Dear Parents & Guardians, Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are very excited to begin the new year. A warm welcome to all our new families!

It has been a very busy summer! We were fortunate enough to welcome Chicago Cares and Discover Financial back to NLC on August 22nd. There were 375 volunteers from Discover Financial to assist in beautifying our building. They helped to paint every classroom, paint all the cabinets in every room, paint murals in our gym, create the sensory garden, redo our parking lot lines and assist with landscaping in the front of our building. I have attached pictures to this email. It was truly an amazing day!!

In addition, NLC welcomed Chibbernoonie Global Design. Two architects from Chibbernoonie Global Design traveled to NLC from New York to assist with various projects at NLC. They also did this work for FREE! They designed and built the structures for the sensory garden, designed and started to build our school Cafe and they designed and painted all the new signs above every doorway. It was truly amazing what they did for our school community in such a short time. They were here for two weeks and worked 16-hour days to get the projects as complete as possible. They will be back in mid-September to ensure everything is accomplished. NLC is so grateful for their time and generosity. Friends Of NLC is running a Fundraiser for both of these ongoing projects: Sensory Garden and Café. We have to put a path in the sensory garden and add materials to our café. Freshman Parents/Guardians: On September 26th from, 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM will be a Freshman Parent meeting led by NLC’s social worker, Mrs. Deering and our counselor Mrs. Alexander. Mrs. Alexander will be sending home a "Release of Information form". Each parent will need to complete their child's name and identifying information. This form is to share information between Northside Learning Center and Community Alternatives Unlimited (CAU). The parent/guardian must sign the form. The form will go home the first week of school. Please look for it in your child's red folder and return to Mrs. Alexander. All Parents/Guardians: On Friday, September 21st there will be a PAC Informational Meeting from 8:00 am – 9:00 am and then a BAC meeting from 9:00 am – 10:00 am. Please join us! SAVE THE DATE!! September- Welcome Back! We are so excited for the 2019-2020 school year in the Culinary Arts Department, McClendon's Corner Cafe is taking shape and soon our team 5 and 6 students will be selling coffee drinks, freshly prepared Granola, healthy yogurt parfaits, baked goods, soups, salads as well as hot sandwiches, all prepared by team 5 and 6 students in our Culinary Arts lab classes. Many skills will be reinforced and learned to prepare our students on this journey; kitchen food handling safety, sanitation skills, portion controlling, language arts skills needed to read a recipe and follow the sequence of steps involved in making healthy delicious foods. We will keep you posted on the progress we will be making, to talk further with me about this I will be at our School picnic on October 5th cooking hot dogs, I hope to see you there.

Septiembre- Bienvenido de nuevo! Estamos muy entusiasmados por el año escolar 2019-2020 en el Departamento de Artes Culinarias, McClendon's Corner Cafe está tomando forma y pronto nuestro equipo de 5 y 6 estudiantes venderá bebidas de café, granola recién preparada, yogures saludables, productos horneados, sopas, ensaladas y sándwiches calientes, todo preparado por estudiantes del equipo 5 y 6 en nuestras clases de laboratorio de Artes Culinarias. Se reforzarán y aprenderán muchas habilidades para preparar a nuestros estudiantes en este viaje; Se necesita seguridad en el manejo de alimentos en la cocina, habilidades de saneamiento, control de porciones, habilidades de artes del lenguaje para leer una receta y seguir la secuencia de pasos involucrados en la preparación de alimentos deliciosos y saludables. Los mantendremos informados sobre el progreso que haremos, para hablar más conmigo sobre esto. Estaré en nuestro picnic escolar el 5 de octubre cocinando perritos calientes. Espero verlos allí.
