Pastor Karen’s UpdateWelcome back! As kids get back to school and families begin their Fall schedules we welcome you back to church and Sunday School!

On Sunday September 6, 2015 kids at NUMC will begin diving deep into God’s Word with “DEEP BLUE”, our new Sunday School Curriculum. (Don’t forget-come straight to the Fireside Room!)

“DEEP BLUE: A Weekly Adventure through the Bible” will introduce today’s media-savvy kids to engaging animated videos featuring Asia, Edgar, and Kat. Each video segment tells a story through the kids’ point of view. There are also music videos, games, crafts, activities and more!

Does your child like video games? Avatars? Quests? Imagine if your child could hear a Bible lesson Sunday morning and, later that week, could log onto a digital virtual world where the Bible

story was reinforced and brought to life in 3D! Well, with the Deep

Blue Adventure App (available for free from your app store), they can!

Download the free app and check

out the Parent Dashboard (where you can learn what your child is

Youth News

To wrap up the summer, the youth enjoyed an end-of-summer BBQ and pool party! Our youth are looking forward to planning more mission outings and activities.

The youth group meets at 11 am in the YAC during second service every Sunday. All youth of middle school and high school ages are welcome to participate in any and all of our activities!

Here’s a question I’m sure you haven’t been asked too often: Have

you ever wanted to own a cow?

No? Well, there are some people in this world who really need to own

a cow, but are too poor to buy one. The children of NUMC have been

collecting money to make this dream come true for some needy family.

Can we as adults of NUMC be less generous than our children?

Wouldn’t it be nice if for every

dollar the children raised we adults

matched it? Then two needy families would have their dreams come true. So far $240.00 has been collected

toward the goal of $500.00.

And in the future whenever we saw a

cow it would put us in a good

Mission Spotlight

Our Mission Abroad - SHARE Scholars

For over 5 years now, our church has

supported two hearing and speech-impaired students with scholarships at Wesleyan

University – Philippines under a special program called SHARE (Support for the Handicapped and their Rehabilitation through

Education). This year, one of our scholars Valerie Anne Santiago graduated from sixth grade with fi rst honors. Our other scholar Xyran Castillo fi nished fi fth grade. The two of them are just two of the students at SHARE who are attending

classes in various grades from Kindergarten to High School. To follow their progress as well as those of the other 20 SHARE

group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/566553560064294/ The scholarship money we have been sending for Valerie and Xyran not only

help their families, but the whole program at Wesleyan, a Methodist University who started this special education project less than 30 years ago. Since its inception, the university has been operating it at a loss

like a community outreach. The program needs highly qualifi ed teachers skilled at sign language. A few years ago, a foundation was established to help fund the operations

of the program from outside contributions. Our scholarship money go through this foundation. For the current school year 2015-

2016, Valerie and Xyran need about $1000

for their scholarships. To date, our church has only raised $220 from last year’s Gift To The World. If you care deeply about helping the cause of the handicapped, this is a good

opportunity. Designate your giving to Gift To The World – SHARE.

Imagine the Change

Your change an change the world and save lives in the process. It works the other way around too. Your change can save lives and change the world in the process. Here’s the deal. There are red boxes in the narthex. Put that change that presently resides in purses

and pockets, plus any other that is laying

around, into the

red boxes (or anything else

for that matter) and bring it to

the church. It buys mosquito netting via

IMAGINE NO MALARIA. Mosquito nets save lives. Pretty simple huh? So bring in that change and put it to very

good purpose!

It is overwhelming to consider the needs of the billions of people in our world. Problems exist in global proportions. Our hearts can be easily broken when we consider the pain and suffering that exist.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t begin to take positive action right where we are. History has shown that one person with a clear intention and a bit of

determination can indeed change the world. Gandhi is a good example. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Mother Teresa are others.

Take what you’ve got and give it to someone who needs it. Giving doesn’t always have to be monetary. You have love to give. You have encouragement and wisdom to give. You have kindness and compassion. You can give a listening ear, or an open heart. You can give forgiveness and acceptance. If everyone would give something good each day, we could transform the world.

Save the Date: CROP Walk

On Sunday, November 1st, NUMC will host the San Fernando Valley CROP Walk for the 3rd year in a row. This year will also be the 40th anniversary of the event. 25% of the money raised benefi ts the Valley Interfaith Council (VIC) (which is distributed to local food pantries and other hunger alleviating agencies in

the San Fernando Valley; 75% goes to Church World Service and is distributed worldwide to help provide

access safe drinking water.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to see

the plans yet, here’s a small sample.

Turf Removal Update from the Board of Trustees

Last month it was our pleasure to announce that our Turf Removal Proposal had been approved by the So Cal Water Smart Program. Recently we announced that our request for a grant for the North District had

also been approved! We began the process

of turf removal a few weeks ago and are now working to remove the brown grass, prepare the soil, install the new irrigation and plant!

The project must be completed by mid-November so we are steadily working to meet the deadline. In addition, we will be working to complete some upgrades to the Pine Grove that will help with the Preschool entry and mitigate some flooding issues that we have had for the past couple of years. We are also hoping to complete the dry creek beds along the Reseda and Superior sides of

the campus before the end of the year.

We have been working on

funding the Pine Grove upgrades and are very close

to meeting that funding. We are still working to fund the

dry creek beds. Part of that will come from a Memorial Fund set up for Jim Sanchez, one of this project’s team members that passed away suddenly just a few days after the project was approved. Jim was instrumental in getting our rebate for the project and we are grateful to the Sanchez family. If you would like to give to Jim’s Memorial or to the project in general, please turn your donations into the office and note what it is for in the memo line.

The Trustees are excited about this

beautification project. I want to clarify that the project only affects the turf (grass) areas of the campus. We are not taking out other plant areas. We will be working on the irrigation system in general in hopes of further reducing our water usage, but we will

not be reducing water to areas that need it,

such as the rose garden. We need to use our water resources on the roses and plants

instead of on the sidewalks!

We are grateful to so many of you who have offered your assistance with helping

to plant etc. We will be announcing work days through the NUMC email blasts and Facebook page. So stay tuned!

Join us for Guys and Dolls!

Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and books by Jo

Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on two short stories by Damon Runyon and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories. The premier on Broadway was in 1950. It ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway and London revivals as well as a 1955 film adaption starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

We again want to honor our nonagenarians. Have you passed this milestone or know someone who has reached it? Please let us know the name and birthday and year of birth so we can recognize these special seniors. Share the information with Char Anderson, Jenifer Hemstead, or Dorine Collins.

Good to Know

Computer questions. Do you have a question about your PC or smart phone? We have a volunteer who will help you with that. Call Char Anderson and she will refer you to the person who will try to help you.

Handyman. If you are looking for a handyman a number of our seniors have had good luck with Richard Prince - 818 667 5997.

Long-term Care Insurance. I have a long-term care policy so I’m protected, right? We have had several instances among our seniors where this has not always been the case. How much does your policy pay for in-home care? Does the policy pay the caregiver directly or pay the funds to the policy holder? In that case how are the required taxes paid? How much does it pay for care in a convalescent facility? Do you have to continue to make premium payments after you are collecting benefits?

It’s a good idea to review and understand your policy and its benefits. Most insurance policies are difficult to understand, so it might be a good idea to review your policy and/or have an insurance agent you trust take a look at it for you. The last thing you want is a surprise when the time comes that you need to use the benefits of the policy. We have

someone to call if you have questions. Call Char Anderson and she will refer you to them.

Senior MinistriesAll-Church Hike - Trippet Ranch, Topanga State Park Headquarters

Our first hike of the season is Saturday, Sept. 5 at Topanga State Park Headquarters, Trippet Ranch, Entrada Rd. We will enjoy a 3-mile walk along the Musch Camp, Eagle Springs, and Nature Walk trails through

chaparral and oak groves. The adventurous can explore a longer hike to Eagle Rock. Water, hat, and sunscreen recommended. Bring lunch and we can picnic in the park

afterwards. Meet in the church parking lot at 8:30 a.m. to carpool.

Eat Out Monday at Chili’s

Join us on Monday, September 14th, 2015 for a delicious meal that nourishes your body and missional mind. Eat Out Monday occurs every second Monday of the month at a select restaurant in our community. When you bring the month’s flyer (find it at www.northridgeumc.org/fellowship/eatout.html or in the church office) with you to your meal, the restaurant will donate a portion of the

proceeds of your purchase to NUMC’s family ministries program! This month, join us at Chili’s in Northridge at 9200 Reseda Blvd. from 11am to 10 pm! Enjoy delicious food for a great cause! Flyers are always available in the narthex and the

office as well as online.

What Just Happened!

In August, a team of NUMC volunteers helped to “Heal the Bay” in Venice at the Heal the Bay Beach Cleanup and we started work on the Turf Replacement Project! This project will be ongoing, so contact the office if you’d like to help out!

programs for church Youth, including weekly youth Sunday School, Summer ministries (Vacation Bible School), Weekly MYF and special events with Youth.
