence; learn how to react differently and make positive changes in your life now. Increase concentration and focus, sleep better and take that important step to long-term, permanent change.

My vision was to be part of a 100 per cent Irish company owned and run as my own. With my experience and that of fellow directors, I decided to open my own company and called it Slim 4 Life.

I wanted to be personally in-volved with each member and to have the hands-on approach - and I wanted a no gimmick pro-gramme for men and women that our clients could use on a ongoing basis so I chose the Food Pyramid from the HSE.

It brings our eating habits back to healthy eating, discover-ing foods and tastes that are very

satisifying. At our clubs we weigh once a

week and measure once a month. Each member receives a copy of the new Food Pyramid with start-er pack, which is for adults and children over five-years–of-age.

We also have a 20-minute mo-tivational talk on a different topic every week. We send a motiva-tional text to our members each week and also two FREE recipes. It is only €6 per week (€6 joining fee) and no missed week fee. All are welcome and I would love to meet you.

Council plans for new Liffey cycle routeJack Gleeson

DUBLIN City Council is seeking views on plans for a new, off-road Liffey cycle route.

The proposed route would run from the Phoenix Park to the 3-Arena in the Docklands.

“The number of people cycling in Dublin has increased as better cycling facilities become availa-ble,” said Michael Phillips, Direc-tor of Traffic with the council.

“Off-road cycle routes can play an important role in encourag-ing people to take up cycling and also gives commuters more op-tions when they decide how they want to travel to work.”

Four possible options for the cycle route are being consid-ered including a two-way route along the north quays. This route would not see a reduction in the

number of traffic lanes but a new section of boardwalk would be needed between Arran and Ellis Quays.

The second proposal is for a two-way route on the north quays with buses re-routed to a new public transport corridor

on Benburb Street (between Heuston Station and Ellis Quay).

The third option is for a two-way, north quays route with buses rerouted to the north of the Croppy Acre, which would be extended down towards the Liffey.

Option four involves one-way routes on each side of the Liffey. The cycle tracks would be along-side the buildings so bus and general traffic would not be af-fected.

All four options can be viewed online at www.cycledublin.ie, at Dublin City Council’s Civic Offices on Wood Quay, or at the Central Library in the Ilac Centre.

The public and interested par-ties can state whether they sup-port the proposal or not. Dublin City Council will use the feedback to select a preferred route op-tion, which will then be subject to consultation and planning.

whiskers are your cat’s radar system

head. If she is curious or on the hunt, she’ll press them slightly forward. Cats that are nervous or upset will pin the whiskers back toward the face.

It’s important to remember that whiskers don’t need trim-ming. Like other hairs on a cat’s body, whiskers shed. That’s nor-mal. But you should never trim them.

A cat with cut whiskers will become disoriented and scared.

If you cut them, it’s like blindfold-ing someone, taking away one of their ways of identifying what’s in their environment.

Luckily for cats, even should someone be so cruel as to clip their whiskers or if their whisk-ers are otherwise damaged in a fight, as with other types of hair, whiskers will ultimately re-grow as long as the follicle itself isn’t damaged beyond the body’s abil-ity to repair.

Whiskers are GPS and radar systems for your cat. They’re actually a powerful and impor-tant part of how a cat senses the world.

Each thick whisker is filled with tiny, supersensitive nerves that help cats judge distance and space.

It’s how she figures out if a box is too small to get inside or de-cides how far she needs to jump to reach that counter.

It’s also how she detects what’s around her. In fact, cats that are blind can navigate rooms very well by just walking around and letting their whiskers get a sense of where they are.

The follicles - the sacs that hold the hairs - are deep, with lots of nerve endings that send messages to the cat’s brain.

There’s also a sensory organ at the tip of each whisker. It picks up vibrations in the environment

that help the cat sense where she is and what other creatures are around her.

Most whiskers are rooted in the thick pads on the upper lip, but smaller sets are in the eye-brow area, along the chin and even near the feet.

The ones on the sides of the nose are the same width as your cat’s body so they can help her figure out whether a space is wide enough to squeeze through.

Whiskers on the back of the legs help cats climb trees and if you watch them carefully they can even help you determine your cat’s mood.

A complex set of muscles on the face moves whiskers back and forth and the way a cat arranges them will tell another animal - or us humans - how she’s feeling.

When a cat is relaxed, her whiskers will remain still, sticking straight out from the side of her

THOSE stiff hairs on your cat’s face aren’t just for cuteness - they have real work to do.

Whiskers help cats judge distance and space.▪

A cat with cut whiskers will become disoriented and scared.

Did you know?

• There is some evidence to suggest that whiskers aid somehow in helping cats detect odours.

• Like human finger prints, every cat’s whisker pattern is unique.

• In addition to the obvious whiskers in horizontal rows on the ‘whisker pad’ of their cheeks, there are also whiskers between the corner of a cat’s mouth and the outer corner of the nose, on the chin, the eyebrows and on the back of the front legs.

• The scientific name for a cat’s whiskers is ‘vibrissae’ which hints at their sensitivity to vibrations

in air currents.• The breed of cat called the

‘Sphinx’ often has few to no whiskers.

• As you might have guessed, blind cats rely almost solely on their whiskers to navigate.

• When a cat is angry or defen-sive, the whiskers will be pulled back. When the cat is happy, cu-rious or content, the whiskers will be more relaxed and pushed forward.

• Cats don’t have a true collar bone, which allows them to twist their way through very narrow openings.

• ‘To be the cat’s whiskers’ is an idiom meaning ‘to be better than everyone else’.

Introducing your dog to your new babyIntroducing your new baby to the furry friend in your home can be very stressful. You can reduce this stress if you prepare early. This ensures you will have the best possible chance for a successful and easy transition when your baby arrives. Before your little bundle of joy arrives you should gradually reduce the amount of attention you give your dog throughout the course of the day and also make an effort to give your dog longer periods of undivided attention, such as playing games or going for a long walk. This will replace the shorter bursts of attention throughout the day. Both these steps will prepare your dog for the reduced attention that she will receive once the baby arrives.

Meeting the Baby:• For the first meeting, you should select a quiet room and sit down with the baby in your arms. It would be best if you had another person helping you. They should enter the room with your dog on a lead.• It would be better if you are relaxed and try not to be nervous or agitated as your dog will sense this behaviour. You should invite your dog to come closer in a calm, happy voice. This will reassure your pet that meeting and interacting with this new friend is a fun experience and not a stressful one.• If your dog’s body language is relaxed and friendly, such as wagging tail, sitting calmly and a curious nose, this is a sign to move forward with the meeting. Ask your friend to walk your dog toward you and the baby. The lead should be kept short but loose. If you feel your dog is ready, let her sniff the baby while you continue to speak calmly and softly to her. Remember to give her plenty of praise for this gentle investigation.• It is completely normal for new parents to feel nervous about letting your dog get close to your new baby. Even if your dog seems calm and a little curious, you don’t have to have a long interaction but it is important to stay calm and praise you dog.• Don’t just give your dog attention when the baby is asleep. Give your dog lots of love and attention when the baby is present, this will teach her that when the baby is around, she will have positive experience and get treats, petting or time playing. The most important rule to remember is to never leave any baby or young child unattended with any pet no matter how docile or friendly the pet may be.

‘Schizo-Poetry: Fragments of Mind’Authors: Susanne Wawra, Kevin Nolan

CAROL Ann Duffy, the United Kingdom Poet laureate, has written: “Poetry… is a series of intense moments - its power is not narrative. I’m not dealing with facts, I’m dealing with emotion.”

The poems in ‘Schizo-Poetry: Fragments of Mind’ are just this - poems of intense moments filled with emotion.

The authors of the poems in this debut col-lection challenge the reader by presenting their unique perspectives on colour. These are poems of contemplation and meditation; they remind us of the singular sacredness of perception.

The work flies in the face of the stereotype that people with mental health issues cannot be of value, contribute to society and create. There is a mythical belief that the mist created by mental illness forever blinds those in its midst. The reality is that all of us can at some time be affected by mental health issues and we can re-cover.

Some are gifted with poetic talent and this gift can shine through the heavy fog of illness.

The idea of two poets writing on the same sub-ject provides an unwelcome allusion to the out-dated perception of schizophrenia as a split per-sonality. It is a challenge to history and confined

thought to under-stand that schizo-phrenia is not about two minds; more it is about the confused and disorganised sin-gle mind.

In this collec-tion the writers have demon-strated their clarity of thought and emotion as they paint their landscapes of colour. So let us package away our misconcep-tions and bias-es and look at this fresh writ-ing with vigour and a sense of intrigue.

The poems scream out with vivid images such as (in ‘Flavescent 1’): ’My eyes are closed, I am floating/in the juicy yellow of my view.’

And in (‘Flavescent 2’): ‘The air is wet with Ave Marias; a solitary singer searchingly fingers her/

soul and moans low while city foxes dash by dizzy and w i l d - e y e d

with/question-ing snouts.’Then there’s

this line (‘Dark White’): ‘Sometimes your thoughts are so quick they stumble on your tongue/I bow down to retie their shoelaces.’

These are poems in praise of light that should be read and re-read for new meaning. They are hymns to the beauty of col-our and the bravery of those who have recovered and in that proc-ess have discovered something new about themselves and the world.

As the poet Fiona Sampson declares: “Poetry is often some-thing unexpected in the thera-

peutic context. It’s newer and more conspicuous than a chat with a social worker. It’s more per-manent than a conversation with another user at the drop-in. It’s more public than a diary and more attractive than a feedback form.”

Doyle’s trilogy chosen for ‘One City One Book’

New book ‘Here I Am!’ accompanies exhibitionMARCH 21 marked the launch of ‘Here I Am’, a photographic collection that celebrates the unique personalities of chil-dren with Down Syndrome in Ireland.

The launch, which coincided with World Down Syndrome Day 2015, includes a book and na-tional exhibition tour and is the brainchild of Michigan born artist and photographer Dan Murphy.

The event took place in Dub-lin Castle, with further book launches taking place across the country over the coming weeks, in addition to a national ‘Here I Am’ exhibition tour.

The book, which perfectly cap-tures each individual’s personal-ity and shows that these kids are children first and foremost, has been a labour of love for Dan Murphy over the past two years.

Speaking about the book, Dan said: “With the book and photo-graphic collection I have tried to capture the unique personality of each child and doing so was a lot of fun for everyone.

“It was a great privilege to be able to spend time with these remarkable kids and their fami-lies. In creating this book, I have experienced first hand how every child has quite simply enhanced the lives of their families, in spite of the challenges that accompany life with a child who has this con-

dition.”The idea for the book came

about after Dan, who now resides in Kerry, befriended a beautiful little girl with Down Syndrome named Peppy. Dan became close to Peppy and her family when his own family provided some res-pite care for her.

Dan recalls: “I took a few pic-tures of Peppy with her family and through Rachel Fitzgerald, Peppy’s tenacious mum, we got talking about people’s percep-tions of Down Syndrome and how my images captured Peppy’s per-sonality.

“From there, we started to

take more photos of children with Down Syndrome. The concept grew and now, two years later, we are launching ‘Here I Am’.”

Broadcaster Brendan O’Connor, who Dan credits with bringing the photographic exhibition alive through his tremendous advice and vision, added: “The photo-graphic exhibition will challenge those who usually look away or who stare.

“It will challenge those who just glance and make simple as-sumptions to look properly and see individual children in all the glorious complexity that every child contains.

“Dan wants everyone to take a second look - a real look - and not just see someone with Down Syndrome. Dan does not want to fix people with Down Syndrome - he wants to fix the rest of us.”

The images will be appearing at high profile events through-out Ireland over the coming year, organised by various Down Syn-drome Ireland branches.

The coffee table book will be available to purchase through Down Syndrome Ireland branch-es and through bookshops na-tionwide and will cost €24.99 with all proceeds going to Down Syndrome Ireland.

THE Italian tour industry is working hard this year to ac-commodate hordes of travel-lers hungry to experience their delightful cultures, so there’s lots to look forward to.

The big news in Florence is the food scene. The steel-and-glass Central Market has undergone an exciting resurgence. The top floor is now an inviting, upscale food court and several of the restaurants stay open late. On the ground floor of the market, vendors still sell meat, fish, and produce.

The open-air San Lorenzo Market, whose stalls used to sur-round the Church of San Lorenzo, still sprawls down the streets.

Florence now has an EATaly, part of a growing chain of foodie mini-malls that are popping up in big Italian cities. The slick, mod-

ern mall has a gelato counter, pastry shop, gourmet grocery store (with kitchen gadgets) and a cluster of food counters serving pastas and pizzas, main dishes, and daily specials.

On the art scene, Florence’s Duomo Museum, with works by Michelangelo and Donatello, is closed for renovation until next November.

But in Siena, the Santa Maria della Scala museum is open af-ter an extensive renovation, dis-playing some of the most ancient Byzantine reliquaries in existence - many made of gold, silver, and precious stones. And a new sec-tion covers Siena’s history.

In Padua, you can now get 40 minutes inside the Scrovegni Cha-pel to view Giotto’s marvellous frescoes (instead of the usual 20 minutes) if you pay €4 extra and visit during evening hours.

If you want to see Bolzano’s Ötzi the Iceman - the hiker found

entombed in a glacier after 5,000 years - without getting buried in lines, buy your ticket online at least one day in advance, print it, and bring it with you to the ar-chaeological museum.

If you’re Romeward-bound, book your hotel room and Vatican Museum tickets early. Pope Fran-cis is a big draw and, as anywhere, with crowds come pickpockets.

Beware of any commotion - even caused by children and pregnant women - in the Metro and anywhere crowds form- and be sure to wear a moneybelt.

In ancient Rome, the southern part of the boulevard Via dei Fori Imperiali, near the Colosseum, has reopened to traffic. For a while in 2014, the road was a pe-destrian zone on weekends and only open to buses, taxis, and bikes during weekdays.

Throughout your travels around Italy make sure you enjoy the classic, enduring sights and

Minister for Employment launches Startup GatheringMINISTER for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bru-ton, and Minister of State for Business and Employment, Ged Nash, recently launched an initiative that aims to promote the startup sector.

The Startup Gathering will be a national week of over 50 events held in five cities, including Dub-lin, promoting entrepreneurship and showcasing Ireland’s start-up sector to more than 15,000 people.

It will be led by the not-for-profit organisation Startup Ire-land, with Bank of Ireland as strategic partner. As part of the launch, Startup Ireland is issuing a call to Dublin’s startup sector for events to be included in the Startup Gathering’s week of ac-tivities.

The call can involve stakehold-ers either creating new initiatives

or moving existing events, pro-gramme launch dates, accelera-tor recruitment dates and confer-ences to the week of October 5. Anyone interested in submitting proposals can do so at www.star-tupireland.ie/startupgathering/

The Startup Gathering will kick off with the first ever national conference for Ireland’s startup sector on October 5, and will fin-ish with a State dinner on the theme: ‘Why Invest in Ireland’s Startup Sector’, hosted by Minis-

ter Bruton. Invitees will include senior

decision makers from venture funding, corporate venturing and corporate backed accelerators from around the world as well as representatives from the startup community in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch, Min-ister Bruton said: “In Ireland we have great start-ups – we just don’t have enough of them.

“Two thirds of all new jobs are created by start-ups in their first five years of existence – that is why we are taking action as part of our plan to support more busi-nesses to start-up, expand and create those jobs that we need.

“We are putting in place more mentoring and incubation facili-ties. We held Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition to encourage start-up as a career choice, and today we are launch-ing the Startup Gathering.”

Pictured at the launch of the Startup Gathering were (from lef): Liam McLoughlin, chief executive of Retail, Bank of Ireland; Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD; Eoin Costello, co-founder of Startup Ireland; and Minister of State for Business and Employment, Ged Nash. Dealing with recruiters – learnthe important Dos and Don’ts

influence that a direct applicant simply couldn’t hope to gain.

They also have access to va-cancies that you could never pos-sibly know about, because they are never advertised.

By making a good impression on your recruiter you give them confidence that you are someone they can stake their reputation on. If they have doubts, they will find it difficult to really push for you. Give your recruiter the am-munition they need to blow the client away and secure the inter-view.

Utilise your recruiter – As well as having access to clients, re-cruiters know their clients and often know the very person in-terviewing you.

Make sure you utilise that knowledge when putting together your CV and - more importantly - when going for interview.

Recruiters should have a good idea of the style of questions that will be asked and the format an interview will take. They will also have notes on what the in-terviewer likes to hear and what subjects to avoid.

The knowledge and advice of a good recruiter gives you a huge advantage over your competition in the interview process.

All recruiters are not equal! Recruiters are by no means per-

fect. Candidates complain of not getting any response to a CV or going weeks without feedback from interviews. In some cases I have heard of recruiters calling a candidate’s current employer for a reference.

A good recruiter should pre-pare you fully for the job you are applying for; keep in regular con-tact during the process; and pro-vide you with feedback as soon as

they get it. However, as I said, it is important to engage and work with your recruiter for the best results.

Recruiters work for two groups - their clients and their candi-dates - and understand that with-out one, the other doesn’t exist. They know the importance of achieving the best result for both groups.

By working constructively with

your consultant you give them the information and motivation to work harder and more effi-ciently on your behalf, ultimately resulting in a better outcome all around.

l Cormac Spencer is a Re-cruitment Consultant/ Director at Link Personnel Services. Visit www.linkpersonnel.ie or call 01-8456312.

Be honest – Make sure your re-cruiter knows what you are look-ing for in a job; what you expect to be paid for it; and what hours you are willing to work. The more detail the better as it equips a re-cruiter with the information they need to achieve the best outcome for you.

Candidates should also be honest about any problems in their work history; any conflicts with previous employers; gaps in employment; or anything else that might throw up a red flag to a potential employer.

To be forewarned is to be fore-armed and recruiters can often use their influence to assure cli-ents that this problem does not negatively impact on your value as a future employee. By being upfront, you build trust with your recruiter and allow them to dif-fuse any potential problems.

Be available – If you send an application in for a job you should make yourself available to take calls relating to the application.

If you can’t take calls dur-ing work, make sure you have a voicemail set up and that you call back within a reasonable period of time. Never picking up your phone or returning emails makes you seem unreliable or difficult to work with.

On a related note, being avail-able to interview during working hours or lunch is extremely help-ful to any recruiter. Some inter-viewers will be flexible about interviews before or after hours, but some won’t.

Remember that the reason you are applying for a new job is that you want to leave your current one. Try to be flexible so that you can arrive at that point sooner rather than later.

Work with your recruiter – Help your recruiter help you. One of the main benefits of using a recruiter is the access that they give you to their clients.

Recruiters speak with their clients every day and if they are respected and trusted have an

WHEN searching for a new job many people will seek the help of a recruiter to work on their behalf. However, from my experience in the industry I find that there is still some mystery as to how a recruiter operates and, indeed, how to work properly with them in order to achieve the best results. Below I outline some helpful tips for dealing with all recruitment consultants.

search collaborations with Brazil.“We are very proud of our grow-

ing number of alumni in Brazil and we look forward to welcoming some of them back to study with us at Masters level.”

Rónán Ó Dubhghaill, vice president for external relations, University College Cork, said the Munster college was delighted to host Ciência Sem Fronteiras stu-dents.

“They have proven themselves to be great ambassadors for their country through their social in-teraction with staff and students, through their academic achieve-ments and through the great vi-brancy they bring to campus life,” he stated. “They are a wonderful addition to UCC and the relation-ship with Brazil and with the Ciên-cia Sem Fronteiras programme is one that we are enthusiastic about strengthening and develop-ing further.”

Ciência Sem Fronteiras is a re-search programme established by the Brazilian federal government to encourage scholarships for sci-entific projects abroad.

Minister O’Sullivan announced the new scheme during her St Patrick’s Day speech in Brazil.

“The success of Ireland’s first intake of undergraduates from Brazil under the Ciência Sem Fronteiras scheme in 2013 prompted us to specifically encourage some of those students to return to Ire-land for their graduate educa-tion,” she said.

“We offer a top quality educa-tion in a cosmopolitan and warm environment that opens up excel-lent opportunities to our Brazilian students.”

The Brazil Masters Scholar-ship Programme to Ireland offers scholarships worth a minimum of €3,000 each and is open to all Ciência Sem Fronteiras students who have studied at undergradu-ate level at an Irish university and wish to return for Masters’ pro-grammes.

All students who previously studied in the Irish universities are eligible for the scholarships but minimum entrance require-ments of the individual institu-tions apply.

The Irish universities have wel-comed over 927 Brazilian students to their campuses since 2012 un-der the Ciência Sem Fronteiras scheme and a further 614 stu-dents are due to arrive in 2015.

“Brazilian students have made a valuable contribution to en-hanced learning, diversity and the overall student experience on our campuses,” said Professor Andrew Deeks, chair of the Irish Universi-ties Association and President of University College Dublin.

“Based on the positive expe-rience of Brazilian students in Ireland, universities are eager to further deepen their relationship with Brazil and see increasing numbers of our undergraduate Brazilian students return to un-dertake Masters level education in Ireland.” President of Univer-sity of Limerick, Professor Don Barry, said the development of

Cyberbullying vigilance urgedTHE ISPCC is reminding parents and young people to be vigilant to the issue of cyberbullying during the Easter school holi-days.

School breaks often mean a rise in calls to the ISPCC’s Child-line service. On average 23 chil-dren contact the service every day to talk about bullying - al-most the size of an average class-room of children.

Many of these calls relate to cyberbullying and its effects. During the month of March the ISPCC’s Shield Campaign high-lighted the issue of bullying.

In its final week, the particular focus was on cyberbullying - the use of technology to bully. The IS-PCC says cyberbullying remains a significant issue for children and parents across Ireland.

“The solution is not to remove or ban technology, rather to teach children to be safe online, and support parents to under-stand and manage risks,” said ISPCC CEO, Grainia Long.

The ISPCC has a full set of re-sources on its website at ispcc.ie/shield aimed at supporting chil-dren, young people and parents on how to cope with what is a complex and multifaceted issue.

The ISPCC has also recently published a policy paper, ‘Cyber-bullying: A New Reality in Child Safety’, which sets out recom-mendations for legislators, policy makers and practitioners in this area.

“Cyberbullying is a distinct and serious form of bullying,” contin-ued Long.

“The fact that many children have constant access to technol-ogy means that bullying online can be pervasive - entering a child’s home and often with no

‘let up’.“A single message about a

child is sometimes repeated by a network of perpetrators, often leaving children feeling deeply isolated. The ISPCC has issued a number of recommendations for legislators, policymakers and practitioners to ensure that cyberbullying is taken seriously and is recognised as a child pro-tection and welfare issue.”

She added: “Standing up to bullying is not just for schools - it’s everyone’s business.”

The use of technology to bully is a significant issue for children and parents across Ireland. PIC POSED▪the Ciência Sem Fronteiras pro-

gramme has fostered new, excit-ing institutional relationships in Brazil.

“The Brazilian students at the University of Limerick are

excellent ambassadors for their country and play a significant part in the interna-tionalisation of our campus,” he added.

“We look forward to deepening links

through the further shar-ing of knowledge and ideas.”

Commenting on the new scheme, Dr Juliette Hussey, vice president for Global Relations at Trinity College Dublin, said: “Trin-ity’s existing relationships with Brazilian institutions have been enhanced beyond all our expecta-tions by the Ciência Sem Frontei-ras programme.

“We are committed to main-taining those links into the longer term, to build on this success and develop lasting academic and re-

bergines, peppers, sweetcorn, broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, Brus-sels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, celeriac, beetroot, spring onions, courgette, cucumber, kale, pump-kin, squash, spinac and turnip.

Sowing seeds indoors for later transplanting is of course more time-consuming than sowing di-rect, so why do we bring extra work on ourselves? Put simply, it’s far more effective.

A seed sown in the soil outside has a lot to contend with in that difficult first eight weeks of its life – among other things, frost, snow, rain, wind, weeds, slugs, snails and birds.

By sowing indoors you are giv-ing the seedling a chance to get it-self established and sturdy before it has to deal with these threats. As a result, you’re more likely to convert your seed sowing into food eating, which let’s be honest, is sort of the point.

Incidentally, the word ‘indoors’ can have many different mean-ings for different people. When I started growing first, sowing indoors meant actually sowing seeds inside the house.

It was lovely to see growing ac-

tivity in the house and seedlings did well in the light and heat of the kitchen. But eventually it started to get a little bit out of control with more space in the kitchen dedicated to growing food than cooking and eating it.

So, about two years ago I got myself a greenhouse/potting shed with benches where I grow seed-lings. So, when I think of sowing ‘indoors’ I am referring to the pot-ting shed.

Many garden centres sell plas-tic grow-houses of all shapes and sizes which work as a smaller, in-expensive alternative to a green-house. So sowing ‘indoors’ basi-cally means sowing ‘under cover’

and giving the seeds protection from the elements.

Sowing indoors allows you to cheat on the growing season somewhat – by creating a warmer ambient temperature than that which exists outside, you can ex-tend the growing season at either end.

Things To do This Week – soWing poTaToes

• Always check the individual details on seed packets – more of-ten than not, the information on the back of a seed packet will tell you the vast majority of informa-tion you need to know about grow-ing that particular vegetable.

• Sow the following indoors on a sunny windowsill or heated green-house: lettuce, aubergine, pepper, chilli-pepper, cucumbers, celery, celeriac, fennel, sweet corn, basil, leeks, summer cabbage, cauli-flower, Brussels sprouts, parsley, courgette and French beans.

• Sow the following outdoors or under cover: broad beans, car-rots, onions, peas, radishes, early lettuce and asparagus.

Tip of The Week – groW red Cabbage

We’ve grown red cabbage for a few years now and it’s a very straight-forward, reliable plant to grow - pretty much untroubled by slugs and other pests once you get it started.

It is also excellent for late sum-mer coleslaws and will survive tough winters in the ground. Red cabbage is very easy and reliable to grow from seed, so there’s no real need to buy those expensive plants in modules.

Sow the seeds in a seed bed or in modules (one seed in each cell) and they will almost certainly reward you with fine plants later on.

Grow it Yourself: tips for the garden

I want to talk a little about seed sowing, which can be such a chal-lenge when you’re starting out with your GIYing, but is relatively straightforward once you get a bit of a system going.

In particular I want to talk about seed sowing ‘indoors’ – that is, those seeds that are sown in protected conditions rather than sown directly in the soil outside.

So, here’s how it breaks down.

I sow the following vegetables directly in the soil outside in the vegetable patch: potatoes, on-ions, garlic, shallots, peas, beans, parsnips and carrots.

Pretty much everything else I sow indoors first and then (usual-ly about 4-6 weeks later when the seedlings are a little bit hardy), I plant them out in the soil.

The vegetables I sow this way include: lettuce, tomatoes, au-

Easter kicks off DIY season

Sadly, many would-be DIY en-thusiasts and budding home in-terior designers are either over ambitious or ill prepared and could end up spending part of their holiday in hospital.

Every Easter Irish accident and emergency departments treat double the normal number of patients showing up as a result of DIY disasters at home.

The main reasons for DIY in-juries is that people tackle jobs that are beyond their capabilities with inadequate tools and safety gear.

According to research, women know less about DIY than men and are more at risk. But it’s the men who usually end up injured as they tend to over-estimate their abilities and under-estimate the work involved.

Problems arise because they are determined not to be beaten by a job when, in truth, they need more knowledge, the right tools and someone to help.

Other common accidents are down to children or pets

causing distractions, dodgy electrics, bogey plumbing and collapsing shelves or other struc-tures.

Employers have to ensure the safety of their staff and provide proper training and well-main-tained tools but the DIY enthusi-ast is left to protect him or herself – not good for those with inflated ideas of their abilities.

It’s important to follow some guidelines when starting a DIY project. Here’s our top tips for home safety.

l Plan the job and have all the right safety gear like goggles, masks and gloves. Use the right tools for the job and take your time;l Keep tools properly main-

tained;l If using electrical equipment

make sure you fit a RCD (Residual Current Device) first. If you ac-cidentally cut through a flex or cable, the RCD will cut off the power supply to the equipment. This reduces the risk of you being

EASTER is traditionally the start of the DIY season and homeown-ers all over Dublin will be using the upcoming long weekend to give their property a makeover.

The main reason for DIY injuries is that people tackle jobs beyond their capabilities with inadequate tools and safety gear.▪

electrocuted;l Always place electrical ca-

bles behind you while you work and don’t allow them to become kinked or frayed;l If hiring tools make sure

you are shown how they work; are provided with proper instruc-tions; and that you read them carefully before use. Make sure you have any necessary protec-tive equipment such as gloves or goggles. Look for a tag on the equipment which confirms it has been checked and serviced since it was last returned to the hire shop;l Remember the ‘one out,

four up’ rule when using a ladder. This means to match every one measure out from the wall with four measures up to get the saf-est ladder angle. Only ever place the ladder on firm ground and wear non-slip shoes. Never over-reach - take the time to move the ladder instead;l When lifting, stand close to

the object, feet spread on either side of the load, to give stability.Bend the knees and avoid stoop-ing;l Don’t be over ambitious.

Using an expert can save money

and pain in the long run;

As well as making sure of your own personal safety when starting a DIY project, it’s worth checking out your household in-surance too.

Accidental damage to some parts of your home, such as baths, sinks, ceramic hobs and fixed glass in doors, is included as standard in most buildings in-surance policies.

However, it’s worth reading the small print to ensure your policy will protect you – finan-cially at least – in the event of a DIY disaster.

Home energy grants are up to 50 per centIMPROVED efficiency grants now mean the average Irish household can cut energy bills by up to 60 per cent, according to energy supplier Energia.

The supplier recently opened

its new Energia Centre at House-2Home, Kileen Road, Dublin 10 and are encouraging all home-owners to visit and find out about cost effective ways they can im-prove the energy efficiency of their home.

The Sustainable Energy Au-thority of Ireland (SEAI) attended the centre’s launch and informed householders that the cash value of every grant available under the Government’s Better Energy Homes scheme has been in-creased by 25 per cent to 50 per cent, and bonus payments have been introduced for household-ers who carry out three or more energy efficiency upgrades.

“We always strive to help our customers save money on their electricity and gas bills,” said Cormac Mannion of Energia.

“What many people don’t real-ise is that you can substantially reduce your energy bills by in-vesting in some straightforward efficiency upgrades for your home.

“Energia customer discounts combined with SEAI grants mean the costs of these upgrades are dramatically reduced. At the En-ergia Centre at House2Home, the Energy Services Team can advise on our wide range of energy ef-ficiency measures, including insulation, boilers and heating controls, solar energy and heat pumps.”

Michael Martin, programme manager of the Better Energy Homes scheme in SEAI, added: “We’re delighted that the Bet-ter Energy Homes grants have now increased. This will encour-age even more householders to undertake efficiency improve-ments and by introducing bonus payments, we hope that previous grant recipients will carry out more energy upgrades.”

While three-quarters of Irish homes have some form of home insulation, almost two-thirds of households are unaware of how energy efficient their home is, ac-cording to a recent home energy survey carried out by Energia.

The Government’s Better Energy Homes scheme has been increased to 50 per cent.▪
