Fun on two legs or four, the Heels to Paws 5K Fun Run and Dog Party takes place Sunday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Stratton Village. The event ben-efits the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury.
One of the most energetic participants in this year’s race actually has three legs. Wilson, owned by Stratton Sports Center instructor Karen Knight, will go for his first run on the mountain since losing one of his front legs after a fall last year. While Knight isn’t sure if Wilson will be able to run the entire race, she said it is a great opportunity for the dog run and play with new dogs. “It’s all about bringing more joy into Wilson’s life, because he’s brought so much joy into mine,”
said Knight.The race starts at 10:30 a.m.,
with registration from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Stratton Village. Pre-registration is available on active.com. The $20 registration fee includes a t-shirt and dog bones. Participants are invited to stick around until noon for a Stupid Pet Tricks contest at the Gondola, and a Dog Party with water fun, Frisbees, tennis balls, paw paintings, and beer and barbecue for the two-legged owners.
Last year’s event raised $800 for the Second Chance Shelter and a large supply of needed pet supplies like blankets, towels, food, treats and toys. Donations of these items are also encour-aged.

Already one of the most prominent annual celebrations in Bennington, this year’s Battle Day promises to be even bigger this year as it is joined by the 123rd Annual Vermont State Firefighters Conference. The namesake state holiday, officially held on August 16, is unique to Vermont.
More than 12,000 people are expected to attend the weekend of festivities that starts on Thursday, August 16, said Parade Chairman Richard Knapp. “People look forward to it,” he said. The Town of Bennington will host four full days of events celebrating the
American victory at the Battle of Bennington during the Revolutionary War. The week-end will be capped off by the Bennington Battle Day Parade on Sunday, a two and a half hour extravaganza featuring 13 marching band units, 13 floats, and up to 50 fire departments.
Celebrations begin on Thursday with a softball game in Willow Park hosted by the Bennington Fire Department against a yet to be determined rival.
On Friday, August 17, the North Bennington Fire Department will prepare a lunch of hot sausage, burgers

Devin Ryan of Long Valley, NJ scored his sec-ond consecutive grand prix victory at the 2012 Vermont Summer Festival in East Dorset by win-ning the $30,000 Mount Equinox Grand Prix, sponsored by Hand Motors, on Saturday, July 28. The six-week Summer Festival began on July 4 and continues through August 12 at the Harold Beebe Farm.
One week earlier, Ryan won the $30,000 Otter Creek Grand Prix, presented by Equinox Resort, aboard the horse No Worries.
In other competition at the show, Venezuela’s Luis Larrazabal earned an exciting victory on August 2 in the $10,000 Vineyard Vines Welcome Stake, presented by Manchester Designer Outlets. The 19-year-old Larrazabal won aboard G&C
Flash, a 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding with international experience.
Offering more than $750,000 in prize money, the Vermont Summer Festival is the richest sporting event based on purse in the state of Vermont. The $50,000 Vermont Summer Celebration Grand Prix will be held during the sixth and final week on Saturday, August 11.
Competition begins at 8 a.m. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $7 for adults and $5 for children. All gate receipts benefit area Manchester non-profits including the Mark Skinner Library, Friends Foundation for MEMS, Community Food Cupboard, and Second Chance Animal Shelter.

The Manchester Music Festival’s final concert of the summer series, “Opera’s Luminous Stars,” will feature operatic favorites sung by four rising young stars of the Metropolitan Opera at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 16. The concert will take place in the Arkell Pavilion of the Southern Vermont Arts Center.
“They will perform a virtual ‘greatest hits’ parade of opera solo arias, duets, trios and quar-tets,” said Ariel Rudiakov, artistic director of the Manchester Music Festival. “These are young people who auditioned for and won national and regional council auditions for the Metropolitans Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.”
This year’s featured artists are Amanda Pabyan, soprano; Renee Tatum, mezzo soprano; Kevin Burdette, bass; and tenor Alexander Lewis, a participant of the Lindemann program.
The artists will be accompanied by pianist and composer Caren Levine, who was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as a “petite power-house.” She will perform a solo jazz selection of her own arrangements.
Also on the program is an appearance by the Manchester Area Chorus, whose impromptu per-formance last year drew the audience to its feet.
Rudiakov noted that the concert is an excellent opportunity to see future opera stars. Some of the famous singers who have appeared in Manchester in the past include Morris Robinson, bass; Stephanie Blythe, soprano; and Garrett Sorensen, tenor, among many others.
Tickets for the performance are $45 for adults, and $10 for students with IDs. Lawn seating will be available for $15, weather permitting. To pur-chase tickets, call the box office at 362-1956 or go to www.mmfvt.org.

and hot dogs at the Bennington Firehouse at 160 River Street from 11 a.m. to 2 pm.
At 4 p.m., the firehouse hosts its annual Chicken Barbecue Dinner. Although 500 dinners are prepared at a cost of $10 per dinner, the din-ner sells out every year, so it is recommended that people get there early. In conjunction with the dinner, the fire department will also host a Chinese auction in the truck bay, where attendees can bid on gift certificates from local businesses that range from jewelry stores to kids’ toys.
A classic car cruise-in will take place at the fire house from 6 to 8 p.m., and at 8:15 p.m., the cars will parade down Main Street.
The Bennington Fire House will be the host of a Las Vegas Night from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, with music by DJ Ben Patten and games of chance such as Texas Hold ‘em and Blackjack open to the public.
Saturday’s events open at 7:30 a.m. with regis-tration for the Vermont State Firefighters Conference, and starting at 8 a.m., there will be a vendor display of new fire apparatus at the fire house. At 8:30 a.m., there will be a memorial ser-vice honoring fallen firefighters at the station.
Meanwhile, at the Bennington Monument, reg-istration starts at 8 a.m. for the Battle Day 5K Road Race, which starts at 9:30 a.m. with the sound of cannon fire. A half mile kids “Fun Race” will follow the 5K, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Monument.
From 10 a.m. to noon, the Bennington Fire Department hosts “Kids’ Day” at the Recreation Center on Gage Street. It’s an assortment of
active games such as climbing a greased pole and a huge slip ‘n slide for the younger set. Prizes will be awarded to the winners, and there will be some new games, this year, said Knapp..
At noon, area fire departments will compete in a series of Firematic Games at the firehouse. Traditional timed “muster” games such as “Midnight Alarm” and “Bucket Brigade” will challenge the teams.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday, August 19 with the Bennington Battle Day Parade at 12:30 p.m. This is the 48th year that the Bennington Fire Department is presenting the parade, which steps off on Main Street in front of the old middle school. The parade route continues down Main to Depot Street, then over to the intersection of Depot and River Streets, where it takes a left turn and ends at the firehouse.
In addition to the 13 marching bands, there will also be local rock bands on floats, Boy Scouts, baton twirlers, country cloggers, clowns, and more. Parade trophies will be presented at 4 p.m. Also at 4 p.m., the winner of the $5,000 cash prize raffle will be announced. Tickets can be pur-chased at the firehouse.
The Battle of Bennington took place along the Walloomsac River on August 16, 1777, when Colonel Seth Warner and 350 Green Mountain Boys helped defeat the British forces that came to Bennington to capture an American supply depot. With the British unable to get their needed sup-plies, their forces were weakened.
This battle is credited by many historians as the first victory for the United States in the Revolutionary War, and it set the stage for the Americans’ victory at Saratoga. The Bennington Monument now stands on the site of the supply depot.

The magnificent sounds of opera will fill the air at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living at 2 p.m. on August 14, when Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre performs selections from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” and key scenes from Sullivan’s “Cox and Box”.
The graduate and under-graduate level students are studying with the Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre in Cambridge, NY, as part of a summer fellow-ship program. This event is free and open to the public.
“We know this talented group of students will provide delightful sounds and a memo-rable performance for our resi-dents, their families, and the community,” said Ann Bouza, executive director at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living. “Many of our residents cannot go to the opera, so we are bringing it to them. We are thrilled to enhance the lives of our resi-dents by making this event pos-sible.”
The Hubbard Hall Conservatory fellowship pro-gram is highly competitive, as the students audition to take part in the program. They take classes, workshops, sing sup-porting roles in the mainstage orchestra production, and act
as understudies for leading roles.
“The students are looking forward to the performance at Equinox Terrace Assisted Living,” said Alix Jones, artis-tic director for the Hubbard
Hall Opera Theater. “It is a truly inviting environment and the community always makes us feel welcome. The last time we performed there, the resi-dents and the public had knowl-edge of classical music, and they were very supportive.”

While final figures are still being tallied, to date, the 2012 Komen Vermont Race for the Cure on July 28 drew 1,587 par-ticipants and brought in $185,046, organizers reported.
“It was a very good day, all things considered,” said Debbie Peretz, Ver mont-New Hampshire Affiliate president. “Our numbers were down but the energy level was up, and the folks on the field – participants,
volunteers, survivors, every-body – really put their heart and souls into the race. Good things will come from this, and hopefully, we’ll see our num-bers start to turn around next year.”
Peretz noted that since pledg-es are being accepted through September 1, the dollar amount raised so far is expected to rise.

Paul Monod is Barton Hepburn Professor of History at Middlebury College, where he has taught since 1984. A spe-
cialist in British and European history, he earned his doctorate from Yale and has published four books. His new book, “King Solomon’s Arts: The Occult in the British Enlightenment, 1660-1800,” will appear next year. Monod is also past presi-dent of the New England Historical Association.

How to start the conversa-tion with a loved one regard-ing end-of-life options will be discussed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 23 as RAVNAH pres-ents a program on this issue and the components of a care plan. The program will take place at Israel Congregation of Manchester.
“We prepare for everything in life – from birth, children and marriage to education, careers and retirement – but we seldom talk about prepar-ing for the end,” said program
organizer Doris Bass. RAVNAH believes that talking is the most important thing we can do to prepare for the death of a loved one. While difficult, talk-ing makes it more likely to have a rich ending.
Anyone dealing with end-of-life issues is encouraged to attend. Israel Congregation is located at 6025 Main Street (Route 7A) in Manchester. The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call Doris at 802-297-0167.
