World Languages

French 1 is working hard to learn how to conjugate regular –er verbs in the present tense. They are using these verbs in order to talk in French about activities they like to do and how often they do them. Our current unit is about pastimes and hobbies. They will also be learning about the game mancala, and musical artists, Rachid Taha and Cor-neille. In the coming weeks, students will be learn how to count to 20 and how to negate a sentence in French.

French 2H just finished learning how to compare holidays, amusement parks and television shows in their own culture to that of Francophone cultures. We are starting our unit on life in the capital, Paris. We will be discussing famous works of art, neighborhoods in Paris and modes of transportation. We will be learning about the different museums in Paris, as well as the palace at Versailles.

French 4/AP is currently reading about French history during the time of Vercingétorix and Julius Cesar. We are also reading authentic news articles, listening to newscasts and discussing current events. Each week a different student presents a Francophone song to the class and then leads a discussion on the various aspects of the song. We are broadening our understanding of various musical genres!

German AP: German AP will be completing their immigration unit with a project about German-American’s. Did you know that Milton Hershey came here from Germany? Through this project, students will explore the hardships of moving to a new country, as well as the influences that these immigrants had on our country. Then they will be moving in to our Globalization unit where they will be discussing the upcoming German elections as well as other global topics, such as the environ-ment! October is also National German-American Week and AP will have a huge part in helping us celebrate this at PNHS.

German 3 is finishing up their unit on transpor-tation and will move in to our Fairy Tale unit. Students will be reading authentic German fairy tales and then working in groups to recreate the fairy tales for the class. They will also research the history surrounding the fairy tale as well as write an essay comparing and contrasting the German version to the version they grew up with. This unit is always a favorite, as students get to explore and create all on their own.

German 1 is diving in to our “Who are you?” unit, where they will learn about professions and leisure time activities. This will conclude with a project where students create a presentation about who they are, but

attach a baby picture. The class will then walk around the room, reading each poster and try to guess who each student is, based on the baby picture and surrounding information. Stu-dents are already conducting full con-versations with their friends about

who they are and are looking forward to expanding these discussions to include the new material.

German 2 has been doing a lot of work with the past tense. Students have gotten the opportunity to talk about their summers, but during the month of October will get to write a letter to their future selves. Students will write letters about their freshman year to be opened during their senior year. My seniors always love coming in and asking for their letters at the end of their time here at North.

ENGLISH & SOCIAL STUDIES

English:

English 1 Honors: Students in English I Honors have been reviewing key literary devices and parts of speech. Here, students compete in a challenge in which they identified and provided examples of the nine parts of speech, all while racing each other, and the clock! English 2: Students are currently in the midst of reading their first novel, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Set in the Southern US in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Melissa Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. The characters in this novel are strong women that work together and discover the true meaning of life and love.

Students are also preparing for the upcoming PSAT Exam scheduled for Wednesday, October 11th. Students have been issued two guide booklets and a sample test booklet. Practice and preparation for this standardized state test is being done both in and outside of our English 2 classes.

AP Language: AP Language students have been wrestling

with Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. This is part of a larger

argument-by-analogy focus in the class. Students are

building on Frost’s Education by Poetry to tackle this text.

The discussions for this piece have challenged students to

think beyond the obvious.

Social Studies:

AP Psychology: AP Psychology students are currently

studying the biological bases of behavior. Students are

working on understanding the basic components of neural

anatomy and communication between nerve cells. To rein-

force this idea, students created neuron models out of can-

dy and learned how each individual neuron transmits infor-

mation to another.

World History: The students in Ms. Gallagher’s World

History class are learning about the Tang Dynasty of China

and their invention of porcelain. The students are making

their own version of porcelain plates.

SCIENCE AND MATH DEPARTMENT

MATH

Implementation of our new resource, Springboard, is going really well. It is exciting to see students applying math to everyday situations!

Algebra 1 is testing on unit 1, which is Patterns, Equations, Inequalities, & Absolute Values. They will be ready to jump into unit 2!

Geometry and Honors Geometry are currently working in Spring Board Unit 1, which covers concepts such as geometric figures, logical reasoning, segment and angle measurement, distance and midpoint formulas, proofs and equations of parallel and perpendicular lines.

Algebra students are currently working on unit 1, which covers equations, inequalities, and functions. Unit 1 will last approxi-mately 1.5 – 2 more weeks as we finish the last two activities (function composition and operations and inverse functions).

Calculus AB - just started learning derivatives and applying toward position vs. velocity vs. acceleration.

Calculus BC - is learning how to graph plot almost any graph without the use of a graphing calculator (graphs will have correct max/min values, correct inflection points, correct concavity, correct end behavior). They will be learning "optimization" and antiderivatives next.

Statistics/Discrete: Students are finishing measures of Central Tendency and spread and moving onto to Normal Distribution Curve.

Precalc and Honors Precalc are currently working in SpringBoard Unit 1, which covers concepts such as arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, transformation of functions, modeling with power functions, and composition with functions and inverses.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION HEALTH DRIVER EDUCATION Physical Education: Please remind students to be prepared for changing temperatures for Physi-cal Education classes that engage in outdoor activities. Also, the Adventure Challenge PE class will be heading to the woods of Waterfall Glen to ori-enteer. They will use their compass, map, and reading skills to navigate their way through the orienteering course. Hopefully students will find the controls they need to and make it out of the woods! This is a very unique situation that the Adventure Challenge students will be participating in. Many of the other physical education classes are involved in a variety of activities such as, tennis, golf, cooperative games, lacrosse, archery, and much, much more! Two days a week there is a focus on fitness in all PE classes. As PE teachers, we hope to engage the students in high intensity aerobic exercise in order for the students to have a neurological benefit from the exercise session.

HEALTH EDUCATION: Students have created and presented their body system projects to their peers. Below are pictures of the students creating their projects.

DRIVER EDUCATION : October brings a couple guest speakers into the Driver Education clas-ses. The officer that is in our building will talk to the students about prop-er procedure to follow when being pulled over in a traffic situation. Also, Metra comes in and speaks to the classes about train safety.

Friday October 27th is the last day for the Driver Education portion of the semester. This is also the day of the Driver Education final exam for the class. The Safety portion of the semester will begin Monday October 30th (class rosters and schedules will remain the same). For the Safety portion of this class, students will need to bring in $8 for covering the cost of the face mask and breathing shield use for CPR.

SCIENCE

Chemistry:

Mr. Holler did a sodium demo where sodium + water yields sodium hydroxide + hydrogen gas + lots of heat.

One of the four smoke detectors in the lab over-reacted. Thank you Plainfield Fire Fighters!

Physics: Students are currently working on an engineering-type project for our section on Kinematics.

Biology:

Classes are finishing Unit 1 with the study of macromole-cules. An investigative activity allowed students to analyze “evidence” to determine the cause of food poisoning origi-nating from a fictitious food vendor. Students applied their knowledge of Proteins, Lipids, and Carbohydrates, and indi-cators for each type of food during this investigation….it was a fun activity that students enjoyed!

Financing College Resource: www.nacacnet.org

What is the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)? What

you need to know about the 2018-2019 FAFSA

Cost of Attendance (COA) – Expected Family Contribution (EFC) = Financial Aid

The cost of attendance is the total amount it will cost the family for a student to go to college for an academic year. It takes in consideration direct costs (tuition and fees, room and board) and indirect costs (books, supplies, transportation, childcare costs, and miscellaneous expenses). The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is an amount determined by formulas established by Congress and the individual college, that indicate how much of a family’s financial resources should be available to help pay for school. October 1 is the first day that anyone expecting to apply for financial aid can access, complete, and submit the FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE. Here's what you need to know about these forms and their deadlines:

All institutions require submission of the FAFSA for financial aid consideration.

For current high school seniors expecting to attend college next year, the 2018-2019 FAFSA can be accessed and submitted at https://fafsa.ed.gov/ beginning October 1, 2017.

About 250 colleges and universities also require submission of the CSS/PROFILE. This can be accessed and submitted at https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/ beginning October 1, 2017.

The deadline to submit these forms varies college to college. It is necessary to check each college's website or financial aid office to know the final deadline for each. Missing these deadlines will seriously impact your child's eligibility for financial aid.

A growing number of colleges now have a November 1 or November 15 financial aid deadline for Early Decision and Early Action applicants.

Here's what you need to know to correctly begin the FAFSA:

The FAFSA belongs to the student, although many parents complete this form on their child's behalf. To begin the FAFSA, the student must first create their own FSA ID (Federal Student Aid identification number). This ID is like an electronic fingerprint, and each person wanting to access a student's FAFSA will need their own. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

Parents wanting to complete the FAFSA on their child's behalf will need their own FSA ID. Here's who should file the FAFSA and/or the CSS/PROFILE:

Anyone wanting to receive need-based aid who believes they might qualify

Anyone who thinks they may require financial aid at any point during their child's undergraduate career. Many colleges will not consider a financial aid application from a current student admitted as a full-pay freshman if they did not submit the FAFSA.

Anyone who expects to have two or more children in college at the same time, which significantly lowers the threshold for need-based eligibility

Anyone applying for merit aid at institutions that require either the FAFSA or PROFILE for consideration for such awards

College Information Sessions @ PNHS

Each fall, PNHS invites college, university, and military representatives to provide information sessions to prospective students. All 9th – 12th grade students are invited to sign up and attend. Students can view the full list of visits in Naviance Family Connection and are urged to pre-register in order to get a pass to be excused from class. Students should research the college ahead of time and prepare a few questions to ask during the visit. Many times the college representative that visits is the main point of contact for the admissions process.
